@jaretco6423 I mean, in U's case, there's definitely more than just a few powerups. I'm gonna name a few. 1. Nabbit: the biggest new thing from Mario U. He's the only new non-enemy character from the NSMB series. The only other mainline Mario game he's in is Wonder. 2. Interconnected World Map: First Mario game to reuse the concept since Super Mario World, and it makes the world map feel somewhat populated. 3. Baby Yoshis and their new functions. Also came back from Mario World, but now they don't just grow into normal Yoshis. They have unique abilities that help out casuals and are pretty trivial for more experienced players. 4. New music tracks. There might be only like 13, including world map, final boss, etc., but that's more than NSMB2.

In New Super Mario Bros Ds, Wii and 2, Mario starts at Peach's Castle and tries to Bowser's castle. In New Super Mario Bros U, Bowser (hand from airship) threw Mario and the others far away from Peach's Castle. Mario started from Acorn Plains and had to get to Peach’s Castle
idk if its just me, but i had always hoped for a NSMB HD collection that would release on the switch, that Has NSMB, NSMBWII, and maybe even NSMB2 if they want. Since people constantly complained about how it was getting stale. They could go back to the older games, polish or remaster the graphics (especially the first game) and put it out as 3 games in one. Just like Super Mario 3D All-Stars. It would probably be called NSMB All-Stars or something like that lmao.
I see this being a possible thing they do for the 40th Mario anniversary this year. Those games all sold really well and the people who grew up with them are all adults or becoming adults soon and would be able to bank on that nostalgia. I know I'd buy it lol.

My theory is that Nintendo wanted to do something different with 2d mario, or it was planned but canceled because of lack of time and resources because of all the new mario content we have been getting, (also love your vids, keep up the good work,)
I dont have a switch but new super mario bros on wii u and wii were very fun. four players running through together with the weakest links bubbling up was awesome. They need to make a whole game of just speed runs done in the NSMBs format, speed run levels on the star map at the end were amazing.
So true, there was a charm with NSMB. I loved its consistency and controls. Wonder would've been great if the kept player interactions and triple-jump, etc.

I think they will ditch a lot of element of wonder in the next game and focus on being a polished experience. Instead of seeing wonder as another Mario that fulfils the need of a original need of 2D Mario for casuals. It serves as Mario content made for fans and second-time owners as it is late in the switch lifecycle anyway, not as an introductory title like NSMB tends to fill.

@ If not I could see them at least doing a collection package for the 40th anniversary like they did for the 35th with 3D All Stars. Include DS, Wii, and 2 and with backwards compatibility that would give us the entire series on the Switch 2.
I think Nintendo also started that the development time was somewhat a problem but the mostly budget to keep costs of the game development process down so that why new super Mario bros just keep the same traditional style gameplay. And wonder just proves how they went above and beyond to make some as good that much it appears and play way different than new super Mario bros games did.
i like to imagine if the "New Super Mario Bros" games were just an trilogy instead of an launch title for every console that nintendo releases. it would be so much less repetitive and people won't be tired of having 6 games that almost have no difference between each other
We actually do have two New Super Mario Bros. 3. 3D Land and 3D World, and 3D World was ported over to the Switch. Those happens to be the last two New Super Mario Bros. games
I’m glad I’m not the only one who noted that the triple jump was missing in SMBW. You also can’t control the jump height of the spin jump in SMBW, which is also odd. I think the next entry needs to evolve the platforming moveset to include everything from past games (e.g. side somersault, ground pound to jump) plus some new moves to make the movement of Mario feel even more dynamic.
@@nvssgoat I've been replaying through it recently and I don't see it at all tbh. It's defo good and maybe it's harder to appreciate it now after 3 or 4 more new super games, but I feel like even at the time it didn't come close to trying to do as much as Wonder did NSMB doesn't feel like a game that was trying to be on the level of Super Mario World or 3, i felt like it was trying to be a solid 2d mario game, which i mean a solid 2d mario game is overall a great game but I rlly don't see it being over Wonder

My family loved the new super Mario games. On console with the absolute chaos on 4 players. And first new super Mario on ds, I remember when it came out I managed to talk my dad into getting it. He like Mario and was the only game he showed interest in, so on a family road trip I talked my dad into getting it for me. I was maybe 5th grade when it came out. Fast forward like 12 years and my brother was born and finally old enough to play so he played the crap out of it too. Sad so see Nintendo leaving it on the table.
The good news is that until Nintendo announces it, it doesn't exist, and you don't have to play it if it does end up existing. People like remakes. People like older games remade with modern sensibilities. It's nothing new, and asking "why" at this point just feels like a reason to express your personal disappointment over something that you never even have to think about
I never got the hate for the NSMB series. At the end of the day, they always gave a lot of content and were made for multiplayer madness than actual gameplay itself.
My idea: Nintendo spent a while making part of nsmb3, realized that they had many ideas for a different game, and pushed the Nintendo switch, but still was adding ideas to wonder, once they realized it would take much longer than expected, decided to take a small break porting nsmbu deluxe, then kept working on wonder
I have a feeling mario maker 2 did replace new super mario brothers but not an original 2d mario game. Super Mario Maker 2 can basically replicate most of the things new super mario can do and even do unique things that the new series can’t do. If they were to make another one that was once again, not too original, the backlash would have been insane. Not only cause you can get your infinite new super mario content already in mario maker but also cause mario u deluxe exists on the switch. While a part of me is sad that the series is dead (I especially miss that triple jump you mentioned), I think this is the next step Nintendo needed for 2D Mario.
The reason they didn’t make another new supe was because of Mario maker, but that also why we got wonder. The developers stated that they wanted to outdo what the fans did.
I don't agree with your first sentence. When Mario Maker was released, there was already an NSMB fatigue and I think it was a way by Nintendo to make the fans create their own ideas and get inspired by them.

Honestly I wouldn't mind another entry into the series. They should still focus on creating more unique titles like Wonder was, but that doesn't necessarily mean we just have to drop the New series entirely. I think with Wonder and how much time as passed a new title in this series wouldn't put a sour taste in people's mouths.
I loved Wonder, but I felt the level design paled in comparison to the New series. It felt that Wonder chose to focus on style and uniqueness (which is good in it's own right) over challenging or explorative experiences.

Have you even played the game on the wii u 😑 it did have a gamepad mode where the gamepad user could place blocks that could be used to help or troll the player by blocking their path and stop enemies and things.
Now that I think about it, it's weird that they called the 3ds one "2" because they technically made Wii before. So, Wii would actually be nsmb2, the 3ds would be nsmb3 and Wii U would be nsmb4. I guess Luigi u could be considered as nsmb5, so they already had a good number of games for the series. oh yeah and then there was Mario run.
I agree with you that Super Mario Bros Wonder is a completely different game. That’s like saying Mega Man 11 is a completely different game compared to MM9 & MM10 because it uses 3D graphics & not 8 bit graphics that Inti-Creates used.
I loved nsmb2 tho, I thought it was amazing considering it was basically my first 3DS game and probably my first Mario game, I beat the game so many times and I loved every single playthrough of it, I also had the Wii u which I loved super Mario bros u too and at the time I didn’t understand why it was hated on so much.
NSMBU was a missed opportunity. It didn’t kill the series as much exposed the staleness. They should’ve called it New Super Mario World and tried to make the art style more distinct. It would’ve helped the Wii U stand out more from the Wii
@@INFERNO95 I’m just saying that there are some similarities that Super Mario Bros Wonder has that are like Super Mario Galaxy such as getting a certain collectible at the end like Power Stars or Wonder Seeds and the final Bowser level throwing out all the stops even the name of the last level is similar to the last levels in Mario Galaxy games we have Bowser’s Galaxy Reactor, Bowser’s Galaxy Generator and Bowser’s Rage Stage
I agree! New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for Switch should be the *only* NSMBU title in everyone's library now. It's the definitive version in which it's in HD, Peachette is playable, & it also includes New Super Luigi U as the extra content.
@@WizardOfWor I have NSMBU deluxe on my Nintendo Switch since I never owned a Wii U to play the original version. I did enjoy it but I miss NSMBWii... my wii broke sadly so I'm unable to play the game.
@@WizardOfWorit removed an entire mode and there is a version with luigi u and nsmbu which most of the time you can find cheaper then nsmbu deluxe also toadette basically almost replaced blue toad entirely with him being locked behind a button press. Andd 2 players cant play as blue and yellow toad at once and in nslu in 3 or 4 players someone is forced to be toadette and nabbit which takes about half or 40% of the challenge away from it, And one more thing with the mid air twirl being mapped to the a button and you having to do some cheat code to remap it to the trigger buttons.
I also expected another NSMB game for Switch since there has been an NSMB on each Nintendo system since the DS but I'm glad they moved on and made Wonder.
I think Wonder was exactly what 2D Mario and the Mario brand as a whole needed. Keep in mind it wasn’t just the NSMB games in a vacuum but the whole Mario brand became more bland and safe. Like for example they had an internal rule which banned unique toads hence why Toadsworth disappeared and paper Mario abandoned unique toads, koopas and goombas. I don’t think we will get an official “New” Super game again, but I think the next 2d Mario might bring back some old elements. I also think we won’t get so much a Mario Wonder 2 as much as just a new Mario game that takes elements from it. This is probably better for Mario to keep things fresh and new
@ yes at least for a while Like how in paper Mario there were unique toads with specific names and stuff at some point in Nintendo decided to do away with that and all toads just be generic multicolored ones. Now they could have different accessories and professions like Captain toad but he still just a toad. This is why we haven’t seen toadsworth in a long time and even for a while, we didn’t see toadette
I actually love nsmbu but you can feel its rushed. If the artstyle was nicer, the world themes were more fleshed out and it had more unique stage parts it'd probably be the best 2d mario, objectively speaking. Wonder is nice but it honestly felt like an overcorrection of the NSMB series' problems and ended up kind of forgetting what was GOOD about those games.
The reason mario wonder didnt do much for me is because it only focused on fixing what went wrong with thw NSMB games to the point where it neglects the core elements of what actually makes 2D mario games fun (Replay value, bosses, secrets, etc.) I ended up just selling the game second hand after I completed it 100%.
Bosses were never a major focus of 2d mario games. Since literally the first game it has always been level design, and imo Wonder has insanely good level design. I do somewhat agree on the secrets though, I seriously enjoyed the secret exists in World and they have never really came back, yes they came back in the nsmb series but they were few and far between, and imo they were fine but they didn't work like World secret exits. I also disagree on the replay value but that's more subjective, I think the game has more than enough variety between level themes, wonder effects, enemies etc. to warrant playing through many times, but that's just me and we could differ. My only actual issue with the game is the multiplayer, but I can understand why they removed collision. Even if there was a toggle, the levels are designed with no collision in mind, so I don't think I'd use it much. I mean even though I grew up with Wii and enjoy the multiplayer because of collision, playing through it solo or sometimes even with a second person is boring because the levels are so spaced out to allow for more space for 4 players.
My only issue I have with Wonder is the lacklustering bosses. But even than, everything else is an complete step in the right direction after the stale & repetitiveness that NSMB felt that fells to capture the 2D Mario element.
If new super Mario Bros 3 came to switch then I think it would be like the previous games well I feel like super Mario Bros Wonder would be way better if it came out yeah you are very correct about the more ideas did they wanted to bring that so that it would not be like the other five games
I am with the theory that they ran out of ideas, but to add to that, they are thinking too far out of the box with adventures. I grew up in the 8 and 16 bit era. One strange game was Super Mario World 2. It was indeed satisfying and fun to play, but it chronologically was out of place visually when it comes to squeals. Back then I kind of knew that there would never be a Super Mario World 3 after the 2nd one. Mario 64 would be the last good Mario game that had potential for a equal, but it never happened and they knew it because when you put all the previous adventures side by side from Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario World and compare them with the modern 2D adventures, you will find that today's adventures lack the nostalgia that we had back then when we were anticipating the next Mario adventure like how Super Mario Bros. 3 took us by storm and likewise when SNES debuted with the Super Mario Word previews. This is probably the reason why they invented Super Mario Maker.
Even if wonder came out, I really want them to go back to the previous formula and keep making “New” super Mario bros games. Like they can release nsmb3, nsmw, nsml, nsml2, and new super Mario bros the lost levels. I hope they don’t ditch the old formula. Plus when the 40th anniversary comes next year, I expect them to release a new super Mario all stars containing the original, Wii, 2, and even a never before released one like 3. Finally, I wish NSMBUD got free dlc, then it would be a true deluxe version

I think the better question is why is NSMB2 called NSMB2 when it’s the third one of the New series? I can’t really think of any good reason. Calling it 2 just because it’s on a ds based handheld just sounds like poor reasoning. It would even work better because 3DS
ngl, new soup 3 would have had a different style to it than the other 5 new soup games. I would have it be a homage to smb3 because nsmb and nsmb2 had some aspects of the original smb and smb the lost levels (impossible pack im lookin at you). but if it was like that it would may have not sold so well.
Yeah, as far as I'm concerned, Super Mario Bros. Wonder effectively *_is_* NSMB 3. It doesn't matter that it's significantly less challenging, or isn't quite the same 2D experience.

I don't hate wonder, but I do dislike it for taking away everything that made nsmb great for me, like being able to grab other players, all the other power ups, triple jump, not having an elephant power up ect...

It was never cancelled. In fact, that game was never officially announced either. A troll back in 2018 impersonated Nintendo and reuploaded Newerteam's Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii Deluxe trailer, and poorly edited the 3 on the trailer to make it seem legit (it kinda worked because I was 12 back then and I fell for it). I know this because I asked Meatball132 (one of the developers behind Newer Deluxe) back in 2021 on Reddit (which the community is no longer active since 2023 for a reason I forgot, you can view the reason if you try to open their community, it's written on there) what that was all about, he told me everything and also told me how Nintendo got their channel terminated and that his group striked the video down. So therefore, it's all just some guy behind a screen and impersonated Nintendo and stole Newerteam's trailer and replaced the name

@ If not I could see them at least doing a collection package for the 40th anniversary like they did for the 35th with 3D All Stars. Include DS, Wii, and 2 and with backwards compatibility that would give us the entire series on the Switch 2.
I think Nintendo also started that the development time was somewhat a problem but the mostly budget to keep costs of the game development process down so that why new super Mario bros just keep the same traditional style gameplay. And wonder just proves how they went above and beyond to make some as good that much it appears and play way different than new super Mario bros games did.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who noted that the triple jump was missing in SMBW. You also can’t control the jump height of the spin jump in SMBW, which is also odd. I think the next entry needs to evolve the platforming moveset to include everything from past games (e.g. side somersault, ground pound to jump) plus some new moves to make the movement of Mario feel even more dynamic.

My family loved the new super Mario games. On console with the absolute chaos on 4 players. And first new super Mario on ds, I remember when it came out I managed to talk my dad into getting it. He like Mario and was the only game he showed interest in, so on a family road trip I talked my dad into getting it for me. I was maybe 5th grade when it came out. Fast forward like 12 years and my brother was born and finally old enough to play so he played the crap out of it too. Sad so see Nintendo leaving it on the table.
The good news is that until Nintendo announces it, it doesn't exist, and you don't have to play it if it does end up existing. People like remakes. People like older games remade with modern sensibilities. It's nothing new, and asking "why" at this point just feels like a reason to express your personal disappointment over something that you never even have to think about

I never got the hate for the NSMB series. At the end of the day, they always gave a lot of content and were made for multiplayer madness than actual gameplay itself.
My idea: Nintendo spent a while making part of nsmb3, realized that they had many ideas for a different game, and pushed the Nintendo switch, but still was adding ideas to wonder, once they realized it would take much longer than expected, decided to take a small break porting nsmbu deluxe, then kept working on wonder
I have a feeling mario maker 2 did replace new super mario brothers but not an original 2d mario game. Super Mario Maker 2 can basically replicate most of the things new super mario can do and even do unique things that the new series can’t do. If they were to make another one that was once again, not too original, the backlash would have been insane. Not only cause you can get your infinite new super mario content already in mario maker but also cause mario u deluxe exists on the switch.
While a part of me is sad that the series is dead (I especially miss that triple jump you mentioned), I think this is the next step Nintendo needed for 2D Mario.
The reason they didn’t make another new supe was because of Mario maker, but that also why we got wonder. The developers stated that they wanted to outdo what the fans did.
I don't agree with your first sentence. When Mario Maker was released, there was already an NSMB fatigue and I think it was a way by Nintendo to make the fans create their own ideas and get inspired by them.

Honestly I wouldn't mind another entry into the series. They should still focus on creating more unique titles like Wonder was, but that doesn't necessarily mean we just have to drop the New series entirely. I think with Wonder and how much time as passed a new title in this series wouldn't put a sour taste in people's mouths.

I loved Wonder, but I felt the level design paled in comparison to the New series. It felt that Wonder chose to focus on style and uniqueness (which is good in it's own right) over challenging or explorative experiences.

Now that I think about it, it's weird that they called the 3ds one "2" because they technically made Wii before. So, Wii would actually be nsmb2, the 3ds would be nsmb3 and Wii U would be nsmb4. I guess Luigi u could be considered as nsmb5, so they already had a good number of games for the series.

I loved nsmb2 tho, I thought it was amazing considering it was basically my first 3DS game and probably my first Mario game, I beat the game so many times and I loved every single playthrough of it, I also had the Wii u which I loved super Mario bros u too and at the time I didn’t understand why it was hated on so much.
NSMBU was a missed opportunity. It didn’t kill the series as much exposed the staleness. They should’ve called it New Super Mario World and tried to make the art style more distinct. It would’ve helped the Wii U stand out more from the Wii

@@WizardOfWorit removed an entire mode and there is a version with luigi u and nsmbu which most of the time you can find cheaper then nsmbu deluxe also toadette basically almost replaced blue toad entirely with him being locked behind a button press. Andd 2 players cant play as blue and yellow toad at once and in nslu in 3 or 4 players someone is forced to be toadette and nabbit which takes about half or 40% of the challenge away from it, And one more thing with the mid air twirl being mapped to the a button and you having to do some cheat code to remap it to the trigger buttons.

I also expected another NSMB game for Switch since there has been an NSMB on each Nintendo system since the DS but I'm glad they moved on and made Wonder.
I think Wonder was exactly what 2D Mario and the Mario brand as a whole needed. Keep in mind it wasn’t just the NSMB games in a vacuum but the whole Mario brand became more bland and safe. Like for example they had an internal rule which banned unique toads hence why Toadsworth disappeared and paper Mario abandoned unique toads, koopas and goombas.
I don’t think we will get an official “New” Super game again, but I think the next 2d Mario might bring back some old elements. I also think we won’t get so much a Mario Wonder 2 as much as just a new Mario game that takes elements from it. This is probably better for Mario to keep things fresh and new

Like how in paper Mario there were unique toads with specific names and stuff at some point in Nintendo decided to do away with that and all toads just be generic multicolored ones. Now they could have different accessories and professions like Captain toad but he still just a toad.

I actually love nsmbu but you can feel its rushed. If the artstyle was nicer, the world themes were more fleshed out and it had more unique stage parts it'd probably be the best 2d mario, objectively speaking. Wonder is nice but it honestly felt like an overcorrection of the NSMB series' problems and ended up kind of forgetting what was GOOD about those games.
The reason mario wonder didnt do much for me is because it only focused on fixing what went wrong with thw NSMB games to the point where it neglects the core elements of what actually makes 2D mario games fun (Replay value, bosses, secrets, etc.) I ended up just selling the game second hand after I completed it 100%.
Bosses were never a major focus of 2d mario games. Since literally the first game it has always been level design, and imo Wonder has insanely good level design. I do somewhat agree on the secrets though, I seriously enjoyed the secret exists in World and they have never really came back, yes they came back in the nsmb series but they were few and far between, and imo they were fine but they didn't work like World secret exits. I also disagree on the replay value but that's more subjective, I think the game has more than enough variety between level themes, wonder effects, enemies etc. to warrant playing through many times, but that's just me and we could differ.
My only actual issue with the game is the multiplayer, but I can understand why they removed collision. Even if there was a toggle, the levels are designed with no collision in mind, so I don't think I'd use it much. I mean even though I grew up with Wii and enjoy the multiplayer because of collision, playing through it solo or sometimes even with a second person is boring because the levels are so spaced out to allow for more space for 4 players.
My only issue I have with Wonder is the lacklustering bosses. But even than, everything else is an complete step in the right direction after the stale & repetitiveness that NSMB felt that fells to capture the 2D Mario element.
If new super Mario Bros 3 came to switch then I think it would be like the previous games well I feel like super Mario Bros Wonder would be way better if it came out yeah you are very correct about the more ideas did they wanted to bring that so that it would not be like the other five games

I am with the theory that they ran out of ideas, but to add to that, they are thinking too far out of the box with adventures. I grew up in the 8 and 16 bit era. One strange game was Super Mario World 2. It was indeed satisfying and fun to play, but it chronologically was out of place visually when it comes to squeals. Back then I kind of knew that there would never be a Super Mario World 3 after the 2nd one. Mario 64 would be the last good Mario game that had potential for a equal, but it never happened and they knew it because when you put all the previous adventures side by side from Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario World and compare them with the modern 2D adventures, you will find that today's adventures lack the nostalgia that we had back then when we were anticipating the next Mario adventure like how Super Mario Bros. 3 took us by storm and likewise when SNES debuted with the Super Mario Word previews. This is probably the reason why they invented Super Mario Maker.
Even if wonder came out, I really want them to go back to the previous formula and keep making “New” super Mario bros games. Like they can release nsmb3, nsmw, nsml, nsml2, and new super Mario bros the lost levels. I hope they don’t ditch the old formula.
Plus when the 40th anniversary comes next year, I expect them to release a new super Mario all stars containing the original, Wii, 2, and even a never before released one like 3.
Finally, I wish NSMBUD got free dlc, then it would be a true deluxe version

I’m pretty intrigued by how one of the best Mario games and the most mid Sonic game came out within days of each other (Wonder and Superstars.) My opinion ofc.
It was never cancelled. In fact, that game was never officially announced either. A troll back in 2018 impersonated Nintendo and reuploaded Newerteam's Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii Deluxe trailer, and poorly edited the 3 on the trailer to make it seem legit (it kinda worked because I was 12 back then and I fell for it). I know this because I asked Meatball132 (one of the developers behind Newer Deluxe) back in 2021 on Reddit (which the community is no longer active since 2023 for a reason I forgot, you can view the reason if you try to open their community, it's written on there) what that was all about, he told me everything and also told me how Nintendo got their channel terminated and that his group striked the video down. So therefore, it's all just some guy behind a screen and impersonated Nintendo and stole Newerteam's trailer and replaced the name
