hi homies! i just want to mention that in the video i referred to different filipino languages as “dialects”. that was actually a mistake on my end. there are about 170 different languages spoken in the philippines (cebuano, ilocano, kapampangan, chavacano, tagalog, etc.) my apologies!!

In the Philippines different languages are actually referred to as dialects, even though they are distinctly different languages, albeit in the same language family. For some reason they don't use dialects as the standard linguistic term. Example: British English, American English, Australian English. I think they view it as accents.
Yes they are not dialects but actual languages. With Spanish and English, they are called variations as both have variations British English, American etc. Peninsular Spanish, Mexican Spanish, Chilean Spanish etc. In the case of Filipino languages, its mutual intelligibillity is very low when two speakers speak with each other for example Ilonggo to Tagalog, some words can be understood but majority are not the same. Their structures are totally different. So Ilonggo is not a variation or a dialect but a language different to Tagalog. This is the same for all other Philippine languages. One could probably use the term dialects or variations for some like Batangas Tagalog, Bulacan Tagalog etc. Personally I think the Modern Tagalog has lots of Spanish and English words, it is not Spanish lik some Filipinos would say but it only “has Spanish words’ and Taglish is a variation with many contrasts depending on how much English is added into it.
This is kinda sad, but I wanna learn Tagalog for my Lola and Lolo before they pass away. They are immigrants from the Philippines, but my dad never taught my siblings and I how to speak Tagalog. I can only understand a bit at the moment. I hope to learn at least a small bit of the language to make my Lola and Lolo proud…
i was born and raised in Italy and i've been speaking italian for my whole life. My parents speak caraya which is a dialect in some provinces in Iloilo. I've never truly learned the dialect or tagalog either but i can understand them since they're speaking it everyday. Thanks to tagalog movies finally i got to learn to understand tagalog too and now i started speaking it a little bit and my cousin in the philippines almost cried by hearing me speaking our language ahahah now i'm trying to speak more so when i come back to the philippines, i'm gonna be able to speak tagalog or caraya with my family
Please don't learn Tagalog in order to make your lolo or Lola proud. Learn it because you want to speak it and communicate with people. If you do t to make someone proud you are a people pleaser, sorry..not to be rude, but it's not healthy.
Who else isn't Filipino but just loves the language and wants to learn it? I started about 5 yrs ago and was pretty good but I lost track of my Tagalog friends and now I only remember about 5 sentences 😭 It's still hard for one who isn't immersed in the language
We are in the digital age, the golden age where just about anything can be learned as long as there’s a smart phone or pc. Enjoy learning it, have persistence, patience and consistency, it will keep improving. Tuloy lang, mag-iimprove din yan!

I relate to this. I'm half filipina (and half white) and I live in North America so I'm practically whitewashed. Even though my mom speaks Tagalog, she's the only person who I can directly communicate with in Tagalog because nobody else in my family can speak Tagalog fluently and I don't have any Filipino friends. The last time I went to the Philippines, I felt like I didn't fit in AT ALL because I didn't really know the language well and so I figured I should embrace my Filipino heritage and learn Tagalog! I can't wait until I go back to the Philippines and am actually able to speak comfortably with my cousins. Anyways, great video! Your editing and video making skills are top notch!
At least your Filipina mom will speak to you in Tagalog. My mom response in English. And when I ask her how to say something in Tagalog she will say "Oh, I don't remember." I'm half black but my mom is very white washed. She told us we had Spanish European DNA and the DNA results came back 46% Filipino and 4% Chinese. But I am glad that you are embracing your Pinay roots. Where I am from, majority of the mix kids are very disconnected to their Pinoy heritage.
Same with me unfortunately my dad didn't let her teach me and my brother Tagalog when we were younger (I still hold it against him!😂) And I used to get my mum to talk to me in Bisaya and Tagalog but sadly she passed away so I'm reliant on learning on my own
Ako have Hindi Filipino blood in me. Ako started studying Tagalog to better understand aking mamahal culture at friends/family. We've since broken up. But Ako ay still very interested in the culture and language po. So Ako will remain an estudyante of Tagalog.

I understand why, lol. We don't speak like that in a casual day-to-day conversation. I'm guessing you learned that from a "learn filipino" lesson somewhere? The closest you can get with how that relates to English (at least in my own interpretation) is something like this: "It is of my great honor and pleasure to meet a person like you". That's why someone commented here that you sounded like you're from the 1860s, lol. Instead, a simple "nice to meet you" (or add 'po' - "nice to meet you po" - which shows respect) is enough and what you'll commonly hear when people meet for the first time. Everyone uses that expression.
I'm not Filipino but my adopted family is Filipino (my step-dad likes to jokingly call me an Albino Filipino). I hope to learn Tagalog to talk with my family, Filipino diaspora and maybe travel to the Philippines.

I met a person from El Salvador and he said he speaks Tagalog. How it happened was he works with Filipinos eight hours a day, and his friends are Tagalog speakers outside of work. Three years later, he spoke it in return. Effectively, he was immersed in the language.
Bruh this makes me feel so much better. I’m black and Filipino, 2nd generation American. My Lola didn’t want to teach her kids or us Tagalog or iloko because we were American and “had to speak English only’. And straight up they used us to learn English. But now that I’m older, they’re always asking me why I don’t learn Tagalog while I’ve learned a decent amount of 4 other languages. And it’s just as you said, it’s daunting to learn the language your family speaks bc they’ll catch you slacking. 😭😭 but I always feel so…left out when I see ppl speaking tagalog to each other and I understand a few words but…I can’t speak it. I work at a warehouse rn and there’s the Spanish speakers and the Tagalog speakers and they just sit talking to each other and I’m just like “…I wanna talk with the cool kids”. Lesson? Pls just teach your kids your mother tongue. 😭😭

Ok, I'm not Filipino, I'm Brazilian, but I started liking romance novels when I was 18, unfortunaly I could only find content in English and at the time my English was very bad. But recently I started liking SB19 (my reaction when you use them as reference was like "No way, how he knows?!" lol) but because of them I've looking for another artists and I discovered, OMG, what an amazing language the pop and I want to learn and now I can. I am filipino-american , and I was always fun of for not being "real Asian" because Chinese or japanese. And for having a white dad. So I never learned Tagalog, now that I'm older I'm so excited to be true to my culture!
Not being Chinese is not a bad thing. I'm Chinese-Filipino. People like to come up to me and ask "are you Chinese, Japanese, or Korean?" I say, "well... yes." Then they say, "I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT." It's ironic because when I meet Chinese people, they always ask because I don't look too Chinese, but look similar to Chinese. On the otherhand, Filipinos often don't realize that I am Filipino because of my lighter complexion and facial features.

THIS is THE video I have needed for a very long time. 3+ years ago, I moved to the Western Visayas after living in the US for 15 years. When I began school here in June 2019, I was very shocked at how different the culture was, especially hearing everyone around me speak languages I could not understand. I didn't grow up learning Tagalog or Hiligaynon so I definitely felt "out of place". I have had special classes but none of them have helped me speak at an intermediate level, and although my teachers say I have the potential to be fluent, I just have not been able to get myself to that point. Your video has really helped me get myself together. I have continuously felt misguided and confused in my Tagalog journey. For a long time, I've been trying to figure out on my own how I can actually launch myself to great heights. The amount of approaches and strategies you talk about are simple yet mind-blowing. I should try watching more Filipino UA-camrs/TV shows, huh? And I can absolutely relate with you on the many struggles, which I feel my classmates/teachers cannot truly understand. I'm not Filipino, but I have family in Laguna Philippines that are teaching me every day. I started out learning their alphabet, which isn't much different than ours. I learned how to properly pronounce the 5 vowels and the two diphthongs. I'm learning a lot on my own, and then later they call, and I go over everything with them. They have been a big help in making sure I'm saying the words properly, and they text me words and phrases to learn. If you want to learn any language, it really helps to know someone who speaks it and, of course, stick to it. Don't get discouraged and give up. There are a lot of Filipinos at my job that don't know I've been learning their language, especially the older women who always talk to me in English. I'll often stock the shelves in the same aisle as them listening to what they are saying, and they have no idea I can understand them, lol, yet anyways but they will once I tell them. I'm not fluent yet, but I'll get there. I'm practicing every single day. I'm also listening to Tagalog music like Shanti, and I'm watching Tagalog shows and movies.

let me tell you, THIS SPOKE TO ME (literally TT)! Especially the part when you said its never too late to learn even if you're 18...that describe to a T. I grew up not understanding let alone speaking it, so sharing your story was really motivating for me. Although I have a long way to go, I want to take learning tagalog and hopefully another dialect in the near future, so when or if I get to that level I will come back to this comment and give an update lmao.
Hey, this video really inspired and motivated me alot with trying to learn tagalog. I am full-blooded filipino but for some reason I have never actually picked up the language as a kid. I always promised myself that I will start speaking tagalog today but today turned into tomorrow and then tomorrow slowly becomes to never. Im at the age where I cant always rely on my relatives to speak for me and I feel extremely socially lonely because of my lack of tagalog speaking skills, so thank you for making me realize im not alone and that I can do it. ❤❤❤
This is really motivating, because i can clearly see myself in you, im pretty grateful i have filipino friends that do speak tagalog sometimes, some of them also struggle speaking fluently, but after a while of hanging out with them, i feel a bit comfortable speaking tagalog to them, even though its broken tagalog they dont judge me because we're all in the same situation, except my close friend who is pretty fluent

my mom and her family moved to america from the philippines when she was 13. she has since forgotten all of her tagalog. we have a decades-old CD of rosetta stone for tagalog that she was using for a while to try to teach it to herself again, but she never really got anywhere. needless to say, i grew up not knowing tagalog at all, the only time i would hear it is when i went to visit my lolo and lola each year several states away. i feel so disconnected from my heritage and i really want to learn the language. also, my lola has stage 4 cancer and we won't see her much longer. i really want to be able to have a conversation with one of her descendants in tagalog before she passes. i pray that my background in spanish (my other grandma is from mexico) can help me somewhat - i don't have anyone to practice with so it might be difficult. thanks for the awesome video and encouragement. sorry my username is weird lol
Maraming salamat para sa video (????) of all the languages that I've studied, pinakahirap ang Tagalog pero it's the most important. I've been so disconnected with my Filipino culture and it wasn't until I started studying tagalog that I began to feel proud of my Filipino heritage

Not being able to speak Tagalog doesn't make you any less of a Filipino BUT it is good for you to embrace your roots and culture. Honestly, there are some homegrown Filipinos who don't know how speak tagalog or not fluent in it like some probinsyanos and ethnic groups. And guess what? They are and will always be Filipinos. I agree but it’s rewarding to witness the awe that you get when you try to speak somebody else’s native tongue. More often than not, you gain intant rapport and elicits good reaction on the the person you’re speaking to. Try speaking French in Paris, Spanish in Madrid, or Mandarin in Beijing for example, see how you’re received by the locals versus just speaking English to them. When you speak English to a Filipino who’s from the Philippines originally, you’ll get understood and he can communicate with you, but it really hits differently when you try to speak to him in Filipino.
Not filipino but I am Mexican and have the same relation with Spanish. I'm learning Tagalog because mi novio speaks tagalog and I wanna impress him and in the future his family. Also because I don't wanna be the stinky foreigner that only speaks english and spanish (I'm relearning spanish and more and more fluent now). Hopefully my tagalog journey will go well, so far my accent with ng/nga has been messing up..

i recently went to the philippines for the first time in a while since i couldn’t go last time because of covid, and i feel like i’ve learn a lot there. my parents didn’t really encourage me to speak tagalog and we can’t go to the philippines often since it’s expensive, so unfortunately the next time i’ll be going i’ll nearly be an adult! i was way too scared too speak tagalog when i went since it’s not the best even though though i could say a few phrases if i wanted to, but i really want to be be fluent next time i go because i want to be able to talk with my relatives and cousins connect with them even if there is a slight language barrier. thank you for all the tips!
You are right about being conscious of your reasons to want to learn a language which will be your motivation, driving force to keep at it. For my part I learned a completely foreign language for my children. To enable me to accompany them in that environment (mitigate if not prevent bullying and eventually surpass it and not be broken). Language is a tool, a weapon, a gadget. To take advantage of its potentials one must have a command of it. You want to be empowered (express your emotions, ideas, etc and figure out those of others)? Learn the language seriously through all your actions everyday no time limit. Good luck to anyone deciding to undertake this learning endeavor.

I lost the ability to speak tagalog growing up in Canada, but I could always understand it. When I turned 18, I went back to Philippines and decided I would try to only speak tagalog. It was surprisingly easy to learn. I was already fluent after like 2 months. It turns out if you can already understand the language, it's actually really easy to learn how to speak it. I find most people just feel embarrassed to try so they never bother.
Im half English and half pina my mum never taught me Tagalog so in these cult like gatherings (all my mums Filipina friends meet up) I don’t have a clue what they r saying and i already feel left out bc me and my sister r visibly not full Filipina’s and not know the language on top of that makes me feel so left out and I’m going to the Philippines next year with my mum and sister I haven’t been in ages Ik they will speak English to me but I wanna know the language too bc when my mum’s around other Filipino’s she goes Tagalog mode and then I’m lost (I also wanna be able to slag ppl off in a different language)

Im half Filipina, my mum was born in the Philippines and she met my dad when she migrated to England. So when they had me i obviously learned English, since i was born there. And ever since ive only lernt body parts, opo/hindi, salamat, mahal kita/mahal din kita, and numbers 1-20. I only used those while growing up. But, as i grew up, i relized that, my family in the Philippines all knew to speak tagalog, and i never understood them in any way. I allways stuck out whenever i went to Philippines, not only did i not know how ro speak tagalog i also was a full on highlighter. thankfully my siblings all learnt English to speak to our dads side of the family. I never really talked to some of my cousins, since they didnt know how to speak English, so they distanced themselves from me, it made me sad since when we were kids i allways talked and hung out with them. But now im actually trying to make the effort to speak Tagalog, so thank you so much for the tips!

i’m learning ilonggo (hiligaynon) AND tagalog, preparing for my trip to the philippines and it’s hard not to mix up words from both languages :’)) i would say my hiligaynon is better than my tagalog but i’m trying to learn useful phrases and vocab day by day !

despite being born in the Philippines.. because I was so overly exposed to foreign (American/British) media I somehow grew up with those as my primary language instead of tagalog 😭
my friend doesn’t really understand the struggle, cause she grew up in a 95% Filipino area, and knows her family in the phillipines. My mom moved here when she was 4 with 2 of her 12 siblings, and grew up around Filipinos but doesn’t really know anything and doesn’t act like she wants to learn either, so I can’t ask her. I don’t know my family in the Philippines either, and since iver never known my dad I can’t ask him about it, and my stepdad is white and doesn’t know a lot. I try my best to try and find where to learn it so I can at least have that first step to learning that stuff, because (I’m sure y’all have this too) every time I get stopped(in the most random places)and asked if I’m filipino, sometimes I get really depressy and don’t really know if I should say yes or not, because I really want to avoid the awkward conversation afterward where they say something in Tagalog and I just stare back at them and then they walk away :’) but I don’t have anywhere to proof-check these things or know if it’s accurate or if it’s actually something used, and I live in a really white town in texas so there’s no hope for me asking someone around me, and I don’t wanna talk to my friends parents about it. they’re so nice but A. I eat enough food at home I really don’t wanna ask them about it and have her mom stuff me with food😭 and B. I don’t wanna go and like ask my friends mom about it cause that’s not the reason I go to her house all the time and I don’t want her to think that :’) so thank you this helped :)
I feel kinda bad for our bunso because she grew up in Singapore and we spoke English to her most of the time as she grew up and we didn't really teach her how to speak Tagalog. So sometimes I would see her spacing out everytime we speak Tagalog at the dinner table.

I would like to share a tip that really helped my learn Tagalog make small flashcards and put them EVERYWHERE, doors, fridge, sink, table, counter, t.v, EVERYWHERE. Whenever you see one/come across it, say the Tagalog word. ex: you put on on your bedroom door, with the phrase "thank you" on it, then before opening the door say the Tagalog word for thank you, if you can't remember flip it over. Once you've learned the word then put another flashcard on there. This helped me a lot, it may not work for everyone, but I highly recommend it!
My 4 year old son is also name Ethan and I am slowly teaching him Tagalog. My husband moved to US when he was 8 and the his teacher told my MIL to only speak English or he won’t move up. hi homies! i just want to mention that in the video i referred to different filipino languages as “dialects”. that was actually a mistake on my end. there are about 170 different languages spoken in the philippines (cebuano, ilocano, kapampangan, chavacano, tagalog, etc.) my apologies!!

In the Philippines different languages are actually referred to as dialects, even though they are distinctly different languages, albeit in the same language family.
For some reason they don't use dialects as the standard linguistic term. Example: British English, American English, Australian English.
I think they view it as accents.

Yes they are not dialects but actual languages. With Spanish and English, they are called variations as both have variations British English, American etc. Peninsular Spanish, Mexican Spanish, Chilean Spanish etc. In the case of Filipino languages, its mutual intelligibillity is very low when two speakers speak with each other for example Ilonggo to Tagalog, some words can be understood but majority are not the same. Their structures are totally different. So Ilonggo is not a variation or a dialect but a language different to Tagalog. This is the same for all other Philippine languages. One could probably use the term dialects or variations for some like Batangas Tagalog, Bulacan Tagalog etc. Personally I think the Modern Tagalog has lots of Spanish and English words, it is not Spanish lik some Filipinos would say but it only “has Spanish words’ and Taglish is a variation with many contrasts depending on how much English is added into it.
This is kinda sad, but I wanna learn Tagalog for my Lola and Lolo before they pass away. They are immigrants from the Philippines, but my dad never taught my siblings and I how to speak Tagalog. I can only understand a bit at the moment. I hope to learn at least a small bit of the language to make my Lola and Lolo proud…
i was born and raised in Italy and i've been speaking italian for my whole life. My parents speak caraya which is a dialect in some provinces in Iloilo. I've never truly learned the dialect or tagalog either but i can understand them since they're speaking it everyday. Thanks to tagalog movies finally i got to learn to understand tagalog too and now i started speaking it a little bit and my cousin in the philippines almost cried by hearing me speaking our language ahahah

Please don't learn Tagalog in order to make your lolo or Lola proud. Learn it because you want to speak it and communicate with people. If you do t to make someone proud you are a people pleaser, sorry..not to be rude, but it's not healthy.

I relate to this. I'm half filipina (and half white) and I live in North America so I'm practically whitewashed. Even though my mom speaks Tagalog, she's the only person who I can directly communicate with in Tagalog because nobody else in my family can speak Tagalog fluently and I don't have any Filipino friends. The last time I went to the Philippines, I felt like I didn't fit in AT ALL because I didn't really know the language well and so I figured I should embrace my Filipino heritage and learn Tagalog! I can't wait until I go back to the Philippines and am actually able to speak comfortably with my cousins. Anyways, great video! Your editing and video making skills are top notch!

At least your Filipina mom will speak to you in Tagalog. My mom response in English. And when I ask her how to say something in Tagalog she will say "Oh, I don't remember." I'm half black but my mom is very white washed. She told us we had Spanish European DNA and the DNA results came back 46% Filipino and 4% Chinese. But I am glad that you are embracing your Pinay roots. Where I am from, majority of the mix kids are very disconnected to their Pinoy heritage.

Ako have Hindi Filipino blood in me. Ako started studying Tagalog to better understand aking mamahal culture at friends/family. We've since broken up. But Ako ay still very interested in the culture and language po. So Ako will remain an estudyante of Tagalog.

The closest you can get with how that relates to English (at least in my own interpretation) is something like this:
"It is of my great honor and pleasure to meet a person like you".
That's why someone commented here that you sounded like you're from the 1860s, lol.
Instead, a simple "nice to meet you" (or add 'po' - "nice to meet you po" - which shows respect) is enough and what you'll commonly hear when people meet for the first time. Everyone uses that expression.

I met a person from El Salvador and he said he speaks Tagalog. How it happened was he works with Filipinos eight hours a day, and his friends are Tagalog speakers outside of work. Three years later, he spoke it in return. Effectively, he was immersed in the language.

My Lola didn’t want to teach her kids or us Tagalog or iloko because we were American and “had to speak English only’. And straight up they used us to learn English. But now that I’m older, they’re always asking me why I don’t learn Tagalog while I’ve learned a decent amount of 4 other languages. And it’s just as you said, it’s daunting to learn the language your family speaks bc they’ll catch you slacking. 😭😭 but I always feel so…left out when I see ppl speaking tagalog to each other and I understand a few words but…I can’t speak it. I work at a warehouse rn and there’s the Spanish speakers and the Tagalog speakers and they just sit talking to each other and I’m just like “…I wanna talk with the cool kids”. Lesson? Ok, I'm not Filipino, I'm Brazilian, but I started liking romance novels when I was 18, unfortunaly I could only find content in English and at the time my English was very bad. But recently I started liking SB19 (my reaction when you use them as reference was like "No way, how he knows?!" lol) but because of them I've looking for another artists and I discovered, OMG, what an amazing language the pop and I want to learn and now I can. I am filipino-american , and I was always fun of for not being "real Asian" because Chinese or japanese. And for having a white dad. So I never learned Tagalog, now that I'm older I'm so excited to be true to my culture!
Not being Chinese is not a bad thing. I'm Chinese-Filipino. People like to come up to me and ask "are you Chinese, Japanese, or Korean?" I say, "well... yes." Then they say, "I KNEW IT, I KNEW IT." It's ironic because when I meet Chinese people, they always ask because I don't look too Chinese, but look similar to Chinese. On the otherhand, Filipinos often don't realize that I am Filipino because of my lighter complexion and facial features.

THIS is THE video I have needed for a very long time. 3+ years ago, I moved to the Western Visayas after living in the US for 15 years. When I began school here in June 2019, I was very shocked at how different the culture was, especially hearing everyone around me speak languages I could not understand. I didn't grow up learning Tagalog or Hiligaynon so I definitely felt "out of place". I have had special classes but none of them have helped me speak at an intermediate level, and although my teachers say I have the potential to be fluent, I just have not been able to get myself to that point.
Your video has really helped me get myself together. I have continuously felt misguided and confused in my Tagalog journey. For a long time, I've been trying to figure out on my own how I can actually launch myself to great heights. The amount of approaches and strategies you talk about are simple yet mind-blowing. I should try watching more Filipino UA-camrs/TV shows, huh? And I can absolutely relate with you on the many struggles, which I feel my classmates/teachers cannot truly understand.

I'm not Filipino, but I have family in Laguna Philippines that are teaching me every day. I started out learning their alphabet, which isn't much different than ours. I learned how to properly pronounce the 5 vowels and the two diphthongs. I'm learning a lot on my own, and then later they call, and I go over everything with them. They have been a big help in making sure I'm saying the words properly, and they text me words and phrases to learn. If you want to learn any language, it really helps to know someone who speaks it and, of course, stick to it. Don't get discouraged and give up. There are a lot of Filipinos at my job that don't know I've been learning their language, especially the older women who always talk to me in English. I'll often stock the shelves in the same aisle as them listening to what they are saying, and they have no idea I can understand them, lol, yet anyways but they will once I tell them. I'm not fluent yet, but I'll get there. I'm practicing every single day. I'm also listening to Tagalog music like Shanti, and I'm watching Tagalog shows and movies.

I grew up not understanding let alone speaking it, so sharing your story was really motivating for me. Hey, this video really inspired and motivated me alot with trying to learn tagalog. I am full-blooded filipino but for some reason I have never actually picked up the language as a kid. I always promised myself that I will start speaking tagalog today but today turned into tomorrow and then tomorrow slowly becomes to never. Im at the age where I cant always rely on my relatives to speak for me and I feel extremely socially lonely because of my lack of tagalog speaking skills, so thank you for making me realize im not alone and that I can do it.

my mom and her family moved to america from the philippines when she was 13. she has since forgotten all of her tagalog. we have a decades-old CD of rosetta stone for tagalog that she was using for a while to try to teach it to herself again, but she never really got anywhere. needless to say, i grew up not knowing tagalog at all, the only time i would hear it is when i went to visit my lolo and lola each year several states away. i feel so disconnected from my heritage and i really want to learn the language. also, my lola has stage 4 cancer and we won't see her much longer. i really want to be able to have a conversation with one of her descendants in tagalog before she passes. i pray that my background in spanish (my other grandma is from mexico) can help me somewhat - i don't have anyone to practice with so it might be difficult.

Not being able to speak Tagalog doesn't make you any less of a Filipino BUT it is good for you to embrace your roots and culture. Honestly, there are some homegrown Filipinos who don't know how speak tagalog or not fluent in it like some probinsyanos and ethnic groups. And guess what? They are and will always be Filipinos.

I agree but it’s rewarding to witness the awe that you get when you try to speak somebody else’s native tongue. More often than not, you gain intant rapport and elicits good reaction on the the person you’re speaking to. Try speaking French in Paris, Spanish in Madrid, or Mandarin in Beijing for example, see how you’re received by the locals versus just speaking English to them. When you speak English to a Filipino who’s from the Philippines originally, you’ll get understood and he can communicate with you, but it really hits differently when you try to speak to him in Filipino.

i recently went to the philippines for the first time in a while since i couldn’t go last time because of covid, and i feel like i’ve learn a lot there. my parents didn’t really encourage me to speak tagalog and we can’t go to the philippines often since it’s expensive, so unfortunately the next time i’ll be going i’ll nearly be an adult! i was way too scared too speak tagalog when i went since it’s not the best even though though i could say a few phrases if i wanted to, but i really want to be be fluent next time i go because i want to be able to talk with my relatives and cousins connect with them even if there is a slight language barrier. thank you for all the tips!
You are right about being conscious of your reasons to want to learn a language which will be your motivation, driving force to keep at it. For my part I learned a completely foreign language for my children. To enable me to accompany them in that environment (mitigate if not prevent bullying and eventually surpass it and not be broken). Language is a tool, a weapon, a gadget. To take advantage of its potentials one must have a command of it. You want to be empowered (express your emotions, ideas, etc and figure out those of others)? Learn the language seriously through all your actions everyday no time limit. Good luck to anyone deciding to undertake this learning endeavor.

I lost the ability to speak tagalog growing up in Canada, but I could always understand it. When I turned 18, I went back to Philippines and decided I would try to only speak tagalog. It was surprisingly easy to learn. I was already fluent after like 2 months. It turns out if you can already understand the language, it's actually really easy to learn how to speak it. I find most people just feel embarrassed to try so they never bother.

Being an American with no knowledge on anything but the English language this video and my Filipina fiancee give me some motivation to learn Tagalog. My future mother in law has been STRESSING for me to learn Tagalog lol, I ain't trying to get on her bad side. 😅

Im half Filipina, my mum was born in the Philippines and she met my dad when she migrated to England. So when they had me i obviously learned English, since i was born there. And ever since ive only lernt body parts, opo/hindi, salamat, mahal kita/mahal din kita, and numbers 1-20. I only used those while growing up. But, as i grew up, i relized that, my family in the Philippines all knew to speak tagalog, and i never understood them in any way. I allways stuck out whenever i went to Philippines, not only did i not know how ro speak tagalog i also was a full on highlighter. thankfully my siblings all learnt English to speak to our dads side of the family. I never really talked to some of my cousins, since they didnt know how to speak English, so they distanced themselves from me, it made me sad since when we were kids i allways talked and hung out with them. But now im actually trying to make the effort to speak Tagalog, so thank you so much for the tips!

i’m learning ilonggo (hiligaynon) AND tagalog, preparing for my trip to the philippines and it’s hard not to mix up words from both languages :’)) i would say my hiligaynon is better than my tagalog but i’m trying to learn useful phrases and vocab day by day !

my friend doesn’t really understand the struggle, cause she grew up in a 95% Filipino area, and knows her family in the phillipines. My mom moved here when she was 4 with 2 of her 12 siblings, and grew up around Filipinos but doesn’t really know anything and doesn’t act like she wants to learn either, so I can’t ask her. I don’t know my family in the Philippines either, and since iver never known my dad I can’t ask him about it, and my stepdad is white and doesn’t know a lot. I try my best to try and find where to learn it so I can at least have that first step to learning that stuff, because (I’m sure y’all have this too) every time I get stopped(in the most random places)and asked if I’m filipino, sometimes I get really depressy and don’t really know if I should say yes or not, because I really want to avoid the awkward conversation afterward where they say something in Tagalog and I just stare back at them and then they walk away :’) but I don’t have anywhere to proof-check these things or know if it’s accurate or if it’s actually something used, and I live in a really white town in texas so there’s no hope for me asking someone around me, and I don’t wanna talk to my friends parents about it. they’re so nice but A. I eat enough food at home I really don’t wanna ask them about it and have her mom stuff me with food😭 and B. I don’t wanna go and like ask my friends mom about it cause that’s not the reason I go to her house all the time and I don’t want her to think that :’) so thank you this helped :)

I feel kinda bad for our bunso because she grew up in Singapore and we spoke English to her most of the time as she grew up and we didn't really teach her how to speak Tagalog. So sometimes I would see her spacing out everytime we speak Tagalog at the dinner table.

I would like to share a tip that really helped my learn Tagalog
make small flashcards and put them EVERYWHERE, doors, fridge, sink, table, counter, t.v, EVERYWHERE. Whenever you see one/come across it, say the Tagalog word.
ex: you put on on your bedroom door, with the phrase "thank you" on it, then before opening the door say the Tagalog word for thank you, if you can't remember flip it over. Once you've learned the word then put another flashcard on there.
This helped me a lot, it may not work for everyone, but I highly recommend it!
My 4 year old son is also name Ethan and I am slowly teaching him Tagalog. My husband moved to US when he was 8 and the his teacher told my MIL to only speak English or he won’t move up. So now he’s 40 years old and been trying to learn since. It’s just so hard for me to switched back and forth 😅😢 now I really have to just speak Tagalog to my son.
