This was my life, and is still to this day... trying to heal, forgive and pray. Watching this stirred up so much that I thought I had put behind me. Maybe it will never go away. "It was a long time ago... but not long enough." That hit me. Thank you for this movie.

I lived being scared of a drunk daddy. Mother was paralyzed from waist down when they married. He was a drinker. He was mean to her at times. Like rages. He never hit me but I was worried most of my life. He slung her out of her wheel chair beat her when I was at college. I quit. I made our living. we got our house and my car. I was 18 and made our living. He didn’t help me. I had no one but me and mother. No one helped us. I got a good job. Thank God. We were happy. Mother was. It was a tough time all the years he lived with us. She passed years ago. She had just turned 69 then. I miss her. She was my rock. I hope no one has to live in fear most of their childhood It is not a good feeling.

@@Aspenrobinson8there’s no way to say who should’ve or shouldn’t have done anything ones life. I had very wonderful loving parents but I wanted to travel and have ( clean) kind of fun in my 20’s and was able to get I good job that afforded me the opportunity to do that. I wasn’t in the least interested in being tied to marriage or the responsibility of a child during the years I considered my time! I wasn’t ready in my mid thirties but the only one I came close to marrying just didn’t work out. I spent a life of various female problems and not glad I never had a child at 48 or I’d be raising an 8 year old in this world! No way! On the other hand as remaining single and never having my own kids I’ve been able to help many other people! Took care of a stroke survivor for 17 years in my home when her family just didn’t step up. And though I was completely naive to the drug world till getting in relationship with someone and had absolutely no clue, I became wise enough to get out of that relationship but have been able to help several struggling people. I saw my then 27 year old who now refers to me as hid Godmother because he needed a mother’s love so desperately and I’m the only completely clean, unconditional love and stable person he’s ever lived with for this long. Unfortunately he suffers severely from Schizoaffective Disorder Bipolar Type and is still co-occurring at times. He’s, in part, the reason why I’m a very big advocate for the underserved and there are way too many of us. I’m now looking into working as a State of MD Certified Peer Support Specialist and may pursue a degree even though I’m in my fifties! My brain says I’m 38 but that’s another story 🤣🤣🤣

Parents who batter their children probably were battered themselves. Battered children never forget. Some will strike back, sooner or later, others dive deep and find the reasons for their parents atrocious behaviour and find a way to forgive. Those who forgive have often licked their wounds with alcohol or other substances. Never raise a hand to a child. Parents with anger management issues need to get help. Some people should never have children.

Men and women alike should be truly loving toward their children first. If one part of the marriage/relationship shows the slightest action of abuse, they should be real parents and protect the children. People should take extra time and caution to get to know the person the intend to marry. And at the first sign of abuse to oneself or the children, run as if you saw the Devil, because that is exactly who they are. If one covers up for the abuser, one is just as that ugly being from hell.

@@mrknight7957🙄 it’s not “virtually impossible.” Stop making excuses for being weak and not doing the most important job of a mom; to protect her children. These excuses that people make; “narcissists” 🤪🙄 “trauma bonded” are nothing but cop outs. I don’t give a flying f*ck if an adult woman chooses to stay with an abuser. It’s when she also has children and she allows them to witness the abuse, or worse allows them to be abused.
Don’t tell me I don’t “know how abuse works.” Because I absolutely do. And I didn’t allow that sh*t to continue. That meant being homeless with two small children for almost a year, but I figured it out, because I HAD to! I never even got any assistance from the state. Both of my parents are deceased, so definitely no family support. We couch surfed until I found a good enough job that allowed me to get a small apartment. Now, 8 years later, I just bought a house.
      It ABSOLUTELY can be done.
The only thing that comes from saying things like, “it’s virtually impossible to leave a narcissist 🤪” is creating a cycle of defeat and helplessness.
It’s not at all helpful to the betterment of society as a whole.
It’s time to stop with the excuses. Too many kids are being harmed. Which only serves to continue the cycle. STOP IT.

Allot of abused women are not aware of the psychological damage their children suffer, until after they get out. Then it’s allot of therapy, and healing ❤️‍🩹 most of the women who are being abused are victims too. Sadly, and unintentionally, how the abuse affects the mother, spills onto her children. It’s still not her fault. You can’t really understand unless you’ve been through it, or well trained psychologist or therapist. All the rest is negative judgements, criticism and victim blaming.
Yeah it seems like common sense to most people outside of the situation. You don’t know. Don’t judge.
      It’s unfortunate in every way.
When it comes to our children, we’d do anything to protect them. When you’re beaten, abused, controlled, you don’t know the terror, fear, etc… not saying it’s an excuse but it’s a legitimate fact. You carefully plan an escape. It can take months and sometimes even years. Believe me, most abused woman are doing the best they can to survive that situation.
Everyone’s story and situation is different.
      Don’t judge! Care!

It is a conscious choice to forgive, in spite of your feelings. Your feelings and emotions will get in line if you give it time, but you can not do it without God's help. You are not doing the forgiving for the person who hurt you, but for yourself .

could have been a good movie but I have seen paint dry faster.
I am a woman but I grew up in similar circumstances. Many times I thought of ways to stop my father (actual father) from the cruelty mental and physical he visited upon us. But with only 2 younger sisters and a baby bro, there was nothing I could do except kill him. My mother said that he was not worth going to jail over. So at 15 I left. I never forgave him, but time has helped me understand things better. There is never any excuse for hitting and torturing women and children, but I can see the circumstances that formed him and so just erasing him from my memory is the best I can do.
But if I had been a boy and had a brother the same age there would have been no way he got away with it.

Hi, I am confused about that too. Like you said was Scott not his real son? I've been scrolling through the comments hoping someone has the answer 😕.

Great movie. Although, I wouldn't describe this as a thriller, it was more of a crime drama

I agree with the comment about the mother. She was a disgrace to let her son be abused like that. No excuse for it.

Quit blaming the woman!! She was a victim of abuse too. Blame the dad and those who sit around and do nothing to help domestic violence victims 😊

Two things can be true she was a victim but was also responsible for the welfare of her minor children. There are always choices but it doesn't mean they'll be easy or without consequences

It's a shame that this kid was abused most of his young life. I as a mother can not understand why the mother didn't protect him. No man is worth staying with over money or whatever at the expense of her children ever. God will always find away even when you don't think there is away. Get away from the abuser period and yes I know that isn't always easy but it beats the alternative in the end. Prayers for everyone that's been or is in this situation.

Narc step father. He gets his power by abusing a kid. Coward. Mother is the same coward for not protecting her kids. This movie reminds me of my dysfunctional family . Although, the level of violence is not the same, it was enough to traumatize everyone for life. I’m still healing from it all.

As a man, men who abuse women and children make me sick. As a father I could never hurt my children . I'm married 20 years with no step children but if a man is man enough to love the mother her child is your child. I don't understand these weak men beating on people they should be protecting. My heart bleeds for anyone enduring this or suffering from trauma because of this. If your struggling PLEASE DO NOT let a weak and broken man define your future. Do not be apprehensive to seek out the help you need and PLEASE break the cycle. God bless you and even though I don't know you I'm praying for you ❤

There is no excuse to allow your child/children to be abused by anyone..Parents are protectors not predators..and whenever they are predators instead of protectors it is time to LEAVE & REPORT..before matters are taking within your own hands..

People that find that they don't have the Heart or whatever strong reason not to be a good stepdad or Stepmom should "never "put themselves in that position. Just walk away from that relationship before it starts. be honest about it. There's no shame in honesty. Children deserve to be loved and nurtured, "never abused and resented". Find a Partner that shares your values especially when it comes to your babies. ❤.
Their are some Folks that make Excellent Stepparents. I was blessed to have hada Wonderful Stepfather in my life that I thought hung the moon, a very kind man, he's since passed away. Rest in peace ❤️ Buddy

This movie was heartbreaking. Two brothers and treated differently. Great movie, sad situations. I do love how he helped the young man who father was belittling him. He also encouraged and gave him advice for his future. A true fact:: Put your trust first in JESUS by first seeking ye that kingdom of GOD. Everyone keep JESUS first, trust him for all things. May you be blessed
