There are 10&100 k presence pots for channels 3&4 in Roadster while 25&250k in Recto`s ch 2&3. This is the reason of such difference in same pots positions. But it is possible to set roadster sounding brighter, just by turning presence higher.
Damn these 2011 UA-cam videos are much better than the modern ones. This isn't edited like someone's ADHD is acting up again and is actually informative.
best comparison videos. this sounds like the amps to me like they really do miced pre production. No super great metal licks or production that make amps sound good, but everything shown, palm mutes open chords chugs ect. very good representation of what to expect. Some demos lead ppl to be frustrated when they get their amp so really glad to see such helpful videos.
Thx for your quick reply! Helped me alot with my decision! I also mailed Mesa if there will be a mark 2 of the Roadster (a "reborn" version if you like so) as well. I´m excited what will come. Greetingz Jack
This comparision is really unfair, the preamp section of the highest gain channels is 99% the same on both, the only difference between the amps is the presence circuit. Presence circuit on Roadster CH3 is optimized for vintage mode, the same for modern mode on CH4. Multiwatt Dual Rec has a relay which select the "ideal" presence circuit according to the mode/channel selected. Long story short, if you increase the presence on the Roadster you will be able to get pretty much the same sounds on both.
... that's what I think too ... how about poweramp in Roadster, considering three completely different preamps, especially in second 'Stiletto channel' which requires it's own power section in order to get that typical brit tone ...
wow, Roadster for the win. the regular dual sounds too bright and fizzy. while in this video the dual sounds more open and less confined but it just sounds like the Roadster volume is lower. liking the warmth and the cleaner sound of the Roadster!
I was shocked at how the roadster sounded, so much more bass, thank u very much for the demo guys, could you please now do an in-depth review of one of these or the road king just like you did for the mark v...Thanks Yash
@Derrick7777777 I'd say so. Keep in mind we had the EQ's relatively flat. You can always dial in more or less bottom depending on your guitar and style.
Hey Don, great reviews on mesa stuff, it's been spiking my interest latley. Quick question, how different are the mesa roadster and roadking? is one brighter then the other? i understand that mixing the tubes has an effect on tone. thanks for the reviews and help!!!
@47Wolfgang Rob, your guitar is turning out awesome! I have the frets pulled and the neck leveled, sanded and re-oiled. It looks great! Your stainless steel frets should be here any day! :-)
Hey Don thx for your great reviews! I have a little question... Are the distorted sounds from the old rectifier the same as the roadsters? And is the clean sound section from the roadster the same as the new dual rectifier? Because i dig the sound of the new dual rectifier more... thanks in before
Good question. The roadster did not receive a revision in 2010 along with the dual and triples. Channels 3 and 4 of the roadster are pretty much the same as the older 3 channel dual and triples. The cleans have always been a bit different in the roadster. It has some extra modes like fat and tweed, plus the reverb.
Hi Don, fantastic playing BTW. Are the EL-34 Mesa Tubes the best you can replace the 6L6 tubes that come stock in the Roadster? I realize the only TRUE way to get the Marshall "Roar" or sound is to just go out & get a Marshall but on Channel Two and some say Ch.3 what settings would you start with to get as close to The Marshall Tone as you can?
I think the way that the presence stage is designed on the roadster is different than on a standard DR. I think if you increased the presence on the roadster, they'd sound virtually identical.
+vash1053 it frustrates me that no one does that when comparing. It think that it may turn people off from the roadster. I think a simple adjustment of the presence, mids, and treble would make them identical. With the Roadster having more options.
I have had a road king II and a multiwatt rectifier and it isn't the presence knob. I could make them sound much closer by putting a boss ge7 graphic eq in the fx loop and either jacking up the 6k slider on the RK or pulling it way, way down on the multi watt. The roadking and roadster are just darker. That's not a bad thing at all. I sold mine awhile ago and just bought another ge7 to use with my multiwatt so I could darken it up again when I feel like it.
I second what Daniel Pasco said, I have a Roadster head and it's not the presence knob. And sadstatue25, it frustrates me that people talk about stuff they know nothing about. The roadster sounds like absolute crap because they changed the frequencies on which the EQ selves act on. The only time it doesn't sound as bad is when you're not playing Metal, which is what I play 99% of the time (the video is very accurate when it comes to which playing style the roadster can get away with). I tried every possible combination known to man, including those suggested in the manual (the manual itself is a joke too. Several important things that apply to all Rectifiers - if not all Mesa amps - were omitted from it and I had to search for them in the manual of the Dual/Triple Rectifier Solo to find them. Dabbling in the effects section of the Two notes wall of sound made the sound much better, since it gave back some of those omitted frequencies that the moron at Mesa who made this monstrocity thought would be fun to shit on, and then make inaccessible. Buying it was the worst decision I made in my entire life. PS: I always play it through a Mesa 4x12 Traditional cab. I also own a Mark V, so I know what a good Mesa amp sounds like.
Helpful video, thanks. What's up with the 4th channel on the Roadster? I mean, what's the point of a 4th channel if it sounds like it has a blanket covering it?
@luiza177music No pedals were used. The dual and triple were revoiced in 2010, so if your amp was made before that it could be a factor. Also tubes can cause issues with tightness. When was the last time you re-tubed?
Just saw this vid. The roadster is a tiny bit darker. But I’d say that they are very close. The roadster I’ve heard is like having more options but it’s apples to apples really they have that same voice. Great Job. How does channel 3 of the solo compair to the mark4 and mark5 amps. Is the mark 4and 5 just a totally different tone??? Could you one day do a vid bc you know how to setup comparisons!!
Nice comparison. The roadster has less of that recto sizzle on the top end and the notes have a different quality when palm muting. More "sticky" ;). The darker top end on the Roadster can be desirable but sometimes you need that extra clarity of the Dual. The major advantage of the Roadster is the series fx loop. IMO that's more important than the tonal differences between the two amps.
Hey Don, good talking to you this Sat. besides the Mesa what other 4x12 Cabs put out good lows? I was listening to the new Laney IronHeart that Ola aka Feardse came out with today and it sounds good but it's hard to tell how much of it was post production. The new Laney Tony Iommi I know will knock you down or Tony wouldn't use it. Problem is the Cab isn'r in stock in the US as of yet, just the Iommi head. Have a great week, Lou
You gotta do a Roadster vs Mark V, I took back an entire Roadster rig because I was unsure about it because I didn't get to try a Mark V. I'd love to here them in this setting. But dude, crank them up. \m/
Which amp would you recommend for lead work (ala vai, satch, petrucci)? From this video it seems the Dual Rectifier has more top end than the Roadster. I also want something that takes effect pedals really well too.
@ElectricTurkey1 I obviously have to disagree, because I heard the amp in the room and the recording is very accurate. It was mic'ed with a Royer R-121... so it doesn't get much more transparent than that. If your roadster sounds considerably different, please keep in mind the guitar your using, the amp settings, speaker cabinet etc... not to mention the speakers you are listening to youtube on, which may color the sound in undesirable ways.
hey don sorry i know it's been a year but which amp would you say is more versatile (in today's market) i know it's a pretty long time but i'm assuming they're almost the same. any input would be nice. thanks man
I play rythm and solos in a hard rock band, I think the roadster would best suit my needs, I could for instance use channel 1 for clean (of course), channel 2 for a little overdriven sound, channel 3 for my hard rock sound and channel for my solo with a delay in the loop. Can you get good sustain, pinch harmonics and feedback from channel 3? would you need to use a overdrive pedal to cramp up gain and sustain (I use one with my single rectifier)?
For Channel 3 Dual-Rec versus Channel 4 Roadster in Vintage mode...... it sounds like there is a 4 foot piece of styrofoam between the cab and mic when using the Roaster. Outside of that I prefer the sound of the Roadster. The other guitar player in my band has a watts switching Dual Rec....... very nice amp. Compliments my Orange very well....... but I'm leaning towards grabbing a Roadster.
Man I’ve owned 3 rectos now and keep selling them. This video reminds me why I sold them. Congested high end, very little mids and flubby low end. These $2500 amps need a $100 pedal to sound good in my opinion. Wanna like them but I’ll stick with my Friedman BE, Bogner XTC and Uberschall.
Hey, I kinda Have the opposite problem as the other dude. My roadster in channel 2 '' brit '' and channel 3-4 sounds are really trebly, middy ...fizzy... Would it also be because of a tube problem ? ( I used different pickups, it's worst with actives but still present with a p90 and passive humbuckers ) ...
Derrey! They wrote back very fast (one day). I´ll post what they wrote back before telling nonsense ;) Michael Taylor: "Hello there, Thanks for your email. It sounds to me like the recto has a little more messiness in the higher registers, and that the roadster just needs the lows dialed back a bit (and maybe the volume up a little to match the "loudness" of the recto?).
The Roadster seemed to have a blanket over it -- I'd love a shootout with a Road King & a Roadster -- Next time just use an A/B box and run everything into the same cab so there's no volume and mic issues like this video.
@rattlehead001 for lead work Mark V. I bought the Mark V first and the switch it for a roadster. The Mark V is a tight head with lots of settings. I just think the roadster is more aggressive. But if you're a lead guitarist Mark V is the way to go !
Yeah, well, I just picked up the Multi-Watt Dual Rec. I had my choice between that and the Roadster. No need for the 4th channel or extra modes. Why did I wait this long to pick up a Dual Rec?!

+mainlymusicman Its right, owning the new REVOICED multiwatts and having played many roadsters, the roadsters are much darker than the new multiwatts. The multiwatts are much brighter and open unlike its ancestors. This is what gives the roadster the illusion of sounding "muffled" as you have pointed out. Its just darker, which yes, is like a blanket over the cab. I am well experienced with both models and can safely say this vid is extremely accurate. It makes it seem like the multiwatt is better tracked, but in the mix with drums etc or even live, neither is really better. Some like the darkness of the roadster some like the brightness of the multiwatts.
the Both cut through fine. While the roadster is darker it cuts through JUST as well. Actually live, the mids seemed more prominent in the Roadster which is probably what helped it cut through. My best live tone live so far has been with the roadster I feel, between what I think and the compliments i have gotten. However the multiwatt is a new beast and dialing it in is much different than on a roadster it is also much lighter than the one ton roadster. I have heard ppl say the roadster doesn't cut as well, but believe me anyone who has said such a thing has a bad ear for sure. Roadster sounds fuller on channel 4 modern setting, and has a slightly better clean channel. The multiwatt wins on every other mode and channel though. It's channel 2 and 3 vintage and raw are much better then the roadsters 3 and 4 in my opinion.
The Roadster sounds like it just has less fizz than the Rectifier, but also less presence. At least on those settings. I'd say the Roadster is probably a better studio amp and the Rectifier is a better stage amp
this is a great comparison! good job!
Wow!!!! Cheers Mr. Ola!!! If Ola say so, is true 🤘

Yeah, bad demo
Intelligent Evolution How? He’s not intentionally voicing them to sound the same... It’s so people can hear the differences.

🔥
Dude, I LOVE your comparisons.
Sounds like the Dual Rec sounds more alive and the Roadster more boxed in.
yup
agree
Agreed!
Ya thats called a little louder and a touch of presence.
wow thank you so much for the demo.
i have been waiting for so long for this demo.
Rob, your sense of time is amazing to me!

shout out to my man Don, always bringing the useful demos that actually TEACH you something
What a great comparison.
I have watched this vid over a doezn times, and it shows how importand the Mids are.
I love every video from all haggertys which I have watched !!! Really great demos, best of all which you can find at youtube!! :-) ten thumbs up!!!
As always, a fantastic review!
Roadster sounds a bit cleaner and less fizzy, but the dual rec sounded tighter and a little more punchy. Anyone else notice?
Thx for your quick reply! Helped me alot with my decision! I also mailed Mesa if there will be a mark 2 of the Roadster (a "reborn" version if you like so) as well. I´m excited what will come.

Hi maestro, I think you deliver the best amp demos on the net !
You rock !!!
Thanx and how about some Krank amps ???
@Derrick7777777 I'd say so. Keep in mind we had the EQ's relatively flat. You can always dial in more or less bottom depending on your guitar and style.

Nice video Don! You should do one with my Mark III ! The strat sounds great!!

Roadster. More meaty distortion, lesser fizz. It just sound "polished" which is great for live n recordings.
The Attitude Song & the Beckster...You go Son!
The rectifier rules. Love mine. It is certified organic tone and will completely spoil you on the vast array of drive tones you can coax out of it.
hey don sorry i know it's been a year but which amp would you say is more versatile (in today's market) i know it's a pretty long time but i'm assuming they're almost the same. any input would be nice. thanks man
Dual Rectifier Multi Watt is what I own...like it more than the Roadster...always great playing
I gotta say. You have an awesome job, hahahah! Demoing Mesa amps with Suhrs and PRSs!
@haggertysmusic Don do you have a Roadster Only demo?.
just asking :) a Roadster or a Standar Dual Rectifier?
Are you using a booster with the amps? The Recto sounds way tighter than mine...
... @2:40 'Led Boots' 👍 Haven't heard that one for a while :) ...
can we get a Road King vs Dual Recto comparison as well?! that would be awesome!!

To my ears, I like the multi-watt better, but like others have said, I am sure you can tweak the Roadster to sound like the multi-watt. Great vid! \m/
The multi watt rectos are supremely versatile
@@justinTime077 Agreed. I own a few 2ch recto's (rev f and g's) and the new multi's and love them all equally \m/
@haggertysmusic Yeah, I got my amp in 2009. I last re-tubed it a few months ago...
It sounds to me like the recto has a little more messiness in the higher registers, and that the roadster just needs the lows dialed back a bit (and maybe the volume up a little to match the "loudness" of the recto?).

Can you do a comparison with Mark V against a Road king or Roadster

The Roadster seemed to have a blanket over it -- I'd love a shootout with a Road King & a Roadster -- Next time just use an A/B box and run everything into the same cab so there's no volume and mic issues like this video.

@johnnychingas1000 Suhr Pro Series S3. Thanks for watching.
@snapascrew Yes it is.
Yeah, well, I just picked up the Multi-Watt Dual Rec. I had my choice between that and the Roadster. No need for the 4th channel or extra modes. Why did I wait this long to pick up a Dual Rec?!
so this is a 2010 dual rec (the new voiced) ?
And what did MEsa said about the new roadster version?
Sorry forgot to poste the date of the mail... (if anyone is interested)
That was 30.05.2012 i wrote them one day before so yeah pretty damn quick for my experiences ;)
Hope the infos help :)
i mean both are awesome, just tiny differences.
+wheresallthezombies ch 4 was really muddy compared to the ch 3 recto
yeah, but it could just be the way he has it set up.
No surprise that these Dual Rectumfinders come out of San Francisco.
what about channel 1-2?
roadster through a marshal cab? how do you think that would sound? lead A cab is what i have. think it'd do the trick?
I could really use a roadking 2 review in this quality
now I have the roadster with PRS 513 going through it and seriously has alot more balls than what you displayed, I think you fudged up the settings, but my roadster is before 2010 so that might and you are playing the newer rectifier, but I don't know why my sound differs alot from what you were getting on this video?
The Dual Rec sounds much more nasally in this video, which I know I've experienced with them before. The Roadster is much more open and has a nicer cut-through tone.
something off here. no way the roadster sounds so much more muffled compared to the dual recto. sounds like theres a blanket over the roadster.

Is the same guy that does the Best Guitar Solo Ever video on UA-cam?
WHAT BRAND OF GUITAR IS THAT?
Don do a Road King II review pls :-)
Is this the Re-Born Recto?
Dual rec sounds grinder and all around better IMO.
+Metalgears1968 Dude i agree, so damn hard... The Dual rec crushed the roadster.
I like the Roadster more! Dual sounds more fizzy while Roadster a bit darker..
Now that's a guy you can trust.
👍🏽
why does the roadster sound muffled?
@themodernguitarist same here
cant go wrong with either one.
@domct203 they did one
The Roadster sounds like it just has less fizz than the Rectifier, but also less presence. At least on those settings. I'd say the Roadster is probably a better studio amp and the Rectifier is a better stage amp
