For a female to sing a song about female empowerment in those days was pretty revolutionary. She helped kick the wall down, at least a little bit. RIP Girl

I love Leslie Gore. Recommend It's My Party then Judy's Turn To Cry which is the second part.
It's My Party was her first hit at age 16 in 1963. She was born in NYC. She released You Don't Own Me at age 17. She died of lung cancer in 2015.

This was groundbreaking in the early 1960’s. Most songs the girls were begging for the guys attention.

Lesley Gore is from Brooklyn. She and her brother Michael wrote a lot of the music for the movie “Fame”. She was also a prominent lesbian activist.

Lesley recorded You Don't Own Me for her 2nd Mercury album, Lesley Gore Sings of Mixed-up Hearts, released in the fall of 1963. The song went to #2 on the Billboard chart in February 1964. There are several versions of this song: 1) single version in mono, single tracked vocal; 2) album version with double tracked vocal inside echo booth; 3) updated version featured on the album, Forever Seventeen: Lesley Gore Meets Bobby Vee (an album from Japan). Lesley has stated she felt this was a humanistic song, not necessarily a woman 's lib song. Also from her 2nd album was Hello Young Lover (You Ain't Gonna Get To My Heart).

Sad to say, there are men even today that believe and/or treat their girlfriends/wives/sisters/women in general as if they are inferior and should do/believe/act as they tell them to. This song was so ahead of it’s time in the early 60’s. Awesome song and Lesley Gore killed it.

You gotta watch "The girls on the beach" featuring her and The Beach Boys. 1965 was a different time.

Think they should make a movie about her soon? There's romance of the story as well, she and her partner Lois Sasson (jewellery designer and gay rights activist) met in the 80s and were together for 33 years up until Lesley Gore's death in 2015. I don't think we get enough stories about musicians who had long and stable relationships, most of them seem to be about musicians going through at least two divorces
