What a great performance. Roger was the real deal. Sang his heart out on this one. Who else could really sing Pete's strange, stirring songs like this?
Daltrey sings with every ounce of energy in his body
He was singing? I was distracted.
@@hannaj4032 Agreed.
@4:07 omfg
he always does
yea and he still sucks hahaha
The awesome intro is missing. Too bad!!
This song takes a lot of effort to perform correctly. They probably need a drink after.
They picked one of their hardest vocal songs...nailed it. Entwistle KILLING it on this song
And it's a half step higher than the studio version
Thunderfingers in action!
Entwhistle always killed it. The Ox was a freaking god.
They sure did…!!!!! Love this Group!! Best ever!!
And He’s extremely Great Eye Candy!! Roger!
The Who being announced by Jack Nicholson himself. Can't get more legendary than that.
He was in Tommy with him x
Jack was the side show. The WHO are the legends.
Fantastic 🎯🎯
So true.
Spot on
How classic can u get here 😎👌
Roger Daltrey sang at Monterey 1967, Woodstock 1969, Isle Of Wight 1970, Live Aid 1985 and Freddie Mercury Tribute 1992. Such a legend.
@@ぴな-z9q The one and only , I saw them in 2018 in Vancouver BC still awesome .

Hell ya! Cool cool rain…

With immense pleasure
Me❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Me ... again 👋👏👏👏👏
Great Version of this song. I just wish John Entwhistle and Keith Moon were still here to celebrate the Who's 50th anniversary with us.
Oh, my lord, his voice is amazing.
Live aswell !! Amazing guy & he wasn't no spring chicken in '85, either, was he ?!
@@vanman757 around 40
@@golf4ubacknine768 Was he, yeah ?! 🙂👍🏻
So’s the rest of him❤
Amazing performance. All-round band made of titans. Roger singing as if that was the last time he would do it, all the feeeling from his heart and all the energy from his body. This was glorious.
Enrique 1000% !
I thought the overall performance was mediocre and lacking in power.
@@HomeAtLast501 Entwistle was perfect as always, and Roger sung his heart out, probably one of his best performances ever. Kenney Jones is a great drummer but no Keith Moon, and Pete looked exhausted. Let’s call it a good performance with room for improvement lol.
Roger The Great
Lovely expression of this masterpiece and those performing it.🎉
Daltrey pulled that from his soul. Incredible version.
Yes!❤
OH LORD THAT BASS SOUND .. THE WHOLE BAND IS PHENOMENAL
nobody sounds like The Ox, his tones are really difficult to imitate, also his playing makes it even more impossible to emulate his sound
I'm amazed they did this out of the gate. Roger always likes this at the back end of a set as it rips his voice. You can hear it takes him a while to absolutely hit it. But considering 3 years of not playing together. Just wow.
They didn't. They opened with My Generation. Followed by Pinball Wizard, then Love Reign O'er Me and finally (of course) Won't Get Fooled Again. sweating
Whats Entwhistle have like 8 fingers on his right hand? Holy shit
yes.
It’s Jaco, Mononeon and John Entwistle . The holy trinity
Imagine, as a singer, walking out onstage and starting with this.
You'd have to be crazy to do that. Unless of course you're Roger Daltrey. But according to another post on here even he was hesitant at first. Good thing he eventually decided to do it.
Nooooooooo 😭😭🤣
This was the third song of the set. My Generation and Pinball Wizard preceded it. They closed with Won't Get Fooled Again.
Daltrey came out that day and chose violence.
What a voice. What a performance. That's without even mentioning Townsend and Entwistle
Who's the best rock group ? ... Who ! ... I mean who's the best rock-n-roll group ? ... Who ! ... the name of the best band ? ... Who ! ... I mean name the group that plays the best rock-n-roll ? ...Who is the best rock band ! ... Well why are you asking me for? ... I'm not asking you - I'm telling you, who is the best ! ... I'm asking you - who's the best ? ... That's the band's name ! ...
staggering.
the mighty Who ALWAYS deliver.
They kicked Zep's ass on this show. And I am a ZEPHEAD! I don't say that lightly.
Queen stole the whole fucking show guys😂🤷♂️
@@user-ck6bq5zf6k I’m pretty sure we everybody knows this.
@@sloooog Led Zeppelin wasn’t even that bad during the show.
Well, my favorite band is Led Zeppelin, because of their sound, their coolness and their songs are so good, that I can’t describe it! But on Live Aid they blamed theirselve!
@@sloooog,
you’re right mate!
I love this song! Roger Daltrey sure could belt out a tune like no other! (4:08)
Roger Daltrey is perhaps the most underrated singer of all time, perhaps because of the musicians who surrounded him. But he held his own, and more so...even in a crack band like THE FUCKING WHO.
One of the greatest voice of rock'n'roll.
I never tire of this performance! RD puts his heart and soul into this song.I only wish Loony Moony would have been there. “Talking’ bout my generation “ applies to this concert( in my early 20’s. One thing pandemic has done for me is make me appreciate all the awesome music from my youth. Great performance!!
Oh of Moon had been there, what a treat, he would have been heckling and being insane and stating things about why they were there every few minutes (for live aid) and all. He was insane but one can’t help but love that tornado of a man.
keith
Roger Daltry was amazing doing this live. He is an amazing performer. I got to see them play twice live. Smashed up against their huge amps. I couldn't hear fro days afterwards but they were amazing.Id love to hear Bono do a cover of this.
Sorry, Freddy. Roger stole the show this day.
Proof that more than just Queen showed up at Live Aid.
This song hits right in the soul
Funnily enough I was chatting about Live Aid was saying how I can remember the drizzle coming down when he was singing this. It really one of those hairs stand up on your arms moments.
Daltrey is a MONSTER! :)
He's a lovely boy.
This song is so perfect!
these are magicians not musicians. : o
Who else can wear a white unbuttoned shirt like Roger?
Ah, bè.... Jimmy Page 🔥🔥🔥 assolutamente!! Siamo su un altro pianeta.
Kenny Jones is a great drummer but Keith Moon really was Irreplaceable for the who's sound
~ Jones was good for the material Townshend wrote post Moon, but he just didn't do the Moon stuff any justice.
I saw the Who @ MSG 1979 and at the time I thought Moons death it might have been a publicity stunt we all know Keith Moon was crazy, and the newly released Who Are You album cover had Moon sitting in a reversed directors chair with the rest of the band behind him and on the back of the seat rest in writing says Not To Be Removed. Kenny Jones was his replacement and was very good as was the Who that night, but the reality is Moon was the greatest drummer on the planet he played his drums without a High Hat Orchestral Style. The only three drummers that came out of the 1960's era that you can say in the same breath as Moon would be Mitch Mitchell, Ginger Baker & John Bonham. During the song Who Are You Peter Townsend was jumping so high in the air and smashing his black Les Paul on the floor & catching it in mid air and he cut his arm opened wind milling and bled all over the stage and was taken off for stitches, and Kenny Jones did a few drum solo's and Roger Daltrey picked up a guitar and played a few cords until Townsend came back out.. If Moon was alive and playing the drums that night I think the Who would have destroyed every last thing on the stage -- Nothing Like The Good Old Days...
Bob Scoggin when I saw The Who here in Atlanta, there was a young man, surname Starkey.
Enough said.
We got to see one of the greatest British Bands on the planet, Yep Enough Said. Peace..
ZAK STARKEY KICKS ASS MAN! AND SO DID SIMON PHILLIPS!
Guys yes Roger is amazing but let's not forget the quiet one who wrote this incredible beautiful symbolic song of loves expression... legendary pete Townsend who wrote most of their catalog. 😱💗
Entwistle didn’t write this. It’s one of Pete’s
Did Pete ever finish that book he was writing??
Pete was one of rocks post laureates.
@@adamstockman5278Been out for years. That comment worked well. 😂 Idiot
Townsend is a epic songwriter... lyrically one of the best in music history. I always see him as the man behind the curtain although occasionally doing the wow in his extended guitar solos but he never takes Roger's glory away from the crowd.
The who is just so fine tuned and professional with all 4 of them knowing what to do and when.
Epic band they are legends.❤❤❤❤❤
This will always be my most favorite band of all time
The Who
Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, Kenney Jones, John Entwistle, John "Rabbit" Bundrick
Yes Jones was great but for christ sake Moooooon!!!!!!!
@@sukrame5331Obviously he ain’t no Moonie, but I’m just seeing Jone’s get some love. Incredible, under-appreciated drummer who got some undeserved hate from Who fans over the years. His drumming on ONGF remains some of my favorite of all time.
One of the hardest vocals of all time
Man Daltrey can wail amazing
People forget it wasn’t just Queen at live aid. Freddie couldn’t have sung this in a million years
First point, agreed. But Freddie can totally sing this song, well within his range and style especially the chorus.
Ian Gillian?
@@darbyheavey406 not in a million years. Gillan is an all time great though
@@calvin8935 Sure he could sing it, but not like Roger. He is a different type of vocalist
@@calvin8935 Nop, Freddie voice is baritone
the ox on bass pure gold, R.I.P. best version of this song i'v ever heard and it's live.BONUS.
the ox
This song is so amazing. I know Pearl Jam covered it and Bettye Lavette(sp) sang it at Kennedy Center Honors, but I can't imagine anyone who can pull this off like Daltrey. Possibly Patti Labelle? I'm biased because I'm a Who fanatic, but this song in my opinion is one of the greatest examples of pure talent alongside the best of the best. I may be old, but talent is ageless and this is raw talent at it's core.
U summed it up perfectly donna. Suffice to say there is only 1 WHO! And 1 ROGER DALTREY!
Meg myers is one chick I believe could beast this song
Eddie Vedder did an unbelievable job, Pearl Jam's cover is outstanding
This is ridiculously good!
Simply perfection. Never gets old.
Townsend said that Daltrey wasn't sure about the song, but once they'd had the discussion he absolutely leathered it, no reservations.
He sings it even better now. At 78, Roger Daltrey blows the roof off the dump every single time. I saw him Saturday at Bethel Woods in the Catskills -- the music streaming right up over the mountains, and the complete and utter joy on his face, the joy of performing at the top of his form. If you get the chance, go! This is the experience of a lifetime.
Roger Daltrey, at his best.
Only two words to describe Roger's voice - fucking killer!
No one can scream on pitch like Daltrey. Just amazing. Great performance.

Its interesting watching Pete, he always gives 100% loves it up there, yet he talks in interviews about hating going on tour with the boys etc, "these bunch of yobos" he says. Always take a pinch of salt with what Pete says normally. I love his antics on stage.
a hit from quadrophenia :)
why is no one talking about jack nicholson in the beginning ??
Jack don't sing.
Craig Anderson doesn’t
Craig Anderson He does in The Who movie Tommy!
Because you can't handle the truth!?
Daltry, just last night, called this his favorite song by The Who! I concur!
(Runner-up Behind Blue Eyes)
Roger said it started raining the moment he started his first chorus on this song that day.
Wish Keith Moon was there to see that spectacular day
Kenny Jones awesome. Underrated drummer for The Who
I think so too. He served his purpose with the WHO. But my favorite Kenny Jones is on the FACES song MISS JUDY'S FARM.
I find Kenny is in the same league with Moon, Bonham, Mitchell and Baker!!!
Entwistle fucking nailed it on this song
Always remembering listening to this as a teen
Growing up many many many many
Im not that old 😅🤣
Yrs after they brought the album out
But stil influenced a young generation
But now what do we have??
Not naming names as that be unfair to honest hardworking ppl trying to make it in music business
Its the commercial side
That needs to take brunt of it all
But hey hoo
Its moving with the times suppose
Gone but not forgotten rock classics bands shud be my hashtag lol 😄🎸🤪👍
Keith moon Was the Best Dummer For The Who ,but I like Zack Starkey is a great Dummer As well
For me at least, this was the best performance of the whole thing. Reign of me deserves to go down in history...
The Who and Clapton 💙❤
If you really want to hear his vocals… look Daltrey up on the Jay Leno show!!! AWESOME!! Blue eyes!
The keyboard player looks as though he,s had ten pints of bass in a straight glass..bloody brilliant..what a performance!!
First of all, Kenny Jones ROCKED that! Show his footage. Second. I want a body like Roger's.
in '77 this was "our" song....I didnt realize I was really in love with Roger.
Jack Nicholson introduces them too !! It couldn't have been better !!
One of The Greatest Groups In History Performing At One Of The Greatest Concerts ......... A Time A Music A World Which Was Amazing
Name any Band or Artist that can pull this song off... without Auto-Tune, LIVE!!!!!
Insanely great performance. Wow.
My throat hurts just watching Roger sing, yet he nailed every bit of it. What a vocalist.
I so agree! One of the best frontmeen of my life. ❤
Absolutely killed it
Only love can make it rain
The way the beach is kissed by the sea
Only love can make it rain
Like the sweat of lovers laying in the fields
Love reign o'er me
Love reign o'er me
Rain on me, rain on me
Only love can bring the rain
That makes you yearn to the sky
Only love can bring the rain
That falls like tears from on high
Love, reign o'er me
Rain on me, rain on me
Love, reign o'er me
Rain on me, rain on me
On the dry and dusty road
The nights we spend apart alone
I need to get back home to cool, cool rain
I can't sleep and I lay and I think
The night is hot and black as ink
Ooh God, I need a drink of of cool, cool rain
Love, reign o'er me
Rain o'er me, over me, o'er me, oh
Love reign o'er me
O'er me

THE WHO FOREVER! LONG LIVE THE WHO!
Roger Daltry still had it in 1985. Incredibly hard song to sing with the screaming and singing as well as the talking/singing. Beautiful..
I was there in the crowd that day, believe it or not it actually rained for a short while
Lovemaking with Words ⭐️❤⭐️
Bingo 😱😱😱😱😱❤❤❤❤❤
Wow! Just wow! A million times wow!
Jack Nickolson presenting them? amazing
What a fucking vocal performance!!! Do y’all hear this man?????
Daltrey is a god singer
Could you have imagined Keith Moon at this show?
Should have done more gigs after this. They were in great form!!
@Trick Of The Ox They didn't play together until 90's
They actually did their first tour after Live Aid in 1989, (the "25th anniversary tour" with Simon Phillips on drums), where they performed "Tommy" in its entirety.
They have toured fairly continuously since '96. They even toured afterward The Ox died in June of '02
@@TheAmarok87 I saw that tour. I’m talking 1985 as a five piece like this.
@@Twotontessie At the time, The Who we’re known for their inter band fueding as well as their music. Roger and Pete could barely get along and none of them really got along with Kenny Jones who replaced Keith Moon as drummer. By 1982, they had had enough of each other which is why they broke up Bob Geldoff, the organizer of Live Aid, said that trying to get them to reunite for this concert was like trying to get me man’s four ex~wives together.
That being said, around that time, Pete had written a song called After The Fire and gave it to Roger because he thought Roger could do the song justice, which Roger did.
Such a monster tune. The Who are so sick man. In Britain we are spoilt but The Who are right up there for me not far off Beatles level albeit diff genre. Stones and Zep cool too plus T Rex but just below imo. It depends on your mood though when you’re listening!
i always thought they stared with my generation??
I love the pain you can hear in his voice
God they are always awesome even to this day !
This is King Charles' favourite Who song...
Really? Than he is a man of great taste in music.
Rogers voice, what a powerhouse, wonderfull performance.
Offcourse this day will be owned by King Mercury, he blew up the stadium and perhaps everyone watching at home. Also very impressed by Bono that day, and David Bowie his untouchable preseance. But this band The Who, even without their beloved Keith, showed the world what an incredible band they were.
Fuckin A Right
Agreed, Mercury and Queen owned Live Aid. The Who put on such a good performance though, and Roger’s voice so powerful, it was like “We’ve been amazing for 20 years and don’t you forget it!” They’re still kicking ass even as they aged and lost Keith.
The Who had to crawl so that Queen could run.
the bass makes this the ultimate version of this song
Best song ever. LOOOOOOOOVE! RAAAIIIINNN ONNNN MEEEEEE!!!!!
Roger could never accept Kenny Jones even though he is a great drummer. It was Keith he missed.
Somewhat ironic as they often clashed when Moon was alive, once to the point that Roger knocked Keith unconscious as Daltry had a background in street fighting. Daltry was nearly thrown out of the band because he chided the band over drug use and excess..
Yeah... Shame there was no Moon the Loon !! 🌚 Moonie R.I.P.
this is one of the most beautiful lyrics ever written.

Funny how in 2017, Roger Daltry can hit the crazy high scream after the solo much better than he did in this 1985 performance...

This song is epic, and their sound on stage did not achieve that epic scale. They needed many more instruments backing them to achieve that epic proportion.
