Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is officially underway, and that means it’s time to introduce some new characters! Shang-Chi played by Simu Liu is the latest addition to the MCU and it’s therefore time for him to get the traditional superhero origin movie treatment!
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings definitely raises some questions though. Like why did Shang-Chi’s father waste time sending assassins after them? Are those technically rings or bracelets? Why do best friends always insist on saying how long you’ve been friends? Why do they all get put in a cell that’s easy to escape from? How can Trevor Slattery communicate with Morris? Why are they in a BMW? What’s going on through all those VFX?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the Pitch Meeting that led to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

The bus scene😂😂😂 baguette

THE TEN BRACELETS 😂😂😂 I have NEVER questioned they were never worn as rings on fingers
AFAIK the official reason was, that they felt they would look too close like the infinity stones if they were rings instead of bracelets.
Why are there only 11 likes on this comment lol. Take a like :)
Bracelets are just rings worn on the wrist. Honestly a ring is just a ridged hoop.
I think it also was because some Chinese martial arts use bracelet/wrist rings as added weight while they train.

"Very colorful but somehow completely gray"
Why is this so accurate?
So true. I feel like marvel movies sacrifice the special effects to make them look good, but just everything has to be desaturated. I mean just compare Holland’s suit to all the others…..also that shitty lookin airport scene in Civil War….everything’s just grey and bland
@@NotTheRealPD That might partially be a problem with the cameras. The fancy digital ones sacrifice some color for higher definition, so they have to add it back in. I don't know if it's still a problem, that was from a 5(?) year old article.

At first, I was surprised they casted Tony Leung. I am glad they got a Hong Kong actor. But he usually plays heroes or antiheroes. So I was curious to why he was playing the villain. After watching the film, I understand why.
his performance really gave wenwu a great backstory. he made him more than just a super bad villain. he made him a failed father and a grieving husband as well, so that he's a more rounded and sympathetic villain.
Yeah, I like that there's some nuance to the character. He's not a cartoonishly evil villain, but they also don't sugarcoat the fact that he's still a very bad man who must be stopped.
@@lanceturley7745 Being pure evil is cartoonish?
You realize that even in the real world some people are just bad for the sake of being bad. There’s not always some gray motive behind it.
In the comics Doctor Doom doesn’t really have any nuance when it comes to motives, he’s bad because he wants power and he’s one of Marvel’s most popular villains of all time.
At best people can say well he thinks his way of ruling is the only way to rule.
I think Venom 2 will be refreshing because Carnage looks to be pure evil. Someone who just enjoys creating carnage, pun intended. Also just happens to be one of Marvel’s more popular villains, go figure.

Honestly, one of the best improvements they could've done about Katie becoming a god archer is actually having her mom bring it up or have some medals she got for highschool archery or something. Blah blah not good enough for parents, dropped it when it got too hard. Makes it a little bit better she somehow hit a shot on a moving target, probably half a mile away without any equipment.
Yeah at least Shang-Chi had training before so it kind of makes sense that he would be able to train a little more (maybe still not as much as they did but at least they have some sort of base so it's that much more plausible.)
Katie afaik has no experience at all. fwiw though while they do score a critical hit, they at least don't spend the battle outshining everyone with archery skills they learned overnight
I hated this about the movie. She was supposed to be comic relief, but she somehow ended up saving the day. She was like Rose from the newer star wars movie. Irrelevant bad character that somehow ends up playing a vital role

I get the joke here, but obviously she practiced what she watched..

@@OppositeofHATE7 Which is still very limiting to not have an actual teacher, especially when your trying to measure up to someone who will bloody his fists with that level of dedication but your training in secret so no one can see any injuries you get.

She claims she learned better.
1. We meet her much, much later. She has had years of real world training by then. Probably beginning against opponents who weren't expecting a runaway teen girl to be much of a threat.
2. She only dominates her brother because he refuses to fight her. And because she can never hurt him as much as he hurt her.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 Good points, but extra training isn't shown. It is unlikely she could run a very large and successful business (which might require 70-80 hour work weeks) and get enough training to dominate the average ten rings grunt who presumable spent quite a bit of their day training.
If we are being generous with our assumptions, I can certainly suspend my disbelieve here. But it would have been nice to get some dialogue showing what the writer intended as the explanation rather then just some vague "I taught myself better" which is clearly not the entire story.

So extremely clever!!!

Was waiting for the mocking of how Shang-Chi’s aunt seemed to know everything about Shang-Chi and Xaling’s life, from their adult clothes size to Xaling not being able to train with the Ten Rings organization and other tidbits.
Because magic.
But for real i thought the exact same thing about the clothes
Magic.
I'm guessing her mum must of told her, tbh I didn't really notice that whilst watching the movie

Anyone else back here after the Simu Liu special?
Writer: Hey we're finally bringing in Iron Man's arch-enemy!
Executive: Well Tony Stark is dead, is that going to be a problem?
Writer: Actually, it's going to be super easy! Barely an inconvenience!
when i was a kid, the only way to "see" rated r movies was reading their parody in mad magazine -- screen rant continues this fine tradition, but with marvel movies
You are spot on. I was well-versed in the plots of popular movies because of Mad magazine!
Was that the one with the Spy vs Spy cartoons? Or was that Cracked? Anyway, I almost always found them to be the most entertaining thing in the whole issue.
@@johns9652 Mad magazines had Spy vs. Spy. I always considered Cracked a poor-man's Mad magazine...sorta like a New York Mets to the NY Yankees (sure, you're still watching baseball but it's the Kirkland brand)

It's the opposite of subtle but yea, laughed at that quite a bit.
As subtle as shouting in a tunnel

It was super difficult, a huge inconvenience - but I managed to avoid watching Ryan doing a Pitch Meeting for about two months so I could do exactly what I'm doing right now - binge watching Pitch Meetings! 😁
Is it just me that's starting to believe these 2 guys are really separate people the more I watch these bits lol 😂 Ryan does it so well
[bzzzz] "He's onto us! Initiate Code George!"

"So then the Ten Rings Organization is going to prepare for war against the village of Ta Lo so that Xu Wenwu can free what he thinks is his trapped wife."

"What? Bullshit, why?"
"Well, they're only taking like 6 vehicles-"
"BMWs."
"Right, BMWs, worth of men in, and they're all armed with crossbows that mildly stun and "swords" that mildly stun, that sort of thing."
"The assassins, that KILL people for a living, only take less-than-lethal weaponry into a situation that their leader blatantly murdered men in a bar over."
"Yep! He even gives them the command to "Burn it to the ground!" and they just start engaging in one-on-one combat to subdue the Ta Lo natives without injuring them."
"Huh. But why would they do that?"
"So the movie can happen!"
"Ah."
"Yeah, I needed the Ta Lo natives to survive so that they could use their dragonscale weaponry against the soul stealing demons later on."
"But there's seriously not even a single grenade or firearm to be seen in their loadout?"
"Sir, I'm gonna need you to get ALL the way off my back about what a sociopathic private assassin organization-for-hire would and would not bring into an active war zone with the highest possible personal stakes of its leader."
"Oh sorry, let me get off of that thing!"
^ Ryan, I think you dropped a page of your script!
To say i was frustrated about this is an understatement, thanks for summarizing my feelings lmao
That was my first comment as well seeing ten rings unload from BMWs: oh, no machine guns??
Also how the hell did their entire convoy get through the forest that eats people?
As for the deal with the Ten Rings themselves, maybe he plans on running the summer AND winter Olympics! That IS ambitious! 😁

I loved the scene where Shang-Chi yells “IT’S RINGIN’ TIME!”
I like how the Ten Rings (Bracelets) looked and worked as one. That way, loosing one doesn’t cost you a specific power like it did in the comics.
And probably they work like thor's hammer, respond to his commands only, like only he can wield it
"I love that we can retroactively make our unpopular decisiona seem calculated and deliberate and important" hahahaha maybe they'll somehow make The Inhumans not suck
The inhumans were not a part of Marvel Studios.
Fifty comments already? Dang. Also, Tony Leung made me cry with every screening.
The Father/Son dynamic was really well done! Tony Leung is a legend and it was so awesome to see him be part of the MCU!
Really nails that screen presence ~ reminds me of Anthony Hopkins
Wow, wow, wow... this pitch writer is actually getting better over the years! The Shang-Chi movie is not half as bad as some of the others he came up with. Tight!
"So, are the rings going to be explained at all?"
"It's gonna be completely vague, so I could do whatever I want with it In the end!"
"Ah, smart."

Producer: Yeah. We could. or…
*Cuts to them singing karaoke
Nice lol
We should totally ask Ryan to do that 😂
Couple of other "Oopsies" you could have used: City buses of that size have air-brakes specifically designed to clam tight at the first sign of a leak or break (bus should have stopped right away). Also, the fact that both bus drivers had power steering suggests neither of them ever tried to turn off the engine which would have resulted in engine braking to slow the bus down.
The bus drivers paid for the full speedometers, they will use the full speedometers.
Doesn't busses also have handbrakes like cars do?
Why would they want to stop the bus? Everyone knows buses explode if you do that
I really liked the ending fight. True it was mainly two huge monsters fighting but when Shang chi delivered the final blow and everything slowed down and the score started playing I remember I was sitting in awe in the theatre. It's fine if you like it tho I get the complaints.
I genuinely had no idea what was happening with the big CGI battle.
The sucker VS the dragon, which can magically create solid water spikes whilst the sucker is sucking and Shaun is spinning rings in it's stomach really fast until it explodes.

Shang-Chi: Soul sucking demons.

While technically it is unclear how Slattery can speak with the dijang, it's super easy to assume how. He's been Xu Wenwu's jester for ~11 years and the dijang could have been there for most or all of that time. That's plenty of time for an intelligent creature to teach Trevor its language
Also the creature is somewhat magical so it could be that they developed a sort of telepathic bond.
"Yeah, maybe we should find a new thing."
"*No.*"
So MCU XD
They've made a trillion dollars off the MCU by repeating themselves to a gullible audience that can't handle an intellectual challenge, so expecting Disney, which hasn't really done art since Fantasia, to change things up is... hopeless.
Almost choked on my Cheetos when he said that. What made it funny was the tone he used and the face he made. Comic genius.
Can you blame them? Repeating a winning formula is tight! Also super easy, barely an inconvenience, so I'm gonna need you to get all the way off Marvel's back about it.

Another fantastic and accurate episode! Especially the part where the SE feels wierd about a girl and a guy being just friends! A large amount of dudes think that men and women can't be simply friends!
Today many people can't fathom 2 guys being good friends without them being gay.
@@sirellyn wat?
@@johngr1747 Many recent movies don't have 2 guys who are good friends just as good friends. There's almost always some sexual overtones or an outright gay relationship.
Have you been watching recent movies?
Chance 2 guys would be interested in each other 5% * 5% (Inflated gay/bi population) = 0.25%
Chance a single guy and girl might be interested in each other 95% * 95% (average hetrosexual demographic) = 90.25%
