So-finds, you are the sweetest, cutest, funniest young mudlarker I’ve found to watch. Love your honesty, when you drink from your bottles, how you investigate and report their value to us and just the commaraderie you share with your friends. Love watching you create new things out of your old finds, out in your back yard...accompanied by chickens and stray cats! You keep feeding NELSON those tasty bits and he’ll be a regular...a stray no longer! We do what we can to take care of all God’s creatures eh? Enjoy watching you and Nic, you and Matt, you and Steve, you and Chill Bill, you and just about anybody!!
And just when I thought this channel couldn’t get any better, Si whips out a wood lathe and makes a gorgeous bowl out of a piece of old wood on the shore... And then adds shined up brass hand turned nails...I love it! Can’t say how much I look forward to the Sunday morning dose of history, creativity, and Simon’s all around good humor.
I certainly did hear that strange noise @Si-finds maybe it’s the dead loved one that had the coin in the first place, happy that it has been found and is going to be loved because of the history, and now he/she can rest in peace eternally xxx
Excellent finds on the river, and such a nice stray kitty! That wood looks a lot like red mahogany, and the brass nails are perfect with it. My Dad taught me how to use the lathe years ago. I loved woodturning!
Hi Si. Love your work. I'm from Western Australia and I can tell you 100% that that wood for the bowl is Jarrah, pronounced 'ja' as in jacket and 'ra' as in the Egyptian sun god. One of the hardest and most durable woods on the planet. It's a true hardwood. It has a myriad of uses; railway sleepers, furniture, power poles, flooring, wharf piles and interestingly was exported all over the world and used for roads and footpaths in Britain, particularly in London in the 19th century. Still used today.
Nelson is a handsome kitty! Your rescue hens are living the posh life in your garden! Lucky girls! Great seeing Cuffs! The ring he found was exceptional! How you see those tiny finds like the seed beads and tiny garnets is a miracle! Wow! Love your upcycle crafts! Especially the wood items ... the copper nails. Beautiful! Thanks again for sharing!
I live in Australia and I know that Jarrah wood smells sensational! Loved the bowl and the added screws makes it look ancient. By the way, Nelson is so adorable!!!
Thank you again Simon for another great video. Thank you too for caring for Nelson. The world needs more people with a heart like yours. Your bowl is amazing and another wonderful piece of art. Looking forward to your next video. Have a great week and keep safe.
That strange sound was either the wail of a banshee, or a flock of seagulls and I don't mean the 80's band. Nelson is handsome in his beautiful, black coat. You've fed him, now he's yours. With all of those chickens about, when can a girl get an invitation to quiche? Kidding, well, not really. What a talented man you'd be to have around the house. "Dear, I've broken a bowl." "Never mind, bring me my axe." Thanks for another inspirational video. Enjoyed as usual.
Fascinating! watching you lovingly, masterfully craft that bowl from an old piece of reclaimed wood. I was in awe. Thank you for the history lessons as well Si.
Oh yes! I would be so happy just sitting on a rock and scraping to find stuff. It’s so incredibly satisfying! I’ve been waiting on a good sit and scrape! That strange noise was quit haunting! Exciting!! Gorgeous little bowl, your so talented Si!
You are such a multi talented guy! You are also the most knowledgable of all the mudlarkers on You Tube. I was wondering, did you go to school to learn all of the history behind the artifacts you find,or is it just from online research and an abundance of experience doing the actual mudlarking.? You remind me of my Civil War re-enacting buddies who were walking history books! If all of this is your full time job, you are truly blessed!
Hi Linda. I hated history at school. It was just big books of dates and facts, so I dropped it and took Geography. I have learned everything post school from talking to more experienced mudlarkers, online groups and watching history programmes. It’s just a hobby tho
The bowl is up to £72 already. Hope it at the very least tripples. Great charity Si. Chickens are one of the most persecuted livestock animals worldwide, in my opinion. Also, I left a message on one of your older videos recently(ish) "Mudlarking and MUDbarking". Told a Thames story I think you would find funny and interesting. You probably didn't see it as it's an old vid. Great episode as per usual.
Si, make sure you sign everything. Make a great note stating where found by date. These are now you're legacy! Love seeing Red, Red, Red and Red, Red and their other sister Red. Glad cat doesn't need chicken on his menu! Gotta run and see your beautiful bowl. Blessings
Haunted Thames? Sounded like an eerie groan to me. The coins are awesome and in good condition Si and your bowl turned out beautiful! Gorgeous red/purple wood. Luv it. The best tho has to be Nelson! Pretty Kitty and the hens.
Wow! That bowl turned out beautiful. I love seeing what many and different creations artists come up with. From one artists heart to another, your amazingly talented and should be so proud. Hi from Alabama, USA 😘
I really enjoy your night larks. The tiny things in the mud are fascinating. Great finds, lovely coins. But the star of the show was Nelson. He obviously loves you Si. I think you should make it official and claim him as your own. You two make a great team. Would love to have the bowl. It’s just amazing that you took that discarded unwanted chunk of wood and turned (no pun intended) it into a work of art. Thanks for sharing all.
The bowl turned out really well! Congrats on that 👍 but my favorite find was the GIII coin from 1795, absolutely gorgeous! 😲 Thanks Si - good luck with the Hen funds - love from Denmark 🌸 💕
Gotta wonder how many will comment w/ hearts and love because of Nelson, LOL Nice hunt and great work! Thanks for sharing it all w/ us! Cheers from Maine
Oh, what a lovely bowl, Si! What stories that wood and those nails could tell, could they only speak! I love Nelson, he's a gorgeous boy! Another awesome adventure!😊💖
Great finds, as always!!! You did a realllly nice job turning that bowl! I'm cautiously thinking it's mahogany wood, with it's tight grain and color. Gorgeous!!!
Once again, Si, you have proven yourself to be the original Renaissance man we all knew you were! Great video and congratulations to you and Matt on your finds. Great wooden bowl and that kitty knows a sucker when he found one! Heehee....
I'd like to suggest: Use a metal detector on the wood before cutting or turning. It can find hidden nails. ( It can save hundreds of dollars if you are a sawyer.) From the looks of it, your lathe tools seem like they could stand a good sharpening. They will then leave a much smoother and easier cut. A conical fine/ hollow gouge stone for lathe tools is quite inexpensive. Mine was under $10.00 USD. Some different grades of sandpaper might also help, unless you were trying for the cruder, more primitive look. In a pinch, you can use (literally) pieces of sand stone! or make your own sandpaper with heavy paper as the backing, a light coat of glue and then coat liberally with different grits of sand. A prospecting classifier set really can help with that. Let it dry for a couple of days & you are ready to go. I applaud your adopting Nelson The Cat and the Chicken Rescue charity.
He seems smarter than the average bear, like to have edited that entire craft down to a few minutes only putting in a few highlights. I dont think he's teaching nor claiming to be a professional woodworker. anyway, I agree with the idea that his crafts are less refined on purpose. He's very creative with all of his craft ideas and amusing. I think he puts more effort into the videos cuz theyre banging awesome.
Morning Si and Cuffs it’s a beautiful time for a grand adventure! You always come up with wonderful ideas for a project. Very impressed by your bowl it’s a piece of art
Another great video, nice coins. That bowl is gorgeous! Love the hens and its great that you are doing a benefit for them via the bowl auction. You truly are a renaissance man, so many different talents and so much knowledge on many different subjects. And Nelson is a very, very handsome kitty :) The bowl has gone beyond my budget already, its a beauty and worth it. I hope it sells for HUGE $$ for your charity :)
Yep I heard the noise. It sounded like a Monk chanting/wailing when the love token was rubbed. The Monk had been in love with someone years ago and when you rubbed the love token the Monk was released from it's pain and hurt of a love unrequited... :-)

That bowl .... Wow ! Stunning ! I did smile when you said Nelson is a stray . Nooo! He belongs to you ! Lucky you he is lovely 😊
That bowl turned out just as gorgeous as the first one. That wood is spectacular especially when you oil it.

Nelson is your best find!.....And he makes a genuine Roman bowl! Beautiful!!! Nelson would like the bowl better filled with kibble! Lol
Beautifully executed! Love the addition of you nail finds
This is among the groovyist larking videos I've seen. I can't get over that ring at the beginning, and great job on the bowl.
Love the bowl! Maybe you could make key chains from found wood and an added nail head for your etsy shop! Well done as usual!
If time allows 👍🏻🐾🧡
