Thank you for your videos! I have a first round interview tomorrow and have been watching them all week. I wanted to ask you a question I can't seem to find an answer for.
What can you say if the interviewer asks if you are interested in a lower level position they have available? I want the higher level position, but in the event I am not selected, I would accept the lower level position. I just don't want to ruin my chances of getting the higher level position. Thoughts?

I appreciate your candor and transparency on this topic. It is what a lot of us being hired or hiring feel. I have found, the less scripted and less templatized my interviews are, the more the applicants are real and spontaneous. It shows more of who you are actually hiring.

I’m glad you did this. The question of ‘Tell me about yourself?’ has always been, to me, a disheartening question. My frustrated response, is usually a poised, ‘what more specifically would you like to know?’ As, I don’t want to ramble about a multitude of self reflective aspects, that potentially are way off subject or off of their goal. The worst is when they respond...’I just want you to respond with what you’re comfortable with.’ To me, I stop wanting to work for this company at that very moment. It’s a lousy question, and usually reflects a potentially lousy work environment. I’m interviewing them, just as much as they’re interviewing me, and they either don’t care about that, or don’t think that way, but interviewers nowadays are truly devoid of the values that make a human a resource.

According to me, this is the best video on your channel. PERIOD.
True that some of these questions do not make sense at all. And recruiting team/agents/manager/officers have no clue about the technical aspect of the job. I've seen it multiple times. THANK YOU.

Love this because you're giving the read between the lines when it comes to job search process and the whole system of it 👍🏻
Would love to hear more of your thought process about the trends of job seeking. Another good topic is maybe talk about the traditional historical version of how employers & employees did job seeking versus nowadays 2021

OMG I feel seen. I'm watching this video at 3am my time and I'm screaming "finally sees the problem I've always faced". Job interviews feel like hunting to me these days. A rite of passage I have to do to prove I can do a job but which say nothing about my ability to deliver said job. Watching your videos has been amazing. I'm glad you started doing this. Please never stop. I hope the interview process changes someday. Sooner than later.

I also love your breakdown of how difficult the question is for introverts, and technically-minded people. It's something I struggled with at first, because I would give a brief look at my background and include things that didn't pertain to the job I was applying for - which regularly took me out of the running. I didn't understand why my honestly answering the question disqualified me until I saw your videos, and talked with a recruiter.
As someone going through the job hunting process, I find the usual cut-and-paste practices rather deceitful, or pointless at the very least. They rarely give the applicant a chance to actually make a case for themselves; and when they do, the framing is incredibly narrow. To use a personal example, I'm self-taught in a lot of the things I do at my job, and I wear a ton of hats - something I'd think most employers would find very valuable. However, there's little room to convey that to recruiters and hiring managers - or it gets used against me since they see it as too "jack of all trades".
Anyway, just my thoughts on the process in general - with some personal anecdote thrown in.

You are absolutely correct. I have personally exprienced what you explained beautifully in such a short video. I used to think I was lacking some skills when being asked "tell me about yourself" right at the start of my interviews. As you hinted one must know how to answer those type of questions to reach, hopefully, to higher stages and be able to present his technical qualifications to the right audience. I have been very frustrated and insulted as you mentined. Thank you for your efforts in educating job seekers. God bless.

I personally loved the subject and the length of the video. Context matters. For an in-depth video, I would not make it shorter like some people suggest. Listen, it is completely okay to have some short videos and some long ones on your channel. Just because some people are unable to focus for the whole duration of your video, DOES NOT mean the length of the video was not justified. It sounds like a personal problem if you think about it. Some topics are better suited for shorter durations, others like this one, that was more of a podcast style, would suffer from being too short. Do not feel pressured, at least when it comes to length of your videos, to be a specific duration. More like this please!

I ask this all the time as a hiring manager. I will frame it up for them. If they have gotten to me they are obviously qualified for the job, I am looking for things like culture fit, etc. So I'll say something like, "I have read your resume it's very impressive so we will get to that in a moment, but I would love for you tell me who you are off the resume. What gives you energy and what motivates you"?

I totally agree that it is an insulting question. My job is to be ready to show why I qualify for the job, and the HR's job is to read my CV before the interview. In my current living as an IB I never meet anyone without researching him/her and the company represented prior to the meeting. Sometimes I know the company better than the guy in the seat. I think that people in HR should show at least the same level of respect for their job avoiding stupid questions.

I agree with you completely. I had an interview where they asked me the same question over and over. (Why should we hire you?. I answered the way you said. They asked again later on in the interview.) So I understood I wasn't answering their underlying question but I still didn't know what to say. It was a long interview and ten minutes in, I knew the interview was sour and I wanted to leave, but didn't want a poor reputation. There were no HR persons there but they acted just like HR with non technical questions trying to figure out 'Who I am' with questions like "What do you do in your free time?' and 'Show me /Tell me something that represents you?'. By the time it was time to ask my questions (I did have 5 questions for them), I didn't care about the answers. It's almost like they are looking for friends because work is their entire life. They don't have a balance between work, friends, family, faith, hobbies, charity, etc. They want to get all their social needs from work.

I relate to your frustrations, and I am on the autism spectrum. I am also an introvert. I have studied and earned credentials through rigerous examinations but struggle with some social ques. I have been denied a few roles because they doubt my ability to lead and manage people (although I've done this successfully at other employers) because of my autism. I'm fully qualified and have verifiable experience but still get looked over. Not discounting any of the success I've had up to this point in my career with this same employer, but they're hung up on this one fact. It's annoying and not logical. It is very difficult for me as an INTJ-A personality type, too. 😅

Sometimes it feels like this question is just a way to filter out anyone with autism. I don't think the employers are actually putting much thought into it, but the challenges you mentioned are even more challenging if your on the autism spectrum.
I feel like I need a default answer for this question, so I can get past it quickly, and move on to the other questions, but it's basically a question where you need to research what is actually being asked, and then memorize how to respond.
Out of curiosity, would it be possible to ask an employer to be more specific with this question, or to come back to that question later in the interview? Or would they see that as a red flag?
