  • www.autobytel.com/volkswagen/j... The Volkswagen Jetta has received a mid-season refresh for 2014 but the big news is the new 1.8 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that replaces the old 2.5 liter 5-cylinder that was developed a decade ago. Prices start at just $18,895 to get a model equipped with this 1.8 liter engine. Output is 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy figures are 26 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway when equipped with the manual transmission.
    This engine is a good match for the compact Jetta. The engine, suspension, steering, all work together to create a good driving vehicle. For day to day driving, the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta has nice midrange power as acceleration is good once the turbo has time to spool up.

    Honestly it is the Best car in the class... German simplicity and agile handling make it so good. Its main focus is Driving dynamics where no non-german car can match. Im sorry but its true. Love my VDub

    When did the whole auto industry get so obsessed with a soft touch dash? I'd much rather have soft touch doors & armrests. Who actually touches their dashboard on a daily basis? But I digress, good review. Nice car.

    • @21FILTHY
      @21FILTHY 10 років тому +5

      I agree it's not like we're going to be resting our elbows on the damn dash! As long as it looks good that's all I care about

    • @ViolinIliev
      @ViolinIliev 9 років тому

      Well I have the SE model and the door handles where you rest your arms are very soft like a small leather cushion. The steering wheel is also wrapped in leather and is really nice on the hand. The gear stick is also super comfortable with soft-touch and some metal ornaments. The dashboard is not soft-touch in this model and you are right - who cares - I don't rest my arm there.

    • @WhiteKitta
      @WhiteKitta 9 років тому +3

      I know.....I could not care less for a soft touch dash....lol.... ridiculous..plus the soft touch material gets easier damaged by the sun, it will dry out and rip eventually! the Jetta is sexy super roomy and has tones of power while not sucking gas like a crazy insufficient maniac...that's what counts!

    • @jamievidd775
      @jamievidd775 9 років тому +4

      I know.....so ridiculous the dashboard comment. I have the SE w/connectivity model in white w/6pd auto and the dash is FINE. Who cares if it's soft or hard? You know what? The seats are FANTASTIC as is the height/length adjustable center armrest, the 1.8T is FAST,runs on regular and best in class, roomy, and handles great. I paid 19K and change before taxes (3K under MSRP). The car drives like a BMW for literally half the price. I rented a Focus SE......not even close.....seats/engine/transmission all far inferior.

      +Jacari Lamar I think it does more with the appearance. The hard plastics (which i had in my old 08 Focus) are easy to scratch, and once scratched are hard to remove. The softer stuff is a bit more forgiving and looks nicer, longer; or at least that is what I have experienced within my latest car (Cruze)

    i got to drive this car as a rental.. just for the weekend.. but i fell in love with it... especially with the turbo engine.. it was black on black with "vinyl" seats.. it drove nicely on the freeway and had nice acceleration.... now this is after driving a 2010 corolla so for me... it was quite an acceptional car

    Excellent excellent review. I agree with everything he said and our 2014 jetta SE 1.8TSI is just about a yr old with 15k miles on it. Fantastic driving/riding/handling car and fuel mileage is outstanding.

      +Brandon Friesen I don't know they test cheap VW Jettas in USA. In Canada, we have more choices than that. The Highline is full equipped, contrary to the SE in USA. I guess they don't like this car and want to minimized it ? Not fair…

    • @brandonfriesen5389
      @brandonfriesen5389 9 років тому

      herve30able1 I live in Canada and we only have 1 more trim level. We have Trendline(comparable to S) Trendline Plus, Comfortline(SE) and Highline(SEL). Back in 2011-2012 we had Sportline but it was dropped.

    Good review. I have a 2009 Jetta with the 2.5 L engine and manual transmission. I like the way they drive, and the size is just right (between typical compacts and mid-size cars). The ride and handling are great, and the trunk is spacious for a car that size. I'm thinking of trading it in for a new one this year, with the 1.8T engine.

    Do like I did and get the tan interior. it is black and tan across the dash and doors and contrast well with a few carbon fiberish looking trim pieces. I found a 2014 se 1.8t just like this car except it has an automatic. It is toffee brown...I love it! AND I found a USED one with 890 miles. It was $16800 and after my $2500 trade in for my worn out Benz I got a hell of a deal of $14300 before tax. PLUS I get 2yr/24000 mile certified warranty that kicks in when the standard warranty runs out.. I got lucky

    • @PositivelyPam
      @PositivelyPam 10 років тому

      Nice, congrats. I love the toffee brown and really wanted that color but ended up with a tornado red (which I love just as much) with the cornsilk beige interior and sunroof that was marked down $4K to make way for the 2015 models. I agree that the lighter interior makes a world of difference in the inside esthetics.

    that interior is looks like it came from the late 90's early 2000's, damn couldn't they put a crease or a swoop somewhere, not even a two tone. But hey at least its functional (as if other cars with some design aren't).

    • @PositivelyPam
      @PositivelyPam 10 років тому +3

      I have this car with the cornsilk beige interior and it really makes a difference -- two toned inside door panels. That carries over a bit onto the dash which also has metal contrasting touches. Not sure if it's also because I got the SE with the connectivity and sunroof package, but it looks really nice compared to the all black interior in this car he test drove. The downside is the floor mats are cornsilk beige but I don't have any messy kids to worry about, and the car came with Monster Mats for winter usage. But I love that VW kept the controls simple with no knobs and buttons all over the shifter, and only on one side of the steering wheel. I absolutely adore my car!

    • @ViolinIliev
      @ViolinIliev 9 років тому +1

      Pamela Sosnowski True. I also have the SE with connectivity and sunroof. It's very fun driving it. The automatic transmission is actually 6 speeds. However - I also think the interior could be a bit better.

    • @herve30able1
      @herve30able1 9 років тому

      +enemay The one I owned is a 2014, TSI, white with the interior in leather tan. Quite a difference from what we see tested in USA. Mine is more than a 90's look and it looks more than functional but enjoyable. If enjoyable seems like an American car driving like a boat on road. No thanks, I gave enough !

    • @herve30able1
      @herve30able1 9 років тому +1

      +Violin Iliev Just buy an Audi, the interior will be better but for 20k more !

  • @eternalhalloween1
    @eternalhalloween1 10 років тому

    The VW Jetta is a respectable car, and I agree that one thing you get from German cars is a nice driving experience that American and Japanese cars can't match.
    However, America and Japan have something on their side as well. It's not hell for the average mechanic to get parts for American and Japanese cars.
    That translates to, anytime there is a problem with a German car, you pretty much have to go to the dealer. And that costs big big money.

      @heyitsme939 5 років тому

      advertised horsepower and fuel economy are achieve with premium fuel. you can put regular, but you will sacrifice some power & mpg's. I would just put premium to get the best performance from the engine.

    What about maintenance? From what I heard 1.8T engines love oil and you have to add 1 qt per 1000 km

    • @brandonfriesen5389
      @brandonfriesen5389 10 років тому

      From 1999 to 2005, yes the ole 1.8t was an oil hog. But this is gen II with nothing in common with that engine. It is basically a re-stroked 2.0t from the mk6 GTI. Maintenance should be low because my 2.0t has done nothing wrong and if there's less to go wrong on the 1.8t, reliability should be better

    • @ZaibAquil
      @ZaibAquil 10 років тому

    The 2.5 was great it did a great job. Have a 1.8! Also it was great has a turbo and s gear slick shift making shifting faster . Car drives great. Had a vr6 also. No problem with any of the cars. But had them serviced at vw. Never have a vw serviced at your local American doofus mechanic. Or you will regret it Vw will do the service much faster and correctly.
