i've got a 2012 with the 2.5L (se with convenience & sunroof)...bought new and at 154k now...never a problem with the engine itself (i do run premium fuel, though) and no car payment or timing belt worries for almost 6 years now...so that offsets the 2-3 mpg difference for me, at least
Jesus, don't tell me it is 2014 model. my 09 civic has about same cabin technology, fuel economy and most importantly I remember it was a little cheaper than the price VW offers on their 14 model.
Your 09 Civic did not include CarNet, ICRS, Independent Rear Suspension, a quick, yet very efficient motor, or even good interior materials or quality. My grandmas 07 civic was very slow, didn't get very good mpg, cramped seat and trunk, cheap interior, and next to no features. It was an EX too.
I have the 2012 vw jetta se, 2.5 - 5 cylinder and I love it, these reviews are so gudgy.... I started to feel that way too seeing how people view the jettas, but when I see mine and I drive it all that goes away. Mine definitely has some great power to it.
people dont understand how nice the " entry level" stereo sound is in this car. Yes it looks simple wiht no fancy B&O or Harman Kardon system .. but its soo crisp and clear and has a pretty good base for "cheap" system. Also the new 1.8t is defiantly no joke. at first i though it would be sluggish and boring, nope soo as i learned the power curve its sweet spot this car is fun to drive. I have surprised many jerk offs on the road who wouldnt let me merge on a lane. Big potential for this motor also
The reviewer never discussed interior space. The Jetta has the most rear-seat space and largest trunk in its class. Those are big selling points for some people.
WuWei Xu define poor reliability. I used to think my MK4 Jetta was a piece of shit, but I've had it 8 years and it has only broken down maybe 4-5 times. Nothing out of the ordinary in terms of maintenance. Very simple car to own and operate, too little power, lower gas mileage than it should have for its size, but a solidly built car.
Zapp Rogerstein Alright, go for an Elantra or Forte and it wouldn't have broken down once either. You're really struggling to support your point of view.
WuWei Xu Comfy and lots of space in the cabin and in the trunk compared to the competition, but a little bad on gas since I have the 2.5 L. Definitely pick up the diesel..
Great car if you don't have a lot of money to spend on a car. I don't understand people buying an Asian or American car over this. It drives so much nicer and is just more solid imo.
Americans have different values from Europeans. They just care about getting from point a-b and spending as little as possible. This Jetta has been cheapened to deal with American tastes but I'd still rather get it over a Toyota (ew) but I think I'm getting the 2015 VW Golf instead.
juppongatana773 True. I am German obviously and tell all my friends in LA to buy a VW instead of a Prius or Camry. Most of them don't listen though haha. But I think you got it right buying a Golf.
Kaipeternicolas The new Focus and Cruze are both German (and a tad Belgian), yet they don't resort to the low-rent aspects of this car. You're better off buying a used Jetta than these new ones... There's a reason VW is the highest profiting auto company... They spend very little and charge a lot. The Golf is better than the Jetta at least, but you pay for it.
Because Germans aren't the only ones that make good cars. but I will admit....this Jetta is reasonably priced for what you get and for that reason I would be considering it if I were in the market for a new car. Right now my 2003 Ford Focus is treating me just fine and I intend to keep driving it for a few more years.
Frank L It is since this year yes. Before it was VW Group. www.dw.de/porsche-emerges-as-worlds-most-profitable-carmaker/a-16727077 I'd never in my life buy a Toyota.
I LOVE this car in red! Saw two of them on the lot this weekend, and they really stood out! Very nice looking cars in my opinion. But I prefer simple designs in comparison to those with a lot of curves . . . I think they tend to age better visually.
the 2014 jetta se and sel is definitely very glitzy and fancy in my eyes.....this car is amazing and sexy!... I test drove 3 of them and I am now set on buying one....I think this guy has extremely bad taste in cars...
2.5 Inline 5 NA engine has no turbo lag. Good power from low to high RPM. Most mechanics recommends to stay away from turbo. Makes sense because an inferior cylinder engine is trying to drum up power artificially to keep up with a higher cylinder engine.
I have the exact same 2014 Jetta with Connectivity except mine is automatic and Black on Beige. I bought this car for the exact reasons he mentioned. I didn't want anything gaudy or over styled like too many cheap cars try to do. I love the looks of my car and the black/beige color scheme gets lots of compliments. I'm a very happy Jetta owner, and yes new Mazda 3 is also nice, but I liked the Jetta more. One side note however, you don't have to pass through setting the clock to see the different odometers. The controls are on the wiper stalk. So no ergonomic screw up here.
I owned a 2001 Jetta and a 2009 Jetta and the interiors were always awesome with all soft touch material and the sound systems were killer and then they cheapen the interiors when they redesign them in 2011 its a shame the Jetta lost its premium feel it used too have. now I own a 2013 golf TDI with a really nice sound system and the interior is all soft touch looks and feels like an Audi
Brian, on the right lever, in its tip, there is the controls for switching between windows on the board. Nice videos, by the way... Regards from Romania, Marius C.
I own the 2014 Jetta TDI Value Edition, the interior is pretty much identical to the one in here, I love the driving dynamics, and the very simple design of the interior of the car.
camshaft53149 Tried a 2014? They're fantastic! Their not miles ahead of the Jetta though. They placed the Jetta 3rd on the compact car list next to the Focus and new 3 in car and driver. Thats very high praise. 2012 3's were okay, really good handlers but the interior is a let down. The new Jettas are fine now, nice materials and I like the upper trim levels.
I have not. Next time I'm in the market for a car in a few years I definately will check all brands again. Only brand I really will not consider again would be Nissan especially because they don't make any manual versions of the Altima or any mid trims of the Sentra with a manual.
I have a 2013 with a 2.5 and I dont think I would trade for a 1.8. I actually prefer the sound of the 5. sounds like a baby v10 or something. Ive also paired it with a performance tune giving it 185 hp and 207lb of torque.
I have a 2011 Jetta TDI with a 6 speed manual. I have gotten 52.4 MPG on a 305 mile trip!!! I love the car, it is red, and I have added a spoiler on the back. It looks hot and rides nice. I had a 2005 Jetta TDI and do not feel much difference with the ride. As far as cheep goes, I watch the mileage and not spend too much time caressing the hard dash!!! The 05 Jetta was 8 years old, had 114,000+ miles on it and still sold for $10,000!!!! Diesels keep their value!!!
I don’t know why I’m watching this in 2023 but my wife and I have a 2014 VW Jetta SE 1.8 (automatic) and it came with a push to start, digital radio/head unit and a sunroof. I don’t know why this car looks is so bland in the video but ours is great and looks totally different
Great job on the review. I like the back to basic and more simple package here and would like to so see more. I'm a fan of the connectivity and alloy wheel combo too. Just give me a sunroof option and some integrated blindspot mirrors (like Ford's) and I'm done. Less to break and maintain over time also.
I just got mine yesterday and video shows a great explanation on what makes this car so convenient. I think the reviewer was a little hard some like the radio I thought it was pretty sleek for the part. I like how looks I think the best feature of the car is inside the house It’s pretty gorgeous as I wish there was a camera on the back but they have it pretty please with it.
volkswagen is a class and u could relate it to toyota of Germany.......u need this car as a commuter vehicle to get you from point a to b....For me it's a homemade food, boring yet healthy and reliable :)
Key notes here.... If you're going to do a review of Volkswagens ..DON'T START OFF BY SAYING YOU AREN'T FOND OF THEM ( makes you look shiesty and non-credible). Also.. The Jetta SE 1.8T..IS a 'sporty' car, smh... Do your homework. All of the New MK6 body styles come with sport mode, even the base. While everyone biasely focuses so much on the GLI.. there is not a huge difference as to why the GLI gets sooo much love and attention apart from the 1.8T SE or SEL models. They're the closest thing to GLI's right behind it... a few in dash features different maybe, navigation, something like that... 18 inch tires, sport brakes, fog lamps, spoilers, blah blah. You can get all that and more to fit the same 1.8T trims cus most the parts are compatible with GLIs and Turbo Charged SE & SEL. Duh!... smh Rofl @ "Blob of paint"... I have nice royal blue one, it looks fantastic! Most cars that come factory in plain looking Reds, Whites, and Gray are "blobs of paint".. Base colors suck on most cars. My Jetta isn't a Base color..it's Royal Blue, so there big shot.. (punches CNET). lol
VW have lost their way. This car is genuinely dismal compared with the VW of previous years. Even the little details, such as the glossy black upper grille and matte (unpainted) black lower grille. Or how the stereo is only visible dead-on, and washes out completely at angles... even from the driver's seat, half of it is washed. You can see it in the video, it looks like it's bright green from the side. How did VW think this was okay? Oh, because they figure people will buy it no matter what they do... which is somewhat true.
All these crappy foreign cars look the same expensive electrical junk just a headache and expensive repair pulse I'm a mechanic screw buying parts for that u just buy a new car hahaha
I ordered a Volkswagen JETTA 2.0 SE with day running lights. When I visited the dealer showroom they showed the list of specifications with the day running lights even in their web site the main attraction is with the day running lights. My Volkswagen dealer sold me a car without the day running lights. After receiving the car I noticed about this. I’m paying for something that I never received. I've been trying to get this settled but the manager is offering me one year more extended warranty & service for my car. Saying Volkswagen stopped producing JETTA cars with day running lights for the entire Middle East Region. Does Volkswagen know how the dealers sell their car to the customers?
In Canada we don't have the SE version. I drive a Highline version 2014 : including, sunroof, leather in tan colour, a screen showing "Serrius X" stations by touch, Media, Bluetooth, fog lamps, superb sound system, electric seats, touch door handle to close or open doors and trunk with key in your pocket, soft vinyle for board and doors, all leather handbrakes and wheel, 60/40 rear seats with pass for skis and armrest, full electric windows down and up, automatic doors lock at 8mph, custom 17in. mag wheels on Continental tires and much more. Mentioning the economy of the 1,8 TSI, economical and powerful when needed. All for 28 000$, everything included : all taxes, delivery and a full tank of gas.
Consumer Reports rated the new Jetta's reliability high. The fact that you can get a turbocharged 1.8 Engine with manual transmission for this price is impressive.
I have a 2013 SE w/ convenience. I absolutely love the car, but my biggest regret is deciding to go with the automatic; I find myself driving around in tiptronic all of the time. It just feels like something is missing...I agree with Cooley, get the stick.
We chose the Jetta in its SEL form with the 1.8T in black with tan interior. What a great handling, solid vehicle. Yes, in its SEL form the car is more stylish and has a nicer interior.
Its still the same generation of car, you can't criticize them! BTW they have made many imrprovements ie: soft touch dash, independent rear suspension, new 1.8t motor, and CarNet. Looks the same, but it isn't.
The Passat has the analog clock, making it decidedly for old people. The Jetta TSI is for the confident driver who loves driving but has to take passengers in back routinely. The Golf is for the singles and childless loners who love driving. ;-)
7.3secs aint bad for a car with 170hp. Don't understand why cars today have to go 0-60 in 5secs or less to be fast.
I thought my car is pretty nippy having 9s 0-100 km/h. I suppose Americans are in a hurry all the time.
why does everyone knock on the 2.5L? I love It in my car, its highly under rated, and has a lot of under estimated potential.
because the extra cylinder doesn't really make for better power figures at all, while making fuel economy worse
i've got a 2012 with the 2.5L (se with convenience & sunroof)...bought new and at 154k now...never a problem with the engine itself (i do run premium fuel, though) and no car payment or timing belt worries for almost 6 years now...so that offsets the 2-3 mpg difference for me, at least
Damn, I wanted to hear what he was gonna say to Margie.
“Enjoy AM and FM” 💀 And that wasn’t even a joke.

Brandon Friesen Honda civics have always had independent rear suspension
f181234 You're right. My bad
Im guessing this guy owns a Cadillac
Porsche 911, Old Crown Vic. He's not stupid enough to buy a GM product.
VW make great cars but they just look SHIT! WTF! It's 2014!
THis guy makes me feel like shit for driving a compact car.
I have the 2012 vw jetta se, 2.5 - 5 cylinder and I love it, these reviews are so gudgy.... I started to feel that way too seeing how people view the jettas, but when I see mine and I drive it all that goes away. Mine definitely has some great power to it.
All I'm going to say is, the 1.8T ain't no joke and if you're about having some good bass on your music, this is the car of choice.
people dont understand how nice the " entry level" stereo sound is in this car.
Big potential for this motor also
Facts. the studio is wonderful best in its class
The reviewer never discussed interior space. The Jetta has the most rear-seat space and largest trunk in its class. Those are big selling points for some people.
Not even, the Toyota Corolla is the compact car that has the most rear seat space.
Why are there so MANY Volkswagen haters?
***** Poor reliability, Golf drivers are pretty bitchy, ugly styling and bad interior technology. At least that's why I hate them.
WuWei Xu define poor reliability. I used to think my MK4 Jetta was a piece of shit, but I've had it 8 years and it has only broken down maybe 4-5 times. Zapp Rogerstein If it were a Corolla or Civic, it wouldn't have broken down once.
Bullshit. They are more reliable but don't kid yourself. Japanese reliability has been down the past decade anyway, Korean cars are beating them.
Zapp Rogerstein Alright, go for an Elantra or Forte and it wouldn't have broken down once either. You're really struggling to support your point of view.
would buy this anyday.... i love VW cars...u can hate them only if you dont like things that are simple and easy.
+Soumyadeep Bag #DieselGate

ah well...my words were a bit premature i guess.. but its still a great car.. have driven one....
+Soumyadeep Bag Modern VWs are anything but simple and easy, if you ask any auto mechanic lol
Ben Bullard cant comment on that as I dont own one.. but one of my friend does own a Jetta and he has anything but praise for that car...
Soumyadeep Bag If you never owned one, then your argument is invalid.
These reviews are so crude, my 2012 has great power for a 2.5 - 5 cylinder. It's not a sports car
Own this car. Love it
Just bought one this week
I can't wait to pick it up
EluciaDeLuteIma How's your experience with the car? Like it or hate it?
WuWei Xu
Comfy and lots of space in the cabin and in the trunk compared to the competition, but a little bad on gas since I have the 2.5 L. Definitely pick up the diesel..
EluciaDeLuteIma Thanks for your opinion.
+EluciaDeLuteIma better than the 1.4 we have here. But Choo Choo all day.

he's wrong about the odometer passing through the clock, its on the end of the windshield wiper control arm stick , right side of steering wheel
Dude, you have some of the best car reviews on youtube, end of story!
I LOVE this car in red! Saw two of them on the lot this weekend, and they really stood out! Very nice looking cars in my opinion. But I prefer simple designs in comparison to those with a lot of curves . . . I think they tend to age better visually.
As do I , simple doesn't mean bad, but people like the modern sharp design , its just to bad they age the car.
the 2014 jetta se and sel is definitely very glitzy and fancy in my eyes.....this car is amazing and sexy!... I test drove 3 of them and I am now set on buying one....I think this guy has extremely bad taste in cars...

@@PCProphecy i bought one used for 120000 miles with Connectivity, and its driving fine as long as its maintained and serviced its drives normal

Brian does these reviews so shockingly well. Keep it up, good sir.
He truly does 😊

LogicTech He says, with a red car in his profile picture.
2:17 why is the radio GREEN?
why would you be distracted it doesn't have shit
I own the 2014 Jetta TDI Value Edition, the interior is pretty much identical to the one in here, I love the driving dynamics, and the very simple design of the interior of the car.
Personally I'd get either a Gen 4 or Gen 5 Jetta, much better looking cars IMO.
It's made in Mexico. 👎👎
You can change the odo on the end of the windshield wiper handle
I drove the TipTronic and it responded instantly to shifting inputs. It's nice!
Cooley bitchez!!!
2014 Mazda 3 is sooo much better than this
Endlessly better...
Yeah, I'd get a 3 too.
I bought a 2012 mazda3 over this car, big mistake tbh.
camshaft53149 Tried a 2014? They're fantastic! Their not miles ahead of the Jetta though. They placed the Jetta 3rd on the compact car list next to the Focus and new 3 in car and driver. Such a simple and clean car. Going to buy 2014 comfortline 2.0 soon

How's the reliability on those engines? Just wondering

They way VDubb packages it's trim levels is crazy. They should just do some sort of base with the ability to add SINGLE upgrades.
I don’t know why I’m watching this in 2023 but my wife and I have a 2014 VW Jetta SE 1.8 (automatic) and it came with a push to start, digital radio/head unit and a sunroof. I don’t know why this car looks is so bland in the video but ours is great and looks totally different

very good engine for a compact car. pretty boring car though
these things are fun to mod
The 2.5L Jetta is one of the most reliable Jettas to date
volkswagen is a class and u could relate it to toyota of Germany.......u need this car as a commuter vehicle to get you from point a to b....For me it's a homemade food, boring yet healthy and reliable :)
Except they aren't even close to reliable....
Jetta SE (simple edition) bleh
WTF? Is this a 2008 jetta review? This car is so yesterday!

Why radio screen is black from front and green from side?
iBrian camera glitches
stupid car...

Behold.. The king of bland cars
Sadly I have to agree with you there😔
yeah ok if you wanna pay $500 for an fuel or water pump. European cars can get expensive in the state. i'd get the diesel one instead
VW have lost their way. This car is genuinely dismal compared with the VW of previous years. Even the little details, such as the glossy black upper grille and matte (unpainted) black lower grille. All these crappy foreign cars look the same expensive electrical junk just a headache and expensive repair pulse I'm a mechanic screw buying parts for that u just buy a new car hahaha
I may have missed it but you failed to note the return of multi link rear suspension across trim levels.....a huge selling point in my book!
German cars are unreliable with pricey parts

The Jetta cheaped out TERRIBLY in 2011.. BUT at least they give me my overhead bus handle..
VW... Kings of bland style. Drives like you think it would...barely.
Consumer Reports rated the new Jetta's reliability high. The fact that you can get a turbocharged 1.8 Engine with manual transmission for this price is impressive.
Damn, that looks cheap rental....did they just give up?
Looks nice , not happy with no temp gauge . They should have full instrumentation instead of those stupid info screens in the dash .
I have a 2013 SE w/ convenience. I absolutely love the car, but my biggest regret is deciding to go with the automatic; I find myself driving around in tiptronic all of the time. It just feels like something is missing...I agree with Cooley, get the stick.
Toyta Corola best Auto Jetta 0 toyta 10
Wait... A 1.8 turbo with a 5 Spd..... Old tech again!!!!!!!!
We chose the Jetta in its SEL form with the 1.8T in black with tan interior. What a great handling, solid vehicle. Yes, in its SEL form the car is more stylish and has a nicer interior.
One thing that wasn't mentioned is the auto transmission cars get 199 ft/lb of torque, vs the 184 on the stick.
VW makes great cars but the interior of this car is awful also throw in some rims instead of those god forsaken hubcaps!
Mr CNET the trip is on right (the same stick you use for the windshield)
For my first good car I want something nice looking and in the small to medium size. Any suggestions?
Terrible car
There's a toggle on the right side stalk so you don't have to go thru the clock.
Mine 2001 infinity i30 still a beast never broke down
Looks good, but wagon should be based on this jetta not old one
Coolie your age is showing dude. LOL!
Ugly for nowadays design cars!!!!!!

Can anyone tell me if this car is reliable
Me and my family own this car
"I, wrench or SOS" lmfao hahaha
Look more like older gen ***** #camry
Shit, get the TDI instead
oh wow it not saying anything
Volkswagen is a little better than the other crappy German cars.
What would be "Other Crappy German Cars"?
How offensive Erick Gomez ?
this is the exact same as my 2012 Jetta se...c'mon VW gimme something new!!!
Its still the same generation of car, you can't criticize them! BTW they have made many imrprovements ie: soft touch dash, independent rear suspension, new 1.8t motor, and CarNet. Looks the same, but it isn't.
just bought one! love it!!!
looks like crap.
that's all you need
Great, i want ipad
fantastic Jetta!!!!
excellent Jetta!!!!
Why did vw make the passat if they have the jetta. They are almost the same but the passat is a bit better with barely any price difference.
The Passat has the analog clock, making it decidedly for old people. The Jetta TSI is for the confident driver who loves driving but has to take passengers in back routinely. The Golf is for the singles and childless loners who love driving. ;-)
Passat is mid sized, Volkswagen is compact
ReachCarter.... Passat more complaint..... American build..... Go for jetta... More reliable comparatively
Ho
Im sorry but the vw just looks sooo boring.
+Saad Qureshi It drives boring too.
