I have a WIFI thermostat, really like it, I can set the dual probes to go off if the temp is high or low and adjust in the app accordingly if I'm home or not. Also have a hot and cold probe with temp and hygrometer that're wireless and send alerts, as well as a couple of "home security" cameras pointed at the tank from different angles. Even if I'm not home I can visually check the tank and adjust the thermostat as needed (honestly happens very rarely). I've got a wifi window AC unit in the room as well as a self draining dehumidifier, so I can adjust the room accordingly even if I'm at work or watching a movie, it's pretty nice. Recently though I discovered deep heating projector lamps, but they should be on dimming thermostats :( I found a couple in Europe with two temp probes and two outlets like I have on my current setup, great app... but for the USA? Nothing like that. I think maybe herpstat makes a really jank wifi software that looks more like linux open source router software for like $250 lol... but even just comparing the equipment in the USA vs Europe we're a half decade if not a decade behind the equipment available over there. It's crazy how slowly good information and products reach the US market for reptiles.
It’s definitely more common for leopard geckos to choose a corner to poop in all the time, but it does seem to happen in some other reptiles. I’m not sure how common it is, but my bearded dragon has a corner that he always poops in.
@@bethanylouise8534 I think it's animal personality leos are generally calmer so maybe theyr generally cleaner. And I have 3 cats 1 is extremely messy and will drag stuff into the litterbox , one kicks litter and plays with it, and the other is extremely clean. My only Leo I had never used a poop corner I wish she did lmao
I managed to train my first Iguana to go to black construction paper that I kept in most corners of the house. The iguana I have now, I rescued it, he is just terrified of me of food of his own poop he has some ptsd....
For leopard geckos, once they establish their "bathroom", I put down a paper towel there, and it makes cleaning up poop really simple. It also makes it more simple to do poop checks for health.
My brother owns a leopard gecko and I can confirm, those %30 of leopard geckos are lethal. Overall he’s a pretty chill gecko but when it comes to feeding time, he is very very aggressive you definitely gotta be careful.
everytime i try to put insects in my leopard gecko's food dish he always mistake my fingers as a worm and bite me it doesn't hurt but i always get startled everytime
I thought it was so weird when my gecko was just constantly sitting in her humid hide! I'm glad someone mentioned to me that some geckos just love their humid hide and stay there a lot. I thought she was sick (or going to become sick) because she was doing that, but it turned out that it was just where she liked to sleep or hang out during the day. To this day, she hasn't had any signs of an upper respiratory infection or impaction so I guess she knows what she's doing.
@@luvmypolly Not always, my humidity is at the right levels for my gecko and they still choose their humid hide over the other two and has done that since the day I brought them home🤷🏻♀️ Leopard geckos don’t need that much humidity, most rooms are usually humid enough to naturally keep their enclosure at the right level.
My gecko would poop in his humid hide and shed on every hide but that one... lol. Eventually had to take it out because it was getting hard do clean. I guess they're all just weird.
@@luvmypolly I mean, I use a digital hygrometer, and the humidity was within the recommended amount - I forget what it actually was. But I tried misting down the substrate to increase the humidity in the enclosure but she still preferred the humidity box.
Actually the term crepuscular for Leo's is outdated. Now they're cathemeral ( basically they're out whenever they want ). Honestly idk if next year they'll change the name lol :)
My leopard gecko is more hyper than me and I have ADHD. She sees my hand and sprints to run up it, proceding to try to fly through the sky. I'm very glad I got her a large enough tank for her to run around in, and she has plenty of things to keep her entertained. I plan to get her some more toys soon. Hopefully she'll calm down when she's older... She's currently 6 months. I'm also considering upgrading her fron her 40G to a 75G, if she doesn't mellow out by the time Petco has another $1 a gallon sale.
@@Starstruck_Seven it happens every few months, so just check their website every so often. The $1 sale only goes up to a certain size, but the bigger ones will still be on a dramatic sale. I know the 75G is part of the $1

It's so weird, I've always heard that a 20 gallon long is the minimum size for a leopard gecko. I've got four and they all seem just fine in their twenty gallons. I'm usually awake the same times they're awake and I don't really see them acting stressed or cramped. They mainly just switch hides and beg for food lol More space is always better but at a certain point it's just excessive. I don't even know what my leo would do with sixty gallons worth of space lol
just like with tarantulas people will shame spider owners for keeping them in "tiny" enclosures when literally tarantulas will just sit in the same spot for weeks so there's no point of giving them huge enclosures that they're not going to use or appreciate
I think it really depends on what you put in the enclosure for them. A 60 gallon that only has 20-30 gallons' worth of good hides/enrichment isn't going to be as fun or comfy for a leopard gecko as a fully tricked-out 20+ gallon enclosure with full coverage. Huge amounts of empty space can be stressful for captive animals IFAIK b/c it shows there's a huge part of their provided environment that doesn't offer any protection or shade. That can be terrifying for an animal that's so small!
13:44 This point I totally agree, I got a hognosee for my first time snake, and a lotta people tend to say that they are not recommended as a first snake. but I have learned so so much owning what some consider a difficult species, and while we are still working on a few issues (manily not eatting unless its in his mouth), I feel like I've learned a lot more than I would have with an 'easy' snake like a corn or something. idk its just how I think
hognoses are so cute, I was considering to get one as well but ended up going for a ball python. I think I read somewhere that hognoses don't strike food unless it's scented with toad/frog.
I like the reaction videos. I put my baby leopard gecko in a 10 gallon tank and he out grew it in 2 months. He would get irritated and start tail wagging at nothing and wanted to explore but didn’t have anywhere to go, which was weird because he is incredibly chill. I upgraded him to a 20 gallon and gave him some things to climb on and I haven’t seen him tail wag since
You said that your leo not only shows the important signs of stress if its unhappy with its enclosure but is now NOT showing signs of stress in the 20gal. I appreciate the advice from the other dude, and bigger is always better, but it sounds like he’s happy in the 20 gallon. You sound like you know what you’re doing and what to look for :)
@@nightinggale6470 it really all depends on your gecko. Mine doesn't like moving even if I take her out. I've seen some who love exploring. But yeah the bigger the better.
I have two leopard geckos each in a 55 gallon tank. I did have a 23 gallon but got ABSOLUTELY ATTACKED on social media about that being WAY too small... hearing people recommend a 10 gallon is really horrible- glad that you can put him right
A twenty gallon long is perfect for an adult considering they’re not really climbers. They don’t need the height that much and my adult female Leo is very comfortable in hers. Anything extra is a plus but as long as they’ve got decent roaming room it’s fine. 23 gallons is a good size.

My daughter's leopard gecko and mine are super different in how their personalities are 🤣🤣 mine is relatively easy to hold and I work with her on that so she will be handle-able as she gets older. She also hides all the time and doesn't want to be seen. She sneaks out to her cool side at night to poop 🤣🤣 my daughter's gecko gets really adventurous at night and wanders all around his enclosure and perks up when he hears her talking. He's funny. Way more social but she doesn't really hold him.
my two geckos are similar! my youngest one ( almost 2 years) is very hyper and always runs to the glass when he hears me talking or sees my hand. my other (just turned 3) is very calm, always hides, doesn't like to be seen, and only comes out when it's his feeding time lmao
Mine is like your daughter's. I can't hold her at all, she's too much of a flight risk. I can scratch her under her chin and pet her back, but she will quickly grab hold of my finger and try to run up my arm, so she can fly off my shoulder. I lover her, but gosh is she a handful. If she wakes up and sees me in the room while the lights are on, she will start glass surfing to get me to come play. She has no other reason to do so. She has plenty of space, hiding spots, toys, and gradient spots. It is useful in checking her tummy, though. I plan to upgrade her from a 40G to a 75G soon. She just really needs more play space.
Them having different personalities is so true. I have three. One of them is a sweet little old man, one of them is going through her emo teenager stage, and the other one is an insane megalomaniac that is planning my ultimate demise and world domination.
I think shelf lining is pretty good for a flooring. It’s cheap, there isn’t any holes depending on which one you get, they’re soft, and they come in cool designs. They’re also REALLY easy to clean. You just take it out and wash it off and you’re basically done.
It’s good for beginner owners who aren’t comfortable with loose substrate yet but geckos LOVE to dig. Also needs to be replaced pretty often because it can easily grow bacteria:)
I'm glad my geckos not the only crazy one 😂 I've had him 11 years and he is always planning his escape. Jumping off my hand and biting, escaping his tank. He was lost for 3 months and somehow lived on all the store in his tail. He's nuts but I live him ❤
8:04 this is so true but colder enclosures actually work so much better. I once thought to myself that her enclosure might be a bit too cold because I was only just above the minimum at 84, but when I upgraded to 87 it turned out that she immediately changed her sleeping place to the cool side and only came out very late at night when the temperature dropped significantly. After a while I noticed that she really avoided the warm side so I put her old lamp back in and everything was back to normal.
I’ve had my leopard gecko for 5+ years now. My sister had wanted one, so we went to good ole petco and got one and when you say those things screech boy do you mean it 😂 I was shocked though, mainly because mine had never made a noise even close to that, let alone a noise at all.
Depending on the season Rosy Boas are either (typically) cerpescular or nocturnal, but if the environment is right they will come out at really any time. That's a great way for me to know her parameters are really good, if I see her out at 11am or 4pm I know she's content and just exploring or looking for food. It makes sense, being from the desert, that they prefer evenings or nights to come out at a good temperature, but since her tank is highly regulated and I don't do day/night cycles she just emerges when she's feeling like it.
When my leopard gecko was younger his 10 gallon was 20 inches long and 10 inches wide. Considering that now hes 9 inches long it's good I bumped him up to 40 gallons rather than keeping him in a space where the side walls were only as long as he was lol. I can never see how someone can see an adult in that space and go "yeah hes good, lotsa room to wander"
I have 2 leopard geckos, one wants me dead and the other could care less, I was given both of them and they're both given amazing care and lots of love, but like he said, they have different personalities

My leopard gecko is decently chill, but she definitely has her moments. I just bought her a new 20 gallon with front opening doors that will hopefully be a simple bioactive setup! She will either love it or hate it, there will be no in between...
A warning I found when I plopped my baby into a bioactive, if they don't eat for a while after or only eat small amounts, they are probably snacking on the isopods. I was freaking out when she wasn't eating, but she wasn't losing weight. Then I saw some isopods crawl out of the ground after the lights went out, and she hunted them down. They are safe for them, so just don't panic, as long as your gecko stays a healthy weight.

my personal experiences on the topics covered here (my first leo and reptile ever, definitely not my last): mine has a relatively calm nature, but i haven't used much exposure therapy on him so he doesn't like being held too much. other than that he chills most of the day. My leo has a like... a little over 1 foot height, 1 foot width, a little over 2 feet length tank. just by his size when i changed from 10 gallon (more of an aquarium) to the 20 gallon (reptile tank with doors) i could tell he was happier with the space. he loves to roam to about 5-6 different spots throughout the day and night. he loves his mealworms, thankfully. i was scared he would get bored of them, but not yet. he does his business in the very back right corner which i have to get past a hide, branch, and hammock to get to. i think he's evil. i cleared the moss out from there just so it would be easier to pick up. i use packed dirt with dried moss on top as substrate. maybe controversial, i'm not sure. i wouldn't recommend it when you first get your lizard. they can be unpredictable so you want to make sure they won't randomly bite at the ground thinking its food or miss food completely and eat the floor. my leo is very coordinated, so i have no trouble. though, i think he finds the moss comfortable, he's always laying on it. i wouldn't recommend reptile carpet either because they easily build up harmful bacteria and a lizard's claws are able to get stuck and possibly rip. just my opinion. i found that a small undertank heater on the warm side and a ceramic heat emitter are the best combo, especially if your household likes to run on the colder side. this makes the warm side about 80 degree Fahrenheit and the cold side about 60, which is good. make sure that the spot on the tank, where the heat pad is, is a suitable temperature for your lizard to stand on (after substrate is put in). they burn easily. though, they are fairly smart. if everything is in the correct place, one they are familiar with the tank, they will know when and where to go to regulate their body temps. mine is actually more on the nocturnal side. he usually starts doing his nightly routine at 10 or 11 pm, which last who knows how long into the night. by 5 or 6 am he'll be back in his hide, sleeping. the heat emitter that i use 24/7 is a purple night light. it's blocked out by a three of his hides, so he has pitch black places to go. he seems content with this setup. thank you to anyone who read this far. i hope it may help someone who is a new reptile owner. when i first got him, i was stressing out about every little thing and almost made myself sick from worry, but it all turned out good. if you worried like me and did research as much as i did, then you're probably going to be a good reptile owner and i wish you luck. i think you'll care for your little friend just fine.
I remember when I got my second leopard gecko, and he was still a baby damn that thing would SCREAM. It didn't really scare me, as expected if they were hardly handled or are still babies i'd be scared as shit if something much bigger than me was trying to handle me.
The calm nature is suuuuuuch a stretch I got a pair geckos from a breeder (they had different parents) and one was the most mellow gecko I've ever handled his girlfriend on the other hand was very territorial and hated being handled so I'm glad you pointed out not all geckos are mellow right in the beginning
My mother Has had her Leopard Gecko for 11 years and still has it in a 10 gallon, I've told her a few times it should be in a larger tank, but she always says it "looks" happy. I mention it to a care specialist at our local reptile shop and they tell her it should be in a larger tank, mom goes " Huh I never knew", and proceeds to not upgrade it.
Tell her that surviving is not thriving. A human could live in a closet and look happy and healthy but that is no life for anyone. A 10 gallon for a leopard gecko is cruel. You can't fit three hides in there along with a water dish and still have room for your gecko to move around. There's no temperature gradient and they can't thermo regulate when they're half the size of the enclosure.
To be clear about color lights, leopard geckos specifically have cones in their eyes for green and blue, but not red or yellow. A red light is dimmer, so they do indeed see less light. They cannot see red like some other reptiles can. Red lights are still inferior to using the no-light method or a simple dim room light (ambient light rather than direct light, not for heat but for the simulation of moonlight). And their low light vision is also excellent, so what seems dim to us may be far brighter to them.

I bought an abused Rosy Boa a year ago, her medical conditions were too severe to save her sadly. It was my first snake and she was very sweet, never snipped or got defensive once, but she was a relatively old adult when I got her. Fast forward to her passing, I still wanted a Rosy Boa so this time I did a lot more vetting of the seller and got a neonate from a reputable source. I should have known lol... oh man. In the photos he sent of her she was in strike position, in EVER photo. The guy had 3 others for sale, none of the other snakes had such defensive posture... turns out she is one spicy shoe string. Either me or my wife handles her as often as possible, which honestly since she eats once a week only leaves a few days each week. She strikes a lot less, has never actually bitten, but yeah, nothing like the other Rosy Boa. They always say how calm they are, but I can tell you first hand that's not a guarantee... some of it is her age, but I think even when she's 10 or 15 she'll still be sassy. You can just see it in her eyes xD
My little cousin had a leopard gecko before I got one. She told me it ALWAYS screams at them so they never handle him. Lol I felt bad. Mine is pretty chill. The poop corner is great for clean up. I reeeeealllly wish crested geckos did this.

Cricket horror story time- I keep my reptiles in my room , as I still live with my parents. I got little crickets from a local reptile shop . I was transferring them from the bag to the small container I was going to keep them in until I needed them for my reptiles. Well as I was dumping them in 5-10 tiny crickets fell on the floor and before I could get them they all disappeared under my dresser. I started bawling right then and there and didn’t sleep in my room , and used bug killer . Never did that again .

my lil man herby is so damn calm he must be smokin that herb when i'm not around. at first he was lil skirmish but as time went on lil man learned to adapt to my gf and I and our dogs seem to not bother it to much. the barking makes him hide tho haha

I'm so happy that my daughter's leopard gecko went off crickets. He used to love them but they're so annoying to keep and they die if you look at them. One day he just decided he hated them and I was like, me too buddy. These days he's all about the roaches. He flip flops between dubias and red runners, but they're both pretty cool imo
Oh and he's taken the next step from pooping in a corner: he figured out if he holds it in until we let him out, he can poop on our clothes and keep his room clean. Kinda gross but kinda convenient, and definitely better than when we discovered he'd been secretly climbing up his vine and hiding his poop near the ceiling which was both impressive and hella nasty
Okay, I have a question. I have my leopard gecko in a 20 gal with three hides, one on the warm side, middle, and cool side. I have a heat mat on the warm side, and rocks that get warmed up by a heat lamp. I also set up a hammock near the top of the tank close to the lamp because I noticed he would always try and be up high. Now, he spends almost every single day up on this hammock basking under the heat lamp. Is this normal? Is there something I'm not doing right?
You have to careful when buying thermostats I recently bought a exo terra thermostat 600W thermostat but didn’t realize that there are two versions and I bought the wrong one (they have one with a dual and one with a single receptacle) You also have to consider how you want to heat the enclosure heat mat/cable/strip can use on/off, dimming or pulsing thermostats, heat lamps need a dimming thermostat and ceramic heat emitters need a pulsing thermostat.
@@nightinggale6470 CHE’s can be damaged and have a shortened lifetime when used with a on/off thermostats. Dimming thermostats can also be used but pulse is preferable when using a CHE.
@@nightinggale6470 Sometimes you don’t really have a choice I have a pacman frog and the only heating source that can get its enclosure up to 28°c safely, without emitting more light and without heating up the substrate from below is a CHE.
@@nightinggale6470 Its a planted bioactive enclosure with a 2.5% UVB t5 tube so adding a heat lamp would make it far too bright and having no heating at all lessens its appetite and makes it go into brumation (like it was doing for the last 4 months)
Me Leo is a 6 year old girl and shes lived in a 20 gallon all her life. She's getting upgraded to a 30 gallon viv soon, and I'm super excited. We use a ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat for heat. Do you think that's good enough to the bigger tank? Or should I start looking into other options?
@@nightinggale6470 thank you! I would like to add that along with the CHE she also has a uva/uvb bulb separately. I'm actually not 100 percent on the size of the new tank since its second hand and I haven't measured it. My best guess is between 30 and 40 gallons and its pretty tall. I'll look into getting a halogen flood bulb and a dimmer if you think thats best.

I got my first leapord gecko 2 weeks ago, and so far it's pretty chill. I say it because it's pretty young and I haven't been able to tell if its male or female. But yea I got very lucky. Easy to feed and getting used to me pretty fast.
I have a reptile hammock that my leopard gecko poops on. Not what it was meant for, but it’s great that I don’t have to change the paper towel as often. I just clean the poop off, and take out the hammock to wash once a week
What moss would you recommend for their humid hide? My gecko stays in the one hide majority of the time cause it gets the darkest but I’m not sure what to do for the humidity part
You can buy moss specifically for reptiles, it’s usually dehydrated and you soak it in water. Don’t use moss from outside because there’s a chance you’ll bring pesticides/chemicals into your geckos enclosure. Edit: Changed some info based on a comment about paper towels below
I'd been feeding my Leo exclusively superworms for the last 6-8 months and she was fine until last month. She got a mild case of impaction, and that's the only thing that she would have ingested. I gave her a couple warm soaks and it cleared up, but from now on its just crickets and the occasional small mealworm for her.
My geck has like a 30 gallon long and she barely uses all that space, I change up the placement of the decorations and hides 3 times a year for enrichment and sometimes she likes a hide in a particular place so much she stops coming out of that hide until I change it up again
Hey man, what do you do for cold/warm/hot side temperatures in tank for day 36L 18W 16T tank? Currently I got a 100w heat emitter on the cold side. UVB build on-top in the middle and a 150w bulb on the hot side. The tank is rough 78 cold side and 95 hot side. Any tips would be great thanks! Edit- I do have a heat pad underneath a hide on the cool side. I live in Canada and it's winter time. I just want to make sure the temperatures are correct.
Honestly I wouldn’t use any heat on the cool side, my tank stays at the perfect temp with my heat emitter being on the hot side:) It’s supposed to be a temperature gradient, they go to the cool side to get away from direct heat. Just make sure you have a thermometer on both sides (with the probe placed in the middle of the tank, slightly lower to the ground) to monitor. I personally don’t let the hot side go above 92°, because that is reaching maximum temp (95°) and the cool side I don’t let get lower than 74°. Hope this helps:) I think you could go down to one heat emitter on the hot side and have the perfect temps!

I currently don’t have the funds to order a DHP online or halogen bulbs (we don’t have any at any of my local petstores as I’ve already tried to find some) geckos aren’t huge baskers anyways and my gecko is still young so he prefers to stay in his hides during the day. I was sharing my experience and what I’d recommend them to do, not everyone has easy/quick access to those products. My gecko is healthy and happy so I’m not too worried as this lighting/heat situation is temporary and won’t be a forever thing.
I can confirm. My First Leo, Blep, is a sweetheart who loves to snug up into my beard. My second Leo, i have dubbed him Sir Caliente, Lord of Spice, because he is ANGR. He aint even big enough to be sure hes male, but with a temper like that, either hes Sir Calienta, or Lady Hellfire.
I work at a ✨pet store✨ and we have a juvenile leopard geck right now that is an absolute lunatic. If I put my hand in his enclosure he screams and tries to bite me. They most definitely are not all chill.
When i was given my gecko he was living in a 10 gallon tank and had been for 4 years. I felt horrible for him, he had almost no room to move around and his only source of heat was a heating pad under the tank where his hiding cave was. she said he was a loner and wasn’t very active. Like no shit, he didn’t have room to be active and his only warmth was in his cave. I spent $300 in two days preparing a 30 gal i closure for him and he’s been way more active in the time I’ve had him
My leopard gecko seems to be having trouble shedding his skin. Majority of the dead skin is off, but he has a few spots on his face and body. Is is ok to peel is off for him?
I got lucky that I got my leopard gecko from an owner who was taking care of them before they had some life changes and decided to rehome, so my guy enjoys handling and will come up to me when I open his tank lol. I hate crickets they're too jumpy and crazy and I'm worried about them escaping in the bio lmao. But he loves his crickets the most lol
Undertank heaters for geckos like leopard I noticed works best because the heat helps them digest. And the thinnest part of their body is their belly. It helps regulate heat. A night heat immitter works fine too. Sorry about spelling im stoned and dyslexic and idc lmao
@@nightinggale6470 yeah that works too lol I've never had an issue with heat mats connected to thermostats and I've kept many kind. Reptiles that need more I use overhead and something both under and over depending on the species. Lots of different info out there. Just gage the reptile to their needs. I've been keeping for years and know a few exotic specialists but hey each reptile is different and lots of different correct methods too. But definitely not a one size fits all thing

My leo's are each in their own 55 gal and over 2 years they have literally only used half of their space. I would think 20 gal would be pretty close to what they would 'need' while being big enough to truly have a warm side / cool side.

I have a WIFI thermostat, really like it, I can set the dual probes to go off if the temp is high or low and adjust in the app accordingly if I'm home or not. Also have a hot and cold probe with temp and hygrometer that're wireless and send alerts, as well as a couple of "home security" cameras pointed at the tank from different angles. Even if I'm not home I can visually check the tank and adjust the thermostat as needed (honestly happens very rarely). I've got a wifi window AC unit in the room as well as a self draining dehumidifier, so I can adjust the room accordingly even if I'm at work or watching a movie, it's pretty nice. Recently though I discovered deep heating projector lamps, but they should be on dimming thermostats :( I found a couple in Europe with two temp probes and two outlets like I have on my current setup, great app... but for the USA? Nothing like that. I think maybe herpstat makes a really jank wifi software that looks more like linux open source router software for like $250 lol... but even just comparing the equipment in the USA vs Europe we're a half decade if not a decade behind the equipment available over there. It's crazy how slowly good information and products reach the US market for reptiles.
It’s definitely more common for leopard geckos to choose a corner to poop in all the time, but it does seem to happen in some other reptiles. I’m not sure how common it is, but my bearded dragon has a corner that he always poops in.

And I have 3 cats 1 is extremely messy and will drag stuff into the litterbox , one kicks litter and plays with it, and the other is extremely clean. My only Leo I had never used a poop corner I wish she did lmao

I managed to train my first Iguana to go to black construction paper that I kept in most corners of the house. The iguana I have now, I rescued it, he is just terrified of me of food of his own poop he has some ptsd....
For leopard geckos, once they establish their "bathroom", I put down a paper towel there, and it makes cleaning up poop really simple. It also makes it more simple to do poop checks for health.

My brother owns a leopard gecko and I can confirm, those %30 of leopard geckos are lethal. Overall he’s a pretty chill gecko but when it comes to feeding time, he is very very aggressive you definitely gotta be careful.

I thought it was so weird when my gecko was just constantly sitting in her humid hide! I'm glad someone mentioned to me that some geckos just love their humid hide and stay there a lot. I thought she was sick (or going to become sick) because she was doing that, but it turned out that it was just where she liked to sleep or hang out during the day. To this day, she hasn't had any signs of an upper respiratory infection or impaction so I guess she knows what she's doing.

Not always, my humidity is at the right levels for my gecko and they still choose their humid hide over the other two and has done that since the day I brought them home🤷🏻♀️ Leopard geckos don’t need that much humidity, most rooms are usually humid enough to naturally keep their enclosure at the right level.

My gecko would poop in his humid hide and shed on every hide but that one... lol. Eventually had to take it out because it was getting hard do clean. I guess they're all just weird.
@@luvmypolly I mean, I use a digital hygrometer, and the humidity was within the recommended amount - I forget what it actually was. But I tried misting down the substrate to increase the humidity in the enclosure but she still preferred the humidity box.

My leopard gecko is more hyper than me and I have ADHD. She sees my hand and sprints to run up it, proceding to try to fly through the sky. I'm very glad I got her a large enough tank for her to run around in, and she has plenty of things to keep her entertained. I plan to get her some more toys soon.
Hopefully she'll calm down when she's older... She's currently 6 months.
I'm also considering upgrading her fron her 40G to a 75G, if she doesn't mellow out by the time Petco has another $1 a gallon sale.

It's so weird, I've always heard that a 20 gallon long is the minimum size for a leopard gecko. I've got four and they all seem just fine in their twenty gallons. I'm usually awake the same times they're awake and I don't really see them acting stressed or cramped. They mainly just switch hides and beg for food lol
More space is always better but at a certain point it's just excessive. I don't even know what my leo would do with sixty gallons worth of space lol

just like with tarantulas people will shame spider owners for keeping them in "tiny" enclosures when literally tarantulas will just sit in the same spot for weeks so there's no point of giving them huge enclosures that they're not going to use or appreciate
I think it really depends on what you put in the enclosure for them. A 60 gallon that only has 20-30 gallons' worth of good hides/enrichment isn't going to be as fun or comfy for a leopard gecko as a fully tricked-out 20+ gallon enclosure with full coverage. Huge amounts of empty space can be stressful for captive animals IFAIK b/c it shows there's a huge part of their provided environment that doesn't offer any protection or shade. That can be terrifying for an animal that's so small!

My leo has a 20 gallon and I'd say she only uses 2/3 of the space tbh. The remaining 1/3 is only noteworthy because it has the poop corner

This point I totally agree, I got a hognosee for my first time snake, and a lotta people tend to say that they are not recommended as a first snake. but I have learned so so much owning what some consider a difficult species, and while we are still working on a few issues (manily not eatting unless its in his mouth), I feel like I've learned a lot more than I would have with an 'easy' snake like a corn or something. idk its just how I think
hognoses are so cute, I was considering to get one as well but ended up going for a ball python. I think I read somewhere that hognoses don't strike food unless it's scented with toad/frog.

I did have a 23 gallon but got ABSOLUTELY ATTACKED on social media about that being WAY too small... hearing people recommend a 10 gallon is really horrible- glad that you can put him right

A twenty gallon long is perfect for an adult considering they’re not really climbers. They don’t need the height that much and my adult female Leo is very comfortable in hers. Anything extra is a plus but as long as they’ve got decent roaming room it’s fine. 23 gallons is a good size.

My daughter's leopard gecko and mine are super different in how their personalities are 🤣🤣 mine is relatively easy to hold and I work with her on that so she will be handle-able as she gets older. She also hides all the time and doesn't want to be seen. She sneaks out to her cool side at night to poop 🤣🤣 my daughter's gecko gets really adventurous at night and wanders all around his enclosure and perks up when he hears her talking. He's funny. Way more social but she doesn't really hold him.
my two geckos are similar! my youngest one ( almost 2 years) is very hyper and always runs to the glass when he hears me talking or sees my hand. my other (just turned 3) is very calm, always hides, doesn't like to be seen, and only comes out when it's his feeding time lmao
Mine is like your daughter's. I can't hold her at all, she's too much of a flight risk. I can scratch her under her chin and pet her back, but she will quickly grab hold of my finger and try to run up my arm, so she can fly off my shoulder. I lover her, but gosh is she a handful. If she wakes up and sees me in the room while the lights are on, she will start glass surfing to get me to come play. She has no other reason to do so. She has plenty of space, hiding spots, toys, and gradient spots. It is useful in checking her tummy, though.
I plan to upgrade her from a 40G to a 75G soon. She just really needs more play space.

I think shelf lining is pretty good for a flooring. It’s cheap, there isn’t any holes depending on which one you get, they’re soft, and they come in cool designs. They’re also REALLY easy to clean. You just take it out and wash it off and you’re basically done.
It’s good for beginner owners who aren’t comfortable with loose substrate yet but geckos LOVE to dig. Also needs to be replaced pretty often because it can easily grow bacteria:)
I'm glad my geckos not the only crazy one 😂 I've had him 11 years and he is always planning his escape. Jumping off my hand and biting, escaping his tank. He was lost for 3 months and somehow lived on all the store in his tail. He's nuts but I live him ❤
8:04 this is so true but colder enclosures actually work so much better. I once thought to myself that her enclosure might be a bit too cold because I was only just above the minimum at 84, but when I upgraded to 87 it turned out that she immediately changed her sleeping place to the cool side and only came out very late at night when the temperature dropped significantly. After a while I noticed that she really avoided the warm side so I put her old lamp back in and everything was back to normal.

I’ve had my leopard gecko for 5+ years now. My sister had wanted one, so we went to good ole petco and got one and when you say those things screech boy do you mean it 😂 I was shocked though, mainly because mine had never made a noise even close to that, let alone a noise at all.

Depending on the season Rosy Boas are either (typically) cerpescular or nocturnal, but if the environment is right they will come out at really any time. That's a great way for me to know her parameters are really good, if I see her out at 11am or 4pm I know she's content and just exploring or looking for food. It makes sense, being from the desert, that they prefer evenings or nights to come out at a good temperature, but since her tank is highly regulated and I don't do day/night cycles she just emerges when she's feeling like it.

When my leopard gecko was younger his 10 gallon was 20 inches long and 10 inches wide. Considering that now hes 9 inches long it's good I bumped him up to 40 gallons rather than keeping him in a space where the side walls were only as long as he was lol. I can never see how someone can see an adult in that space and go "yeah hes good, lotsa room to wander"

My leopard gecko is decently chill, but she definitely has her moments. I just bought her a new 20 gallon with front opening doors that will hopefully be a simple bioactive setup! She will either love it or hate it, there will be no in between...
A warning I found when I plopped my baby into a bioactive, if they don't eat for a while after or only eat small amounts, they are probably snacking on the isopods. I was freaking out when she wasn't eating, but she wasn't losing weight. Then I saw some isopods crawl out of the ground after the lights went out, and she hunted them down.
They are safe for them, so just don't panic, as long as your gecko stays a healthy weight.

my personal experiences on the topics covered here (my first leo and reptile ever, definitely not my last):
mine has a relatively calm nature, but i haven't used much exposure therapy on him so he doesn't like being held too much. other than that he chills most of the day.
My leo has a like... a little over 1 foot height, 1 foot width, a little over 2 feet length tank. just by his size when i changed from 10 gallon (more of an aquarium) to the 20 gallon (reptile tank with doors) i could tell he was happier with the space. he loves to roam to about 5-6 different spots throughout the day and night.
he loves his mealworms, thankfully. i was scared he would get bored of them, but not yet.
he does his business in the very back right corner which i have to get past a hide, branch, and hammock to get to. i think he's evil. i cleared the moss out from there just so it would be easier to pick up.
i use packed dirt with dried moss on top as substrate. maybe controversial, i'm not sure. i wouldn't recommend it when you first get your lizard. they can be unpredictable so you want to make sure they won't randomly bite at the ground thinking its food or miss food completely and eat the floor. my leo is very coordinated, so i have no trouble. though, i think he finds the moss comfortable, he's always laying on it. i wouldn't recommend reptile carpet either because they easily build up harmful bacteria and a lizard's claws are able to get stuck and possibly rip. just my opinion.
i found that a small undertank heater on the warm side and a ceramic heat emitter are the best combo, especially if your household likes to run on the colder side. this makes the warm side about 80 degree Fahrenheit and the cold side about 60, which is good. make sure that the spot on the tank, where the heat pad is, is a suitable temperature for your lizard to stand on (after substrate is put in). they burn easily. though, they are fairly smart. if everything is in the correct place, one they are familiar with the tank, they will know when and where to go to regulate their body temps.
mine is actually more on the nocturnal side. he usually starts doing his nightly routine at 10 or 11 pm, which last who knows how long into the night. by 5 or 6 am he'll be back in his hide, sleeping.
the heat emitter that i use 24/7 is a purple night light. it's blocked out by a three of his hides, so he has pitch black places to go. he seems content with this setup.
thank you to anyone who read this far. i hope it may help someone who is a new reptile owner. when i first got him, i was stressing out about every little thing and almost made myself sick from worry, but it all turned out good. if you worried like me and did research as much as i did, then you're probably going to be a good reptile owner and i wish you luck. i think you'll care for your little friend just fine.
I remember when I got my second leopard gecko, and he was still a baby damn that thing would SCREAM. It didn't really scare me, as expected if they were hardly handled or are still babies i'd be scared as shit if something much bigger than me was trying to handle me.
The calm nature is suuuuuuch a stretch I got a pair geckos from a breeder (they had different parents) and one was the most mellow gecko I've ever handled his girlfriend on the other hand was very territorial and hated being handled so I'm glad you pointed out not all geckos are mellow right in the beginning
My mother Has had her Leopard Gecko for 11 years and still has it in a 10 gallon, I've told her a few times it should be in a larger tank, but she always says it "looks" happy. I mention it to a care specialist at our local reptile shop and they tell her it should be in a larger tank, mom goes " Huh I never knew", and proceeds to not upgrade it.
Tell her that surviving is not thriving. A human could live in a closet and look happy and healthy but that is no life for anyone. A 10 gallon for a leopard gecko is cruel. You can't fit three hides in there along with a water dish and still have room for your gecko to move around. There's no temperature gradient and they can't thermo regulate when they're half the size of the enclosure.
Hate when people say their reptile or fish LOOKS happy when they're being mistreated- like, what does that even mean? Is he smiling? Wagging his tail?

To be clear about color lights, leopard geckos specifically have cones in their eyes for green and blue, but not red or yellow. A red light is dimmer, so they do indeed see less light. They cannot see red like some other reptiles can. Red lights are still inferior to using the no-light method or a simple dim room light (ambient light rather than direct light, not for heat but for the simulation of moonlight). And their low light vision is also excellent, so what seems dim to us may be far brighter to them.

I bought an abused Rosy Boa a year ago, her medical conditions were too severe to save her sadly. It was my first snake and she was very sweet, never snipped or got defensive once, but she was a relatively old adult when I got her. Fast forward to her passing, I still wanted a Rosy Boa so this time I did a lot more vetting of the seller and got a neonate from a reputable source. I should have known lol... oh man. In the photos he sent of her she was in strike position, in EVER photo. The guy had 3 others for sale, none of the other snakes had such defensive posture... turns out she is one spicy shoe string. Either me or my wife handles her as often as possible, which honestly since she eats once a week only leaves a few days each week. She strikes a lot less, has never actually bitten, but yeah, nothing like the other Rosy Boa. They always say how calm they are, but I can tell you first hand that's not a guarantee... some of it is her age, but I think even when she's 10 or 15 she'll still be sassy. You can just see it in her eyes xD
My little cousin had a leopard gecko before I got one. She told me it ALWAYS screams at them so they never handle him. Lol I felt bad. Mine is pretty chill. The poop corner is great for clean up. I reeeeealllly wish crested geckos did this.

Cricket horror story time-
I keep my reptiles in my room , as I still live with my parents. I got little crickets from a local reptile shop . I was transferring them from the bag to the small container I was going to keep them in until I needed them for my reptiles. Well as I was dumping them in 5-10 tiny crickets fell on the floor and before I could get them they all disappeared under my dresser. I started bawling right then and there and didn’t sleep in my room , and used bug killer . Never did that again .
That's a bit excessive 😳 but they are annoying when loose I have one loose for a roommate rn 😑

I'm so happy that my daughter's leopard gecko went off crickets. He used to love them but they're so annoying to keep and they die if you look at them. One day he just decided he hated them and I was like, me too buddy. These days he's all about the roaches. He flip flops between dubias and red runners, but they're both pretty cool imo
Oh and he's taken the next step from pooping in a corner: he figured out if he holds it in until we let him out, he can poop on our clothes and keep his room clean. Kinda gross but kinda convenient, and definitely better than when we discovered he'd been secretly climbing up his vine and hiding his poop near the ceiling which was both impressive and hella nasty
Okay, I have a question. I have my leopard gecko in a 20 gal with three hides, one on the warm side, middle, and cool side. I have a heat mat on the warm side, and rocks that get warmed up by a heat lamp. I also set up a hammock near the top of the tank close to the lamp because I noticed he would always try and be up high. Now, he spends almost every single day up on this hammock basking under the heat lamp. Is this normal? Is there something I'm not doing right?

You have to careful when buying thermostats I recently bought a exo terra thermostat 600W thermostat but didn’t realize that there are two versions and I bought the wrong one (they have one with a dual and one with a single receptacle)
You also have to consider how you want to heat the enclosure heat mat/cable/strip can use on/off, dimming or pulsing thermostats, heat lamps need a dimming thermostat and ceramic heat emitters need a pulsing thermostat.

CHE’s can be damaged and have a shortened lifetime when used with a on/off thermostats.
Dimming thermostats can also be used but pulse is preferable when using a CHE.

Its a planted bioactive enclosure with a 2.5% UVB t5 tube so adding a heat lamp would make it far too bright and having no heating at all lessens its appetite and makes it go into brumation (like it was doing for the last 4 months)
Me Leo is a 6 year old girl and shes lived in a 20 gallon all her life. She's getting upgraded to a 30 gallon viv soon, and I'm super excited. We use a ceramic heat emitter on a thermostat for heat. Do you think that's good enough to the bigger tank? Or should I start looking into other options?
@@nightinggale6470 thank you! I would like to add that along with the CHE she also has a uva/uvb bulb separately. I'm actually not 100 percent on the size of the new tank since its second hand and I haven't measured it. My best guess is between 30 and 40 gallons and its pretty tall. I'll look into getting a halogen flood bulb and a dimmer if you think thats best.

10 gallon tanks don’t offer a proper heat gradient. Beyond a space issue, it’s a health issue!

I got my first leapord gecko 2 weeks ago, and so far it's pretty chill. I say it because it's pretty young and I haven't been able to tell if its male or female. But yea I got very lucky. Easy to feed and getting used to me pretty fast.
I have a reptile hammock that my leopard gecko poops on. Not what it was meant for, but it’s great that I don’t have to change the paper towel as often. I just clean the poop off, and take out the hammock to wash once a week
What moss would you recommend for their humid hide? My gecko stays in the one hide majority of the time cause it gets the darkest but I’m not sure what to do for the humidity part
You can buy moss specifically for reptiles, it’s usually dehydrated and you soak it in water. Don’t use moss from outside because there’s a chance you’ll bring pesticides/chemicals into your geckos enclosure.

I’m in the 30% my gecko is hilarious 😆 he has gotten better tho. He is ok with holding now but one time he bit me and drew blood. It hurt too.
I'd been feeding my Leo exclusively superworms for the last 6-8 months and she was fine until last month. She got a mild case of impaction, and that's the only thing that she would have ingested. I gave her a couple warm soaks and it cleared up, but from now on its just crickets and the occasional small mealworm for her.
My geck has like a 30 gallon long and she barely uses all that space, I change up the placement of the decorations and hides 3 times a year for enrichment and sometimes she likes a hide in a particular place so much she stops coming out of that hide until I change it up again
My leo hates meal/super worms and dubias always seem to run out at all the stores in my area

Hey man, what do you do for cold/warm/hot side temperatures in tank for day 36L 18W 16T tank?
Currently I got a 100w heat emitter on the cold side. UVB build on-top in the middle and a 150w bulb on the hot side. The tank is rough 78 cold side and 95 hot side.
Any tips would be great thanks!
Edit- I do have a heat pad underneath a hide on the cool side. I live in Canada and it's winter time. I just want to make sure the temperatures are correct.
Honestly I wouldn’t use any heat on the cool side, my tank stays at the perfect temp with my heat emitter being on the hot side:) It’s supposed to be a temperature gradient, they go to the cool side to get away from direct heat. Just make sure you have a thermometer on both sides (with the probe placed in the middle of the tank, slightly lower to the ground) to monitor. I personally don’t let the hot side go above 92°, because that is reaching maximum temp (95°) and the cool side I don’t let get lower than 74°. Hope this helps:) I think you could go down to one heat emitter on the hot side and have the perfect temps!

I currently don’t have the funds to order a DHP online or halogen bulbs (we don’t have any at any of my local petstores as I’ve already tried to find some) geckos aren’t huge baskers anyways and my gecko is still young so he prefers to stay in his hides during the day. I was sharing my experience and what I’d recommend them to do, not everyone has easy/quick access to those products. My gecko is healthy and happy so I’m not too worried as this lighting/heat situation is temporary and won’t be a forever thing.
I can confirm. My First Leo, Blep, is a sweetheart who loves to snug up into my beard.
My second Leo, i have dubbed him Sir Caliente, Lord of Spice, because he is ANGR.
He aint even big enough to be sure hes male, but with a temper like that, either hes Sir Calienta, or Lady Hellfire.
I work at a ✨pet store✨ and we have a juvenile leopard geck right now that is an absolute lunatic. If I put my hand in his enclosure he screams and tries to bite me. They most definitely are not all chill.

When i was given my gecko he was living in a 10 gallon tank and had been for 4 years. I felt horrible for him, he had almost no room to move around and his only source of heat was a heating pad under the tank where his hiding cave was. she said he was a loner and wasn’t very active. Like no shit, he didn’t have room to be active and his only warmth was in his cave. I spent $300 in two days preparing a 30 gal i closure for him and he’s been way more active in the time I’ve had him

My leopard gecko seems to be having trouble shedding his skin. Majority of the dead skin is off, but he has a few spots on his face and body. Is is ok to peel is off for him?

I got lucky that I got my leopard gecko from an owner who was taking care of them before they had some life changes and decided to rehome, so my guy enjoys handling and will come up to me when I open his tank lol. I hate crickets they're too jumpy and crazy and I'm worried about them escaping in the bio lmao. But he loves his crickets the most lol

Undertank heaters for geckos like leopard I noticed works best because the heat helps them digest. And the thinnest part of their body is their belly. It helps regulate heat. A night heat immitter works fine too. Sorry about spelling im stoned and dyslexic and idc lmao
@@nightinggale6470 yeah that works too lol I've never had an issue with heat mats connected to thermostats and I've kept many kind. Reptiles that need more I use overhead and something both under and over depending on the species. Lots of different info out there. Just gage the reptile to their needs. I've been keeping for years and know a few exotic specialists but hey each reptile is different and lots of different correct methods too. But definitely not a one size fits all thing

My leo's are each in their own 55 gal and over 2 years they have literally only used half of their space. I would think 20 gal would be pretty close to what they would 'need' while being big enough to truly have a warm side / cool side.
A couple years ago I got gifted this cute candle holder that was shaped like a cactus. I gave it to my gecko as a hide and she decided that that would be her potty

My dad is freinds with jungle bob, and my grandma lives in the same apartment complex and I used to go to his store and hangout with this huge iguana named Rocky and he was bigger then me, sadly I moved to Texas so I can't go to the store anymore
