This song came out in the 60’s. It was NOT a message anyone was putting out there at the time so bluntly. Much respect to her, she was not old but older here and still sounded amazing.

Lesley Gore, was an American singer, songwriter & actress. At the age of 16, she recorded this pop hit "It's My Party" in 1963. She followed it up with many more hits including "Judy's Turn to Cry" ,"You Don't Own Me", "That's the Way Boys Are", "Maybe I Know", "Look of Love" & "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows". Sadly she died in 2015.

She spoke her mind I a time when women were often thought of as accessories to a man's possessions.

Lesley has said she always considered You Don't Own Me as a humanistic song. No one owns anyone. From Lesley's 1963 album, Lesley Gore Sings of Mixed-Up Hearts. The song went to the #2 spot on Billboard's hot 100. Lesley has also recorded it in French (Je Ne Sais Plus); German (Goodbye Tony); and Italian. All versions are on UA-cam. She also recorded an updated version on her 2005 album, EVER SINCE. Two guys wrote the song. (Madera and White).

Quincy Jones was her vocal producer.
Closeted lesbian, RIP beautiful Leslie. "Maybe I Know" is my favorite song. First girl power song.

    • @lamb92
      @lamb92 2 роки тому +5

She stated that she was actually never closeted, she was always out to her friends, family and work colleagues from the age of about 22, she just never discussed it with the media until the early 2000s. She said once "how can I come out when I've never been in" 😅👍🏻 she lived her life unapologetically and she was a beautiful person inside and out

Wow. She was so pretty. Anyway, songs. Her first #1 hit (she was 16); produced by Quincy Jones (his first #1 hit) is a song called It's My Party. It's a lot of fun. Follow it up with Judy's Turn to Cry for the full effect.

You would have to know the history of women ~ how they were controlled by men ~ in order to understand why this song was so great in the 1960's. It was really difficult for women to be as free and in control of their own lives back then.

When she sang it as a young girl, she sounded more innocent. Now that she's had a few years under her belt, and a few relationships, she's singing it from the heart, She know and understands what she's singing about

One of the earliest songs about female empowerment from the early 60s, just as the modern feminist movement was beginning. This performance is from years later, after her popularity had faded.

Leslie Gore was kind of a one hit wonder, but what a power punch hit!!! It was used as the theme song from the movie "First Wives Club" in the 90s, a hilarious and touching drama/comedy.

From the same time period, see Stevie Wonder's first hit -- Fingertips, Part 2. The record version is online, as well as a few live performances.
The song is incredible and will have you jumping.
Here is the part that will floor you -- it was Stevie's first hit -- when he was TWELVE. You have never seen a twelve year old like that.

Lesley Gore was so ahead of her time she was 17 at the time this came out in 1963 a few months after her first hit It's my party. Here she's standing up to a man trying to make her his property as it was at that time. Of course Lesley never had a husband she was a lesbian though she did find the love of her life Lois Sasson in 1982 and stayed with her for 33 years until Lesley's death from lung cancer in 2015 at the age of 68. They were planing there wedding for summer 2015 sadly Lesley got sick and passed on February 16 2015. Lois passed in 2020.

I've not seen this version before.she did a fab job but it doesn't have the same impact as when she first did it back in the early 60's when she was 16 before women marched for equal rights and back when some men treated them like possessions this song was ahead of its time.when most girls were singing about wanting a guy to marry them.
This song was sung by Bette midler,Goldie hawn and Diane Keaton at the end of the first wives club.

In the 60s this was the equivalent to girl power, it's incredible when you think women would have to give up the jobs if they got pregnant and until the mid-70s banks wouldn't give women bank accounts or credit cards in their own names, they had to have their husband's permission.

Blind melon- candy says probably have to find it on yt and looks like vhs tape in thumbnail (because it was lol)at the very least you should be impressed by his voice or change(plenty more) candy says would be my recommendation but heavily underrated band because of their hit song no rain which really didn’t overshadowed them as the actual band they were.
-Miley Cyrus tendentious of Jolene originally by Dolly Parton both are good. True story about a women that stole her husband (dollys) also. Miley’s is amazing
    -The cars- drive

Love Lesley her voice and this song, if you want to listen to another new singer i would recommend Davina Michelle a young Dutch singer, her own song Liar! ua-cam.com/video/-5qcTioneLw/v-deo.html Davina became a well known singer because of P!NK , she did a cover of What about us ( the song of P!nk) and P!nk loved it so much she invited Davina to open her P!nk Beautiful Trauma World Tour in The Netherlands .
