  • After noticing that Cheyenne had developed a weird lump on one of her wings, we promptly made a vet appointment with one of the greatest bird veterinarians in our area (Dr. Plantz at Homey Gnome Veterinary Clinic). Lucky for us, they're located a mile away from the facility! After her inspection and a quick test, we're relieved to hear it's nothing too serious.

Cheyenne actually most of the time wears sweaters now!! Some fan made her some. To keep her naked chicken body warmish. It took her a while to get used to it and she ripped a few but it also helps to not pull out those feathers

Cheyenne is such a sweet bird. She’s so tolerant. Not many birds would be that good with all that handling and uncomfortable moving around. Especially with a stranger in a strange place.
It just shows how much Emily and Ed work with Cheyenne and socialize her.

As a vet tech at an exotic animal practice, bravo to you for how well you’ve desensitized your bird! Macaws are one of the more dangerous birds we work with (think about what a beak that can crack a walnut will do to your finger). Most of the time to do any services on them, we have to sedate them with gas, for their safety and ours. It’s always great when we have a bird that’s so well-handled and tolerant that we can do most services awake on them. Cheyenne is truly wonderful!
I’m happy to say I’ve not yet been bit by a macaw (hoping to keep it that way). I have, however, been bit by a sulfur-crested cockatoo. The bite cut almost down to the bone and caused nerve damage in my finger. It was numb for almost two months. And to think, If that bird had been Cheyenne’s size, I likely wouldn’t still have my finger!

    • @philippak7726

Dream clients! We have to sedate 90% of our large birds to do anything to them. Even to just do an examination. I always push for bloodwork and x rays while we have them down to make it count a little more than just a physical 😅

    • @kitsune0rei

I think people don't think about it or don't realize it's something they can do. Working with your pet beforehand to make exam type motions less scary makes things less stressful for everyone involved in vet visits! I watch a lot of zoo and shows, and I love that they train their animals to perform exam behaviors by choice. I also love Lori Torrini's channel- if she can train snakes to do things like get on a scale, I think most people can do it with their pet! I also know from the vet shows how dangerous sedation can be :

You’re very lucky to have multiple exotic vets nearby. Not everyone can find _one_ within a reasonable distance. We definitely need more exotic vets in the world.
ETA: I love that the clinic is called Homey Gnome! Lol.

    • @Annie_Annie__
      @Annie_Annie__ Рік тому +53

Right, when I had pet rats there were no exotic vets in my area.
I convinced my dogs’ vet to see them because he had experience with rodents from back in the day before vet practice was divided up like it is now. But that vet wasn’t comfortable doing surgery or anything like that.
If my rats had needed surgery, the nearest vet was a 3-4 hour drive away.
And once we got a single exotic vet, he charged three times what vets in big cities charged because he had no competition.
I wish there were more exotic vets and that there were more that specifically specialized in reptiles or birds.

My b&g had a large feather cyst. The vet said it wasn't worth putting her under surgery since it didn't bother her. Like your vet said. My girl eventually popped it herself and she removed most of the impaction and then after talking to my vet I was able to remove the rest and it was perfectly fine. It wasn't bloody or anything and the loose skin shrunk down.

10:42 this reminds me so much of our cat Venus. When she was a kitten we got her spayed (as per usual). She apparently had kept messing with her stitches and she got an infection in the surgery area.
We took her back to the vet and they cleaned it up and they put in staples as well as stitches.
Their recommendation was to put her in a onesie or a sweater (something to guard the site) since she did not tolerate a cone.
They also told us to use a warm compress every day.

I am happy you have a knowlegable vet for both birds and reptiles. I had aheck of a time when i bought a garter/ribbon snake who 2 days later gave birth to 24 babies and i didnt know who to see. Love you videos.

Poor baby Cheyenne, I'm sorry you had to take her to the vets. I know it's just one of those things you've gotta do when you have pets but it's never nice. I'm glad all is well and I hope you and ed are also well and she didn't scare you to much. Lots of love and take care x

i have a genuine fear of birds and just looking at photos of birds starts to freak me out but these videos make it a little less scary learning about birds. my best friend has a bird and i feel bad when she cant let him out when im there and these videos are my beginning to exposure therapy.

My grandmas African grey passed recently and his was such a big staple of my childhood even though he wasn't a very friendly bird. I love seeing how chill and tolerant Cheyenne is. My green cheek is going through his hormonal phase

Aww what a good girl! So glad to hear it’s nothing serious, was worried for a sec!! I have a kitty that gets cysts once in a while and I just put a warm wet(not soaked obv.) washcloth over it for a few minutes and then extract the grossness and they go away…she’s just tries to be too clean and her skin reacts to the constant licking causing them!

Cheyenne is the most behaved bird I’ve ever seen 😭 most birds especially other Macaws and parakeets/budgies/lovebirds/ always want to murder us. Cheyenne needs to chat with the other birds and tell them it’s all gonna be okay.
