I was a producer of this film, and writer of both the screenplay and True Crime book "Citizen Jane" that it is based on. When the casting director phoned me and asked "what do you think about Meatloaf for the homicide detective," I jumped on the chance. He phoned me a week later to ask how to play the character and I told him the real detective was a great interrogator because he never talked "me talking ain't the point" was the key line in the screenplay and film. He fumbled around like Columbo. But let me respond to a few comments here - a number of folks said there are "mistakes" in the script because cops would never let Jane and her boyfriend Tom view the crime scene and "touch things" and contaminate it. They never touched anything in the film, but that's EXACTLY what they did - tour the scene to look for anything missing and clues to Gertrude's activities. But it's even worse - I left out what the first cop really did. San Jose PD was short on officers on their night shift, so he let Jane and Tom SPEND THE NIGHT IN ANOTHER BEDROOM that was not part of the crime scene. That's correct. And it was during that night - after Jane pointed out the check registry was missing from her Aunt's checkbook - that Tom replaced it. And that's what hung him - when a 2nd photographer arrived the next day and re-photographed the entire scene, the checkbook had been moved slightly and another detective - who did not confer with the first - reported the checkbook was normal. IT'S NOT LAW & ORDER - cops make mistakes all the time. The real detective in this case compensated for the mistakes of others - and that's how Meatloaf played him. Years later, that brilliant detective put all these complex pieces together and compared everything from e very investigator the preceded him. We call them the Super-cops, and he was one of them..
I think this was a compelling movie and have watch it a few times.. By the way my father was a cop in san jose and i was born there although he died well before this crime and I didn't remember it. I would have liked to see more of the behind the scenes detective work.. For instance when they first found the rag stuffed down her throat and then the part about the handy man . He later tells Jane he was in Monterey but he had told her he cashed a check a few hours after the murder.. Also the 1st detective didn't do much of a follow up.. Many must have thought she knew the murderer and it was not a robbery.. Also the detective thinking that prompted him to start investigating the LA connection.. It is interesting how someone could kill a women that he knew and was the woman that raised Jane. And then go to her house like he had just gotten back from a trip. You are right this detective was brilliant . Anyway a movie worth watching

My most heart-felt sympathy for your terrible loss. I'm a member of CITIZENS AGAINST HOMICIDE, the organization Jane Alexander started with Jan Miller - whose daughter was murdered at 19 in a crime that was never solved. My heart breaks over every story I have heard there. But they all keep fighting back.

@@jasongabson8611 She died of cancer a few days before the movie went into production. It took me 14 years to get it made. I sold it to CBS, then Court TV - the same years they all went out of the movie business. It was an unlikely buy at Hallmark because they never did a True Crime/True Life Movie, but they loved it so much they wanted to take a risk. They gave me more freedom and control than any writer/producer could ask for. They were great.
Such an Excellent Movie! I just love the True Crime Movies!! And to think Jane Alexander solved 20 Cases, herself! She was a True Hero for all those people she helped!
Surprisingly good - Meat Loaf died recently and this performance records how well he carried the role of an untalkative cop. I wish he'd done more as an actor.

Truth, they say, is sometimes stranger than fiction. This movie exemplifies a glaring example of the adage. Salute to the resolve of Jane to beat all the odds and have, in a sense, justice 'served'..."in a sense"--- because nothing would bring back the august Gertrude. The real life 'Jane Alexander' disentangled several homicide cases...that is remarkable ! Also, I completely agree with Sarah and Maureen (below) ! An engaging movie !
Absolutely great movie, thanks. More often than not it takes people with guts to do the police detectives work for them .she was a hero for victims with no voice
G’day from Australia 🇦🇺. Do detectives and cops really spend most of their day eating at takeaway restaurants for free? Why do they always show LE eating donuts 🍩 or hotdogs …etc…etc. Also instead of looking fit and strong, they usually are quite overweight. How would they chase after a suspect these days? ✌️
Meatloaf was fantastic 👌 had no idea he could act. This was a brilliant movie Justice Served to a cunning evil manipulator. Sorry to here Jane Alexander passed away but she fought for justice for her vibrant beautiful aunt. ❤❤❤💘 💘
I had a restaurant close to where Meat Loaf lived. We served Meat Loaf named after him. He would come in occasionally and order two Meat Loaf specials. He was very nice. He brought his grandmother once.
This movie is amazing. Especially considering the fact it is based on truth. I pray every victim receives justice. Only then is there is a possibility of some measure of peace. They will never receive total or complete peace, but maybe a small measure.
EXCELLENT movie ..cast...she was a HERO..and kudos to her for the empathy and help she gave OTHER victims( Meatloaf was wonderful..and if no one knows this..Gertrude was played by the Marvelous Patty McCormick-who starred on Bway in THE BAD SEED-She was chilling and excellent as the chil murederess)..
Loved this movie well written great actors loved the no nonesense Detective. That Smart Arse thought he would get away with it. As soon as the boyfriend mentioned Investing in Switzerland the RED FLAG was raised Switerland protects all monies in their accounts he was sooo cunning. But the Detective and Jane were sooo Smart. Brilliant 👌
She is also SOOOOOOO pretty. I love her looks. And she appreciate life, has a great attitude about everything (at least that is a quality I love about her screen presence in all her roles that I have so far seen).

I have watched this Great movie quite a few times . I couldn't see another actress playing the role, Ally Sheedy was amazed and the real treat was Meatloaf. What a great man of many talents. ❤❤❤
I always admired "Meatloaf" as an singer but as an actor I didn't have much to go by except for the movie, "Rocky Horror Show" of the 70s. I'm glad he gained positive results from movies too. He was talented for sure.
Never seen this Movie before First Time and I didn't Realize the Detective was Meatloaf till I Read it! He's a Great Singer and a Great Actor!!! Great Movie!!❤️💯💯💯
Just have to wonder if people in San Francisco hearts break when they see movies showing the streets of their home town in old movies compared to what they live with in today’s San Francisco?
Unfortunately like the rest of the world greedy developers and Councils. My beautiful double story child hood home was bulldozed along with other beautiful conjoined homes to build a Tafe College devestated they dont appreciate history.
I feel the same way when I see movies filmed in Toronto Ontario Canada where I live. It's like another world! Our beautiful streets have been destroyed by drugs...when will they ever do anything about it I wonder....excellent movie, what a surprise to see Meatloaf! RIP
I enjoyed this. Good casting, acting and based on a true story. Meatloaf is multi talented. His videos were rock operas which also involved acting. He was perfection in Rocky Horror. I love Flannery and I'm glad he didn't allow himself to be typecast. Ally Sheedy is always on the mark. It was good to see Chuck McCann, Patty McCormack and Anne DeSalvo.
Excellent film. I have a hard time getting through a movie, but not this one. Aunt Gertrude was a wonderful person and Jane was determined to get justice for her beloved aunt after she was murdered. Jane called herself a moral person: a person who wanted justice saying you don't defraud others or kill them. Everyone in the film was good and the scenery was amazing.
All movies based on true stories are the best.... this lady really did a marvelous job of staying true to her morals and see justice served. Helping solve 20 homicides is amazing. Probably more than most overworked police can do in jobs.
Some have the gift and they don t do careers from it and some do careers without even having a clue about their real jobs ,just for the payment...To be honest from the moment her aunt was worried that Tom didnt married her yet (him being so handsome ,rich and so on,i knew he s with her for a very good reason, when the lady was found killed i had not one doubt that Tom did it ,in the moment he left in Swiss i knew he was abandoning the "ship"...damn ,watching crime movies made me good at this lol
Incredible actor Jane cheers 2women empowerment in this universe honesty respect trust family positive vibes out faith will always take us 2success n challengers
Great TV movie ! Meatloaf put the life into it; his acting was excellent. His soft low voice gave the movie an air of mystery. Ally did real well, too. I also enjoyed seeing San Francisco again. lived there in '83 .
It has however to be ensured that the murderers can't profit in any way from that. That's the reason why I don't like it when prisoners sell their stories resp. film or book rights and give interviews - and the huge amount of people who pay for it. I've heard that judges mention in the sentences that the defendant must not make any profit from their criminal actions and that any profit has to go into the restitution but I don't know if this is a kind of standard in courts.
My senile old cousin used to have a Blue Wedgwood cheese dish. It was a rare antique 50 years ago. Everyday, all day, she used to say, "Mary Ann wants that dish, but I'm not going to let her have it." The last time I was there, Mary Ann had put my cousin in a convelesant home. I took that cheese dish on a cruise through a very poor neighborhood, and dropped it off at the house that had the most kids bikes parked in the front yard. It was a small victory that I still feel great about, but this woman was incredible!
Jane lived her life heloing so many others until the day she passed. The website is very interesting. I love Ally Sheedy & Meatloaf. They did an excellent job.
Wow, good movie based on true story. There's a lot to learn, first getting to know your boyfriend don't just rely on his looks, better know his character and how he brought by his parents. Excellent movie and must watch, highly recommend especially for those who's s deeply in love. Thank you so much, more beautiful movies like this.

@@cristineconnell7803 what craziness are you talking? & why address it to ME?? My comment was saying if Meatloaf HAD taken precautions during the height of Covid, perhaps he could have survived. I do not presume to know his exact medical condition, but he was in a high risk category & I read he was not vaccinated. To imply murder is outrageous. It's obvious you believe ridiculous conspiracies & STILL want to spread your harmful misinformation. Take your nutball ideas somewhere else.
I am remembering how amazing and beautiful San Francisco once was! Its been completely over run with crime and even Whole Foods just closed their doors due to crime. Didnt have any idea the detective was Meatloaf- wow, he could have had quite a career as an actor.
"I'll do anything for you... " song artist, Meat loaf, is a very good actor too. Love the relentlessness of Jane. In the final court sitting, for a moment when that insurance policy doc was delivered I thought it gonn turn out to be her as the murderer!
Jane Alexander had a lot of guts after being fooled by her lover, but she didn't let him intimidate her and fought for her aunt's justice. Great movie and great life story !
Ah, Meatloaf, I am sorry you have left us. I enjoy him as an actor, too. This was a good role for him. I would love to have seen him do more like this.
This is an excellent movie. would recommend it to anyone! Did not realize til the end it was a true story. Amazing! She was a very strong and courageous woman.
Watched it twice great movie well scripted great acting Meat Loaf should have had his own Detectkve show was just Brilliant. Dad to hear of his passing a very kind and thoughtful human being. We all miss him. 💙 💘 💙 Blessings
Jane was good with her investigative work in this movie.I liked the detective as well. His style of investigating is different but he goes all out to get results.Eventually he received the copy of the insurance policy that convicted Tom.What an overall devious plot to inherit money by Tom.Enjoyed the movie thoroughly. Thanks for screening❤
I saw when the real Jane was interviewed on TV, and, was a real likeable lady. A real tough lady, who made it her mission in life to bring her aunt's murder to justice. Great story!
Meatloaf was wonderful in this, he should have his own TV detective series. Allie Sheedy is a great actor. The lighting was terrible on her in the beginning, you'd think the director would've asked for retakes. Very, very good movie. Thank you.
There were a few lines that didn't make sense When the cops says this was a robbery gone bad, but the evidence shows the person who came in immediately murdered her, and why would you plan to rob a house and murder some one for a silver plate.. The second cop had it right I am looking closer to home. The movie would have been better if it had showed how he found the car and some other ideas he had
@@rexolrexol7893Right, but it was a movie. One of the producers is in the comment section. He had a good bit to say about the actual crime details compared to the movie.
Great movie. What I enjoyed most, was that in the end, justice prevailed! Which is rear these days. Jane was spot on, when she said criminal justice, is criminal!
Criminal justice is even more criminal when public defenders make plea bargains that put innocent people--usually Black--into jail for a lesser crime they did not commit, because they don't think they'll be found not guilty. I loved this movie and was happy with the ending, but better a hundred guilty people go free than one innocent person be found guilty.
Such a brilliant movie !!!! Highly recommend 👌 👍 👏. Jane is such an inspiration for all...❤ Only regret being San Francisco then & now what a shame !!!😔😔😔😔
What a ride, what a cast. So glad i checked this out. Ally Sheedy, Sean Patrick Flannery, Nia Peoples, Meatloaf? Who could resist. Shocking story, super talented people. Great story telling. Horrific crime, terrible. Jane is heroic! Super strong person. I love when they make the woman strong, but not masculine. Mental toughness and inner strength come in man form and woman form. Some people are tough. With a strong moral compus. That's Jane. Loyalty and love, and jusice were her super powers. A real life Wonder Woman.
Loved the film it was also a True story. It was sad that Jane s Aunt was murdered and it was because of money. He didn't love her it was money. Jane did everything to find out who killed her Aunt. There was justice at the end. There was some awesome actor s in the film and I enjoyed the film .

Nice movie.. So sad, Jane couldn't see herself in action before she died😢... She died two days, before the movie was released.. May her soul rest in peace🙏❤🙏
One heck of a story. What love can do! Ms. Alexander got her wings on earth. A remarkable intelligent and outstanding human being. May she have peace in her life. Truly the verdict can not bring back her Aunt but it certainly did not allow the perpetrator to get away with it. She also saved her own life, if she had not acted and worked so hard to uncover the truth she may very well have lost her own life also. Many blessings to her. Ms. Alexander is one dynamic individual, smart, brave, compassionate and committed, all the fine qualities of a human being so many everywhere in the world admire and are drawn to her light wishing to refine, to nurture those qualities within ourselves so that we may also face whatever adversarial circumstances in our own lives with as much conviction, commitment, dedication, bravery, and love. Thank you Ms. Alexander for sharing your story with us. It is a valuable and important one and I hope it's telling makes better human beings of all of us and crimes like these dissipate into a past which makes a future where this kind of crime would be unthinkable and impossible. My condolences to you and the painful loss you have had to struggle through. Through your pain and loss we have witnessed the dynamics and exquisite qualities of human being and hopefully we are all changed for the better because of it, and that evolution of humanity just took one more gigantic footstep out of the dark. I pray. I thank you. May we continue forward into the light, a tomorrow preparing to be born.
If this movie is based on a true story, Jane Alexander is the most amazing woman other than another truly amazing woman who was a paratrooper shot down by Nazis when she flew into German air space. She would not allow mental and physical torture make her reveal the location and identities of WWII freedom fighters. It's so much easier to fold and give up when things go against you. These two women got the strength and resolve , God only knows from where or how they kept fighting when everything went against them. The name of this paratrooper was Hannah Senesh. She died during her interrogation after they dismembered her while she was still alive.
I have heard her amazing heart wrenching story! I have lived through a pow exp, & I have to tell you, we can bare more than we realize, then we feel GOD'S shelter in HIS wings, & HE gives you the next breath & the ability to make the next step! A really great homicide detective worked with me on my sisters murder. Coroner insisting it was an od! SHE DIDN"T LIKE DRUGS! 1 Detective listened to me, though he couldn't technically make a case without the Coroner starting it, he promised to keep his head up & looking into as he could. Coroner was a jerk & refused to even acknowledge she had severe defensive wounds all over her that hadn't been there a couple hours before when Mom left her apartment, 1 am & she was headed straight to sleep after a long day! Shortly the Detective called me to say another women died the same way in the apt below my sisters, & now they had him! He was able to add my sis in & be on the case! We had a ton of info we dug out of my sister's apt that aided them a bunch. The landlord had said the guy who lived below my sis was responsible from the beginning! It was actually 3 people that we knew of, a team that deliberately got easy to manipulate people addicted to heroin, etc & then force them to do fraudulent returns for more drugs. Only they kept shooting them up with bad dope. My sis definitely didn't do needles, but had talked with me the day before about these really nice people that were having her babysit their kitten, & were trying to talk her into trying shoving needles, the conversation ended with NO WAY! You fight like hell not to let that crap get put in you, she did GOD BLESS her! We didn't find the kitten, but for some reason they had moved in a bunch of boxes between when Mom dropped her off & a boyfriend found her dead body around 4am. We found a ton of evidence to give cops on their schemes & involved extended family members locations! Mom & I worked on it for months! Then Detective called ton say he was dead! That Detectives attitude actually helped a great deal to bare the pain of loosing her so horribly! We had spent a long day together just hours before. 4th of July wonderfully blessed time with her singing " This little light of mine, I am gonna make it shine" in her beautiful 4 octave voice, while all my kids were doing their sparklers! She fought hard, then was with JESUS immediately! No one could ever hurt her again!
Thank you for sharing the name of this great woman. I read more about her and found her resolve, strength, fortitude….(so many more words that don’t fully describe her well) …is just out of this world. Even with the threat of the nazis killing her mother, she did not budge. What a hero.

Worth watching. Ok, so smooth, predictable not ream mystery or surprising twists and turns to keep you off your seat, but then it isn't fiction. Great acting and encouraging end when justice was served. The best part was what the criminal said at the end! Showed up his true nature then!
Really good movie here and I'm very selective what I watch. Great to see a woman taking the lead role and calling the shots for a change. Justice being done as it should be, that also makes for a big change too.

The aunt would be proud of the niece. Clean direction. Wonderful acting by all. An eye opener not to trust anyone who plays with money.

Loved this movie. Jane is a fabulous actress. Her level headedness and determination what an inspiration to us all.
The detective work and the integrity of the prosecutor were decisive. There are things no-one can do alone.
Truth absolutely IS stranger than fiction, @rajeevk.pathak771! Iustitia Servitur!

Hello Gary how are you doing today
Meatloaf was fantastic 👌 had no idea he could act.
This was a brilliant movie Justice Served to a cunning evil manipulator.
Sorry to here Jane Alexander passed away but she fought for justice for her vibrant beautiful aunt. ❤❤❤💘 💘
I had a restaurant close to where Meat Loaf lived. We served Meat Loaf named after him. He would come in occasionally and order two Meat Loaf specials. He was very nice. He brought his grandmother once.
How lucky you got to honor and meet him.
Oh that is so cool ❤️ 💙 thanks for sharing
Was that in NASHVILLE ?
This movie is amazing. Especially considering the fact it is based on truth. I pray every victim receives justice. Only then is there is a possibility of some measure of peace. They will never receive total or complete peace, but maybe a small measure.
Beauty
EXCELLENT movie ..cast...she was a HERO..and kudos to her for the empathy and help she gave OTHER victims( Meatloaf was wonderful..and if no one knows this..Gertrude was played by the Marvelous Patty McCormick-who starred on Bway in THE BAD SEED-She was chilling and excellent as the chil murederess)..
I think Ally Sheedy is a man. Most of them are, so it's a high probability. Look at her face, body...

I highly recommend this movie. Great acting, well told TRUE story, definitely worth the watch!
RIP to both Aunt Trudy and to Jane. ♥

Loved this movie well written great actors loved the no nonesense Detective. That Smart Arse thought he would get away with it. As soon as the boyfriend mentioned Investing in Switzerland the RED FLAG was

But the Detective and Jane were sooo

it cant be good if it has no nudity

@@gast4215 Meatloaf began his career on Broadway in "Hair." He's an accomplished actor.
Great movie. Not over the top as so many movies these days. Really enjoyed it. Jane is one hell of a woman.
Of course we all knew it her husband. Same old story.
Meatloaf's acting never once disappointing...and i love movies based on true stories. So real.
Never seen this Movie before First Time and I didn't Realize the Detective was Meatloaf till I Read it! He's a Great Singer and a Great Actor!!! Great Movie!!❤️💯💯💯
thats for sure Meatloaf is the best
Just have to wonder if people in San Francisco hearts break when they see movies showing the streets of their home town in old movies compared to what they live with in today’s San Francisco?
i'm living in turkiye and i have that feeling when i see old movies of istanbul :(
Unfortunately like the rest of the world greedy developers and Councils.
My beautiful double story child hood home was bulldozed along with other beautiful conjoined homes to build a Tafe College devestated they dont appreciate history.
I was thinking the exact same thing when viewing the movie. It is such a shame to see our cities and their residents degrading.
I feel the same way when I see movies filmed in Toronto Ontario Canada where I live. It's like another world! Our beautiful streets have been destroyed by drugs...when will they ever do anything about it I wonder....excellent movie, what a surprise to see Meatloaf! RIP
Great movie. Actors, plot, music, filmscenes.
What gutsy woman is our relentless, morally upright Ms.Jane!

So glad you liked it, axiomist.
I like that justice was served and that this is base on a true story. We need more movies based on true stories.
We absolutely do, @anndoupont9479!
Everyday, all day, she used to say, "Mary Ann wants that dish, but I'm not going to let her have it."
The last time I was there, Mary Ann had put my cousin in a convelesant home.
I don't recall ever seeing Meat Loaf in an acting role, but he played this role like an absolutely seasoned actor, what a job.
Meat Loaf started out acting, and in musical theatre. He's done Shakespeare.
He's in Rocky Horror Picture Show
Check out the movie Fight Club, he's outstanding! Brad Pitt & Edward Norton are the starts in the movie but for me, it's Meatloaf all the way!
Wow, good movie based on true story. There's a lot to learn, first getting to know your boyfriend don't just rely on his looks, better know his character and how he brought by his parents.

Excellent story, well acted and an ending not expected. Well worth the 90 minutes.
There were a few lines that didn't make sense When the cops says this was a robbery gone bad, but the evidence shows the person who came in immediately murdered her, and why would you plan to rob a house and murder some one for a silver plate..

Meatloaf… what a great actor he was!! Great movie.
If this movie is based on a true story, Jane Alexander is the most amazing woman other than another truly amazing woman who was a paratrooper shot down by Nazis when she flew into German air space. She would not allow mental and physical torture
make her reveal the location and identities of WWII freedom fighters.
It's so much easier to fold and give up when things go against you. These two women got the strength and resolve
, God only knows from where or how they kept fighting when everything went against them.
