    Folks STILL arguing about Kenny. Let it go, folks. The band was in a very, very tough situation and found a way to move forward. I saw them in '80 - was never able to see them with Moon. That '80 show was very easily the best concert I've ever been to. EASILY. My advice? Just enjoy every era of the Who for what it is/was. Music will never seen an era like what happened from the mid '60s to the mid '70s, but that doesn't there isn't great, great music to be found outside of that era. Just enjoy. This version of Punk and the Godfather is fantastic.

    Kenney is a great drummer in his own right why compare him to Moonie they are both great drummers in fact The Who have been very blessed with their drummers there will never be another band as legendary as them.

      I think he injected new life into the band to be honest with you because if you watch the video from 1978 It seems like they’re firing on all cylinders but you can tell Keith trying to pick up the pace at some point and he just can’t do it anymore. Great way for Keith to go out though but yet again I think Kenny kind of kick the band in the ass and said all right let’s show him what we can do

    If you have to "replace" Keith, Kenny Jones was the right choice, they benefit from his fire and his tightness. I love The Live Shows with Kenny. No disrespect to the Moon. This really Rocks.

    • @seabdv9792
      @seabdv9792 7 років тому +7

      I think he plays BETTER than Keith on this one. THIS is the version Pete wanted, I'm sure of it. I don't know what the decision was to include Kenny in The Who, but Kenny was a known, was a great drummer from one of the most underrated British bands. Kenny would be the first to admit he didn't want to be in The Who, mainly because he wanted his friend back. But to say he sucks is not accurate. Remember Keith was on drugs and booze when he did his best work. The Who was going into their late 30's. Keith himself was not ready to slow down, as evidence as how he died. I'm not a Keith basher, but to bash Kenny is just not right.

      Kenny is a fine drummer....I love his work with Small Faces/Faces.....and I've seen him with the Who many times from late 1970s until '82...I've seen them with Moon is the early-mid 1970s and Kenny is just different...in guitar player's lingo, he doesn't have the same tone a Keith....totally different vibe....my favorite band.

    Probably because of the fact that Townshend sings the other introspective, smaller pieces. But looking at the song and the roles the band members have on the album it is right that the lines are sung by Daltrey. In fact the song is a reference to the band itself, and it is the main character of the album seeing his favourite band (the who), but not recognizing them as the band he thinks they are. Towshend then is another part of the four personas of the main character taking over for a while.

    so who sings harmony with pete on that 2nd half of the bridge, starting "and on the dancefloor..."?
    great job whoever did. just wish they showed it on camera but i guess the focus needed to be on pete's expressive face for this part. no woodstock-style split screens for this raw footage, as great as it is and as grateful as i am for what we got...

He was deeply upset about the Cincinatti tragedy which happened a little more than two weeks prior to this gig. Have you seen the rest of the footage? "Won't Get Fooled Again", and "Baba O'Reilley" were full of drunken mistakes! As bad of as Pete was, this was still one of the Who's best performances, in my poinion!

    • @brianmcguire8485
      @brianmcguire8485 10 років тому +4

      Kenney was more of a snare heavy player whereas Keith seemed to play more on the toms and double kick. Also Kenney is more of a straight ahead drummer and a single kick drummer. Kenney is a great drummer and had been playing for decades, but it's hard to make a transition from your own style to another drummer's style. Especially one as unique as Moon. And he didn't want to try to copy Moon.
      I thought that he was a good fit (me and some of my Who fan friends have argued about that), but I can't think of anyone who could've done better or fit with the group better. Considering that Kenney had played half of the drums on the Tommy soundtrack, it seemed like a good idea. And he came from the same Mod scene that The Who had.
      This performance here and a sort of "Sparks" jam are the most tom fills I recall him ever playing during his tenure with them. And the solo in "Won't Get Fooled Again" (but still alot of snare in there too). So he did try to play what was supposed to be there.
      And I agree, the tempo here is quite a bit faster than it should be.

    • @brianmcguire8485
      @brianmcguire8485 10 років тому +2

      There's a video of them doing "Punk And The Godfather" as a soundcheck for Rockpalast which is still has slightly fast tempo (too fast for John to do his thing), but Kenney did a lot better on the fills for it.
      Pete sets the tempo with his opening chords. I don't know why he thought it should be faster, unless he still had Quadrophobia from the Quad tour.
