I'd suggest Survival of the Fittest some years ago, but Shook Ones pt II was always a top banger and 8 Mile only made it bigger. Survival of the Fittest is also an important piecee of history tho, "thug life we still livin it!" and Pac getting offended. Still tho, I'll say Shook Ones pt II is better, just my opinion.

hes not only rapping from the perspective of a gun, but he is portraying a human life with his story. the first verse he is not being used as a gun, he is carried (like a baby) around and he is just describing his environment (like children just learning about everything).
in the second verse he is a youth and wants action, he wants to shoot, but his owner doesnt let him (like parents dont let teenagers do everything) and he also describes his own body (like a 13 year old gets to know his body more)
in the last and third verse he is old and wise and just thinks about more relevant things and when his owner wants to use him, he doesnt shoot because he is tired of all the violence.
sorry for my bad english, i'm german, but i noticed nobody has explained it yet. this song is a masterpiece.
also notice how the melody of the beat is a loop and his first and last words in the song are "damn!". and how he is picked up again by somone after all the trouble in the end of the story. this is all to show that life will start again all over after death.

I am SO happy you guys like Nas. He's my favorite rapper of all time and I own all of his albums. The early stage of his career he was blessed with great production, but his albums over the years pass his first two, can be hit or miss as far as production. So if you're always expecting good production from Nas you'd probably be disappointed. BUT he has hundreds of songs with double meanings; poetic license, creative stories, complex rhyme schemes, etc. My personal recommendations would be:
    It Ain't Hard To Tell
    One Mic
    Black Zombies
    I Can
    Fetus
    Rewind
    Fried Chicken
    Sly Fox
    Daughters
    Doo Rags
On a side note, I think it'd be fun if you guys delved into the back and forth hip hop beefs. Tupac Vs. Biggie; Nas Vs. Jay-Z, 50 Cent Vs. Ja Rule, Eminem Vs. Benzino, Common Vs. Ice Cube, NWA Vs. Ice Cube, Canibus Vs. LL Cool J, etc. You may have to do a little research to understand the lines in the diss tracks, and your hip hop IQ has to be a little higher to catch everything but I don't know, just think it'd be fun to watch.

The point of the track is that he's speaking from the perspective of the gun. If you go back and listen to it again knowing that now it makes more sense.

  • @Year-zy2ll

Nas is tired of being used to kill people so he purposely jamed himself so he wouldn’t fire. That led to other person firing and hitting his owner. His owner dies but someone else picks him up.
    He says “Damn”

    • @DarthGrimby
      @DarthGrimby 6 років тому +13

Year 3000 yeah we picked up on that on the second listen. The song starts AND ends with “Damn” indicating the cyclical nature of the mistake history repeats itself etc.

Rapping from the perspective of a gun, in this case a Desert Eagle. He uses that perspective to show you the reality of his world. He tells a story. Very unique and considered not only a classic but one of the best Hip-Hop songs of all time. Eminem did it years later with Stan. He rapped from the perspective of a fan and responding to him. Anyways, I love this song. Nas is a legend.

    • @xldjvista

Elvis Maduro I can see why. It really is a great song. Makes me want to explore more Nas

    • @Okieant
      @Okieant 6 років тому

He's my favorite artist of all time. Always start with Illmatic. It's considered a top 2 or 3 best hip hop album of all time if not THE best of all time. When we use the word "classic", we refer to the quality of that album. Nas doesn't have a bad song in his Discography until the 5th song of his 2nd album (It Was Written..that's the album this song is from). His best albums are Illmatic, It Was Written, Stillmatic, Hip Hop Is Dead, I am..., God's Son, and Life is Good. Stay away from Nastradamus. Street's Disciple was his double album that got a lot of flack but I personally really liked it but I think people weren't ready for the mature side of Nas back in 2005. " I am..." to me was great but not as good as it could have been because a lot of the tracks were leaked before it dropped and Nas changed the album last minute. Untitled caused a lot of controversy and it could have been a great album but fell short in some areas. The Lost Tapes is one that everyone seems to love cuz it contains a lot of unused tracks due to the issues with "I am.." and Nastradamus. Nas' biggest issue is that after making Illmatic, people have expected him to make an album of that quality again which is nearly impossible and Nas took a ton of risks with his music and had a lot of bullshit happen to him during his career but he's still here and his new album should be out in 2 weeks.
      Notable Songs:
      - All of Illmatic as well as the song of this video
      - The Message
      - Affirmative Action
      - Street Dreams
      - If I Ruled the World (big commercial success)
      - One Mic (Probably his best ever song)
      - Made You Look (the remix is ridiculous as well)
      - Rewind
      - Ether (he murders Jay-Z in this classic beef)
      - Hate Me Now
      - I Can
      - Still Dreaming (ft. Kanye West)
      - Black Republicans (ft Jay-Z...this is how they squashed their beef)
      - Nas is Like
      - We Will Survive
      - Money is My Bitch
      - Thief's Theme
      - Street's Disciple
      - The Don
      - Nasty
      - Locomotive
      - The Black Bond
      - Cherry Wine
I could add more but these are good

If/when you guys start exploring Nas catalog start with his first album "Illmatic" (The album NY State of Mind is from). He started recording it at age 18 and its still considered to be one of the best albums in Hip Hop. Even at that young of an age there is genius in his work. You really cant go wrong with Nas though, hes an incredible lyricist. As far as recommendations go, "Cartoons and Cereal" by Kendrick Lamar is one of my favorites of his.

This was an awesome video and concept. I definitely like this. I don't listen to much heavy metal, but I do love lots of bands. I remember hearing this song when I was in middle school and thinkin that this guy has to be the best rapper alive to write a song from the perspective of a gun and all the personifications and entendres was awesome. I hope you guys keep this going. I will definitely tune in.

This song is probably one of the most powerful songs ever written, not just in hip-hop, but in all genres. This is one of the few tracks that still brings tears to my eyes, no matter how many times I hear it.

Nas personifies a gun. Nas is a hip hop genius. He's been cited to have writen the Bible of hip hop by another rapper. He has been studied in college, presented by some professor (who became known for having Nas songs as a subject in his University course). This song for example, great use of the personification literary technique.

Star Wars that shit.. make sure it you do songs with lyrics especially with nas. Nas is one of the most creative and intelligent rappers out there and it's better to see the lyrics to understand

Really love what you guys do. Respect for being able to recognize the skills in Nas and Wu Tang. Along the same lines, you would enjoy A Tribe Called Quest who have the same quality of music but with different content. Please react to Award Tour - A Tribe Called Quest

Love these videos as a fan of hip hop and metal. You’re both very open minded when it comes to new music. That being said, I’d love to watch your reaction to anything by GZA. Specifically anything from his album Liquid Swords. He’s a member of the Wu-tang Clan which you’ve reacted to before.

React to Capital steez. He was one of the most promising lyricists and unfortunately lost his life at a very young age. You should react to some of his songs e.g. Survival tactics (with Joey Badass), Free The Robots, Invision, Stars… the list could be much longer. Just give him a shot :D
