Tora Tora's Wild America was an amazing follow-up. Surprise Attack was an awesome debut and they managed to top it. The songwriting went up a notch.

Faster Pussycat Wake Me When It’s Over was head and shoulders above their debut . The Rhythm section was like a freight train . Opening Track , that rumble into that big pocket riff . Poison Ivy , Tattoo and Slip of the Tongue . Arizona Indian Doll and Please Dear , and of course House Of Pain . The greatest sophomore album ever , Black Crowes Southern Harmony and Musical Companion.

In no particular order: GNR Lies, Van Halen II, Shout at the Devil, Wake Me Up When It’s Over, Cherry Pie, Ride the Lightning, Screw it. Those are that come to mind right now.

I was surprised out of those 3 stadium tour bands, on the US billboard top 10 hits, Motley only had 2, Def Lep. had 4, but Poison had 6

Personally, at a young age, when I saw "You're mama don't dance" by Poison for the first time, it shocked me, I immediately fell in deeper love with rock n' roll, an inspiration to play guitar seriously, beyond air guitar, to learn. It's like listening to the energy of Little Richard in the glam genre, a return and a nod to the sources, their love for rock n' roll from the 50s and 60s, etc. For me this song differentiates them from the rest of the other bands of the time, their swag and their sense of humor were just perfect. It's like Van Halen or Aerosmith or Led Zep paying homage to their influences. You're mama don't dance brings lightness and fun to pacing, releasing sound with a good cover, it's an excellent version. Afterwards of course all tastes are different, but seeing these groups pay homage to the roots going back to the blues and more, I find it inspiring and educational.

One of my favorite second albums was, tooth and nail from dokken. Let me explain, into the fire, you just got lucky, alone again, are at least three of the nine tracks that brought them to the rockers they became. So that’s my case for my pick, much better than breaking the chains.!!

Another great episode guys, thanks. Guru, knowing your professed love for Warrant, I suggest you listen to Norwegian hard rock band Faith Circus… stream the tune King of the Hill from their 2024 release Bun In The Sun, I’m pretty sure I’ll be down your alley. 🍻

Great lists guys. I was a little nervous that there was no Crue or Def Leppard but then I heard your Honorable Mentions.
Unless I missed it, the only one I would add is Dokken's Tooth & Nail.

Maybe too soon but you and Bryan should do a top ten/twelve songs you would have on a ultimate hair metal album. I guess like a best of/compilation of hair metal? It would be cool to see you guys try and figure out of all the songs you like from the era and what would make a top album. I can even help a bit, I am sure a Ratt ,a Lilian AXE and a Warrent song would make it on the list :p

I have a few albums for your approval:
    Firehouse - Hold your Fire
    Giant - Time to Burn
    Damn Yankees - Don't Tread
    Bad English - Backlash
Mr Big - Lean into it
Keep it up! (The programme quality)

I'm doing the opposite sitting here trying to think of glam bands where the second album was not as good as the first since all of my faves had great follow-ups and it's hard to find a band that had a disappointing follow-up . Poison, Cinderella, Shotgun Messiah, Motley Crue, Slaughter, Southgang, Winger, Warrant, LA Guns, Dokken, Ratt, Danger Danger, White Lion, Tora Tora, Bon Jovi, Faster Pussycat all had outstanding second albums. I guess I would pick Bulletboys as a band where I prefer the debut over the second album, even though the second album (Freakshow) isn't bad. Tuff is another band where I definitely prefer the debut.

Id like to know what Warrants 2nd album wouldve sounded like if Bruce Fairbairn had produced it, probably all that you talked about the way it should have been.

that southgang record is fantastic. i think jesse harte would have worked okay in warrant as they had him and the singer from apocolyptica pegged to replace lane in 1993.
i think its hard to beat van halen 2 and cherry pie for sophomore records. both are without fault.

… Man I left out Long Cold Winter , what a Cinderella Monster . I thought Wild Life by Slaughter was often overlooked. I think Open Up Say Ah , is often overrated , compared to Cat .

Great lists, gentlemen. Going purely off my personal opinion, not sales or popularity, I have a couple of oddball sophomore efforts in mind to throw out there.
    SLEEZE BEEZ - Powertool
BLACK N' BLUE - Without Love
I really enjoyed both. Keep this awesome content flowing Guru...It's good stuff. Thanks for the watch. Take care & I hope Bryan is feeling better !!

Uncle Tom’s Cabin was Warrant’s redemption song for me. I never cared that much for them. For my personal taste they always seemed a little too airbrushed and fluffy. BUT. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was badass. It may be time for me to seek out their deeper cuts.

  • @ARONHALLAM

I agree with that. A few albums are still good and a bit different but I'm not sure any are better than the first., perhaps oriental beat..... Errol Flynn,Slave to grind, wasted in America arre good follow ups . I remember' bittersweet and twisted' really disppointed me as a kid.

Here’s the thing about those LA Guns records… they were both certified gold like 6 months after they came out and never been certified again. Those albums haven’t sold another copy since 6 months after they released? Just going from cassette to cd since then should have put them platinum.
