I'm a guitar teacher. One of my students (for the last 10 years or so) is THE Megadeth fan. We've learned most of Dave's catalog, including many of the finger busting solos of Marty, Chris, and Kiko. Over the time working on these songs, my student and I have bonded over Dave's genius time and time again. My student is now writing his own music fueled by the pure, unfiltered guitar lightbeam that Dave has shown us... and it makes me so proud. Also, I wanted to mention what a class act Dave is. My student recently met Dave at a Megadeth show. The picture they took together didn't turn out the best. Dave heard about this and sent my student some signed picks and strings from a show. Dave also said he would set up another meet and greet to get a better picture 🎸
I met Dave waaay back during the Clash of the Titans tour at Star Lake Amphitheatre in Burggetstown, PA. We had before meet and greet in a hospitality tent. Its a great memory, one I'll never forget! 💯👍🤘🎸🎶

In a parallel universe there's a dude named Dave Mightaine who had talent but never had the drive to succeed. Dave MUSTaine is different - he's as driven as it gets. He told himself he MUST succeed and you betcha he did.
It’s what separates a lot of ppl. It’s the drive that most don’t have and they sit around and wonder why am I not where I wanna be? Point being I agree
Dave Mustaine was the name I used a few times in Highschool when I got in trouble with the cops as a teenager 1987. We were pretty crazy back then....Then.... I got arrested and had to tell them my " Real Name " 😬
@@JB-lp9xr You better not use that name if you can't shred! I always used the name of a former friend I ended up hating. I knew his adress, so when you pretend to have forgotten your ID, the cops here check the adress of the name you provide. Worked a bunch of times, usually it was just a warning nothing big so they where satisfied with noting my name. In return I didn't snitch on him once when he committed a major crime that didn't hurt anyone (he blew up a trash can with his illegal firecrackers and the cops thought it was a bomb and closed down the entire neighbourhood.) I had to drive through and there was like 100 cops. I asked them what happened and they told me to move along there's been a bomb. Saw the destroyed trash can in front of his house and I immediately knew who it was...).
@@Greg-w9j those years of '87-'90 were likely his most drug-fueled. Ellefson lived in place on Cherokee that same period with a broad. Was it this apt? You see him too? Also sober?
In 1987 I was a new concert security guy at the Bakersfield Civic Auditorium. Alice Cooper was headlining and Megadeth was opening. My buddy and I were walking around before the doors opened and suddenly there’s this guy with magnificent red hair in front of us, shaking our hands. “Hi, I’m Dave!” I’ve loved him ever since. That was the first and last show I got to throw someone out of the orchestra pit.
Megadeath is one of the GOATS in metal. I saw them in Daytona Beach in this little club. What struck me was many of the people in the bar were smoking crack and they weren't even being suttle about it. The police inside didn't even care that this was going on. That's my Megadeath experience.
Love Megadeth. Maybe my favorite band of all time. I discovered them in my youth during the early 2000s when they were having a resurgence. Saw them in 2005-2006 for the Gigantour. Dave Mustaine's voice was out, disappointing BUT I got exposed to their opening act, Dream Theater, during Dream Theater's peak. What a f***ing show! The crowd was so hot for Dream Theater they got an encore, lucky me.
Man I gotta give them another chance. A friend of mine growing up, we we're both big shredding fans, he more Steve Vai me more into the doughnut hater and he always insisted I would love Dream Theater but kinda never got into it. I am very aware of Petrucci though, watched a few interviews and I like him a lot and his playing is insane.
Not the first time I'm hearing 'On through the night' in relation to early Metallica, Def Leppard was a very different band in those years and they started out very young
I'm LOVING this!!!! Wow I've got to go to that place. Dave, incredible man! It would be a dream come true to walk that store with you. I had that Aces High album a long with my Megadeth albums and Metallica. One album I always loved was Iron Maiden Live After Death. Me and a friend used to go to album stores back in England and we would get Maiden albums, shirts, patches, then would go home and listen to them together. God I loved those days!! Just a few years later I was in Scotland with Bruce Dickinson. That was incredible! Hey Dave I'm friends with Mike and Kathy L. Keep Rockin' hard man 🤘🥁🤘DC
Great top 5!! Very interesting to see Dave talk about his early influences. Great episode, and he even gave a shout out to Appetite for Destruction, which realistically should be in everyone's Top 5 haha!
Love the knowledge and the fact that this rock icon appreciated the early Leppard. Cool. Cos those new wave metal British bands were so influential to the powerhouses of the likes that come out a few years later in the states.
I love that he discussed "the riff". Something you don't hear as much in metal anymore is a really good RIFF, like you did in the 70s and 80s. What people often called riffs now aren't really such, they're still mostly part of the accompaniment. For something to be a riff, it's gotta have a melody to it, a quality that counterpoints with the underlying chords--regardless of whether it's a single-note thing or if it's a chord progression. The opening chords to Highway to Hell is a riff because those chords form a melody in them. Seek and Destroy's opening phrase is a definitive riff..again, it's got a melody. When you hear all the "butt-rock" on the radio or typewriter stuff, there aren't a lot of true riffs in there.
@@JB-lp9xr well it goes back to the melodic element, but you're spot-on. A major reason I have a hard time getting into most of the metal now, is just like you said: there's so much MUSH. It's all loaded up with atmospheric effects and I can't headbang to that shit. I hate to say it, but Devin Townsend is one of those artists I struggle with, Jinjer, Spiritbox and all that stuff, Lorna Shore. Super talented, but every song is just SLATHERED in reverb. I'm definitely no purist by any means, but there's just too much shit going on in a lot of these bands' songs. I'd rather be listening to Lady Lightning by Picture or Motorcycle Man by Saxon.
I joined a symphonic metal band and I've been injecting some good riffing to make it interesting. Been ripping of the best of the 80s. Some power chords a few fiddly bits to make it like a melody and a few thirds instead of just piwer chords to add flavour. They look at me like I'm some sort of genius but I just listen to a bunch of Ratt and Dokken and all that and do my best impression. :) Bit more interesting than open E chugging. Which a lot of metal is these days. That's why I like death metal despite not being a big fan of the vocals. They still got awesome riffs. Kinda mixing the clichee 000000000 with some melodic elements. But yeah Ratt is great. Like you say if you can recognise the song by hearing the riff it's good. I think half my riffs are blatant imitations of "What you give is what you get" and a few Dokken songs. I add my Sabbath influence for some doomy sounding stuff and make sure to rip off some melodies from Bach and Mozart and voilà, awesome riffs that I can play all day long and headbang until my lovely neighbourhood cops show up to admire my Marshall and issue a threat. :) I think I know all of them now. The highlight was a super beautiful female cop who played guitar making suggestions on ehat frequencies to cut so it didn't make the entire apartment complex shape. But if you're raising the volume every few minutes beyond the point of pain and near uncontrolled feedback you know you have a banger! But often I get the vocal melody first and I can make a chord progression for that but I've been struggling to turn chord progressions into riffs without it sounding obvious that that's what I'm trying. Been ripping off Hendrix too, just play the chords and add a few moving parts to make it a different chord and a few fiddly bits in between. Of course I don't want to exaggerate my talent for riffs since this Friday someone will buy my first and only Marshall to pay for rent. So definetly still doing the pizza boy thing but we got some studio time booked and a few gigs. I could really use some cash... and thankfully none of them listen to Yngwie Malmsteen so my aweful impressions of him for leads has been turning a lot of heads. If anyone remembered the 80s my playing would be extremely unimpressive but most don't so I'm good. I shall soon be ripping off Randy Rhoads as well.
Amazing!! Two massively under-appreciated contributors to their fields of expertise. Eric is a wonderfully insightful interviewer, because of how he gives the guest their space to speak, he’s also not shy to mention his pro wrestling career, major player in TNA
the energy that he put forth stuns me every single time. ...what a blessing he has been, and continues to be. I saw Megadeth play live in like.. 2014... and.. they just released Fatal Illusion, and .... I just couldn't get over how awesome it was to hear them play with Kiko Loureiro even though I wished it was Marty Friedman in the band. ...I just don't understand why Marty couldn't be part of Megadeth, but I have a feeling alcohol and feelings got involved and eventually doing pop songs was therapy for him and that's why he moved to Japan. If I'm wrong, call me out, but, I listen to classical music when I can't tolerate modern music any longer and vice versa... so.. thngs can fluctuate and people can change What still impresses me is the sound that the flying v made with that amp cranked.. what a gorgeous time to be alive.
And untimely. He was starting to get a little bit of attention and the Maiden guys where beginning to talk to him a little more, I was hoping for some collaborations or something and then suddenly he was gone. Along with Number of the Beast, the first two albums are my favourite. I'm not a huge Maiden fanatic anymore but I still love those albums.
Agreed, and RIP Clive Burr he was much better and faster by far than Nicko. The music changed after Steve asked Clive to leave, the guy's dad died and needed time away, Steve said no
Needs to be an asterisk next to that particular Diamond Head record: Get the original 1980 version with Sean Harris, that re-recording is awful, get the original.
It's a bit confusing, but that artwork is just a reissue of the original album, and it is the version with Sean Harris. It is just remastered. The re-recording has a mainly white album cover, in a sort of homage to the original self-released version. I don't mind it, and Ras is a really great vocalist, but I can understand people not enjoying that sort of thing. To further muddy the waters, the little audio clip they played of Am I Evil was from the re-recording with Ras!
This man created Rust in Peace
For many, there is nothing even close.

His voice is amazing
Love ya Dave! Looking forward to seeing you again. Haven't for a while now
AND I have plenty of boots from 77 where Page fkn smokes anything you could ever hope to do bro! 😁✌🏻(but yeah, he was having trouble on that tour. You went thru your times too ;)
Saw Megadeth for the 4th time, fall 2024 in St Louis. They ripped it up. Note for Note. Like the albums were being played. It was everything a metal show should be. Mad respect for Dave and the current lineup. Dirk is the best drummmer they ever had and thats not a knock against the others. The dude is just that good. Teemu is as good of a guitarist as theyve had and thats saying something. Man can he rip it clean. James L is also a legend. Great bassist.
Dave is the real I discovered Metal. He is the guy. And Megadeth are the band 🤘🤘🤘
Killing is my business has such a cool demo-esque sound and enthousiasm it is still my favourite
that first deth LP was not totally original now that i know more, look into Texas speed/power metal bands demos/LP's that never made it big
but yah, that debut still is better than EVERYTHING else they did
I got that aces high pic my sisters boyfriend from England lucky to have in Australia in the late 80's,thanks dav
That's not the old maiden he's talking about. The first two records exp Killers is the best. 1980-82 After number of the beast it wasn't the same. Eddie had long hair easy to recognize put it that way
In a parallel universe there's a dude named Dave Mightaine who had talent but never had the drive to succeed.
Dave MUSTaine is different - he's as driven as it gets. He told himself he MUST succeed and you betcha he did.
Clever!
@@Stevie-Steele corny
Theres also a guy names Dave Mustard Staine who has mustard stains on his clothes
It’s what separates a lot of ppl. It’s the drive that most don’t have and they sit around and wonder why am I not where I wanna be? Point being I agree
Deep!
Megadeth Forever..
Dave Mustaine was the name I used a few times in Highschool when I got in trouble with the cops as a teenager 1987. We were pretty crazy back then....Then.... I got arrested and had to tell them my " Real Name "
😬
hahahahahaha bro
I was Paul Dianno in my high school yearbook
@@JB-lp9xr You better not use that name if you can't shred! I always used the name of a former friend I ended up hating. I knew his adress, so when you pretend to have forgotten your ID, the cops here check the adress of the name you provide. Worked a bunch of times, usually it was just a warning nothing big so they where satisfied with noting my name. In return I didn't snitch on him once when he committed a major crime that didn't hurt anyone (he blew up a trash can with his illegal firecrackers and the cops thought it was a bomb and closed down the entire neighbourhood.)
I had to drive through and there was like 100 cops. I asked them what happened and they told me to move along there's been a bomb. Saw the destroyed trash can in front of his house and I immediately knew who it was...).
nice smile. dave is the man
the thumbnail shows General Mustaine but when a press play i said “ i know that voice?” godamn Eric Young.wrestling and metal goes hand in hand 🤘
Huge fan. This band is so talented and under-appreciated for the true genius's they are!
Saw them in September, 2024 in Michigan. They sounded phenomenal. Vocally, musically perfect.
oh yeah
Thank you dave your music saved my life
Metal, wrestling, vinyl. My 3 favorite things.
Chicken pot pie the three for me
Early def leopard is amazing. Great to hear him say it.
In 1988 Dave lived on Cherokee at the Santa Fe apartments just down the street from Sunset Sound. I would see him in the elevator. Quiet dude.
Too geeked out to talk. Elevators are especially tough when you're high.
@@toddmorrissey8372 he seemed sober.
@Greg-w9j I seemed sober in my twenties. Spoilers I wasn't.
@@Greg-w9j those years of '87-'90 were likely his most drug-fueled. Ellefson lived in place on Cherokee that same period with a broad. Was it this apt? You see him too? Also sober?
Yeah 1988 he was really fucked up
Age has made him a hippie. Love you dave. Keep promoting peace and love man.
What's a Hippie
In 1987 I was a new concert security guy at the Bakersfield Civic Auditorium. Alice Cooper was headlining and Megadeth was opening. My buddy and I were walking around before the doors opened and suddenly there’s this guy with magnificent red hair in front of us, shaking our hands. “Hi, I’m Dave!” I’ve loved him ever since.
That was the first and last show I got to throw someone out of the orchestra pit.
Seen that concert in joe Louis arena in Detroit, Michigan was my first concert…awesome show it was coops constrictor album tour 2-13-1987
Megadeath is one of the GOATS in metal. I saw them in Daytona Beach in this little club. What struck me was many of the people in the bar were smoking crack and they weren't even being suttle about it. The police inside didn't even care that this was going on. That's my Megadeath experience.
@@user-tv1le7sw2l there’s no ‘A’ in Megadeth.
@blahzay_ don't blame me, blame Grammerly. So much for AI.
"Ides of Wrath" is my fav Maiden song too, DAVE!!!!
The Ides of March
Killers was the best record by far Dave's right
This was so much more fun to watch than Steve-O's Wildride.
I seen Mega death a few times back in high school at the Mesa Ampitheather in Mesa, AZ. What a great time! Thanks Dave!
In Dave we TRUST!!!
thank you dave for taking the time to share also
Him picking def leppard actually shocked me, I was expecting something like Budgie or UFO 😭
Not the first time I'm hearing 'On through the night' in relation to early Metallica, Def Leppard was a very different band in those years and they started out very young
Leppard had cooler album covers! Lol
Good to see Eric Young on a TV screen doing his thing
Great show with Dave, thanks for video. 🙂
I could listen to Dave Mustaine talk all day every day!! True gentleman genius, loved this show!!!! 🔥🤘🏼🎧🖤
hahahha loved every bit of this, didnt feel like a podcast but a talkshow. old school..love it. Mustaine is forever young \,,/
Def Leppard's Rock Brigade the solo in that song is still top 5 for me 40 plus years later
The Song Remains The Same is one of the best live albums ever
Anything AC/DC is beyond legend
Thanks for this, I am disappointed however that you didn't really talk to Dave about his thoughts on Vinyl as a medium overall.
I love dave giving metallica and guns n roses there props when daves in a good mood hes a teddy bear
Great top 5!! Very interesting to see Dave talk about his early influences. Great episode, and he even gave a shout out to Appetite for Destruction, which realistically should be in everyone's Top 5 haha!
I really like how Dave has matured over the years. I am super happy for him!
Love the knowledge and the fact that this rock icon appreciated the early Leppard. Cool. Cos those new wave metal British bands were so influential to the powerhouses of the likes that come out a few years later in the states.
Dave’s always Real, Honest and who he is is who you get. No BS or poser crap
Love Dave and Megadeth - Greetings from Germany
What a great idea for a podcast. I wish I had a record shop.
LEGEND I LOVE YOU DAVE
Amazing!! Two massively under-appreciated contributors to their fields of expertise. Eric is a wonderfully insightful interviewer, because of how he gives the guest their space to speak, he’s also not shy to mention his pro wrestling career, major player in TNA
Great Band, Symphony of Destruction my fav
the energy that he put forth stuns me every single time. ...what a blessing he has been, and continues to be. If I'm wrong, call me out, but, I listen to classical music when I can't tolerate modern music any longer and vice versa... so.. thngs can fluctuate and people can change
What still impresses me is the sound that the flying v made with that amp cranked.. what a gorgeous time to be alive.
Rest in Peace Paul Dianno. What a singer.
The music changed after Steve asked Clive to leave, the guy's dad died and needed time away, Steve said no
@@m42037 That sounds like Steve. Between the manager and Steve, Paul once said it was like working for Mussolini and Hitler..

Love ya Dave...thanks for everything...live long and prosper
This was awesome, love DM!
3:11 The Metallica shot for Am I Evil is pretty insulting lol
Was not expecting this to be so awesome. Respect.
High n Dry is amazing. Ballads and pop success killed an amazing rock band... Dave picked 5 great ones.
Great interview, haven't heard a few of those stories!
14:10 Dave taking his time to make sure and use neutral nomenclature when speaking about Northern Ireland... unlike that other time!

More of this please!🙏😉💪👍🫡✌️
That's not the rerecorded version it's just a different cover.
@@shaynewest8757 Oh ok I didnt know, I think they played the rerecording and it sounded shit.
Yeah that's the most current reissue but sadly the track they played was 2020 Evil@@TheGreatBaronOBeefDip
