As a teacher, my advice would be to ask your teacher if you can volunteer to care for the class pet! I don't know any teacher that wouldn't be thrilled to have a student be involved. In regards to changing substrate, perhaps you share that you want to upgrade the enclosure with new surroundings and enrichment. Then provide a local store with your preferred product. This way it won't feel overwhelming for the teacher if they know exactly what to get and where.

Or people just shouldn't get animals if they're not gonna care for them. My sister had seen a fellow teachers class guinea pig that was living in terrible conditions. Uncleaned, dark, cheap food. She pretty much just took it and by that time it was blind and deaf, but supposedly not all that old.

Apparently we need a new saying to remind people not to eat their pets:
    *Pets are friends, not food*
We also had pets in the class during first grade. But they weren’t pets in the long run. Basically we went to a farm on a field trip and our teacher said that we were actually gonna bring a few eggs back to the school to learn about the process of a chicken hatching from an egg. And unlike other pets, they weren’t neglected. The complete opposite, actually. We kept constant watch over them making sure they were at the right temperature as we learned about how an incubator works. And when they finally hatched out as chicks, we got to pet and name them and sent them back to the farm.

We did this too, but with ducks. In elementary school my teacher took us to a park where there were some duck eggs left all alone for the entirety of our day. She asked the park manager about them and he said that the mother was actually hit by a car in the parking lot the day previously or something. We took the eggs with us and learned how incubation worked, hatched the eggs and when they were old enough we gave them back to the local park. It was so cool

I used a reptifogger (I think? That was the name?) to help my ancient rescue ball python with one good nostril recover from her RI. I had it going on a schedule. When it turned on, I noticed she went into the mist and raised her nose up. Idk if she was just curious but the way she sat there with her head in the mist made me think it was offering some relief. She's all good now so I removed it, but thought I'd mention it as part of the mist/no mist debate. My personal opinion is as long as things are clean, humidity doesn't go too bonkers, and it's not running all the time ... It's probably fine?

    • @thetwistedsamurai

Thank you for the review!! I’m going to pat myself on the back for the 4/5 stars at 9:38, considering it is my first bioactive enclosure. I’d also like to throw out there that the fogger is on a timer and only runs for about 10 minutes twice a day, and it is a 55 gallon aquarium so it definitely aids in keeping the enclosure at a nice 55-60 percent humidity while still having the ability to amp it up for sheds, and also is able to dry out enough during the day to ward off scale rot. Thank you again, I’ve been waiting six months for this and am very happy with the outcome of the review!

    • @TheNativeLeopard
      @TheNativeLeopard 3 роки тому +10

@@nightinggale6470 Kaa was about 6 months at the time of this post, and in no way was this meant to be his “final enclosure” but more of a temporary enclosure meant only for him to inhabit up to his first year. In addition to this, a 55 gallon enclosure is definitely more narrow but wide enough for a snake of his size being that Kaa is younger. As far as humidity goes, I used 60 percent as a baseline for the entire tank but he has other areas that are more humid in the tank as well ( these being 3 out of the 5 hides provided). Out of his hide selection, three of them have sphagnum moss and are sprayed daily, ensuring that there are options for him to go into a more humid area as needed. I must also add that he is being kept in a smaller environment to ensure precise optimal conditions for him being that his previous owner caused him to have an inflamed vent through force feeding and scale damage through premature sexing. His condition was so severe that after 3 months of syringe feeding my vet gave up on him and suggested that I do the best I could but she believed he would not make it another week. Alas, here he is defying the odds and already in a bigger tank than the one showed in this video, although I do appreciate the additional info though!

My HS biology teacher kept an octopus, as a student in the AP science classes I got to help over the summer for extra credit, so I was there when he set the thing up. I got to see the octopus from a baby to adult life, to its death (they only live for about a year). When it died the teacher cooked it in the biology lab inside a glass beaker. It smelled really good actually, but none of us ate any of it. The teacher ate it instead. 30 minutes later in class he turned green, started vomiting and passed out, and had to be revived with smelling salts.
Don't eat animals that died of natural causes. RIP whoever ate that crayfish.

I appreciate this person is somewhat concerned for their snake, they look like they're on a tight budget hence the straps, but it's a good sign that they know to secure the lid. There's always room to grow your enclosure and the tools you care for a reptile with, but if you're unable to identify what needs to be done that's the bigger issue. Nice to see someone who at least understands basic pitfalls and hopefully they'll be open to learn more and make the enclosure better as time goes on.

My high school science teacher killed sooo many class pets. It was so sad. He had a beautiful ball python, and one day stuck a live rat in her enclosure before a school break (I guess to hold her over until we would return) She had always been fed crickets, and frozen MICE. I told him to please remove the rat, as the rat would likely harm the snake. He laughed it off and pretty much chalked up my concern to not wanting the rat to be killed. When we came back to school, the rat had started eating the snake. She was covered in rotting wounds and died from infection. There were SEVERAL others but that one stuck out the most to me because I was really attached to her, as I personally helped care for her. After her there were the poison dart frogs he let starve to death… and then left them dead and rotting in the enclosure. I eventually went to the principal and showed him pictures of all the dead animals and told him of the straight up neglect they were enduring and my teacher was banned from bringing in any more animals.

would love a review that's just like, teacher's set ups for animals. I always thought my bio professor in college was super cool, and I didn't know as much about reptile back then. but now thinking about it.... maybe have a full grown tegu in a 120gal, 2 bps in a 40 gal together, and a 6ft boa in a 120 gal was pretty shitty. at least the tegu got to wander the room a lot. I know the BPs got given to a student who wanted them eventually. I ended up taking his tarantula which was in an alright enclosure.
also I have a coworker who took a course in college that was teaching the students how to be science teachers. and I shit you not, one assignment was literally to go out and buy an animal to be the class pet in the future. my coworker ended up getting a nile monitor at a reptile show, not knowing what the fuck it was, then it died. i can only imagine that's how it ended for most the other people as well. to my coworker's credit, he tried his best once he learned what it was and feels awful about it, I'm not mad at him. Just the professor for giving such a stupid assignment, and the vendor who was selling cheap nile monitors to literally anybody.

With foggers, I do think you should run it for a few minutes max and maybe on a lower setting. My BCC seems to like his fogger, he goes right up to it and licks the densest fog while it's going, plus he does not like being sprayed. It is much stronger than spraying which is nice for a large enclosure. Once I accidently did too much a couple times in a row and he got minor scale rot (literally 10 scales and went away with a couple simple chlorhexadine treatments) so do be careful.

I owned 25 proven pairs of lizards back in the 90s.... until a series of tragedies forced me to give them to good friends who already had set ups. At any rate, I also had custom cages for my animals that were 150 gal. glass enclosures, sliding glass doors, vita lights, an area for basking, lots of Manzanita branches to climb and all kinds of hides that I built with red bricks. (This whole long story does have an ending, I promise) Because I invested so much time toward the care of my animals, it would give me a panic attack to see pictures of improperly set up enclosures. Unfortunately there are people who have good intentions, however they haven't invested the time necessary to study their pet's husbandry and care. I loved helping people improve their herps living quarters, however I still have a feeling of panic and dread, when I see photos of improperly set up enclosures, or lack there of! I'm not sure why I have that emotional response, other than I so desperately want to help them immediately, and I worry for the animal's health and comfort. I suppose it all boils down to the fact that I'm weird. 🤭
Do you ever see these enclosures and feel this "worry" for the animals, and want to help the owner right away?
I believe your videos are a great way to get valuable info across to owners, so that they can make improvements on their own. I commend you for taking time to help, and I love this video idea! It's definitely productive content and you'll never have a lack of photos of owner's cages that need improving upon!
    Take care,
beary, Zeke 🦜 and BeBe 🦜 macaw 🤗🤗
