Any place selling the G7 at this price anymore?
what happened to camera prices?? G7 is now $800!
WOW!!! The G7 Really had Great Color Reproduction. Im amazed that it did so Well. I really cant believe the colors coming out of that thing. Looks so Good.
The fact that a $500 camera is competing with a $3500 full frame monster is shocking!
That only shows how fucking lazy canon is!
Well, Canon built a really good still camera that shoots video, Panasonic built a good video camera that shoots stills.
Luis Ortiz A lot of differences in camera price is more build quality and speed auto focus points than image quality. Look at a Nikon D90 and a D300 same image sensor
The Panny is a video camera with photo capability, the Canon is a photo camera with video capability. Canon purposefully crippled the 5Dm4's video so you would buy their over-priced cine line video.
4k is only 8 megapixels every sensor today is capable of producing it technically. We know all don't plus most don't use the full sensor. You spend more on features and build quality than image or video quality
Actually a stream of data and processing it on the fly is a big deal. That's why you need totally different hardware for 4K video. It's not only a matter of pixel count on sensor. That's not a surprise. A surprise is that you have no zebra, focus peaking etc. stuff in regular software and you have it on Lantern. Why Canon is not including it as an options???
I love my G7 :)
Ooof
I gave the edge to B, but it was close on everything but the focus tracking.
yeah ... the focus tracking is hellish slow ...
OMG!! I thought A is Canon 5D mark IV!! 😳 It's just great!💪 definitely!
Me too..
I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU.
SPOILER ALERT JEEZ
Come'n you're faking it - after AF test even the dumbest person could tell which one is which.
You thought so because your super amateurish eye doesn't know what to look for. G7 was way too easy to spot this time.
watched in fullscreen on a 5K monitor... 'A' wins everytime except that autofucus abomination
but no one uses AF
@jon bradley I agree
Now I know not to buy a 5K monitor. Thanks LOL
@@acadia5898 No one uses AF, where did you read that? Peter Mckinnon (sp) uses AF, everyone does since Canon and sony.
@@africanhistory yeah if you are a vlogger it should be useful, but not as a filmmaker
It's more like $447 G7 vs $4399 5D Mark IV because you need a lens not just the body. With the stock 24-70mm lens the 5D is $4399.
I bought my G7 around April and i still love it. I got it from b&h for $599 but it came with a rode mic so totally worth it.
Great video.
JustDigIt so dope
watching this on the big screen (the tv), apart from the colour balance (for me the B camera was much warmer, almost yellow in some cases compared to the A camera) the differences were negligible.
if the old G7 can compete this well against the new 5D IV, makes you wonder how the GH5 will compare when it finally arrives next spring.
oh, also the B camera scored more for me than A.
how do you know the gh5 comes out in the spring? I havent heard of any datesss
Johann Lara partly from rumours. but mainly from panasonic who say "early 2017" which to me means spring.
Photokina they announced it to release early 2017
psionicdreams that is what I got. Canon was warmer
I really liked your comparison style of not showing the actual brands and just calling each camera either A or B. This really gives people the ability to compare unbiased. I have always wished electronic stores (i.e. Best Buy, Costco, Target, etc.) would cover up the brands and prices of TVs so you could shop unbiased.
I'm a Panasonic GH4 user, but the detail/sharpness of the 5D is better than the G7. That said, the small size and usability of the Panasonic cameras is far superior, for a fraction of the price. Not to mention that horrific codec the 5d uses makes it a non-starter for me.
Benjamin Gadberry At 4k, sharpness hardly matters. You’re still hitting max sharpness on all phones and computers pretty much
Josh Meade wait what?
Josh Meade the story matters the most - if the story is good enough people forgive even if it was shot in 360p
Michael, yup... me too. And even 720p is just ok nowadays. Shaky videos are a no-no for me too.
720p is not okay nowadays. Makes things blurry on my and most other peoples high resolution screens.
I’m shocked. I gave B a few wins and assumed A was the 5D. Shocked! Now even more proud to own the G7.
To my much untrained eye, it was a 50/50 split... so by default its a clear win for the g7 @ the pricepoint! The extra cash saved makes for so many more tools for the trade.. Thanks for the comparison!
Great job. Awesome for some lower cost options to get into 4K. Combine the G85 w/Shogun and a speedbooster you are ready to rock.
The G7 is a strong competitor, but the Mark IV seems more suited toward photography than moviemaking.
Great comparison! I loved that it was a blind comparison -- really great idea. I just bought the Panasonic G7 because of the great price, but having the money to buy the Mark IV has been one of my "dream" cameras. I'll be honest, in some of the shots, I couldn't really tell that much of a difference -- most looked the same to me. But in the Dynamic Range, I though the G7 had the much better resolution. I am now super excited to own the G7 and explore its 4K options more!
I liked A better for most stuff but the autofocus at the end is a deal killer. That was terrible.
yeah, i just use manual focus for my g7
The autofocus is pretty good actually. Just not so much on the 25mm 1,7. Really depends on the lense.
I liked also A but for instanse I use autofocus maybe only 10% of time, and only for a amateur or free time video stuff.
Same, if I'm shooting videos, most of the time I use manual. Autofocus with photos is usually good, but that's because it's not tracking.
megaapfel do you know any particular lenses that work well for the g7's autofocus? currently using the 25mm 1,7 myself
I'm not a filmmaker, but both sets of images looked the same to me, as a casual viewer.
Exactly ! Just imagine when one has to put effort to find the difference, then is it worth paying 6 times higher for that costlier body ?
I can see a difference, but you're right, they are both pretty comparable. Which is why the Panasonic G7 is so impressive seeing as how it's $500 with a 'kit lens' versus the Canon 5d Mark IV at over $3000 even without a lens.
Lol I honestly preferred the g7
It was pretty obvious to me that there was a difference. But I wasn't quite sure which one was better until I saw the auto focus test. Which is when I knew the 5d was B
Nope they were very big differences but the Panasonic did a surprisingly great job. Wasn’t expecting it to be that good.
OMG the g7 was soooo good! I swear I thought A was the 5D for shure.... wow!
WHOA!! I was shocked!! I guessed A.
I'm gonna love my G7! I just bought it : )
Haha I just bought one too and had the exact same reaction
A for a lumix g7 ???... Omg .. I love that too
I know this video is old but I’m just catching up on your channel, great stuff 👍 I use Panasonic g7s as my a and b cameras. I use Canon 750D for raw photography. The best budget setup ever!
These were the days when the Yuryevs truly shined…wish they would do more of this type of thing now. Calmer, very unbiased.
B is the G7
Mine has pretty decent autofocus and A looked slightly better in some situations
edit: yo wtf
why "yo wtf"?
@@DerEliSpielt cuz he was wrong
Watching on a 40" 4 k monitor the G7 stands out easily. The Canon colour was poor.
A4k test needs to be watched on 4k folks.
I love my G7, those cameras are little beasts, especially for the price.
The autofocus test actually gave it away, I know the Canon is unbeatable there. For all the other tests I guessed mostly wrong and was surprised to find out afterwards that the G7 actually has a more pleasant colour rendering and better performance at high ISO. I'm very happy with my G7!
for me, camera A won 7, B won 3, one was tied.
Oh wow! I was really hoping it would be the G7, that's kinda awesome ^^
I voted 8/10 for camera a which I just learned is the G7. My pockets are so excited as well as the content creator side of me. Thank you, Max. This vid is improving life 9 months later still!
All 'A' until the last test, which 'B' won (no preference for test 8)
Not overly surprised to find that 'A' was the Panasonic.
I had the same result. I was thinking A was the Canon until the auto focus test.
Excellent comparison!
Truly in depth and unbiased, the G7 held it's ground very well!
I see why many like g7 more, prescription of quality. Cam B does show better overall quality but it requires a bit touching. But hey, Canon allows uploading custom curve into body.
What a brilliant idea for a video. I was gonna get a GH5 but now I'm thinking of checking out the G80 which would leave me some cash for a speed booster and possibly an additional lens. I'd love to see more videos like this. Keep up the good work.
Lets be honest here, a canon 5D m4 is a DSLR for photography not for video, if you're willing to spend that much on a DSLR for video, then you sir are a maniac. But if you're a photography freak, then you should get it, and use the video function as an extra.
If you want video you should look at the brand new Sony A7R Mark 3 maybe. I mean that has better video features than the 5D Mark 4, so it's more practical. AND you can use your Canon lenses too thru an adapter.
So is G7 also for still photography not filming, GH4/5 is for filming, G7/8/85/9 Zara for still
My lens I use on the g7 cost more then the camres
Martin > Yeah i was waiting for this. Someone to jump in and defend a crippled product with some theory to support why its not required to perform well in video. LOL.
I've been using it for both photo and video and I can tell you that this camera is a beast. With C-log, I can push this image way further to what I need it to be than the G7. These little tests are fine, but ultimately everyone leaves out the post production portion for some reason. Look at a couple recent short films using both cameras in 4k, big difference.
Thanks to you I've just got my first camera - LX100. I was about to get the g7 but lx100 is more jacket-pocket friendly :) But thanks to your videos I found that lumix cameras are the best for the price!
thank you for this... I may look into Panasonic cameras now!
This video is so awesome. Love the interaction presented to us viewers! Learned a bit as well! Thanks!
Nice one! I'd love to see a a6300/6500 4K vs A7ii, A7rii, A7sii, 5diii, 5div, etc. Basically, a6300/6500 vs all the other FF 4K cameras.
From what I've seen, a6300 high-ISO low-light is even better than all of the Sony and Canon FF cameras (except only 1 camera - the A7sii of course). But, the a6300 high-ISO is still much better than the base A7ii and also the 5diii..both FF cameras!
Crazy.. I thought A was much better and thought it was the FF. Better skin tones and color, sharper, way better DR, etc.
He compared the g7 to the A7S ii
A great test and I am so happy that I have the G7 coming in two weeks for my birthday i can't wait to try it out. I only picked B on one of the tests and that was obviously the video autofocus tracking but everything else I scored as A 👍🏻 thanks for making my day!
I'm also interested in the g85. No anti aliasing and 5 axis is big for me. I'm using the gf7 and I like it.
Iso is better than d80 almost as good as my old d7000 better than my ep5 which is dying but I miss 5 axis and iso 400 shooting at night.
Do you have the g85 now? I am currently debating between the 77d, 80d, panasonic g85 ✨👍
I heard the 5 axis OIS doesn't work while recording in 4K ?
I just did a photoshoot with the g7 for a band and the band loved the pics and the best part is...I did absolutely NO editing in post! All in camera! The built in filters are great!!
i like the A camera.. but the auto focus on B camera is awesome... but for the price i ll go for A
8:2 for the G7 for me. I was very sure, that A was the 5D until the Autofocus comparison came on. Amazing Test!
When will Canon learn? The 5d Mark 3 was their money maker. I really doubt the 5D4 is going to sell as well. All Canon's fault. Does Canon expect all 5D3 users go out and buy the C300M2? I don't get what they are thinking.
+Shi Womino yes but the average photographer who wants to do both will probably stick to m3
I agree with this conclusion. Though the average photographer does not do both.
the canon c300 mk2 is an amazing camera to use (i've only rented it); compact, high-quality cinema camera, but 13,000 vs 8,000 for the sony fs7. canon needs to make a 4k c100, a 6k c300 and an 8k c700 to be competitive.
I have 2 c300mk2s. :)
Sure!
It was a very close call but I did prefer camera B in all but two tests. These cameras were so close in picture quality I was stunned. You have sold me on the G7
Had 5 for A and 6 for B
so almost even
How come? There were just 10 cases
Ok might have written down a case twice
Interesting I came out 6-4. Amazing considering one is $3,500.00 vs ~$500.00. Makes me a little worried about my Canon resale value down the road
Have been browsing through YTB for ages. Finally a review for the time. Big thumbs up🙏🏻
On an iPhone early in the morning before caffeine, B
so you saw literally nothing on the little screen with low resolution, nice
Resolution doesn't matter, but DPI and viewing distance does. A phone usually has a higher score in this aspect than even a 4k monitor will at 28" and 26" viewing distance.
Just needed to poke the second comment you made. We ended up with the same conclusion that B was a bit better overall.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was 24"-26" so good guess.
My monitor:
3840x2160
33.5"x18.8"
~114 ppi (device surface)
~24" viewing distance
iPhone 6 plus (5.5"):
1920x1080
4.79"x2.69"
~401 ppi (device surface)
~6.86" viewing distance for approximate equivalent pixel density. Can you focus that close?
~3" for field-of-vision approximate equivalence, which is irrelevant to this situation.
But that's not even the whole story! I was viewing the footage at its native resolution without significant re-sampling (well one hopes, but never quite trusts GPU configs). The best case scenario is that the iPhone was playing 4K downres'ed to 1920. I'm not sure whether the iPhone's mp4 codecs are better at that conversion than youtube but for the sake of argument let's call it a draw. For every 4 pixels I can see (and when I lean a little closer I can make out individual pixels) you're seeing 1 that is some form of an average of my 4. If using the 1080p playback from youtube there's probably some spatial and temporal compression on top of the scaling, although not as severe as if the content was native 1080p.
Did that matter for the more important tests? No. The resolving properties of both cameras in this test were very close and wouldn't be a factor to a sane person in choosing between them for 4K video. However, the resolution and noise tests are definitely different when downres'ed to 1080p.
I don't think the phone's resolution was relevant in evaluating the difference between these cameras in this test. I noted in another comment that the different in lenses was far more pertinent. Most of the differences between cameras were in color representation which is going to vary more and is less predictable than resolution. Also, while I have confidence in my resolution-based opinions, my monitor isn't a well-spec'ed IPS nor is it calibrated to any standard, so I'm not claiming that mine is necessarily "better-than-yours".
Sorry your paragraphy was a bit long, so I didn't read all, and to your last paragraph, that I agreed that lens actually impact the quality more than the camera, but hey, that Panasonic lens was under $150 on sale and the Sigma (forgot and didn't research) should be at least $800-1200, even so, using such mid-high end equipments still struggle to smoke the $500 camera I say it's already a lost to the 5D4.
Haha same bro #bulletproof morning routine
Fantastic review! Honest, useful and eye opening. We just discovered you guys and we’re looking forward to see more of your videos
I scored all A's bar 1 clip. I have just got the Panasonic G80/85 which so far is great-both the video and stills look sharp and detailed straight out of camera and I'm sure G7 is not far behind.
I got one too Steve, great cam and with IBIS, no need for any shoulder rigs. Great at weddings
G7 the ultimate camera on a budget! Such a little beast and best value for features- awesome vid comparison!
OMG, most of my answers were A except for the autofocus test
Wow! Great revue even now! Thanks Max!
Camera A did better on most, except the autofocus
Funny thing is that the G7 normally tracks AF very well, especially with DFD and Panasonic lenses.
Really? I mean i saw a lot of reviews and all agree that autofocus is slow. Please can you give me more info? :DDD
The AF is really fantastic with all the panasonic lenses, really fast even in low light conditions
Search a bit :)
Lamaa Sticot for video?
Max Yuryev
Yeah, even for video ! Sorry for the wait
wow, that really blew me away, with the exception of the dpaf, the Panasonic pulls ahead in every single test, going to go pick up one right now
This one was too easy Not to See. Canon's Color Science is just so easy to recognize.
Interesting side by side comparisons! I'm very happy with my Lumix G7 which I upgraded to from a Canon t3i. I had a couple of Canon EF mount lenses I wanted to use (50mm and 24-70mm) so I purchased the Metabones 0.64 Speedbooster. In addition to the Canon lenses I have a Lumix 25mm F/1.7, Lumix 14-42 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, Olympus ED-40-150mm f4.0-5.6R telephoto (which I bought for $100.00 ) and I just bought a Rokinon 20mm f2.0 wide angle which is on sale for $299.00 at B&H Photo. I am now broke but a very happy camper with my new toys which I hope will allow me to recover some of my expense with more shooting gigs!
I personally liked a better but not by a long shot
amazing lol :D guess what my first dslr will be
***** oh yeah you're right sorry
I prefer the term mslr (mirrorless single lens reflex). camera. I saw the term mslr used at a local target to describe a canon eos m mirrorless interchangeable lens camera and for about a year, mslr is the term I used to describe cameras like the gh4, g7, A7, etc. Heck, truth be told, I still use the term mslr when I refer to dslr style mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses.
Yes, it is true there is no mirror reflex system in a camera like a Gh5. but I use the term mslr to refer to mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses built in the style of a dslr. Even if it is counter intuitive to some, i will still always use the term mslr when I refer to cameras like the Panasonic gh5 and Canon eos m5. I just feel like it is just a perfect term for cameras like those.
Mega > You liked a what better ?
Wasn't expecting much from the Canon, they literally just slapped a 4K logo on their packaging. But the photographs it takes. Simply perfect.
G7 in 2019 all the way
For the majority of the controlled environmental testing camera A was more controled and handled low light, bokeh, highlights, midtones, however the last part of the set camera B was generally better.
7:4 for A... but the autofocus on A is terrible so......
Most people who are into film and photography rately use auto focus anyways...so its teally a petk thsts not important lol
I could tell one from the other all the way from the white balance difference, G7 is a bit warmer than the 5d4, but the 5d4 is a bit sharper and have a better low light performance. And in the autofocus tracking test i was a 100 % sure that A is the G7 because i have one and it always takes forever to focus, in opposed to Canon cameras that are known for being the best in the market for that purpose. One point worthy of mentioning is that i love how the G7 have the smoothest focus shift with no breathing at all, unlike the new Nikon D500 which jumps all around when focusing, however i wish it was faster :(
we'll have to wait for the GH5 and see !
nice vid yet again! may you do a video comparison with G7 w/ kit lens VS G7 w/ sigma 18-35mm 1.8 regular adapter VS G7 w/ sigma 18-35mm 1.8 with metabones? I know this is a lot of gear if you got it would really like to know
cmfusco11 sorry I don't have a metabones nor a kit lens. But the g7 with 18-35 is a killer combo esp with speed booster
So I'm trying to use my combo for youtube videos, so close up shots on products and some B roll shots would I notice a huge difference if I am unable to get metabones adapter like I want to know how much of a difference it would make for that type of film making.
cmfusco11 if you aren't shooting in lowlight (if you can control your lighting then you won't, like for product b roll) then you don't need it.
any fairly inexpensive adapters you could recommend that aren't too costly although I'm dropping almost 800 on a lens haha, also should I wait until day after thanks giving or cyber Monday? I saw sigma had a small sale but not on this lens yet(I hope)
For adapters I would personally recommend either K&F Concept (Kent&Faith) or Leinox found on eBay. Those are regular cheap ones, but really good quality. For one with focal reducer properties, there are some like the R.J. Lens Turbo, Kipon BAVEyes and some brandless or renamed ones (don't get these!) like found in the Roxsen store on eBay, but I would personally recommend the Lens Turbo II by ZY Optics/Zhongyi/Mitakon if you don't want to pay the Metabones premium as they're great value.
I thought B was better in most things. Camera A had a yellowy tinge which can always be taken away in post production, but gave the footage less of a "high quality" feel in my opinion.
Best Price on G7➡ amzn.to/2gWOtji (price went way up on B&H but still good on Amazon) amzn.to/2gWOtji
Max Yuryev Hello friend:) just want to know how long you can shoot continously in 4k with Lumix G7?
Most versions (like U.S. version) do 30min before it stops and you just hit record again. There are a few that don't have limits though, but not sold in the States here.
Max Yuryev Thank you mate will look after towards this:)
Price went back up again =(
Is there a lens I can get for my G7 to give it better focus when shooting video. I tried making a tutorial and most of the time was wasted waiting for the focus to catch up.
A won 1-9, B won 10. I got a G7 as a gift last summer and been loving every minute of it. My favorite part is the moving screen, where you can take selfies or seeing the screen while shooting from the top. but 4k video is the main reason why I got it.
Hey man, is G7 still good option for youtubers in 2019 ??
Yeah
make sure to invest in lighting too! Budget camera with good lights beat amazing camera with ass lights most of the time
I liked the B camera for the sharpness but the skin tones on A were definitely nicer.
Camera B looks more natural
Pretty obvious to me also. But these Iphone generation do not know natural skin colors means better. The Red Camera would also fail if you showed these jokers this test.
I think B is better though the rolling shutter is a little bit worse. But I liked the colors more in the dynamic range test. They both are pretty close.
a is wayyyyy better
I'm not super-prejudiced about this stuff. I've liked Canon's color science for a long time now. But Panny's video DNA is just great IMHO. Got a G7 years ago, loved it and still use it. It'll shine in any role you choose, and the classic mirrorless smallness and lightness are undeniable. It's just a hell of a camera for the money, always was, always will be. If you can't make good video with it don't blame the camera.
5d mark 4 is biggest rip off in DSLR history
Many Canon cameras are, just happy I jumped boat recently after 6 years with Canon.
FA REAL! I don't know why people buy Canons like that. You literally can get the exact graded image that you want in camera with most prosumer and professional Panasonic cameras...cutting out that extra step in post. And now that you can adapt EF lenses and C mount lenses to these Panasonic DSLR cameras, I just don't see any reason to pay more for a Canon.
True, but no doubt Photography is superior on the Canon, main reason is probably the AF during photo, and editability on the post probably has better detail to work with, but if they were doing videography mainly, they'll go bankrupt in second.
Low light, skin tones and Canon glass. Far from a rip off. All these videos focus on video. Lets see the G7 perform under low light in as a photography camera without proper lighting at ISO 5000+ and see what camera succeeds. Cameras aren't all about video as many on youtube would have you believe. So maybe for you it is a rip off but for photography it is one of the best you can get.
Do you all not understand that the 5d was focused on being a professional still camera. Video was just a small add on
I watch a lot of tech channels and after watching two of yours, I've noticed the calming music is great. It's so much better than the loud EDM most channels output.
P.S. - I love the G7 a lot better now. Shocking results for sure.
Thanks! I like electronic music but I try to keep it neutral so that everyone enjoys the video.
Same here, just not perfect in every scenario haha.
Cheers.
HOW IS THE PHOTO ON G7?
Very noisy at high ISO. Also 16 megapixels are not much, but it helps a bit with the noise, because it allows more light per pixel. Another problem is that its image ratio is 4:3, which I personally don't like that much. I prefer wider images, but if you want to take pictures in 16:9 you are at 12 Megapixels. Also your aperture and focal length will be twice as long as on a full frame sensor, which is good if you want to make use of long telezooms, but bad for low light and bokeh. Here are a few samples, I shot recently with the G7. www.flickr.com/photos/146943457@N06/
Wow did you use the stock lens? Would you recommend this for a picture cam and cam corder all in one? Or would u rather get Sony Rx 1003 or Canon 70d?
I used the kit-lense and a Sigma 60mm F2,8 so far. You can go up to ISO 3200, but 6400 is already really noisy. The Sony Rx 1003 has a much smaller sensor than the G7 combined with 20 Megapixels, so you can expect it to be even worse in low light conditions. The G7 is certainly good for the price if you are looking for a very good video camera. You'd have to pay a lot more to come close to its quality. It easily beats the Canon 70d in that regard. The Canon 70D is not a mirrorless camera, so the viewfinder is not electronic, which means you don't see how your image will look with your current settings, but it will be much more natural and won't ever lag. You will also be able to take more shots before your battery goes empty. But you will always hear the shutter, which you can turn off on the G7. For stills I'd recommend the Canon 70D or the Sony Alpha 6000 or 6300 if you want a little bit more. They both have APS-C sensors, which are a little larger than MFT. Or you can go all out and buy a full frame camera, if low noise at high ISO and shallow depth of field are important to you. Personally I plan on upgrading to the soon to come Canon 6D Mark II, simply because of better low light capabilities, more shallow depth of field, more resolution and weather sealing. It will be much heavier than mirrorless cameras and probably won't have 4K video though, which is unfortunate considering it will probably cost 3 times more than the G7.
megaapfel thanks man!
megaapfel 4k is overrated man you're good off with the upgrade. You'll think Sony m3 will be me good for stills and vlog?
They are the same; but I think camera B is more faster processing while camera A is mostly showing more reality than B.
The 5d4 did better
i think the best combo for relative low cost 4k video is: GH4, blackmagick video assist 4k, metabones speedbooster, sigma 18-35 f 1.8 / sigma 50-100 f 1.8
I think camera A did better in dynamic range, color and low light and camera B better in maintaining details and sharpness even in lowlight and autofocus tracking accuracy.
Always check Bestbuy! Look for open-box! I just purchased the G7 for $472. Usually, the open-box will be cheaper if there is a sell on the normal price. Last week they had an openbox G4 for $649. It had minor damage around the tripod area and was missing the battery and box. Still a good deal.
You make me buy this beast :D Thank you so much. I found what I research for weeks :)
Great comparison, the image is warmer on the Canon, but on my points, the G7 wins 6 to 4. And when you're saying that the 5D Mark IV cannot export to 4K, it's a shame for Canon. What I would love to see from you is a video trying to warmer the image of the G7 to match Canon.
I didn't know until I saw the autofocus test:)
my votes were: A,B,B,B,A,A,A, tie, tie, B. So for at over $3K difference I think I would rather buy $1K in lenses for the G7 than spend $3500 on the canon and then have to still buy lenses in addition to that. I really like this format of video comparison, thanks for sharing!!!
I shoot with Canon many years now and I "recognised" colour style from the beginning. Untill you said that A is Panasonic! Incredible!!! What did Canon did with this camera? They look as they want to exit the market. Their ancient motion jpeg codec in 4k video is from the years 2002-2003. Sold already my canon 5dmkiii camera and most of the lenses. Kept Canon 100d, nice little camera to remember me about what canon was able to deliver. Panasonic, here I come!
Canon is foolish that is clear
The Nikon D5300 is great for super sharp 1080p videos (no low cut filter, more sharpness), you can change the aperture and the sensibility in real time when recording a video with the manual M mode.
It was (mostly) obvious which camera was which, especially in the auto-focus comparison. The sharpness and clarity were decidedly in favor of the 5D MkIV, but what do you expect to happen considering the wide price difference. To the G7's credit, it wasn't easy to tell which image we were looking at. I had to pause and maximize the screen to tell. As another commenter mentioned, 4K large file size on the Canon is a non-starter. It's there to check off the 4K box, but most people will not use it. G7 wins this comparison across the board except in the auto-focus department. And to be real, consistently nailing the focus is more important to me than having 4K - That's why the Caono 80D is so popular. But if you want 4K and don't mind pulling focus, the G7 is an amazing value.
4K camera comparison in 720p, nice.
I"m kind of thinking B did better overall, but I have A down for Rolling Shutter, Low Light, Highlight detail and general detail
This is exactly what I needed. Thanks so much for your awesome reviews! Very convincing.
For me it was mostly A that won, but most of the results were quite close to my eye (watching at 1080P). Only the final test, the autofocus test, really stood out as a clear difference, and B won that one. Now to see the "answers" part of the video...
I had 5 A and 5 B - that`s mind blowing considering the price difference.
7 B and 3 A for me, i agree G7 is good camera but not as serious as the Mark IV. With a good color grading, it kills it, you see it in the movements, the contrast, that's better on every ways.
I had B up 6-3. The dynamic range is is just so much better. The G7 holds up incredibly well considering the price differences, but thats often how things work - past a certain point, spending more money results in only tiny incremental returns. I couldn't imagine justifying the 5D4 over the G7 for a single-purpose vlogging cam, though.
Lets also not forget, thats a ~$1600 dollar lens on that 5D. vs a $250 lens on the G7. This means the price difference as tested isnt 500 vs 3500, but 750 vs 7100.
Well i am not an expert but i think the B has more points in my test. 4 over A=2. The rest i can not see the difference. I hope it helps. I think this is a very good way to judge the results. and learn what to look at in video and photo. Thanks.
Thanks dude, I learned some film school type things here. I'm going to have to watch it again though. LOL
(I Like your beard.)
For me, B (Canon) won all but 3 early categories, and those were close. In fact all were close enough to NOT justify paying 8x as much for the Canon... for me.
I'm a former pro, now retired. But I still want the best quality I can justify paying for.
A few weeks ago, I bought a used GX85 (Leica form factor) with a 14-140 (28 - 280 eq.). I definitely like the lens, but might go for the GX8 which had been my first pick. Some of the features, and the price, of the GX85 were better, but the EVF and dials are better for me on the GX8.
We'll see.
Thanks for your comparo... it reaffirmed my break with Canon. I sold an EOS-M with makeshift rig to get the GX85.
When I wrote down my verdict - both cameras came out with the same amount of ticks. But the 5D ended up ticking the detail and focusing marks for me, which I think is the bigger deal than some slight rolling shutter reduction. While the Panasonic images were smoother and slightly less dictracting to look at in terms of noise - it really shows that the 5D's weird codec preserves those details and doesn't turn noise into mush, as appears to be happening on the Panasonic.
That being said though - if I didn't have the 5D already for my photography and I needed a 4K camera for filming - Panasonic all the way! I wouldn't be able to justify the price unless I badly needed that autofocus :)
I think a lot of people forgot that the Canon 5D line was a stills camera first. Canon avoids putting pro level video features in their stills cameras now to avoid cannibalizing it's Cine Line.
I got exactly same amount of A's and B's.. Quite impressive for G7.
I have always heard that Panasonic cameras are designed for video more than Canon and Nikon are designed more for Photography and video is just secondary or just an added feature. I may be wrong but I don't think there is one camera that does photography and video equally great and above every other camera out there.
More than three years later, I consistently thought that the Panasonic looked better.
