I still don't understand why they had a musical episode with David Bowie, where his character didn't even sing. What kind of logic is that?
Agreed; the only logical reason that I can think of is that it would have cost Nick big bucks to have him actually sing, which is a no-no when you're doing a quick cash grab.
Spongebob logic. It can be kinda funny if you think about it the right way, but, more likely, Nick was able to pay him for his voice acting, but couldn't have him sing. Coroprate shenanigans can be weird like that sometimes.
I'd imagine it's like that episode of The Simpsons that has Michael Jackson as guest character. Only The Simpsons hired some one to sing (and do a really good job at it).
The Atlantis in this episode is nothing like the other atlantis
Anthony Desantis Atlantis was supposedly a country inhabited by people, and it was sunk by the gods for their greed. A few survivors somehow managed to fund their way to other continents and spark human innovation. This episode has absolutely nothing to do with Pluto's Atlantis.
To answer one possible question about this special, with how they could get David Bowie and _not_ have him sing, this special was made not too long after he'd had a heart attack on stage, so it was more than likely they didn't want to push him too hard in fear it could happen again.
Yeah, but SpongeBob brings so much money in for Nickelodeon, that you would think that they would do one of these two things in this situation:
1. Don't have David Bowie in the episode at all, since in my opinion it's kind of pointless to have someone who can sing as well as he does, in an episode, where he doesn't sing.
2. Wait with the TV-movie until he was feeling better. I mean was there really no way for Nick to postpone this special, without going bankrupt or ruining their reputation? (although at that point it would've been too late for Nick anyway) Waiting for David Bowie to recover from his heart attack would've been a completely understandable reason to wait with the TV-movie, don't you think?
But that happened 3 years ago at the time the episode came out
From what I've heard this was Casey Alexander's least favorite episode that he worked on. Not "A Pal for Gary." Not "One Coarse Meal." THIS episode.
I suppose it's understandable.
Denzel Crocker He's actually proud making things like Pet Sitter Pat and One Coarse Meal.
You should get an F
@The Eternal Induction Its your opinion but I hate them because a pal for Gary has spongebob being completely oblivious to Puffy Fluffy's actions and blaming them on Gary! I don't like one coarse meal because krabs wants plankton to commit suicide.
The Eternal Induction I agree One Coarse Meal is a Ok episode to me because the only thing bad is that Suicide Joke and Krabs Laughing at it. Also nothing was funny
Atlantis Squarepantis Rantis. There, I did it.
0:40 Awwww.....But, I actually loved it when you sang the review. It was easy to sing and listen to and overall the song you did was alot of fun.
Jonny Boy because your fat *laughing meanly
More like Atlantis Squarepantis Rantis.
Atlantis SquareRantis
Those would make amazing titles for this video
What the splinter was to the eyes is what atlantis squarepantis is to the ears.
Speaking of "Willy Wonka", the actor of Willy Wonka, Gene Wilder, died recently. R.I.P.
BriannaBird Davis Though we still have the reboot Wonka (Johnny Depp).
WHY DIDNT YOU CALL IT AN ATLANTIC SQUAREPANTIS RANT-IS
Pieguy think it was obvious to named it.
square PANTY's did any else notice that.
cybershockandifrit Haha lol
Or Atlantis Squarerantis
Or Atlantic Rant-Pantis
Another negative aspect to point out about this episode is there are characters singing but the guest on the episode, you know a certain famous musician, does not even sing. What a waste of potential for having a talented person on the show like they did with Alton Brown in House Fancy, way to go Spongebob staff.
Don't forget Johnny Depp, who had like 10 lines in the entire special.
YOU HAD ONE JOB NICK MAKE DAVID BOWIE SING AND YOU SCREWED UP.
Not funny.
Yeah, this episode was a complete waste of David Bowie’ talent (may he RIP).
Ugh. The utter waste of one of the greatest British rockers of all time still gets to me. Especially after his passing. They had a great opportunity to work with a great man and they WASTED it. They will NEVER get him again, and that's something they should be very upset about. This put this at the very bottom of the spongebob episodes in my book.
I just..... Really love David Bowie okay
Except they're not. They actually think what they did was "clever" and "indistinguishable." And it is insulting.
If you're gonna go the "singer V.A. doesn't sing" route - which, I wouldn't recommend - then make it a joke. They could've had it where Bowe's character wanted to do a musical number but the others wouldn't let him, or things just kept interrupting him, or something like that. That would've at least been an ATTEMPT at comedy
are they going to ruin all british artists? Choir Boys featuring Coldplay. A pal for Gary and gary is voiced by Gorillaz
+Murderous King Boo One Coarse Meal: Guest Starring The Beatles.
Same here, he's my all-time favorite musical artist and I'm very upset with how they had wasted the chance at something potentially great with him, for example they could have had him write at least one decent song for his character to sing. Look at what Bowie did in Labyrinth for example, he wrote all the songs in that movie and they're phenomenal. I wasn't expecting anything along the lines of Magic Dance in Atlantis Squarepantis but SOMETHING written and sung by him would have been good. But nope, they have a voice actor who is a singer on, IN A MUSICAL NONETHELESS, and he doesn't even sing!
Randy Breeze The splinter featuring Radiohead
I feel like Atlantis Squarepantis is the pinnacle of boring, but Truth or Square is by far the pinnacle of frustration.
I will say I don't hate this special but I didn't find this really special either. But there was a reason why Atlantis Sqaurepantis was made like this. One of the writers of the episode said they originally wanted this special to be an 11 minute episode. But the executives demanded it to be a 40 movie and to be made as quickly as possible. This caused the writers stress and they couldn't think properly the movie which is why the songs are not very good, the story is a rip off of another movie and the comedy is very light.
BRRGames That sounds logical. It also might be the reason Casey Alexander hate this episode the most.
Life blblbikvbjigkvloibfkisjdk
They also referenced Wizard of Oz at the end.
They get millions , but they still rush their own workers
Your song is still better than the songs in the episode.
Exactly. xD
Super ahmed I agree
I personally didn’t enjoy it.
Agreed
Very much agreed.
I don't think this episode was all that bad, but the part that really bothered me, was how in the begining the atlantis people said they gave up weapons, yet when they're chasing spongebob around for popping the bubble, they're carrying something that looks pretty similar to a weapon.
Mmmm now that you mentioned it your right I feel like they only said that so that SpongeBob and his friends wouldn’t have to worry about being killed by them only for them afterward to immediately go “well looks like you destroyed our bubble now time to kill you”like how does that make sense I thought they said they wouldn’t do that yet afterwards THEY DO IT!
0:39 OH COME ON!!!! I wanted to hear that again. Thats more of a good song than all of the mediocre songs from Atlantis Squarepantis.
That song was funny!
“Start off with a slow moving sooooooong”
Truth or Square was an insult. Like, I felt that Nickelodeon/Viacom kicked my in the balls after it. It infuriated me so much I came out of hiatus to make a review of it back when it first aired.
It was the 10th anniversary special of a series I have been watching for 10 years, since the very beginning. It talked about "all the secrets will be revealed," including the Krabby Patty Secret Formula. The commercials strait up lied to the viewers on that one. All these celebrities were going to help celebrate SpongeBob's 10th anniversary; like they've been a fan for 10 years and talk about how Spongebob influenced them or something.. Oh, and there was a burger king toy deal; so it was supposed to be "a big deal."
Then what do they do? The celebrities act like they don't even know who Spongebob is. The montages are all original animation (I wanted clip show for that). They make up stories/answers that no one wanted. They make up stupid "alternate characters as the main characters" and "spongebob with a 40s animation style" for "what spongebob almost was" instead of actual test footage/pilots. They don't show of anyone associated with the production of the series like the creator or Tom Kenny as himself (not patchy), and instead opt for made-up celebrities like "the queen" and "the guy on the penny." And when we're about to finally hear the Krabby Patty secret formula, something every fan has been wondering for 10 years, "nah we're just not going to tell you, you're dumb if you thought we were actually going to say it," EVEN THOUGH THE COMMERCIALS SAID "It's time you found out the krabby patty secret formula, ALL WILL BE REVEALED!" Well, it won't be too long before we get to the 20th anniversary. Hopefully we get something actually good.
They got David Bowie they do a Willy Wonka parody and they don’t let him sing a parody of Pure Imagination
What was wrong with the 8 bit style of the characters? I know the song kinda sucked, but I think the 8 bit sprites themselves were animated very well and looked pretty fine to me.
That's the only part of the episode that had some creativity in it
oh l think it looked horrible
Well yeah of course, but the sprites themselves where pretty well made even if they didn't match the old arcade feel they where trying to get.
Eh, the arcade game in Gravity Falls looked a LOT more convincing!
+Paintamaster2000 Hell yeah
I remember seeing this episode when it first aired. They skipped the Patchy segments (which I didn't even realize were part of it at first and STILL couldn't tell you what they're about) and instead added a 15 minute special feature where the writers, artists, and actors talked about their thoughts behind the scenes. Everyone tried to claim "it was all my idea", they were most proud of the alternate animation segments, and someone thought the "wrecked topiary garden" joke was a highlight of comedy and artistic touch. I remember thinking they were all nuts for thinking the end result was any good.
I was unfortunately one of those millions of viewers for the first watch back in 2007 and I liked it(I was only 7). But now I can say that I hate the episode but honestly it might had been at least a high Meh or good if it wasn't for the songs and drawing out the episode. Great review as always, man! Keep it up!
Me too.
same, but I was 5
I was 8.
Vedant Akhauri 6 for me.
It’s nostalgic for me. So I give this episode an A Tier 89/100
I liked the creative twist you did with singing for the initial review. Personally I would have preferred if the whole review in the every s5 video was just singing and you started the next episode after "scumboooooooooob"
When you put David Bowie in a musical anything, and you don't have him sing at least one song, you know you done fucked up.
I was 11 when this aired and even then i remember trying to figure out why it was so heavily advertised when it was just a regular episode with random songs shoehorned in.
10:20 THEN CAME SPONGEBOB BIRTHDAY BLOWOUT
I don't think you're that bad at singing. The I think it's clear that it is a SCUMBOB part was really funny
I liked the way he said crotch!
It’s like the Nick exects thought “Hey wouldn’t it be great if SpongeBob and his friends went to Atlantis?”. And that’s where the thinking process stopped.
I remember sitting in my room doing math homework when this episode first premiered. Never before in my life was I grateful for having homework that night. Musicals in general (With the exception of Rock of Ages) aren't my Forte, especially surprise musicals like this one.
"I'm so glad they make TV movies anymore"
*One Birthday Blowout Later*
Finally. I've been waiting for you to talk about this episode again. Good rant, nonetheless. Totally worth the wait.
I honestly hated Waiting more than this episode
To me I see why since Waiting has almost no plot
I like how before the special even aired on Nickelodeon they did a marathon of episodes and starting from Z to A with SpongeBob The Movie. Also I believe this special is a call back to The Beatles: Yellow Submarine Movie, which explains why they change the art styles and why there are so many musical numbers.
About time this happened! This is well worth the wait!
Finally. I've been waiting so damn log for this.
At last! The long awaiting rant of Atlentis Squarepantis. Thanks, PIEGUYRULZ. We've been waiting for a long time for this.
Sandy is completely tone-deaf. That "watermelons with edible rinds" bit was so incredibly cringe that it was... inspiring. It makes you feel better about your singing voice and sense of rhythm.
At least in this episode...I don't know what changed since "Texas" and "Chimps Ahoy."
@@lightningmanectric3096 Come to think of it, she DID sound good in Texas (haven't seen Chimps Ahoy).
Also I’d like to point out that it’s already been established that Neptune is the leader of Atlantis, yet in this movie Lord Royal Highness is the leader of Atlantis. WHERE’S THE CONTINUITY????
This episode is kinda similar to Life of Brian where they pretty much screwed over their audiences with what they promised to be one of the best episodes ever, but were ultimately lied to by the creators.
I think Family Guy did that kind of shit a *whole lot worse* by comparison, not only because of the fact that act like they want to seriously change up the show as a whole, only to then revert that idea about two or three episodes later (which coincidentally involved one of the _better_ Season 12 episodes under a season that's absolutely worthy of being titled a ScumBob Season, even though it's a different type of show); but also because of the times they keep on bringing that shit up in later episodes like one episode where Stewie has a *_different time machine_* from the one he used to have before the Life of Brian aired and another episode where they mention they you probably didn't notice Brian appear at all in a particular episode and that you probably don't care about it. I mean, it's one thing you say you're going to do something different, only to change your mind about it some time later. However, it's absolutely something different altogether (almost malicious in terms of how they did it) when they not only do that kind of trap, but also mention it on purpose to piss off the various people who did see the Life of Brian and the aftermath it caused some time later! And considering that controversy they did with Double Dribble, I wouldn't be surprised one bit if someone involved with Fox or Family Guy's staff was indeed being malicious on the show now.
It was a typo ben.
"It's glad they don't make TV movies anymore" Hey arnold the jungle movie would like to speak to you
Why? I was just talking about SpongeBob.
PIEGUYRULZ I know you were talking about Spongebob it's just when you said that they don't make TV movies anymore I thought you meant all TV movies and that's why a put that comment and also good review it was pretty accurate and one question will you review the next Nick TV movie one already released which its name was in the last comment
@@PIEGUYRULZ R.I.P David Bowie I don't why They wasted having Him as The King of Atlantis since He never Sings
@@PIEGUYRULZ It seems like That The Conductors made Everyone Sing Badly on Purpose just to be Annoying this Episode is ok but it could be so much better if like A really bad Ripoff of Walt Disney's Atlantis The Lost Empire sort of
Oh c'mon Pieguy, your 'Atlantis Squarepantis' song isn't that bad. In fact, I think its funny and unique. but i'm glad you talked more in depth about it.
I actually watched your seasonal review a couple days ago, and was disappointed when you hadn't uploaded a Spongey Bits on Atlantis Squarepantis yet.
But low and behold! A meager few days later, here it is!
Awesome! I'm glad you finally ranted on this TV movie! And it was very well done! :)
Been waiting YEARS for this one... Also, I didn't think your singing was THAT bad... Certainly better than the songs in the episode! (and I would know, because I actually reviewed this MYSELF a while back...)
Where is the source that this was originally intended to be 11 minutes long? I'm not doubting you, but I've never found a source that said that.
They tried at least i will give it that. I would rather watch This TV movie instead of an episode of Teen Titans Go!, Breadwinners, Sanjay and Craig and Pickle And Peanut.
At least S&C and Breadwinners won't be airing any longer.
Also, I'd rather watch this than Coconut Fred.
sanjay and craig recently had new episodes
I actually don't mind Sanjay and Craig; love the idea of Tufflips' character: a washed up has-been '80s action star stereotype bumming around a small town having little adventures... There's enough there that it could have been its own show.
sandiman21
not that bad
Just because something isn't bad that doesn't mean it's good.
Atlantis squarepantis is the WORST EPISODE OF spongebob
Great Review, All of the Songs in this Episode (Especially Fueling The Bus, Sandy's Song and Goodbye Atlantis), *REALLY* Made My Ears Bleed! The Only Songs I Like are Plankton's Song (Decent Song) and The Bubble Song (That Song was Beautiful)
Can you do another video about Sponge Out of Water - like pointing out the references or an in depth review 😋
He said he'd review it in depth once he gets up into season 9 of the Sponge-bob review series.
I would like to see pieguyrulz do a re review of sponge out of water. he needs to know how crappy it is.
+OLOT Productions That's 2 years away!! 😓
+Caleb Boggess Crappy? I highly doubt he'll view it like that.
No, it's half a year for EEOSB8, then EEOSB9 is December 2017, so it's a year and a half.
What I've noticed about specials like this where they forcibly shove all of the main characters together is that none of them have any chemistry. They don't play off each other or provide any comedic foils with their distinct personalities. They're just all there and they exist in a vacuum. It's especially weird with Sandy, who almost never gets any extended interaction with any of the characters besides SpongeBob and Patrick, and even then, it's not like she and Patrick have anything in common besides being a mutual friend of SpongeBob.
Maybe this episode would have been less boring if the characters had actual chemistry, but they don't. They're just pushed together for a contrived plot and the writers never do anything with it.
PIEGUY, what is your worst and best Spongebob episode of all time?
Worst is Choir Boys, best is...I need to re-watch the seasons 1-3 videos.
"Pet Sitter Pat" would be much more convenient for the title of the worst episode of all time
Pieguy hasn't seen Pet Sitter Pat.
The only season 8 episodes he;s seen are Demolition Doofus, It's a SpongeBob Christmas, and Face Freeze.
Still don't agree with Pet Sitter Pat as the absolute worst.
Best is probably Chocolate With Nuts.
Still a better song writer and singer than most of the people on the charts, never mind everything from this episode.
I used to love Atlantis Squarepantis, but now uhh meh.
That blue king thing is all I think of
Same here that’s all I can think about when someone mentions SpongeBob Atlantis
Question
At the bottom five you had the heading instead of the "amulet"
Why? I just don't get it
I genuinely like the song you made. Anyways good review.
Finally! You stayed true to your word!
How I would have written it
Spongebob and Patrick wanna blow a long lasting bubble. The big bubble lands them in Atlantis. King Neptune is there and teaches them about the oldest living bubble...which still gets popped.
Or, Neptune shows them how to make Atlantean bubbles.
Aaaand...that's it.
But....but Pieguy....your singing voice is great! ;v; The review is really accurate tho. ^^
My Atlantis Squarepantis Song
"Starting out with the slowest song in history,"
"It's not funny and the plot is bare,"
"It deserves a SCUMBOB instantly,"
"Why am I singing about this awful musically?"
(SCUMBOB), (Meh), or (Good) Song?
Scumbob. You committed the cardinal sin of using an adverb in place of a noun, and nothing rhymes with "bare."
@@randomthings7997 omg a year old song i made that i forgot about
ScumBob song because I love this episode
The only part I found interesting was the video game part since it actually looks pretty good. Key word being LOOKS
Hey, I liked the song!
I wouldent trust sombody who thinks there was just one song
Honestly as soon as the first song played in the TV Movie I knew this "special" was gonna be bad! Honestly you can make a drinking game out of how many songs there are in "Atlantis Squarpantis". Hell even the Patchy segments have a song!
Yeah, this is pretty much the show's worst material. Good thing the writers stopped.
Oh, hi Ray!
This isn't related to spongebob, but I was curious when you were gonna review Seddie or Victorious episodes? Just wondering lol
as I got older I realized how effortlessly the songs are bad and patchy segments not fitting in
I’m very surprised that pie guy barely mentioned about David Bowies appearance in the episode
When I first watched it as a kid:
Me: Alright! Here we go! This episode is going to be so awesome! 😁😁😁
*episode starts*
Me: *laughing at Spongebob and Patrick's antics*
*Spongebob suddenly starts singing the opening song*
Me: Wait...Why is he singing? 😳
That song that you sang was actually very funny. You didn't sing that well, but the lyrics are funny. I think the bubble song is one of the better ones of this TV movie, but there are better SpongeBob songs. And it's ironic that David Bowie, who is a musician and a singer himself, doesn't sing any songs, despite each of the other main characters having their own song.
I don’t know if you’ve heard of the SpongeBob Broadway Musical, I gotta say that just the opening song of the show beats the entirety of Atlantis Squarepantis.
It's like the writers have a problem when it comes to writing the specials most of the time.
just watched this episode 2-3 times. i need to rewatch this to prove ur review.
I feel like if spongebob and Steven Universe were owned by shniter(I can't spell don't judge me)'s bakery then this would be on bottom of the bakery and "Mr greg" would be on the bizzaro bakery (Cause I think " Mr greg " is this one done right)
yeah
the place that gave us shows like "icarly" "drake and josh" and "sam and cat"
I personally like this episode am I the only one
No
I enjoy watching the episide itself
I LOVE THE EPISODE
Not at all
I love this episode too
I just noticed this episode is a Willy Wonka RIPP OFFFFF like so much
In willy wonka they get taken to a room about a theme they love
In this episode SUPRISE SUPRISE they get taken to a room based off a thing they love
AND THERE BOTH A MUSICAL but Willy Wonkas songs are GOOD but the spongebob ones ARE TERRIBLE
This is my least favourite episode in the entire series and I have watched the first 11 seasons. This is not my least favourite season of SpongeBob but it is my least favourite episode. It is so bad, I replaced slide whistle stooges with it as my number one least favourite episode of SpongeBob SquarePants
Wait this special is 44 minutes?!
I don,t even remember it being so long
Can you do a rant on Good Neighbors or the cephlapod lodge which both are squidward torture porns
He's already made a Good Neighbors rant:
watch?v=6kyDp_ma43I
Will you ever do a season 8 review? I am not begging you to do it, I am just wondering.
Are you kidding me? Your song was freaking awesome and hilarious
Yeah! I think you should be the new David Bowie! 😳 Did I really say that? That was so weird!
Actually, I think you're a decent singer. Sure, you're nothing special, but at least that's better than singing horribly like the episode did.
Or any modern singers
Ok, I'll confess...I thought your singing needed work. But kudos to you for going back and remembering you needed to look at it again. BTW, are you ever doing another livestream?
Is the next Bottom of the Bakery going to be boring as well? Because the latest videos of you reviewing are episodes that are boring.
The only good thing with this is that we had the last original soundtrack by THQ for an home console Spongebob Videogame and it was neat.
PIEGUY. What is your opinion on the news that season 11 will have half-hour long episodes instead of two 11 minute episodes in a segment.
They can barely fill up 11 minutes and they want to do 22?
That can't end well
really? holy shit, is this the end of spongebob?
+The Galling Ice pretty sure Hillenburg is going to be there.
Are you kidding me?
Donut Man It's going to be good! Look who much spongebob has improved in season 10!
This episode would be much better if it wasn't a musical and David Bowie was the only person who sang
This special was honestly worse than Truth or Square. Truth or Square at least had somewhat of a plot (even though it was pointless), and it at least had a decent song (all of the Atlantis Squarepantis songs were cliche and boring). While Patchy stayed for too long in Truth or Square with the celebrity cameos being pointless, there were at least a couple of funny jokes in it
Truth or Square: 2-3/10 (it's still really bad)
Atlantis Squarepantis: 1/10
No, no, I remembered how dull this episode was.
I expected the Patchy segments to just be him stuck in traffic too, but nope...
Hey PieGuy, what did you think of the trailer for the Legends of the Hidden Temple revival?
I think that the episode’s biggest sin was it being a musical and not having the late David Bowie sing. I mean talk about wasted potential.
I love your videos
This is awsome u should make a the main drain or the monster came to the binki bottom
I feel like the real reason Atlantis Squarepantis failed so miserably is because the episode doesn't know what direction it wanted to go. I thought I'd try to give my idea of a rewritten episode:
- First of all, reduce the runtime to about 22 minutes instead of 40. You can really tell how forcefully drawn out it is because of that run time. Second, I feel the plot itself needs a complete overhaul. Instead of being a journey in Atlantis through a Willy Wonka equivalent, it should be more reflective of a "lost city" archetype.
- The parts of Krabs, Sandy, Plankton and Squidward having their own individual song number in their respective rooms could be mashed into one song number of how great the city of Atlantis is, showing how much of a shame it is that the city is lost. Along with this, it would work well with the original first song about bubbles popping and how things don't last forever. I feel the theme of things not lasting forever could have been expanded on much more, but the original episode doesn't try to do that but rather shoehorn in songs to pad out time.
- Additionally on that, this would have been a perfect opportunity to give the David Bowie character his own song, lamenting on how the city was originally a sprawling metropolis, but has now fallen into the shadows, separated from the rest of the ocean. I feel less of the episode focuses on the city itself, but rather how each character relates to the city, especially in the song they sing while travelling to Atlantis. I feel these moments would give more of an opportunity to expand on the lore of Atlantis and make it more interesting.
- Should the episode still be a musical? I think it can work, if the songs are shorter. Plankton's song in the original episode is my favorite by a long shot, not just because of Doug Lawrence's performance, but because it's only about a minute long. The other songs I feel drag on way too long. If we do keep the original run time of 40 minutes, I can see more songs being used, but I would think that for 22 minutes (not counting Patchy's segments, which really could be removed entirely) there shouldn't be more than 5 songs.
It's crazy how much this episode needs fixed to be good, which shows how bad the original one is.
I was a kid when I watched this. I didn't want to admit my disappointment.
I don't mind your singing. In fact, it's actually really good, in my opinion.
I got a notification for this video 6 minutes into it
PIEGUYRULZ do Truth or Square rant, but only on the SpongeBob stuff.
If you finish the season 8 review early, will you post it early?
you are an amazing singer!!
SpongeBob Toy series and Real Life is getting the feels of Seasons 1-3.
Out of all of the songs in the episode, which would everyone consider the worst? Just wondering. I'd say it was spongebob's at the beginning.
My older brother said his favorite spongebob episode was Atlantis squarepantis but mine is mimic madness
