This song came out in the 1963. Consider this, women couldn't apply for her own credit card or loan until the 70's. Women could get fired for being pregnant, and couldn't serve on a jury. This was a bold song for the time.
More younger women need to hear and see these messages, so as not to take for granted the very "hard fought for" rights...

I graduated high school in 1952. Where I lived, I couldn't serve on a jury until 1957. If you say who wants jury duty. Imagine somebody raped you and the jury would consist of all white men. How at ease would you be having to give the details in a room full of men with no women there. In my case, as a married woman, I couldn't get my own credit until 1983. I remember as soon as I was able to get credit started I went right to the bank and started it. Also, it was around this time that I could get a credit card in my name. Harris' Department store was the first place to offer me credit without my husband having to OK it. I had girlfriends whose husbands left them with no money or any way to take care of their children and they couldn't even get a credit card to help them get food for their children. This doesn't even begin to address employment opportunities for women at this time.

This song's message was SO FAR ahead of its time. Nice that this is a truly live recording! Lesley was called "The First Lady of rock and roll" for her pioneering work in what was considered a man's world.
Not only ahead of its time but Lesley was only 17 when she did this.
The studio version kicked major ass, but Leslie's delivery here puts it to shame.

This song is relevent to me of todays times. Not only the romantic partner aspect but we could sing this to our ever increasing authoritarian govts all over the world. Do what we tell you and stop thinking for yourselves. Definately dont speak your mind when nothing makes sence.

"It's My Party" was her first big it --- and her very first song! She came out of nowhere and just hit it big immediately. I think she was only 16 with her first song.

This was a time early 60s when its so difficult from woman today.
Woman could not have their own bank accounts, man had the control in all walks of their wife's life. This is one of the first powerful songs that started girl power back in the day, long before the Spice girls were born.

Women have been going to college, university, becoming professionally employed and remaining SINGLE and financially independent for over 100 years. There were powerful women and they owned companies, and definitely had full control over their finances. Men had control in all walks of their wife's life? That's bullshit and only true if a woman lived/lives in a middle eastern country. My late mother went to college in the 1940s and became an Accountant - her money, was HER money. Her bank account, her rights, her control.

Do you think that countries like the US and the UK are more enlightened? Well, an American woman needed her husband's permission to open a bank account as recently as the 1960s, and it wasn't until 1975 and the Sex Discrimination Act that a British woman could open a bank account in her own name. And as for getting a mortgage on her own … forget it.
In the 1960s, women gained the right to open a bank account, however, when RGB argued that first case in 1971, many banks still would not issue women credit cards or allow them to open checking accounts without their husband's permission.
Not only that, women couldn't obtain a mortgage or get a business loan without a male co-signer.
She was 16 years old when she first recorded this song along with "It's My Party(her first)" and "Judy's Turn to Cry" in 1963
Brings back so many memories of listening to 45s on a High Fi record player as a little kid at my teenage babysitter's house.
I was 11 when this song came out. Had it on a 45.
"It's My Party" is probably her most classic song and representative of the early 60's pre-Beatles music. "Calfornia Nights" is another memorable one from 1967, while "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" is a short, fun song that the kids would probably love.
Also, "Judy's Turn To Cry," which is the aftermath of "It's My Party.
I loved her follow up song to "It's My Party" -"Judy's Turn to Cry " where Leslie got her revenge on Judy.

Lesley Gore was a teen pop princess whose first hit was called "It's My Party" (and I'll cry if I want to), about a girl whose boyfriend ditches her at her own birthday party. At 17, she wanted to have a more assertive song. Quincy Jones produced it, and it became an anthem for girls in the mid-60s. 25 years later Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton sing it to great effect at the end of the film The First Wives Club.
Leslie Gore was so ahead of her time, she is LEGEND, so glad young people are rediscovering her. Those of us who came of age with her were blessed to have this level of music and artist.
Lesley Gore was discovered by Quincy Jones at the age of 17 in 1963. He produced her first hit "It's My Party".
Was just scrolling through to see if anyone mentioned QJ. This young lady was one of the earliest treasures he discovered
thats so cool. I loved her and remember those songs when I was a kid. I loved her. She had a fantastic voice and this song was waaay ahead of it stime. Leslie was a lesbian and had to keep her sexuality secret in those days.
While we are doing 1960’s, I wanted to point out today legendary actor Sydney Poitier died at the age of 94 he was the first black actor to win the Oscar for best lead actor in Lillies of the Field, Later on he played a reform school teacher in To Sir with Love. One of the students was played by popular British singer Lulu who sang the Theme song. She was a child star and teen idol. She was also Maurice Gibb’s first wife.
They should definitely check out Lulu. Loved To Sir with Love, but also her dance music in the ‘90s.

@@pattiguyre8968 Quick correction. His name is Sidney Portier but he has a daughter who also acts named Sydney Portier.
If I am not mistaken, he starred in three movies in 1967 (per a recent news report I watched): "In The Heat Of The Night"; "To Sir With Love" and "Lillies Of The Field", for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor. I remember the year for "To Sir..." because it happened to be the year I graduated.
This particular performance was a rare event for television at that time because it was live vocals and musicians. She was all of just turned seventeen when this aired. The Lady had some serious pipes❣ RIP Leslie Gore. 😔

Lesi Gore was at the cusp of the women's movement. We were just learning that we had power and how to use it. At that moment in time we were going to college after high school not walking down the aisle to get married. We were protesting and demanding our rights. We were demanding equality at every level. You Don't Own Me became a theme song for us as we stepped out into the world. Another song of the women's movement was "I Am Woman" by Helen Reddy and definitely worth a listen on Female Friday or just any ol' day of the week! And, never forget the start of things was Loretta Lynn's "The Pill."
There's a lot of unmarried women and men out there now though so maybe some of this message may have backfired a little bit. I'd be very interested to compare relative self-reported happiness levels of women then vs women now.

As a Male Boomer myself, I began to suspect 10 or 20 years that the Women's Movement(which I once peripherally supported), combined with the Free Love Movement(which I once advocated) and the resulting wholesale rejection of marriage as an institution, were accomplices in the slow destruction of western societies, and the ruin of individual lives as well.

Right now the wokest people are trying to cancel & destroy a mega-successful woman b/c she had the Nerve to say that a female is a female, and a male is a male. (How Dare she say something so "Hateful?!") It's only cause she's worth $1BN+ that they haven't totally cancelled her as yet. But They and the media, keep trying. Dark times ahead. Beware the false saviors who praise you and promise you the world.
Helen Reddy's "You and Me Against the World", about a single mother singing to her young child, was the story of many, many, many of us.

She came out of the closet in her later years, and was always her own person. She was great. A fun video (Not for reaction, just for fun) is her on the 60's Batman TV show singing a love song to a portrait of "Robin". She was "Pussycat", the young sidekick to that weeks villain "Catwoman".

There was a movie called Grace of My Heart. It was loosely based on Carole King's life as a songwriter. There is a scene where the main character was asked to write a song for the young and wholesome girl next door. In the scene it became obvious that she was a lesbian and the songwriter caught onto it and wrote a song that she could sing to her girlfriend. It was based on Leslie Gore. Great movie and some great music.

Airing twice a week during seasons one & two (unheard of for television shows!) and spawning the phenomenon of Batmania. Even though I have the box set of the series, I will still pause to watch an episode if I come across it while rolling through the cable channels.

I had the privilege of playing bass for Ms. Gore one year before she passed. She was a total pro and perfectionist-we had to rehearse all day for a one shot gig in Sag Harbor,New York. She was great/
I remember hearing this song for the first time when I was around 10 yrs old (in the 80s) and thinking "Hey, this old people music is pretty kick a**". Hahaha. Such a strong statement for girls during a time when that wasn't really a thing in music.

Dude, this song is amazing, the music expresses a threatened emancipation, when the singer tells a lover that they don't have her, that they shouldn't tell her what to do or what to say, and that they shouldn't show her off. The song's lyrics have become an inspiration to younger women and are sometimes cited as a factor in the second wave of the feminist movement. Gore said, "My take on the song was: I'm 17, what a wonderful thing to stand up on stage and shake my finger at people and sing you don't own me"
This was at a time coming out of the 1950's & early 60's when most women did not work outside the home, men ruled the roost & were kings of their castle. And men & womens roles in the family were clearly defined. Men brought home the paycheck did the yard & car work. Women took care of the kids, the house & meals. When I was a kid all through the 60's I never knew any family that the parents were not together or where spouses shared duties. Women didn't have much say in anything. Divorce was not a thing. Many women stayed in marriages because they had no options unlike today. So this was a pretty powerful song for that time.One of my favorite songs from the early 60's. So many great covers of this song.
This song is a frickin powerhouse. It's always been on my break up playlist since my teens. Lesley Gore was SO far ahead of her time. What an absolute icon!
Lesley Gore was amazing. Her early stuff was produced by Quincy Jones. Her entire set from The TAMI Show (the concert film that this is from) knocks it out of the park.

Lesley Gore fact… Quincy Jones was her original music creator. I watch the Netflix documentary on Quincy Jones, When he first started out he took her under his wing. And he talks about it in the documentary. He actually did that with a lot of young performers back in the day.

Gore was 17 at this point and she had two enormous hits, "It's My Part" and "Judy's Turn to Cry," Both were very timid and dealt with girl n girl revenge. Consequently, her fan base was teenage girls, who must have been emboldened by this anthem!
"Stepping back" and watching these old videos/performances is like stepping into a time machine for a moment.
This song came out at the perfect time. I was 14 and it was an anthem for us teen age girls.

In the pantheon of classic important "Girl Power" songs, this one is massive. There are a handful of different live versions floating around, and they're not performed quite like the original studio version, but thankfully you picked a good version here.
There are two studio versions of You Don't Own Me: 1) the single version (single vocal, outside the echo booth; 2) the album version, double-tracked vocal; inside the echo booth.
The mention of Leslie Gore automatically makes me think of 'It's my Party', which was her big hit!
All of these comments, yes! I want to mention, too, that back in those days there were many guys who felt like if you were dating them, they could tell you how to wear your hair, your clothes, who you could talk to, etc. There are many types of freedom that girls fought for during those days!
This was almost revolutionary in terms of its message. Similar to Carol King's song Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, which put the spotlight on one night stands from the point of view of the woman.
Gerry Goffin wrote Will You Love Me Tomorrow after listening to the Shirelles' Tonight's The Night.

Recently, Ann Wilson of Heart recorded her own cover of this song backed by guitarist Warren Haynes. It is an awesome hard-rockin' version that is outstanding!
I just finished watching a Netflix mystery series called Stay Close, and a version of this song was the theme song. It's so great. This song is from 1963, the same year she hit #1 with "It's My Party". If you want to go down this rabbit hole, you can also do "Judy's Turn to Cry", "She's a Fool", and maybe the happiest song of all time, "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows". She's an icon. She was also one of the first openly gay women to hit it big as a recording artist.
I'm 67 and remember her music well, yet I never knew she's gay! Go Leslie.

Now that you've discovered Leslie Gore, it's time to bring Helen Reddy to the party. Her song I AM WOMAN will make Amber fist pump in the air. Her early gig on the Midnight Special will do. Enjoy.
One more thing. The biggest female group of the 196o's is long overdue for an appearance. Ladies and Gentlemen, Diana Ross and the Supremes medly from the T.A.M.I. should be allowed to be seen as the premiere hit making machine from Motown records.
I just listened to Helen after listening to their reaction to Lulu. But I figured, before I suggested I Am Woman, that I check to see if anybody else had the same thought. IAW was the unofficial anthem of the women's movement.
"I Am Woman" is iconic, but "Delta Dawn" is a great song as well.
Lesley was an extremely talented and popular young performer. She had 3 big hits including this one before she turned 18. Lesley sadly passed in 2015 at 68 years old. Lesley had realized at 20 yrs old that she was gay and never made it an issue, but also didn't hide from it. She was a huge supporter of gay rights in her later years. She was in a relationship for around 30 yrs. (I think that's about right) and sadly was planning on being married to her longtime GF but died of lung cancer before their wedding day came. A number of songs worth a listen.
The late Academy Award-nominated, Tenafly, NJ's Lesley Gore (the film Fame -- her song "Out Here On My Own") went out on top -- she recorded her final solo lp with Blake Morgan -- "Ever Since."
From that LP (2005) came Blake's "Better Angels," which Lesley performed so wonderfully it was used during the TV series CSI: Miami & MTV's The Real World: Brooklyn. "It's Gone," appeared later in a film. The team of Morgan & Gore produced a great LP.
Filled with a few songs Lesley wrote herself the LP was rated 4.5 stars by AllMusic & favorable reviews throughout the music media. She was always great -- & she predated the toughness of Grace Slick, Janis Joplin & Patti Smith. Lesley was the epitome of a beautiful strong-willed woman, & was produced admirably by Quincy Jones.
As a kid I loved her -- I still do. Her initial hits by the way were all recorded before she was 18 years old.
If you do the Lesley Gore song "It's My Party," you should do a back-to-back listen and do "Judy's Turn to Cry;" because that song is a sequel to the first song and continues the story.
Glad you got around to this song. I was born in 1955 and can say definitely that Lesley Gore was before her time. Women of the 50s and into the early 60s simply were not this bold, not publicly anyway. The 50s was an era of restriction for women and the 60s brought women's liberation, but in middle America, women were slow to change and generally stuck to a very repressive code of behavior, often ostracizing women who stepped out of that mold.
Brings back great memories. Love this song. Revolutionary for the times. I was young and impressionable--and that left a great message for a young lad like me. I had a crush on her, of course. I was 10 or 11 at the time...

By the way, set aside her big initial hits, one of the most exciting cuts by that crystal blue-eyed lady was a song called "That's The Way Boys Are," (1964) which is simply dynamic & memorable. Ear-candy for sure.

Trivia: Lesley Gore was in two episodes of "Batman" in the 1960's. She played Catwoman's sidekick, Pussycat. The two-parter was called "Scat, Darn Catwoman" and "That Darn Catwoman".
She sang "Maybe Now" and "California Nights" on the show.

Love this song. Such a powerful message. Sadly it is still a normal mindset even today. Women are still placed in an owned position in society. The man in a relationship is still normal deemed the lead in the couple. Things like the man should always pay on date and the man is always head of household even if the woman is the breadwinner needs to stop! I hate the fact that it’s still deemed weak by society if the woman pays. If I ask someone out and pick an expensive restaurant you damn well I’m gonna pay and if that someone did the same then yes I would expect them to pay. But what I’m trying to say is no man or woman owns me they don’t need to take care of me.
Yes! At heart, this is a song about equality. I loved this song, both this by Leslie Gore and the cover by Dusty Springfield. Put it on your playlist and sing it loud. My daughter and I sang this song together, and I hope both her grandmother and I lived this message to my kids. Your point about getting the message to boys is important, too. My kids are older than you two are now, but they each have strong, loving, respectful marriages. You both are modeling this to your three children every day.

This is like the first female liberation anthem! It took alot of guts to write and sing this back in the day. She was a tiny little lady with a huge voice and gumption.. This is how we need to raise the future little girls! Equality in all forms!!

Amber this song was covered by The Blow Monkies and their cover was used in the movie Dirty Dancing and is also on the film,s soundtrack which was two albums long and it,s on the first one along with Patrick Swayze,s vocals on She,s Like The Wind which was also released as a 12inch single in the UK

One of the most ironic songs ever....back when she was recording this and performing it live - a big group of men were deciding every little thing. Her hairstyle, her wardrobe, her diet, who she was allowed to consort with, etc. This does not diminish the message nor the power of the performance, but considering the time it was made, one has to put it in proper context.
I love Leslie Gore. She was not only a singer but an actress. "It's My Party I'll Cry If I Want To" and its sequel "Judy's Turn to Cry" are story songs. "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" is just a fun song. This song was early sixties you can tell by her hairstyle.
Lesley Gore is still one of my all time favorites. My 13 yr old granddaughter asked for Lesley Gore vinyl for her bday.
Lesley Gore, yet another artist/newbie produced by Quincy Jones. Quincy was also band leader and producer for Frank Sinatra during this era and their collaboration "Fly Me To The Moon" was played by NASA when Neil Armstrong first stepped on the moon. He also produced Lesley's first hit "Its My Party." Not bad. You would cry too if it happened to you! 🎶 Stay Frosty.
"Maybe I Know" is another good Lesley Gore tune.

This song is one of the earliest I've heard that's about RESPECT. She is just asking for the same considerations that he has, and to be accorded the same respect. You two skirted around that word, but that is what it's all about.

Leslie was 17 when she recorded this song. It's My Party, Judy's Turn to Cry. Also an appearance from Ed Sullivan show Cry Me A River/Hey Jude. She was in her 20' s during that performance.

Came out in 1963 when women were just beginning to stand up for themselves! It was quite the change from her typical teenage girl fare like "It's My Party" and "Judy's Turn to Cry" I'm so glad you picked her though, she was a great singer and had many good songs, my favorites are "Maybe I Know" , "She's a Fool" and "California Nights",
I wish I could go back in time and watch Lesley Gore live. On the surface she had the hair and dressed in business attire but was just a teenager when she started. The first time I heard this song was actually on the "Dirty Dancing" soundtrack and it was recorded by the Blow Monkeys.
In addition to being a singer, Lesley Gore cowrote with her brother Michael Gore the beautiful ballad "Out Here on My Own," from the 1980 movie "Fame." It was nominated for an Oscar for best original song. Michael won the Oscar for the title track from "Fame." Both songs were sung by the beautiful and talented Irene Cara.
