Absolutely mind-boggling ly beautiful performance. Too many haters on this thread. Townsend is a master of the rhythm guitar, his Precision, his time in, his playfulness, the extraordinary level of funk, syncopation and beauty that he brings to this song in this performance is so sweet, so tenderhearted, so perfect. His playfulness onstage reminds me of an uninhibited child, so beautiful, so filled with joy, passion, and connectedness. To watch this performance is to watch the greatest not just music, but in being a person, searching for personal identity, firm meaning, for Joy, for everything but this performance represents! Thank you Pete Townshend, thank you The Who!
Armchair critics mate, one of the best bands in history. I'm 36 and wish I'd wake up in the late 50s to get the feel of what was about to kick off in Britian. Some of the best musicians ever seen just seem to explode and change music for the next 20 years. It needs to happen again. What we've got now is embarrassing.
Entwistle is monster player as always on this song. Kenney Jones said drumming for the Who was like drumming for two lead guitar players. Great song, great band and great muscians all around.
Pete was deep into the Brandy with this one. Kenney was great with The Small Faces and he did a workmanlike job coming into The Who. It wasn't an easy task.
The drummer is the time keeper. If the rest of the bands pushes the beat,it's not the drummer's fault. This is a brutal song for any drummer to really stay tight in.Alot is going on.I use to play this song with a cover band as a bassist. It's so much fun to get into.
"Can you see the real me ?" Very powerful lyrics with lots of food for thought. But was there ever a song by Pete and the Who that didn't have a strong message and an impact ...?!
The Faces and The Who were Mods, Jones was hired as much for their familiarity with him as much as anything..and really, who the fuck can replace Moon? Jones IS a damn good drummer. = Check out rod Stewart & The Faces live version of "I'm Losing You" ( yes its on youtube)
Kenny is a fine drummer, conventional, high hat/ snare driven,Keith if he even had one never used a high hat, Used the ride, we have been spoiled by Keith very unconventional, crazy fills, he may have come out of the womb with a pair of drum sticks, the who's sound changed forever. It was an experience to watch Keith play, glad youtube is here,i can not get enough of The Who at the Isle of Wight.

Kenney is a great drummer. Anyone who disbelieves should check out his solo on the Faces live version of I'm Losing You - here ua-cam.com/video/m4PXMCCTMwM/v-deo.html . However, Keith was Keith. Unorthodox, inimitable and irreplaceable.
I saw the Who at Wembley Stadium in the summer of 1979, AC-DC and the Stranglers. My mate Miggy was so stoned he faced the back of the stadium. I was OK, just on Thatchers cider before it went nation wide, cosmic, great times.
Thanks for posting. At age 16, I saw them in San Diego that year(1st time of many after) and I would assume they had the same set list. Great memory jog.
If I remember correctly, this was the very first time that they ever attempted this song with Kenney. That it was an unplanned encore that Pete picked out of nowhere, so Kenney was understandably a little bit lost on how to play it, but he managed to hold the down the beat. It's just strange not hearing those tom fills on the chorus. Kenney got better at throwing in tom fills the longer that he played with the band, but it was over by then. Pete was writing weaker material for the group and Roger didn't like Kenney because he didn't play like Keith. As far as John was concerned, he really liked both drummers.
Filling Keith's shoes is a really hard thing to do. I really liked Kenny Jones. They all sound sloppy in this version. But I believe that they were still recovering from the untimely death of one of the best drummers of all time.
THANK YOU! Townshend himself has said pointblank that he wasn't a fan of playing with Moon. He acknowledged his brilliance, but he wasn't a great drummer, technically. He was an amazing Keith Moon. (And before anyone jumps down my throat, I'm a Who fan for over 30 years.) Yes, the band wasn't the same without him, but when was the last time you listened to "Who Are You" and "Face Dances" back-to-back? Jones gives a better performance.
Loved this song as a kid, for the power and the sound of the guitar, but but now as an adult, and hearing the lyrics, it’s about mental health, a cry for help, and it friggin slays me.
@@LaughingStock_ get out.. hes very great. Listen to anything by the Faces and there it is. The die cast for him though, for in the Who he was always going to landed him opinions such as this. It aint right.
Kenny Jones is a shit hot drummer! Fair enough, he doesn't fit with the Who, but nobody could! Ginger baker, John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, best drummers of all time, but in any other band, they wouldn't fit
I saw them at capital centre in md. On this tour. At the end Pete Townsend said their last gig on the tour had been cancelled. So they were coming back to capital centre the next week to Finnish the tour. And tickets are on sale now. Everybody there bought tickets. It was sold out that night. We had some great seats. It was fucking great!
In this concert,, Roger as usual trying to give his best while at the same time watching Pete, not to loose it. This concert, and Chicago and Kampuchea, deserve to be released.
I really like Kenney and he put in some great performances, Live Aid for one when he carried the band. He did though tend to over rely on his snare drum with his Rick Buckler type fills.
Here's where you really see Moon's contribution to making the Who what they were. Not that Kenny Jones didn't do his best to fill such big shoes, but then again nobody could. Zach Starky is the only one that's come close.
Just 25 days after Cincinnati Riverfront Coliseum tragedy on 12/3/79. My brother was there. I was worried if he would return home in days before cellphones. My brother had his face pressed against the lobby glass windows. The force from crowd was so strong he got pushed straight thru turnstiles in lobby of Coliseum and still has his entire ticket. $12 reserved seat. Most were general admission which means the first people in got the best seats. Those tix were $9. Crazy tragic night. 11 died.
Saw them on this tour at MSG. It was Kenny Jones birthday. Pete was playing a black telecaster. I was shocked and not happy to see the horns. I remember they messed up the start of this song so it was hard to tell what was being played until the singing started. Was an amazing show nonetheless!
Thanx for saying what's always been on my mind. I never blamed KJ for the last 3 years of The Who, which in hindsight were not bad at all. In fact, they are classic compared to a lot of new bands at their peak, if you can even call it that. Townshend was going thru some incredibly hard times in his personal and professional life between 78-82. He still managed to put out some great songs in this period. Most musicians would have collapsed trying to deal with half of his problems.
The OX always tore it up on this one this and 5:15. By the way the Les Paul is hanging in the Hard Rock Tampa! Glad he didn't smash it's a gorgeous guitar!
Before the Kenny bashing starts, his best skill was business. After Keith died r.i.p. ,the band were so devastated that they made Kenny a full member of The Who. When they tired of him Roger mainly, they had to give him millions (and Millions) to unravel his contract. Poor old Kenny, a great drummer, with even greater attorneys! Still love ya though KJ, and your new helicopter!!
Bass is barely audible too...which makes this song (musically) pointless imo. Throw in Jones' style (very straight ahead), and this version suffers mightily.
I heard Townshend state in an interview, that he did not like keith moons style of drumming at all, i mentioned this to someone and they just said the was not really a drummer, my views on this are neautral, i myself will not criticise anybody, i could not do it to save my life! by the way i was a great admirer of the small faces as well as the who and cboth have their unique styles of playing, i to admire kenny jones musicienship!

Pete destroyed a Les Paul at the end of their first gig with Kenney at the Rainbow. There's photos but I've never heard it...it's probably here somewhere :)
The Who have been blessed with some great drummers but how can you replace Keith Moon it's not just is drumming he was a natural drummer but he was a huge personality for the group and he defined it.
Reg Isadore, Robin Trower's original drummer was a powerhouse drummer when playing live. Like Moon he was a beast who's style, like Keith's was to ATTACK the drums vs. just playing them. But l think he may have predeceased Moon.
