    This song is probably the first conscious hip hop song, meaning one of the first rap songs to include a meaningful "message" or social commentary.

    • @jork8206

      For sure. Before this song, because rap came out of the disco scene in large, rap was mostly party/ feel-good music.

      The first though is 'We Almost Lost Detroit'. It's not rap but it was a cornerstone of the beginning of rap

    Do Children's Story by Slick Rick! Best storytelling song off all time

    • @Israel-nb7ip
      @Israel-nb7ip 6 років тому +4

      538ser no way. I love Slick Rick but Children's Story is definitely not the best storytelling song of all time. It might be the first elaborate story told on a rap song but Nas' Rewind and Biggie's I Got A Story To Tell are definitely better. Much more complex and creative. Slick Rick is still a legend and the first to perfect the storytelling aspect of rap but let's also stay in reality.

    • @Israel-nb7ip
      @Israel-nb7ip 6 років тому +1

      ColumbianNeckTie BlackGambino I would definitely put Niggas Bleed up there with the others I mentioned. Gotta go back and re-listen to that Pun track. Other storytelling songs to consider on this level too:
      Nas - Blaze a 50
      Eminem - Stan
      Nas - Last Real Nigga Alive
      Mos Def - Ms Fat Booty
      B.I.G. - Gimme the Loot
      Wu Tang (Rae & Ghost) - Live at the MGM
      KRS-1 - Love's Gonna Getcha
      I can probably come up with others too that deserve high consideration but these immediately come to mind as superior to Children's Story. But again I got nothing but love for Slick Rick and he's in my top 20 all time MCs and definitely one of the originators of high end storytelling in Hip Hop, with consideration to Whodini (One Love) and maybe Ice T (6 in da Morning) among others.

    Have you guys ever heard of Sister Rosetta Tharpe she was was an African American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and recording artist.popular in the 1930s and 1940s with her gospel recordings that was a precursor of rock and roll. She is known as "the original soul sister" and "the Godmother of rock and roll." She influenced early rock-and-roll musicians, including Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. She was a pioneer in her guitar technique; she was among the first popular recording artists to use heavy distortion on her electric guitar. On December 13, 2017, she was chosen for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an Early Influence. Not to many people know about her contribution to the evolution of Rock and Roll.

    Hey, RDO and Grimby! Love these videos, always mark them to watch later the second I see them on my notifications, if I can't watch them immediately. I had one suggestion. Given how you like to go into songs fresh and throw certain questions you have out to the viewers, I was thinking maybe it would be interesting to follow up each reaction video with a comment response video. Just a suggestion, though I know it would probably mean even more work and longer gaps between reactions. Hope you keep this going and wish you success. :)

      Richard Salazar not a big fan of "gangster rap" as a genre name. Given to us by the media to turn us off and make people shy away from the real message in "gangsta rap". Most likely they never actually analyzed OR listened to the lyrics, only hearing strong words in the songs and labeling them as gangster lyrics. None of the rappers of that genre were actually gangsters either so... can we all agree to retire the term? Also, if were gonna get technical NWA started it all, they would be the black sabbath of "gangster" rap

      Your missing my point. I was simply saying this song is one of the first rap songs that wasn’t about partying, it was about the harsh reality of street life. Ice T was actually before nwa and he said in an interview he was greatly influenced by this song. Whatever you want to call it(gangster rap/reality rap) this was one of the first well known examples of that kind of music. Gil Scott Heron is another example but he isn’t as well known

    Loving this series as a huge hip hop head and amateur metalhead. I always thought there should be more crossover in the fanbase, there's obviously huge differences in the genres but there's some hidden similarities. Especially the way albums are often so conceptual and tell a story overall. Great work!

  • @brainwashed2390

    This is rap, proto rap would be 'Double Dutch Bus' by Frankie Smith, or late disco songs; the first rap song itself was by Sugarhill Gang - 'Rapper's Delight' (which would be good to react to too!) for most people, although some hardcore critics debate it due to no definite way to define what "rapping" really is. (i.e. does fast singing count? or does it have to be spoken?) HOWEVER it is definitely the first HIP HOP song

    • @ArtisanWindchimes

      Should definitely do Rapper’s Delight, so much around that song and the release of that record helped create hip hop as we know it today, but The Message just did so much to open up and expand on the possibilities of what rappers could do. It went from just a party, to having something to say and having you really listen. Amazes me every time I listen to it that it never seems dated.
      Definitely have to educate myself on Preacher’s Delight. Appreciate the knowledge.

    (I really hope y'all see this, big fan already tbh)
    Y'all really got a dope perspective, I wish y'all had more videos because y'all got no clue how excited I am to see how your opinions evolve. I don't know how to explain it but one example that sort of highlights just how interesting your perspectives are is how RDO mentioned he's gravitating towards Nas, Wu Tang, Biggie but not so much Kendrick Lamar and Eminem in your video about Nas's - State of Mind. Now RDO even mentioned he couldn't explain why, but most rap fans I think know exactly where you're coming from. Eminem and Kendrick have a real strong emphasis on "Technical Skill" which in turn produces a lot of high-caliber, fast paced raps. Another similarity they have is although Em is an older artist, Em and Kendrick both have newer/post 2000's sound. Where as compared to the songs you've reviewed from Nas, Wu Tang, and Biggie, they are all from the mid to late 90's.
    So basically what I'm trying to say is that even though you're obviously not Hip Hop Professors, you both articulate yourself in a way that's very surprisingly still in tune and on point of what's actually going on. You guys come off a lot smarter than I think you realize haha. Also do more videos!!!
    Just a few final thoughts haha. One is I like how you choose not to go to Rap Genius before the videos, good idea of going in fresh. Definitely would be interesting to see how your thoughts change after reading through what these songs actually mean though.
    Also you guys should check out some more newer artists, preferably from this generation would be neat to see. I think you'd be surprised on just how diverse and how many different influences are infused into one song. I got a feeling you guys will really become big fans of rap after checking out this group called The Flatbush Zombies. I'd LOVE to see you're thoughts on songs like Live From Hell or No Religion haha. I really think you'd like em. There's also like artists like Kanye West with songs like Jesus Walks or Power. No clue how you'd think personally. I already know a lot of people would watch y'all review them, seriously A LOT. Even though I know you both would hate them, artists like Tekashi69 or Lil Yachty would be insanely hilarious
    Goddamn I need to cut this short, anyway if y'all read this I really appreciate it and DO MORE REVIEWS!!!!!!
