My Mother is having an absolute nightmare of a time with her 2012 Chevy Cruze. We're talking ongoing engine stalling/shut down on low mileage, babied, and fully maintained by Chev Dealership car bought from new. Been giving headaches since out of warranty, every time it goes in for a repair it comes back with 3 new problems. I personally own 3 Mazdas and an Infiniti and am pushing her to get into a Mazda herself. Why is the 1.4 turbo version of the 2012 Cruze so damn terrible?

Scotty the 1.4TSI is hands down the most reliable VW motor right now. Also has 180 tq at sub 2000 rpm. Literally just put gas in it, change the oil at 5k and use VW approved oil (I use liqui moly only) and do Spark Plugs at 40k w/ air filter and you'll have this motor last you 200k EASY. I won't doubt people can get 250k-300k out of it.
Also you can literally do the timing belt by reaching into the engine bay. It's cake. This is THE best VW motor since the 2.5l NA.

It's not. I love Scotty but he's wrong about VW. I have a 17 Jetta with that motor (5 speed) and it's been a great car so far and they aren't as expesive to own as they used to be. Certainly the cheapest of the German options and the best option in my opinion. I got mine during a "sales event" and managed to buy mine for 15,500 before tax (Not a base model either, it's an SE). I am getting about 40-41 MPG. Maybe he's mad cause it rivals anything Toyota has MPG wise hahaha. He's certainly right about the belt though. That was a dumb move on their part.

VW says lifespan is about 200k miles and generally they make that without problems after that they can go for longer sometimes. However keep in mind it will simply wear out from the turbo strain and break so just buy a new car by then. Thing is though in the usa people drive more then here in Europe. In Europe gas prices are 3.5 times higher aswell. So it makes sense to produce these engines because of gas mileage and people here tend to not drive 300-400k miles with one car anyway since that is 30 years of driving for most people.

Not only that, but the best that I could find online is that the belt "should" be changed at 150k. That's 10-12 years of average mileage, and the first major maintenance cost in that time.
Generally, I'd prefer a chain, but we've all seen a timing chain break or slip, too. Those are usually interference engines as well, but nobody says anything because nobody expects the chain to break.

Its been awarded "engine of the year" for nine consecutive years or so.. Direct injection turbocharged back in the day was an innovation. You get the horsepower, the torque, the fuel economy and fewer emmisions and all of that from a 1.4 engine. Thats called "efficiency" and if an engine is efficient is not the "worst" for sure.
To get all these goods ofcourse you need high pressure fuel, high temperatures in the combustion chambers etc so you sacrifice a little bit of reliability, but you cant have it all.
