We want to stop for a moment to talk, how great is Lee Pace's skill??? I discovered him recently but I realize with each interpretation how simply extraordinary he is!!!
I’ve only seen him in this and as Ronan but I just watched an interview with him. It’s so weird seeing that he’s a nice, lighthearted dude in real life. I know he’s acting but a lot of guys (RDJ) just play versions of themselves in most of their roles. Lee Pace couldn’t be any more different. Cool to see.
He’s pretty much has it. He does all kinds of huge roles. The Hobbit movies, the Marvel movies, Foundation, he was in Lincoln, he was in the Twilight movies. And he seems to prefer more interesting low profile cerebral projects anyway. The dude is a terrific actor who gets better every year. But Foundations is definitely my favorite role for him.
There a still quite many places where dictatorial regimes oppress their people in just this way. They come in different guises and appearances, but they all pursue the same goal: power over others. Orwell described this perfectly in his epic novel "1984." I remember the saying: There are three deaths: the first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.
Lee Pace was probably the saving grace of the show for me. The Foundation's first season was overall a disappointment, but all of the scenes with Lee Pace were compelling. He has such a strong screen presence that commands attention.
May I ask, what was the main cause of your disappointment? This is the first sci-fi show in a while that I've truly enjoyed and felt had some top tier writing. For me this is filled the void that was left by Star Wars. Though I have not read the Foundation novels so perhaps that is what I am missing. Still, I found Demerzel and Cleon to both be extremely compelling characters and the whole Dusk, Day and Dawn idea seems very well thought out. Jared Harris as Hari Seldon was also top notch. It is by no means perfect, but this is the most excited for a TV show I've been in a long time and I'm quite surprised by the negative reviews it's receiving.
I doubt it cuz the cinematography was out scale compared to the other sci-fi shows. The show generally makes itself watched. I never feel bored while I watched it.
@@Redheadtama1 I didn't like how the story lines were connected and most of the characters felt empty to me. And as far as connecting with me on a emotional level, it wasn't nearly as good as The Expanse & Invasion in my opinion. Which was disappointing. I'm a big fan of Jared Harris, but found him a little underwhelming in this. I thought Invasion especially was much better with using the story & characters to create suspense & tension. But this is all largely subjective of course.
The beauty of this ruthlessness is that EVERYTHING up until he told her what he'd do too her personally could've been complete bullshit, because she'll never get the opportunity to find out before she's removed from the events of the world. The despair can come entirely from his delivery of the narrative, a narrative that she'll think is real as she spends as much time as it takes for her body to wear out running it over and over again in her mind. Infinitely easier than actually carrying out any of what he said, and the only verfiably real actions can all be done with basic available tech.
@@darex0827 Fair enough, but my point is that his display is so perfect that he didn't even have to show any dead bodies to make her believe. So long as she goes into her sensory deprivation tank believing they're dead, that's all that really matters. @@LabTech41 he also failed in a way. Even if he killed everyone, he will remember her. What she did will always be there, and that will have profound impact on the Universe. Did he even blink? INSANE and INTENSE.. so INCREDIBLE...I felt so badly for brother Dawn... that girl was a cut throat...that poor baby didn't have to die like that it wasn't his fault... and Demerzel??? Geesh lady! Just when I was thinking she was more Hunan than robot... SNAP! WTF? She cried when the Priestess was assassinated but didn't even blink to end poor Dawn. I was shocked!!!
I think the end of the episode shows that she didn't want to do it. Like when she's talking to the holy woman she says that her programing would override her will and force her to kill her. The same thing happened with Dawn, her core programming took over and there was nothing she could do. I think the second season could show her trying to purge her core programming so nothing can stop her free will again.
I just can't imagine a worse hell of a punishment. Utterly chilling just to listen to this even though I know it's fictional. Whether she deserved it or not what a horrible fate. Lee Pace is just fantastic and elevated the first season far more than I think anyone else could. He hypnotizes me in every scene.
Right? I watch this clip from time to time. I’m always a bit unsettled for a while afterwards. I put myself in her position and it freaks me out for a bit. I think I’d immediately try to jump up and try to land on my head, hoping to break my neck and end it there. It’s not like I’ll need much athletic ability from then on, if I fail.
Me and my brother keep on arguing whether he actually killed everyone. I personally don’t think he did, but Azura could never prove it because she’ll be imprisoned for the rest of her life. If so, then it really shows the expansive power of Brother Day’s words and the fear he’s instilled in people to actually believe him, which is sometimes just as powerful as a massacre of everyone someone knows
This was brutal when I seen this and so satisfying. This is great writing and an amazing way of setting up a villain. Someone with power who only needs to say the word and you believe that word has power behind it. Lee pace is fantastic
Find me one parent that wouldn't at the very least consider this before you say he was ruthless. The most damage most of us could do to our child's murderer would be to kill him but that is only because we are who we are. When you have the resources of the Galactic Empire on your back well... you get creative.
@Dr. Van Nostrand True and he doesn't even have to do it, he could've just said he did it and locked her up and she would never know the truth. Pointless uncaring narcist
EM...no? First Brother Dawn wasn't killed by her, he got betrayed by her. That doesn't justify that kind of punishment. Demerzel killed Brother Dawn because Dawn was different (due to the fact that his DNA was altered and that wasn't Azuras fault; since she is supposed to be the same age as Dawn she was practically a baby back then when they messed with the Cleon's DNA) Also, if someone is different it is not a reason to kill him/her. If your child was betrayed and you come up with that kind of punishment (killing all the people who had something to do with the betrayer, putting the betrayer in a cell, chained and sensory shrouded for a lifetime which is far worse than what the betrayer did) makes you basically a psychopath. Really, I am worried by your statement "if you have the ressources..." and that others agree to it. Brother Day is a psychopath. He is pure sadistic here. He is not angry at Demerzel for killing Dawn. He is just a power hungry egocentric maniac who loves to scare people who are socially below him and to punish them to satisfy his sadistic tendencies.
I respectfully disagree. The conspirators have nothing better to offer, and the Cleons have been pretty good shepherds for the people of the empire. Even Salvor's daddy admitted that he had had it good in the empire. His parents were of the upper working class, no nobles or anything, and they enjoyed damn good lives. That he chose to follow a religious zealot into an exile, well, that's not exactly the emperors' fault. He just said that the good stuff he had gladly enjoyed had been built on lies - but what lies he meant, that got never specified. Until Hari came along with his predictions of doom, the empire was a stable realm, predictable, orderly, and not prone to cruelties towards its population. That is not a small deal, and it speaks well of the ruling dynasty. Alas, it seems that a few malcontents were hell bent not to respect and enjoy the peace.
I find it both ironic and a bit sad that the Cleon storylines (both Day and Dawn) are by far the most interesting storylines in this series (to me, at least), but they're also the ones that are almost entirely original to the TV show. Both Gaal and Salvor's actresses are quite good, but their storylines often seem to drag a bit to me.
Easy to think of when you’re watching a tv show. Probably a lot harder to come up with snarky come-backs when a man tells you he’s just killed everyone you’ve ever known.
@@MorallyDubiousFrog Not just everyone you've met or known, but everyone connected to them, their families and friends. I don’t think even she’s thinking anything about defiance after the devastating sentence brother day just gave her. The reality of what has happened and what she faces is just sinking in. Brother Day chose his revenge so that there would be no defiance. It would have cheapened the scene for her to her have flippant remark.
This is so different from Cleon of the books. From reading the books I got the impression that Cleon was a good person born in the wrong time. Nevertheless this scene was awesome and Lee Pace is such a good actor!
The most frightening thing is his quiet contained and eloquent anger. This is not a man impotent with rage. This is a man who uses his anger to destroy a world with a small discreet gesture. Beautifully done.
Lee pace is a legend... only saving grace of foundation t.v. series.and the only thing that kept it interesting..... I'd rather watch an entire show on cleon's that's how good Lee pace is...
exactly how I felt. the series, sadly, are a mess, but Cleon storyline is quite good and Lee Pace makes it legendary. I soon became annoyed when the story would cut to other plots, relieved and enthralled when it returned to Empire.
Exactly. Terence Mann and Jared Harris also helped carry the show. Other than that, the only other strength were the visual effects. The actresses who played Gaal and Salvor were boring as hell.
Cleon is turning out to be an incredibly compelling villain. I find villains to be most compelling when their actions lie within some kind of moral grey area. For example, Cleon did brutally cull half of the population of two whole planets, but it was in response to a catastrophic terror attack. And as he points out, he has to be a leader and sometimes has to make decisions without considering the individual. If he considered every individual then he would not be able to make the difficult decisions that need to be made in order to keep the peace. The fact that he gives some justification for his heinous actions makes him a very interesting character to me. I believe that he believes he is doing the right thing.
Well this Brother Day Cleon is very different from Brother Dusk Cleon (the Cleon that culled 2 planets). The latter was arrogantly sadistic which you can notice the difference in behaviour with the former (Brother Dawn all grown up). This is actually such brilliant acting on the part of Lee pace and the guy that plays Brother Dusk, as while they look exactly the same there is differentiation in the actions/behaviour
But yeah, the Brother Dusk (Brother Day in the first episode) is incredibly cruel and has no moral justification for his actions. He enjoys his absolute power and does not hide it (think of the scenes with that arrogant smug grin, one that this Day lacks)
I cant believe 'FOUNDATION' isn't as well known as it is. I came across it by absolute chance... it's universe is so enticing. I cant stop watching it.
It is in the first season but then it becomes like everything else made in the West in the 2020s. ie it's about people of colour and lbgtplus v an evil white patriarchy.
Its funny when you watch this scene before seeing the series. You feel sorry for her. But then when you see why this is happening, you are kind of like, ok, she had that coming.
Thing is, Empire could be lying and make the punishment just as effective to the one individual but probably not. BTW, this method of collective punishment may catch a few more conspirators. Chilling.
this scene is so iconic, and how he resembles the entire power with the touch of his fingers, shows integrity and domiance around him, makes everyone fall with the gaze of his resemblance. Lee Pace is an underatted actor, but plays characters so well, espcially villains.
It remind me of a Manga where the antagonist is finally defeated and getting the worst punishment ever. This person is basically stripped for his entire senses, and kept alive forever. Eventually we saw how they do this. They are basically remove his brain and then put it in some safety glass container with life support. He is alive and still aware but cannot do anything and cannot sense anything. At the end, the main character is finally decided to forgive him and turn off the life support.
This was one of the most brutal acts of retribution I've ever seen on TV ... such violence w/o once scene. He embodied it all ... and that flick of the hand. Perfectly scripted, acted and directed.
Darkness, imprisoning me All that I see, absolute horror I cannot live, I cannot die Trapped in myself, body my holding cellllllllll Lee Pace, has taken my sight Taken my speech, taken my hearing Taken my arms, taken my legs Taken my soul, left me with life in Helllllll
I think the punishment may not be as prolonged as Day would have wished. That sort of sensory deprivation is likely to wig out Azura and turn her into a mindless vegetable. Even being in a float tank overnight can leave people a bit "weird". And there is still some sensory input happening. So the chances of Azura zoning out into zombie status and not remaining "aware" are quite high. Still pretty nasty though.
You forget, this is 10s of thousands of years in the future, they more than likely have medication that can keep her sane and rational throughout the rest of her life
@@Matthew_BKG Very possible. If so, I wonder why they don't make wider use of it in controlling the malcontents. Even so, my money is always on the human mind's ability to take itself where no one else can find it.
Having a massive (on a galactic scale) drug program to keep possible malcontents docile has the potential to backfire and make the “regular joe” citizen concerned for their personal liberty. A great authoritarian system is invisible in it’s repression, like Day in this scene.
The irony is that with the deaths of 1,551 people, even if the cause is never known, he has ensured her legacy will live on in the psyches of those who knew the victims. Her legacy is the truth that he is tyrannous and mad with no restraint. He is her legacy, the last person she has affected.
This show has some great actors. I hope that black chick that was “poisoned” didn’t actually die. Her speeches were powerful. Oh.. and this scene was one of the most evil scenes ever. So low key evil
and u thought blowing two planets to oblivion was cold? even if this is true and this caused way less deaths than wat Dusk caused when he was Day i still think this was more ruthless I hated her for how she manipulated Dawn and i was hoping for Day to kill her but this fate actually made me feel sry for her
Cleon did what a father who loves his son would do to the person who hurt his son and also triet to kill his son,and in the end his son died because of her actions
Pure spite. He thinks he has erased her and the plot from history, but he remembers and it will shape his actions going forward. Will he tell the Cleon's that follow him? Will he also erase those that researched her constellation and wielded the particle beam weapons? Great, disturbing scene. An example of the control authoritarians always wish they had.
Haunting! Doubt he was bluffing about killing all those people. He did after all completely wipe out innocent planets after a few took down the sky bridge.
Absolutely brilliant stuff. Just incredible. Unfortunately, anytime Lee Pace and Jarred Harris weren't on the screen, this show just crashed and burned.
Congatulations, you've just created 1551 martyrs. That will have made a meaningful mark on another 800 lives on average. That will escalate rather quickly.
After watching this scene I continue to wonder if he really did what he told her or if he was bluffing. Being Brother Day and thus the ruling embodiment of the Empire he certainly would be capable and not above it. On the other hand he knows there is no way for her to verify the truth and that his words are given immense weight simply due to his authority. Considering he was Brother Dawn during the destruction of Anacreon and Thespis and how he reacted, lashing out towards current Brother Dusk for choosing destruction over mercy back then, I'd like to imagine he was merciful enough to not actually kill all those people and rather only make her believe he did.
on the other hand everyone she has ever talked to will include any direct co conspirators might not get the whole network but it will damage them and make them paranoid
1:03 He killed his own peeps too 1:42 imagine if they showed her fellow groundskeepers getting killed: how terrifying would that be to the scene if they had people working in the background just suddenly fall dead and then their bodies getting retrieved as he walks away
Looking back, Day was likely deceiving her about killing her entire family (no doubt he has the power) but she'll never know that and that leaves her in despair.
I am so glad I wasn't the only person freaked out with this scene. I assume that they have the technology to basically keep Azura alive in complete sensory deprivation almost indefinitely. Truly a fate worse than death. I couldn't sleep that night because I couldn't get the thought of that out of my head. At the end of that exchange, I hope Azura did a header into the concrete slab before the guards came to take her away. It would take a lot of will power to off herself, but that was her only chance to avoid the hell that awaited her.
I had the exact same reaction. Even the thought of a quick suicide attempt. Even if she only managed to paralyze herself, it’s not like she’s going to need any athletic ability, where she’s going. It would definitely be worth a shot. I watch this clip from time to time and it leaves me unsettled for a while, every time
This scene and subplot shows how little the showrunners understood about the Foundation story. This doesn't show an empire already crumbling, as Seldon proved.

Agreed. His performance in the episode where brother Day walks the Spiral left me speechless, every scene he's in is instantly saved
Infinitely easier than actually carrying out any of what he said, and the only verfiably real actions can all be done with basic available tech.
true, but he is Empire, destroyer of worlds. I'm 99.9999% sure he did exactly what he said he did.
@@darex0827 Fair enough, but my point is that his display is so perfect that he didn't even have to show any dead bodies to make her believe. So long as she goes into her sensory deprivation tank believing they're dead, that's all that really matters. Empire certainly isn't above actually doing it, but here's the question: how do you KNOW he did it?
@@LabTech41 he also failed in a way. Even if he killed everyone, he will remember her. What she did will always be there, and that will have profound impact on the Universe. People may not remember her name, but their lives have been changed because if it. She should have also taken that opportunity to stand up and bash her head as hard as she could on the corner of that stone bench. It may have resulted in a quick death vs decades of insanity
@@LabTech41 Well, he didn’t just want to punish her. He wanted to erase her. I’m surprised he didn’t incinerate the garden plants too.
Unless you know there's an afterlife and a devine justice, he's mortal after all and will seize to exist
That simple hand gesture was honestly more terrifying than seeing any of those 1,551 individuals suddenly disintegrating.
This scene was handsdiown one of the most savage revenge anyone could imagine... and ir was done without raising his voice or even an inflection in his tone...with the swish of two fingers, he let the galaxy and the audience know he is a badass empire!
Cersei would be proud.
I hate Demerzel for a number of reasons. Killing Cleon XIV is on the top of a rather long list.
It will be a long time before I find any form of revenge as breathtakingly terrifying as this one.
I'm so happy to see Lee in this role, I really hope we'll see more of him in big shows and movies in the future
He already has a huge resume of movies!
Idk man, I'd rather a lifetime of sensory deprivation than a lifetime of grueling torture.
Reminds me of I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
Me and my brother keep on arguing whether he actually killed everyone.
I personally don’t think he did, but Azura could never prove it because she’ll be imprisoned for the rest of her life.
If so, then it really shows the expansive power of Brother Day’s words and the fear he’s instilled in people to actually believe him, which is sometimes just as powerful as a massacre of everyone someone knows
Why would he not kill them and risk another Azura?
@@jouaienttoihe didn't kill bel rioses husband even though he told him he did
This was brutal when I seen this and so satisfying. This is great writing and an amazing way of setting up a villain. Someone with power who only needs to say the word and you believe that word has power behind it. Lee pace is fantastic
As I watched this I was like, "GATDAMB!" Also, Lee Pace's acting is amazing.
Unbelievably scary punishment, I've never ever thought about it existed! Played by my new hero, Lee Page!
Pointless uncaring narcist
both my parents, me, my wife... there is plenty
And with this little speech, Brother Day proves the conspirators to be correct. No human should ever hold this much power.
I kept losing interest in Gaal and Salvor.
Nope it was amazing.
@@robwalsh9843I didn't.
I just fast forwarded over everything to do with Terminus people, the monks esp were annoying but the Hober Mallow character was the most grating.
She could have said:"But you remember. I left a mark on you and your Empire."
One last act of defiance
quite, quite right.
And not just relatives, but everyone essentially related to you directly or indirectly. Any and every trace and influence you have on this world, whether directly or indirectly, gone
I don’t think even she’s thinking anything about defiance after the devastating sentence brother day just gave her. The reality of what has happened and what she faces is just sinking in. Brother Day chose his revenge so that there would be no defiance.
It would have cheapened the scene for her to her have flippant remark.
He has essentially lied. He remembers her and lives. So she still has a legacy.
I'll only keep on watching the show as long as Lee Pace appears in it.
Exactly. Terence Mann and Jared Harris also helped carry the show. Other than that, the only other strength were the visual effects. The actresses who played Gaal and Salvor were boring as hell.
Lee pace is scary as a cold blooded emperor. No emotion at all when. Delivering the verdict.
I think it was the punishment being delivered, the verdict was a forgone event.
She's obviously in shock, but the last thing she could have said was "I'll savor that memory until the day I die.".
The performance is GOLD. I selfishly, kinda, sorta/wanted to see the particle beam in action.
After Jared Harris, Pace is the only thing that keeps me watching this. Incredibly great performance.
Some hearts are dangerous to break. She learns nothing dead. An education in horror.
Lee Pace is amazing.
Chilling.
Revenge cold and elegantly done.
this scene is so iconic, and how he resembles the entire power with the touch of his fingers, shows integrity and domiance around him, makes everyone fall with the gaze of his resemblance. Lee Pace is an underatted actor, but plays characters so well, espcially villains.
This was probably the most powerful scene in the entire season. The magnitude of cruelty being inflicted was terrible to imagine.
Oh my gosh I love Lee Pace…
A punishment that only an emperor of an interstellar hyper power can dispense!
Darkness, imprisoning me
All that I see, absolute horror
I cannot live, I cannot die
Trapped in myself, body my holding cellllllllll
Lee Pace, has taken my sight
Taken my speech, taken my hearing
Taken my arms, taken my legs
Taken my soul, left me with life in Helllllll
This is on a par with the punishment in that black mirror episode 'White Bear'.
Having a massive (on a galactic scale) drug program to keep possible malcontents docile has the potential to backfire and make the “regular joe” citizen concerned for their personal liberty. A great authoritarian system is invisible in it’s repression, like Day in this scene.
That’s what I was wondering too. He says for the rest of her life, but how long would that really be cut off from all sensory input?
The irony is that with the deaths of 1,551 people, even if the cause is never known, he has ensured her legacy will live on in the psyches of those who knew the victims. Her legacy is the truth that he is tyrannous and mad with no restraint. He is her legacy, the last person she has affected.
This show has some great actors. I hope that black chick that was “poisoned” didn’t actually die. Her speeches were powerful. Oh.. and this scene was one of the most evil scenes ever. So low key evil
But you'll remember me!!!!!
That is my legacy!!!!!!
I love him! This scene was fantastic
He left himself and his dad off the list and she will live rent free in their minds for the rest of their lives - her legacy.
On the bright side at least he spared the lives of her garden plans! I think, unless I misheard.
Lee Pace, Terence Mann and Jared Harris absolutely carried this show. If not for them it would have just been pretty visual effects.
This scene was absolutely COLD-BLOODED... Wow!
and u thought blowing two planets to oblivion was cold? even if this is true and this caused way less deaths than wat Dusk caused when he was Day i still think this was more ruthless
I hated her for how she manipulated Dawn and i was hoping for Day to kill her but this fate actually made me feel sry for her
and every CKII player quietly went...."yah i've done that to a person who murdered my heir"
Her: "I'm going to fuck with this all powerful dudes son...I'm sure nothing bad will happen"
Also Her: "Well fuck..."
The Empire parts of Foundation are possibly my favorite sci-fi I’ve seen.
Cleon did what a father who loves his son would do to the person who hurt his son and also triet to kill his son,and in the end his son died because of her actions
Lee Pace made this show *chefs kiss*
The fact we've seen this wrist flick work in previous episodes makes this work. But even then, even if he doesn't speak the truth, she'll never know.
This scene really and truly got under my skin. What a fate 😬
Haunting! Doubt he was bluffing about killing all those people. He did after all completely wipe out innocent planets after a few took down the sky bridge.
That was Dusk, actually. But I agree about the not bluffing part
Of all the dates I’ve seen or heard I media, movies, shows, and games, this by far takes the cake.
Absolutely brilliant stuff. Just incredible. Unfortunately, anytime Lee Pace and Jarred Harris weren't on the screen, this show just crashed and burned.
Well, the other Cleons were interesting too.
It's difficult to fathom that level of power
Congatulations, you've just created 1551 martyrs. That will have made a meaningful mark on another 800 lives on average. That will escalate rather quickly.
Channeling his inner Joe MacMillan and Ronan.
Azura’s face at the end of that scene is what soul crushing looks like.
Automated room for the rest of your life no senses = insanity, mind cannibalism.
Can't wait to watch the next season! This series is so good!!
This is SO brutal, I LOVE IT!!!
Oh he did it. Emperors don't operate on the same level as the rest of us.
interestesting, but her network was a real danger
He ordered orbital bombardment against two planets because of the actions of two terrorists after all.
@@robwalsh9843 That wasn't the same Day.

It was more powerful the way they did it.
@@countdowntorevolution9986 - agreed, imagination is powerful.

This scene, the monologue, and the way it was presented shocking and memorable.
Lesson learned, remember to turn your location off.
Lee Pace é um excelente ator. Amo
I watch this clip from time to time and it leaves me unsettled for a while, every time
Still less harsh than what a mom would do to a woman who broke her son's heart :)
"And though she wished for death, she was unable to die. So eventually, she stopped thinking."
watching this after pushing daisies, damn lee pace has some serious acting range
He's a monster ...an absolute monster..
This clip made me watch the series. Thanks for the upload
This scene and subplot shows how little the showrunners understood about the Foundation story.
This doesn't show an empire already crumbling, as Seldon proved.
