- "You Don't Own Me" is a popular song written by Philadelphia songwriters John Madara and David White and recorded by Lesley Gore in 1963, when Gore was 17 years old. The song was Gore's second most successful recording and her last top-ten single. On November 27, 2016, along with 24 other songs, the Grammy Hall of Fame announced its induction.
The song expresses emancipation, as the singer tells a lover that he does not own her, that he isn't to tell her what to do or what to say, and that he is not to put her on display. The song's lyrics became an inspiration for younger women and are sometimes cited as a factor in the second wave feminist movement.
Gore said, "My take on the song was: I'm 17, what a wonderful thing, to stand up on a stage and shake your finger at people and sing you don't own me." In Gore's obituary, The New York Times referred to "You Don't Own Me" as "indelibly defiant".

I could never explain how much courage it took for a woman to sing a song like that back in the early 60s. Women were still being defined by their husband. They were always introduced as Mr. and Mrs. ...the husband's first and last name. I can't even describe how far women have come. It started in the late 60s before women got their voice but it took a long time to get where we are.
In the early 70's my mother could not get a credit card or checking account without my dad's signature. Not that long ago my friends, please respect the women who paved the way!
As a fifteen year old girl, this was my fighting song from then on. Imagine having to take a pregnancy test before being hired. Learning how to put men of all ages egos down with words. Older brother taught me self defense as a teen. Never had to resort to it in work place. Did use words to put many back into place at work. Thankful for growing up with five much older
brothers taught me how to fight verbally with sarcasm.
@@valdadavis8293 You go girl!
Not only was it a cutting edge statement song (written by two men, John Madaea and David White),it was also a huge hit, reaching No. 2 in 1964 in the US.
Lesley has always said this is a "humanistic" song. It could apply to women as well as men. No one has the right to tell anyone what to do, what to say, how to live their life. A revolutionary song for the time that it was released. That was a time where girls, women, were supposed to be seen, not heard.
“Hey…I’m a person” was a novel concept for a woman to sing about in the pop music industry at the time.
Lesley Gore sang her ass off and from the heart. This is her anthem for all time but she had a bunch of hits, mostly teenage girl jams, love and jealousy and all that ("Maybe I Know" and "Look of Love", the standouts), but she also had some sophisticated songs like "California Nights" and bops like "Sunshine, Lollipops & Rainbows." Quincy Jones hit the jackpot when he pulled her out of the deck.
My dad kicked my mom and his three kids out of USMC officers quarters, because he (a hot shot Marine pilot) decided he didn’t want a family any more. We drove from Cherry Point, NC, to Durham, NC. It was 1967. My 32-year-old mom tried to get a lease on an apartment. She was denied, BECAUSE SHE WAS A WOMAN. It was LEGAL. They told her, well, maybe if you have a checking account. She went to the bank to open a checking account. She was denied AGAIN, because she was a woman. And THAT was also legal. Humiliated and furious, my mom was forced to call my 67-year-old GRANDFATHER to ask him to co-sign a lease and a bank account. Did i mention? She was an adult, a THIRTY-TWO YEAR OLD ADULT. Grandpa had to drive from his home in New Jersey, to Durham to co-sign for her. Until that time, she was a registered Republican (mainly because her parents were). She was so angry, that shortly after we moved into our apartment, she drove to the county GOP headquarters, marched in, and handed the receptionist an envelope full of ashes. When she was asked what the ashes were, Mom sweetly told the folks at the GOP headquarters that those ashes were what was left of her Republican Party ID card. She looked those duckers in the eye, and said, “Here you go. You’ve lost me FOREVER. From this day onward, EL is a DEMOCRAT. And for your information, EL is ME.” She held her head up high, marched back out of that building. She went to the county Democratic headquarters, registered immediately, and asked them how she could help Democrats. She remained politically active for the rest of her life. She ultimately ended up the Chair of the county Democratic Committee in the small town in New York she moved to later. She always told us, “I don’t care who you vote for. But if you don’t vote, you can’t complain. Period.” My mom was my hero. To see the true struggles women had, watching the movie “On Account Of Sex.” It was the story of how the late, GREAT Ruth Bader Ginsburg tackled the subject of gender discrimination when she wrote the brief for “Reed vs Reed” (1971). This was the decision that said the “Equal Protection Clause” of the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution guaranteed equal rights, REGARDLESS OF GENDER. It was a ground-breaking MOMENTOUS victory. Thank you, Mom. I miss you every day. Thank you for teaching us that women’s rights ARE human rights! RIP EL 1935-2012
Thank you for sharing that story.
Nice reaction -one of the most famous female "anthem songs". In contrast, most of her other music was traditional boy-girl love or relationship struggle songs. Try "She's a fool". And yes, we teenage boys all liked her electric aqua eyes and gorgeous smile.
Leslie Gore was discovered and produced by the Legendary Quincy Jones
One of the greatest voices in the magical times of rock and roll
I used to play this for my daughter, and we’d sing along. She grew up knowing her power!
I'm 26 and wish the majority of Women in my Generation would take the time and realize without Dusty Springfield, Lesley Gore, Janis Joplin.. Women would not have a Empowering Voice in Music 🤘 So I'm glad to say I'm a fan of Lesley Gore and she is one of my Idols who I feel like woulda a Great Role Model as well as a Friend to hang out with, jam with, and ask for guidance if I needed 🙂
Rest In Paradise Lesley and Your Music lives on forever 🕊
Don't forget Mama Cass and Joni Mitchell :))
It’s gonna blow your mind when you find out two men wrote that song
She was a beautiful lady with a great voice.
She sang "Its my party" then reprised it with "Its Judy's turn to Cry" you should them one after the other. I think you'll enjoy them. They sang this at the end of the movie First Wives Club.
The oldies r so darn good.
Thanks for reacting to this Anthem from the1960’s! I was a teen when this came out & my girlfriends & I sang this at the top of our lungs whenever we heard it on the radio or played our 45’s! Lesley Gore was a big star 🥰🇨🇦☮️🎵
You did a great job. Here is this sing from the early 60s, and us women are still saying it! Take care and stay independent. You are fabulous!
Great singer, terrific voice great song all good for me. Very successful singer many very good songs. May she rest in peace! Gone too soon
Ah wow I haven't heard this since I was a teenager over 30 years ago. Incredible song! Really ahead of its time lyrically and I love the don't put me on display line. Just perfect.
Lesley had 2 huge hits It's my Party and Its Judy's turn to Cry also a few more. I'd dig if you would react to them. She was a great singer. Very popular in the early 60s. Got started young. Thxs for keeping great music as this alive!
Great reaction to a truly great singer. Leslie was a remarkable artist.
Her song "California Nights" is also great.
My Jammmmm! Ty ty .loved 💓your reaction. Thx for sharing.
I only discovered this song bz of the First Wives Club 1996 movie
So happy you enjoyed Leslie Gore. In movie dirty dancing this song was covered by someone else. Also its featured in movie first wives club. I'm 64 yes old. She's top on my list. Should play Maybe I don't... many others. Check out Dusty Springfield Petulah Clark and Lu Lu who sang in the movie To Sir With Love starring Sydney Portolier...song is called to sir with love.
keep rocking girl and thanks Julie
Excellent song, young women today need to hear it too!! It was an anthem for women then next anthem I am Woman, Helen Reddy picked up the torch and ran with it! You need to check it out! I don't think young women today realize what women experienced. If they did the research maybe they wouldn't put so much importance on social media and what others think or comment about them. Women used to lift each other up not compete
YOUNG LADY : 1ST OFF, YOU NEED TO KNOW, THIS SONG WAS COMPOSED BY 2 MEN --------YES, MEN , AT MERCURY RECORDS, THE THEN 16 Y/O LESLEY'S RECORD LABEL. The late great very beautiful Lesley GORE is a great singer MAY SHE R I P xxxxx pops
You have a lovely speaking voice. I enjoyed your reaction. Nice thoughts.
Leslie was 16 when she did this song! It's my party and Judy's turn to cry are a couple great songs by Leslie as well!
I love your reaction to Lesley Gore singing You Don't Own Me! I hope you will react to her singing We Just Can't Walk Through Life at the WTC
This song came out when I was 13, and I have loved it ever since. It is hard to believe it's been this long.
Leslie Gore was a pioneer!
This song is both a Womens & Gay man's anthem, because we do experience this same shit.
It's My Party was a big hit.
Leslie rules! Chicks ROCK!
Well I enjoyed it. Might as well do some of The Ronettes or The Supreme's too. And don't forget Connie Francis.
Lesley gore broke boundaries....than came Madonna..Madonna broke so so many bounderies
She had many great songs. Hope you listen to her other songs. We all can relate To them
Even if you have a ring on your finger nobody owns you. A marriage is a partnership, not a business deal or worse a master slave contract.
She does a great rendition of I cold have danced all night combined with Natural women on the Ed Sullivan show!
Also a new suscriber.
SHE DID A GOOD ONE CALLED , ITS MY PARTY
Girl power
Still waiting on Ode to Billy Joe, by Bobby Gentry
Yes, definitely. I highly suggest her 1968 live performance on BBC. It was such a great performance. She is a master story teller!!!!
The queen of women's rights. ♥️🙏 My dad had such a crush on her that caused many arguments between my parents. You should watch some of her movies. I just watched one last week that featured "The Beach Boys". It's called, "The girls on the beach". She sang this in it. PS: "I like you too". You're beautiful. ♥️🙏
This, imo, was her strongest song
Lesley Gore was so ahead of her time she was 17 at the time this came out in 1963 a few months after her first hit It's my party. Here she's standing up to a man trying to make her his property as it was at that time. Of course Lesley never had a husband she was a lesbian though she did find the love of her life Lois Sasson in 1982 and stayed with her for 33 years until Lesley's death from lung cancer in 2015 at the age of 68. They were planing there wedding for summer 2015 sadly Lesley got sick and passed on February 16 2015. Lois passed in 2020.
Leslie Gore was a trailblazer, but if you want to hear a women's anthem listen to Helen Redding's "I am woman".
just what June Osborne said to Fred Waterford before saying Run.....
Please check this video of her singing that song live. She was blowing people away with the passion that she put into that song. She has a very strong voice.
People were cheering her on like she was a female version of Elvis Presley.
She was only 18 here.
She actually sang six songs in Teen Age Music International (TAMI) concert.
I believe you'll enjoy her performances!
In order, she sang:
"Maybe I Know"
"You Don't Own Me"
"You Didn't Look Around"
"Hey Now"
"It's My Party"
"Judy's Turn to Cry"

It's My Party & Judy's Turn To Cry are 2 other good ones by Lesley Gore
A women's anthem written by two men.
The original way the song was written was for a man to be promising these things to a woman, quite outlandish for a man to say sure - but it was even more outrageous for Gore to flip it and make a woman say it to a guy.
👍😎 ❤
She was only 17 when she recorded this. Funnily, 2 men wrote this song.
Leslie first recorded this in 1963 when she was 17. I turned 14 that year and had no clue of what she really was singing about, but I was enamored with her in those days. Of course the video here was done later on, but personally I think she looked nicer and presented the song better. - BG
She looks like Adele in that last pic
You do understand how time works, right? But good observation.
Lesley has another song that’s not as popular but is
cool just the same called “Maybe I know that he’s been cheating”.
Awesome, I was hoping the same thing.
Give Norma Tanega a try as well. "Your''re dead" and " Walking my Cat named Dog."
A ring does not change the meaning. Women are not owned.
This is the same girl her wanted to cry at her party because Johnny left her for Judy and then later wanted to rub it in Judy's face that Johnny came back to her and I was like, Girl! Why would you take his sorry butt back? LOL...You'd have to hear two other songs of hers to understand what I just said though :) "It's My Party" and "Judy's Turn To Cry" being the other two songs.
What an incredibly strong song and she puts all her passion behind the words. Hate to disagree with you but a ring on a woman’s finger does not represent ownership, it is supposed to represent undying love.
Even if she was married, she shouldn't be told what to do or say. Guessing she was about 20 during this recording.
Leslie Gore was 16 here...
Wow really
No, it's not about a ring on her finger, that's totally not the message of this song.
When my Grandmother got married in the late 1800’s her money, land and all assets were automatically her husbands and she had a lot. Luckily my Grandfather was a lovely man who adored my Grandmother and treated her with respect.
It has a different meaning today. She was quietly bu unapologetically lesbian and it's popular with the LGBT crowd.
her mum was famous too she invented the bikini.
You should watch this version, so powerful and she was only 17 ua-cam.com/video/JDUjeR01wnU/v-deo.html
I always loved Sunshine Lollipops
Gay guys say the same thing
Nothing but respect to All People
