Mortal Kombat was one of the very first video games to get adapted into a Hollywood movie back in 1995 and along with movies like Super Mario Bros, Double Dragon and Street Fighter, set the tone for video game movies being… not so great. Now, 26 years later, Hollywood is ready to breathe new life into the franchise and take a shot at the popular game franchise.
2021’s Mortal Kombat definitely raises some questions. Like why are we following this made-up Cole Young guy when there are about a hundred existing characters to choose from? How deep does this dragon-mark champion concept go exactly? Why did Cole go back to his family after he specifically left them to keep them safe? How exactly is Lord Raiden allowed to intervene? If death is just another portal and all these characters can come back, did any of this even matter?

I feel like it played to his fight style. Throughout the movie Cole showed that he can taking a beating. Alot. Like the whole movie. But he always gets back up so it makes sense that his arkana is a defensive power. Especially since the whole goal is protecting him and his family.

Adding your own original character into a movie filled with many existing characters is tight.
You know whats more tight? Removing one original beloved character, and debuff the main character from the game story (Liu Kang) and the yellow ninja gamers were so eager to see fight, so the new guy has to save him.

I spent the whole time I watched this film for the first time thinking, "Who's this Cole guy? Was he a character from the game? Why not just make him Johnny Cage?"
Half way in, I realised, that the cute teengirl was supposed to be his daughter and not his girlfriend.

That's funny cause that's what they did with the recent animated movie and guess what, it was a tonne better than the film adaptation. Hell, it even had the same opening.
From what I've heard, they specifically avoided having Johnny Cage, cause having a new OC to replace the primary character of the series makes things "better" according to certain people who want to shove their OCs in various franchises. Which of course kinda makes the whole things bleh, especially since if I recall, Mortal Kombat wouldn't have happened without Johnny Cage, since the game was originally suppose to be a Jean-Claude Van Damme game with Johnny Cage originally suppose to be Jean-Claude Van Damme. But when the rights for that fell through, the repurposed things.

2021 Raiden and Shang Tsung were just awful in this movie. Shang Tsung looks like a little b*tch trying to act tough and Raiden looked like he was walking around with hemorrhoids, he looked THAT stiff and awkward.
As cheesy as the 1995 movie was, you gotta admit that the characters had more heart and charisma.

Having literal plot armor was my thought exactly when Cole got his powers.. Whoever came up with that has a sick sense of humor because they had to know what they were doing.

It did kinda come off as Sonya being the protagonist of an entirely different MK movie that the inclusion of Cole made them skip. She actually made two rivals over the course of the film, and actually earned her power. That Cole ended up being the one to fight Mileena despite the film taking the time to set her up as a rival for Sonya, made it really weird.

My "Wut?" Moment was Liu Kang's intro. Kano tells him to not come any closer, Liu Kang shoots him in the face with a fireball and IMMEDIATELY says "I'm not your enemy"
After two weeks of waiting patiently, I finally watched the movie and this pitch meeting is worth it
I'm so happy that Ryan addressed the fact that the main character IS NOT A GAME CHARACTER. because that drives me NUCKIN' FUTS, how the writers think that forcing us to focus on a character UNRELATED TO THE VIDEO GAME THAT FILM IS BASED ON is a smart thing to do (I'm also looking at YOU, 'Resident Evil' & 'Monster Hunter'!). He might be the best champion who gets long age as a winner of the tournament.
The only thing bothering me is the weird use of raiden’s transportation ability.
In the movie, Sub-Zero does mention a Shirai Ryu/Lin Kuei rivalry, but it's said so quick that one could forget about it
I got the impression that MK champions are essentially ageless and gather power over time.
Hence Bi Han got an upgrade to Sub Zero with much stronger ice powers and Scorpion has the hellfire thing which basically seems like they ripped it off Ghost Rider.

@@almalone3282 To be fair, video game protagonists don't need to be well developed since you are playing them and experiencing the adventure yourself. Movie audiences can only watch passively, so the character needs to be interesting, that's where video game movies often fail.

I think they wanted to have an Asian protagonist and the pre-existing Asian characters wouldn't work as an avatar for the audience.

I love this series, but why aren’t all of the episodes in the channel playlist? I just found an episode that I’d never seen before and upon double checking saw it wasn’t in there. A different playlist I found had 236 episodes, without any of the compilation videos, and the official screen rant one only has 233 including those. That means a lot are missing. I know for sure Friday the 13th, pirates of the carribean sequels, and alien covenant are missing, and there’s presumably more I don’t know of. Please add all the videos to the official screen rant playlist, the channel has way to many videos to find them otherwise

Being that Mortal Kombat is an established universe with lore that exists outside of the tournaments...we could literally have MK films that revolve around like...Shao Khan on his konquest of Outworld. Or maybe an invasion from another realm/world we haven't seen before. Like some kind of alien/monster world of eldritch terrors that basically forces some of our favourite heroes/villains to kooperate, to just SLAUGHTER the new threat and create a gore-filled movie (or series) where we actually get to cheer for our favourites performing iconic fatalities left/right and see them make more than just a single appearance before getting killed off (plus it gives the excuse to have the baddies actually pull off some kills/finishers without losing any "good guys" that Hollywood seems afraid to ever let die in an MK movie).
Ryan can make a really boring movie into a really funny Pitch Meeting, that man deserves so much credit

I've always known of Pitch Meeting, but would only casually watch them sometimes when they came up.
But for the last week or so, I've become entirely addicted. I cannot stop watching these.

Everytime I start watching a pitch meeting I wonder how he wil put in his famous "barely an inconvenience" gag this time - and everytime it makes me laugh.

EDIT: I haven't seen this movie and I have no opinion on it. I mean that Ryan usually acts somewhat unbiased towards the pitch movies, so this feels odd.
I don't see how anyone liked this movie, but most of my friends think it was awesome. Apparently 2 hours of special effects and fan service are enough for people.

great fights and special effects but terrible story and characters......well except fr Kano, tht guy basically carried the movie.
@@monkeyflower3851 I mean it's not that hard to imagine someone thinking this movie was decent or even good. I personally think it was decent as kano was great and same with kung Lao,sub zero and scorpion so it was a manageable movie.
