@@sirius5657 dude he said in the end that he got 9 years of experience getting involved in the Filipino stuff. Of course, it's not just about research, he may have learned it through those years along the way for sure.
Lol. The guy that actually spoke the language was deemed as trying too hard 😂. Speaking the language should have been basic. But because of our colonial mentality, most immigrant parents never placed any importance on their children learning the language. Heck, even in the Philippines, a lot of parents ignore our mother tongue so a lot of children are growing up not knowing how to speak Filipino.
You also have to understand that immigrant parents work multiple jobs and are barely home. Therefore, children learn to speak English more from school, etc., and can slowly forget how to speak Tagalog over time or barely learn it from their parents.
Colonial mentality yes but also its a classist thing. Don’t understand why so many people in the comments are saying that Filipino Americans are not real Filipino because they don’t speak the language when so many Filipinos that actually live in the country can’t speak a lick of tagalog or any dialect because their parents think that its “high class” that their kids are English speakers
@@kaye2357well it is "high class", or rather it will get them somewhere. They can work anywhere in the world, move to US, Europe, Japan or wherever. Tagalog isn't useful anywhere outside the Philippines
There's a strategic element to it. The mole in the ethnicity-based Odd One Out videos are very often somebody who studied the language intensely or some other circumstances that makes them. So it seems likely that the person flexing their language knowlege might the mole especially if it doesn't line up with their biography (in this case, the fact that he's never been to the Philippines makes it feel unexpected that he would be the best speaker). I'm surprised "John" didn't try to use the language thing more but it may have been that at first he was saving it for later if he needed to save himself from suspicion, but then after seeing what happened to the first guy, he realized that using too much Tagalog could seem forced and make them more suspicious. So my take is that there isn't really a deeper socialogical point regarding them voting him out, it's just the nature of the game making that an easy way to eliminate someone with a trait that correlates with being the mole.

No, I think it's just like what one woman said -- those who is the first to brag about speaking Tagalog could be the mole. It's nothing against being Filipino; it's just a strategy game and I too would think that the first person who speak the language could be the mole.
This is such a nice video on how Filipino kids in America have diverse experiences with their heritage! Just wanted to clear something up-- that Ilonggo/Hiligaynon and Bicolano are NOT dialects, but entirely different languages from the Philippines! :D Historically our colonial education system made it so that the 700+ other languages other than Tagalog are called and treated as dialects to create this lesser view on people from the provinces. All this time these languages have had unique words and grammar systems that are just not reconcilable with Filipino (the national language that supposedly borrowed words from major languages in the country) or Tagalog. It just goes to show the different cultural influences even within our own country. So yeah! Much love to y'all :>
In the Philippines, these people would just be considered Americans, from mannerism and the way they speak, people would notice they're not from there.
@@1412Bunny There's no ethnic Filipino either, Filipinos usually identify Ilocano, Bicolano, Tagalog, Maranao, Ifugao, Waray, Tsinoy, etc. as their ethnicity. But I guess since they're from outside the Philippines, they tend to lump things together.
This! I see a lot of filipino moms who vlog in japan teach english to their half kids instead of their native languages. I sense some sort of them being ashamed to introduce another half of their identity to their kids due to the Philippines being poor
not saying ur less filipino if you don’t know tagalog, bisaya, ilocano, etc. but knowing your native tongue is the highest form of connecting with your roots. Sure your parents could be held responsible, but if you really wanted to you would’ve learned or taken initiative (even if it may be broken, at least you’re putting in effort). It’s sad that fil-ams (and even some filipinos in the Philippines) don’t know how to speak Tagalog when language is one of the things that makes up one’s cultural identity.
Just a reminder that Hiligaynon (Ilonggo) is NOT A DIALECT but a whole nother language with its own linguistic characteristics that are unique even among other Filipino languages.

For 200+ years, philippines as a colony of spain meant that it was ruled from the viceroyalty of new spain (aka Mexico). so yea culturally we're more similar to mexicans than the spanish 😁
The big diff is that the majority of the citizens of Mexico speak Spanish. In the Philippines, many provinces struggle with Filipino, the national language. I’ve tried to explain that fact to many foreigners. And the likes of Waray, Hiligaynon and Chavacano, for example, are languages, _NOT_ dialects.
I'm surprised that the only one who is not Filipino know about the "dwende tabi tabi po" thing. Also, shout out to Rey for knowing the "My Way K*llings".
It's really not their fault fully, partially the parents fault that they don't teach them about their true culture and language and basically don't make effort in making them acknowledge the country but its partially their fault that they're fully grown and still have little knowledge about the Philippines when you can simply go online and learn about it

okay seeing the comments from this, the next “Middle Ground” should be American-born Filipinos vs Mainland Filipinos😲😲
Don’t understand why so many people in the comments are saying that Filipino Americans are not real Filipino because they don’t speak the language when so many Filipinos that actually live in the country can’t speak a lick of tagalog or any dialect because their parents think that its “high class” that their kids are English speakers
as someone who isnt even filipino i found that very sad

This is such a nice video on how Filipino kids in America have diverse experiences with their heritage! Just wanted to clear something up-- that Ilonggo/Hiligaynon and Bicolano are NOT dialects, but entirely different languages from the Philippines! :D
Historically our colonial education system made it so that the 700+ other languages other than Tagalog are called and treated as dialects to create this lesser view on people from the provinces. All this time these languages have had unique words and grammar systems that are just not reconcilable with Filipino (the national language that supposedly borrowed words from major languages in the country) or Tagalog. It just goes to show the different cultural influences even within our own country. So yeah! Much love to y'all :>

Like let's say uno, dos, tres is spanish
But in tagalog its Isa, dalawa, tatlo
And in English its one, two, three
Tagalog has its own meaning and translaion besides for some Spanish words being used sometimes
Also, there's only 1% of filipinos who have Spanish Blood and the only reason why they changed their last names to Spanish was when it was ruled by Spain and everyone was obliged to change their first and last names to Spanish and whoever had a non-Spanish name will be executed
