Autotune wasn't invented yet, but they're going back and running old music through autotune, and rereleasing it--it's an abomination. I don't think that's what this is, but it's worth knowing they're ruining good music this way.
No autotune. The effect on her voice was achieved by having the artist re-record the track and laid out with the original as a second singer thus giving the final sound like two people singing. The Beatles were fond of this effect and used it quite extensively. It tends to give the sound more depth.
Actually it's tcalled automatic doubletracking (ADT), which means she sang it only once, but the machine recorded it twice with a short delay between both tracks, wich creates a fuller sound. Lennon especially was taken by this technique because it reminded him of Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel" and the early SUN records, which had a lot of echo on them.

@@boosuedon They used double tracking extensively in the early years, but it wasn’t automated. They had to sing the vocal part twice. Also cool, but I think just layering individual vocal performances sounds richer.
Lesley Gore, was an American singer, songwriter & actress. At the age of 16, she recorded this pop hit "It's My Party" in 1963. She followed it up with many more hits including "Judy's Turn to Cry" ,"You Don't Own Me", "That's the Way Boys Are", "Maybe I Know", "Look of Love" & "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows". It's my Party and You don't own Mr both came out in 1963 so Lesley Gore was 17 on both songs. I love her voice she has such a sweet voice. Sadly we lost Lesley Gore in 2015 at the tender age of 69.
She was just so cool! Love this song, and the attitude. Another great reaction. I like your commentary and your energy; nice job! "I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar" (Helen Reddy, early 1970s, a bit later than Gore's 1960s hit) but definitely another powerful anthem for the women's movement. An interesting trivia bit about Lesley Gore and her brother; they composed a bunch of the songs in the movie "Fame". Very talented duo. All the best.
Was no auto-tune when this was recorded. The "effect" you're hearing is Lesley singing in unison with herself. So, it's a doubled vocal. Overdubbing is a wonderful thing...
Leslie isn't auto-tuned. Her producer simply had her double her lead vocal, or sing the lead twice on separate tracks, with a slightly different EQ and reverb on the two lead vocal takes.
I'm not sure if it was on this song, or one of her others, but there was one time when they had to do a sneaky end run around the Musicians Union, there was a rule in New York that you could not double track the lead vocal, the Union required you to hire a second singer, the producer did not want anybody else's vocal on this track, so he snuck Leslie into the studio in the dark of night to lay down the second lead vocal track.
Hey! First one here! lol I remember my mom listening this song....used to hear it a lot as a kid! She sounds like she did on the studio version...so not sure if its auto tuned or not. This sort of sound was achieved by layering vocals over one another in the studio to create a slighty different sound but Leslie had a very powerful voice. The 60's and 70's were a time when artists and bands were experimenting with sounds they could make in the studio with voices and instruments. But if you didn't have a great voice to start with you just didn't cut it. Phil Specter created his 'wall of sound' in the sixties and in th eseventies ABBA experimented with multi track layering.

Lesley Gore was so ahead of her time she was 17 at the time this came out in 1963 a few months after her first hit It's my party. Here she's standing up to a man trying to make her his property as it was at that time. Of course Lesley never had a husband she was a lesbian though she did find the love of her life Lois Sasson in 1982 and stayed with her for 33 years until Lesley's death from lung cancer in 2015 at the age of 68. They were planing there wedding for summer 2015 sadly Lesley got sick and passed on February 16 2015. Lois passed in 2020.
Not even close. Lesley's 1960s hits were recorded for Mercury Records. Her first post-Mercury Lp was released by Motown in 1972- about 13 years after the Berry Gordy started the label with Marv Johnson's "Come To Me".
Remember that songs in those days had to be less than about 3 minutes (IIRC) long because that is all that would fit on a 45rpm vinyl disk. The versions on LP albums (long play--that is 33 1/3 rpm ) were sometimes longer.
She was 17 at the time. If you listen to just the recording it lasts longer. She was talking about the jerks who would date them and thought they own and disrespected them on a date. Pretty powerful singing from such a little girl. LOL!😎
Britt, you should react to Brenda Lee (Little Miss Dynamite) songs I'm Sorry, All Alone Am I, Break It To Me Gently, I Want To Be Wanted and so many more. And react to Connie Francis songs Who's Sorry Now, Lipstick on Your Collar, Where the Boys Are, Among My Souvenirs and so many more. Francis' song Mama will tear your heart out (even though most of it is in Italian).
She had all of her hits by age 18, before going off to college. By the time she returned to her career the Beatles and Motown had taken over, and her career never recovered. Similarly, Mary Weiss of the Shangri-La's had about 10 hits by age 17, when she quit the business and did not record another album for 40 years. Teenage girl singers with very short careers were not uncommon back then.
Yeah, a super cool cut! Looked it up, and she was 17!! WOW. Didn't know Quincy Jones produced it either... Autotune didn't come for a few decades yet, but yeah now that you mention it: interesting production choices on her vocals. They don't strike me as double-tracked, but maybe a "delay" put on, with lotsa reverb thrown around. Hmm, listening again: at the end there are things going on that maybe she does have a double-tracked vocal.
In 1963 when she recorded this, Lesli Gore was 17 years old. Back then teenage girls didn't think such things much less say them out loud. I don't know if this song started the feminist movement, but it should have.
There was no such thing as auto-tune (or even the word) in 1963 -- thank God!!! This was the result of a relatively new technique which, I believe, was referred to as multi-tracking, or over-dubbing, something like that, where the artist does two or more recordings and blends them together to where, in essence, she is singing "with herself." Karen Carpenter was extraordinarily successful and beautiful with this technique!
auto tune came about 20 years after this song was recorded- Plate reverb is the effect on her voice. I work with Leslie later in her career and that is her voice.
Lesley's songs do not have any unifying theme. It's My Party was released to radio in the Spring of 1963. You Don't Own Me was released in December 1963. Between "It's My Party" and "You Don't Own Me" there was "Judy's Turn To Cry" and "She's A Fool" both top five national hits, meaning they sold a lot of records. Immediately after "You Don't Own Me" her records company released "That's The Way Boys Are" in which Lesley's character has given up on changing her boyfriend's behavior. Right after that, Lesley had in release "I Don't Want to Be A Loser" in which she laments that having a broken heart is akin to being a loser in love. Lesley continued to release hits for several years but as she matured and starting to turning out more mature message songs, her audience sort of disappeared and so did she.
Definitely not Autotuned which was first developed in 1997 and this song debuted in 1963. That's all Leslie, but it sounds like they layered her voice to get that effect.
Thanks, Britt - NO "autotune".. they always had some echo effects... Leslie had an awesome voice... this was an early "feminist" song.... thanks for listening.. (P.S. story is that Leslie was a lesbian.. but forced to hide that aspect of her truth...)
the effect on her voice sounds to me like she overdubbed her singing part and they mixed both into the track to give it that full sound and what amounts to a heavy reverb with a little delay in the mix.
Not auto tuned. Additional female singers singing with her. So will layer their voice tracks one on top of the other. The Carpenters did it by going back into the studio and singing several background harmonies rather than hiring singers
As I'm sure many have said here she got the effect on her voice in one of two ways. She would either lay down a single Vocal Track and then go back on a second track and sing to her voice and the exact same notes and inflection. They also had a machine that would take the signal, recorded onto tape, and play it back in Ms and that was a justable so you can make it sound like a slap delay Echo of long duration or very fast making it sound like a very full vocal. John Lennon used to do a lot of double tracking them his voice with the Beatles. And Leslie was gay so she was not afraid to tackle the strong woman persona in those early days. I'm sure it only empowered her. I loved Lesley Gore.
There was no computers for auto-tune. They has big echo rooms and chambers. Also spring reverb and tremolo. You can look up the recording effects of the 50s 60s and 70s.
I doubt there was autotune back then, they may have had ADT automatic duel tracking, she was 17 when she sang it's my party, my favourite song of Hers was Immortality.
Lol... I woke up with this song in my head and thought to myself, "Hey I wonder if Brittreasts has a reaction to that song". Well dambed if she didn't.
Auto Tune didn't appear until 1997. There were techniques used in 1980s 'synth-pop' that altered or distorted someone's voice but, generally speaking, 80s music and everything prior was authentic and unadulterated. What you sometimes hear is a studio recording dubbed over a live performance or clip but not sure in this specific case.

Judy's Turn To Cry is the name of the sequel to It's My Party
It was a anthem for the women's movement in the late sixties.
Patti Page did multi tracking in the 1950's
Back then they ran several tracks on top of each other. To add that multiple voices
It was all her-no alterations!
auto tune came about 20 years after this song was recorded- Plate reverb is the effect on her voice. I work with Leslie later in her career and that is her voice.
It's Funny you said "You don't put Baby in the Corner"... This Song made a Resurgence in "Dirty Dancing", covered by The Blow Monkey's.
I believe it was called vocal "layering" or "stacking," Had been done as early as the 1950s.
I also love Dusty Springfield version
It's my Party was released in 1963. The same year as this video.
I was born in 98 and to me this was the awakening song of female independence. My mum used to play this song a lot after she left her ex husband 🤣👑
She was 16 when she sang this.
This wasn't a music video; those didn't exist yet. This performance would've been part of some TV music show.
My cousin, on my father's side. Should have talked to her more.
Another great reaction.
Yes it was doubled & reverb heavily
Definitely not Autotuned which was first developed in 1997 and this song debuted in 1963. That's all Leslie, but it sounds like they layered her voice to get that effect.
Thanks, Britt - NO "autotune".. they always had some echo effects... Leslie had an awesome voice... this was an early "feminist" song.... thanks for listening.. (P.S. story is that Leslie was a lesbian.. but forced to hide that aspect of her truth...)
During the '60s the country was going through great social change.
This song was written by two male songwriters!
#BrittReacts This is her natural voice it's not synthesized and there is no autotune because autotune was not created until 1994
A song for all Iranian and Afghan men !
the effect on her voice sounds to me like she overdubbed her singing part and they mixed both into the track to give it that full sound and what amounts to a heavy reverb with a little delay in the mix.
Not auto tuned. Additional female singers singing with her. So will layer their voice tracks one on top of the other. The Carpenters did it by going back into the studio and singing several background harmonies rather than hiring singers
Try these...“Dedicated To The One I Love” - The Mamas and Papas, or "Treat Her Right" by Roy Head and The Traits...
Dusty Springfield did a brilliant version of this tune.
Check her live performance of that song at the TAMI :)
Quincy Jones produced her music so... She was ahead of her time!
I thought it would be neat if she and Dusty Springfield got together!
They used reverb on her vocals. I used to be an audio engineer at a recording in Brooklyn, New York
Hmm, yeah, certainly lots of reverb, and it sounds like it doesn't kick in right away. Almost like a doubling echo in there.
@@erickent3557 added a little delay also…
There was no computers for auto-tune. They has big echo rooms and chambers. Also spring reverb and tremolo. You can look up the recording effects of the 50s 60s and 70s.
This is about 30+ yrs prior to Auto-Tune (1996).
I doubt there was autotune back then, they may have had ADT automatic duel tracking, she was 17 when she sang it's my party, my favourite song of Hers was Immortality.
I don't believe autotune was available yet. But they did have an echo or even a gravelly sound with a little button on the floor near the mic stand.
Lol... I woke up with this song in my head and thought to myself, "Hey I wonder if Brittreasts has a reaction to that song". Well dambed if she didn't.
P.S. Not a feminist. music is music man.
After her singing career Lesley became a doctor.
No she remained in the music business writing songs and performing. Her last album was released in 2005
@@colleenbeilby824 sorry I was thinking of Someone else.👍
