    I want to say thank you for everything you and your team at Snake Discovery do. This evening I went to the Snake Discovery zoo and I adopted Shadow the 8 month old bearded dragon. Hailey was so sweet and helpful when my girlfriend and I came in. She was very sympathetic when I told her about suddenly losing the special needs baby bearded dragon (not from Snake Discovery) I was going to be bring home next week. I gave Shadow the new name Phoenix. He's settled in really well so far.

    I just want to say how grateful I am for you guys. It has been a horrible day, and seeing this pop up brought a smile to my face.
    Also, I learned enough from you guys to be able to rescue my own snake from being killed by her own owner.
    The story for those who asked!
    My friend works at PetSmart (I’m not an influencer so I have no issue slamming this company) and truly is a wonderful person and hard worker. She tries to make that environment better. A couple came into her store looking to purchase a snake. They were about 20-25 or so. They checked every box for being a good match and owner, and so they purchased a young ball python. The snake was in blue, and being bought and transported while in shed must’ve been very scary for him. Also, the new owners decided not to let him acclimate or even shed before trying to handle him. This snake has bitten someone in the past, but instead of working to fix the issue, they decided this was just an issue with the snake. They tried to take him back, but this PetSmart in particular refuses to take back pets. So they brought him back home and deliberately began to not feed him and let him rot away so they wouldn’t have to do anything but wait till he died.
    It’s disgusting.
    My friend, not knowing what they decided on doing, reached out to them and let them know that she could temporarily take the snake and try to find it a new home. Truth be told, she had a bad feeling, and even though she had nowhere to keep him, she took him and frantically reached out to me. I spent 500 dollars worth of supplies that night and drove over an hour away to pick him up, literally fuming at how he looked. He was actually a she, and was never named. Maybe this is a goofy name, but I named her Toast, and she is doing fantastic now. She has grown a foot since I’ve had her, and she went from having a scratchy container, to a 40 gallon tank full of enrichment. She even has a pet rock named Howard to keep her company. I’m still trying to find her a new home as I’m hiding her from my landlord (who lives hours away and doesn’t visit, so it’s not that scary). If anybody lives near Charlotte, North Carolina, comment and maybe I can finally find her a forever home!

    I've never been afraid of snakes or anything. But what really convinced me that they make good pets was seeing how much Ed and Emily love their animals. Somehow I never expected a reptile breeder to love their baby snakes the way a dog breeder would love a new litter of puppies.

    • @chuckthebrindlepittie6820
      @chuckthebrindlepittie6820 Рік тому +3

      Maybe watch more closely. There have been mistakes made, real and also potential tragedies caused by delayed attention to to new eggs, and by not "cutting" eggs to allow the unborn snakes to emerge (with or without cutting teeth). Also, eggs left too long to be separated. I have loved Snake Discovery, but recently they seem too busy or preoccupied to intervene in a timely matter. "Breeders" tend to care less and less about their tiny charges. I see this trend. The videos are hurried and rather chaotic. We once saw tranquil, adorable hatchings. Now it seems to be forced and rushed, with Emily speaking in a shrill voice. i would like to see more of Ed.

    • @Wonwoosonlywife
      @Wonwoosonlywife Рік тому +9

      @@chuckthebrindlepittie6820 I kinda see where you're coming from but I don't think those are terrible things. Every breeder has made a mistake at least once. It's a given.
      Just think about this, snake eggs wouldn't be separated in the wild. Plus, a large amount of eggs (if not all) have an adhesive like substance to keep them together. This helps them maintain a good heat throughout incubation. Of course, in captivity, they don't necessarily need to be stuck together since the incubator will keep them at a consistent temperature. However, in most cases it doesn't hurt to keep them together. And with not always being able to cut the eggs, that's fine. Cutting the eggs just gives them a better chance of survival but it's not going to guarantee anything.
      With the two of them now running a zoo and an adoption program, they aren't going to have nearly as much time. That's fine. || Also, Emily has always done the high pitched voice. So many pet owners do that, it's not just her. I think that shows that she enjoys doing it and it's not forced. And Ed is camera shy which is why he's usually behind the camera.

      So, the only "new" point you raise is about them running the zoo, rescue and the shop, new warehouse, frequent trips to shows -- correct, their work lives have changed. I am being too picky about the videos. I miss seeing the "old-timers" -- the animals we already know and love. To me, the babies are overrated. They are bred to be sold, with rare exception ("holdbacks.") So nothing charming or warm-hearted there. Cute for 5 minutes on camera. I guess I am person who IS tired of all the babies. I like the oldsters and permanent residents.

      Most of what they carry is like being bitten by aggressive sandpaper and you get used to it. It's the "mildly" and higher venomous ones that are nasty because you can get an allergic reaction to any snake at any time. You could get an allergic reaction just from the saliva. WH bites not so bad, but a large hoggie or things like FWC a lot less fun. Do not get bit by Tegu, Iguana or 3ft+ monitors - they are more than capable of snapping your wrist if they death roll..

    So, this is silly. But I really appreciate the fact that y'all show on camera getting bitten by the snakes, so that we can see how completely not a big deal it is. I think we have the idea of snake bites so built up in our minds (or at least I did) that it really helps to see that being bitten by a hognose is really no worse than being bitten by a cat.

    • @elizabethsullivan1894
      @elizabethsullivan1894 Рік тому +2

      Actually, cat bites can be kind of dangerous, as they carry bacteria that can pierce deeply and cause infections in humans. Mayo Clinic reported in 2014 that one in three patients with cat bites required hospitalization (although, that is presumably only one in three patients who actually reported their cat bite so the proportion is probably kind of off). This is not to say you should be super scared of snakes but rather a PSA that if you get bitten by a cat you should actually take it seriously.

    • @rosiehawtrey
      @rosiehawtrey Рік тому

      Depends on the snake and the person. Get a hognose ident wrong in US you just got bit by a rattlesnake. Get a Smooth Snake ident wrong and it'll be an Adder..
      The more times you get snake chewed the higher the likelihood of allergic or anaphylaxis reactions.
      But mammalian pets are much more dangerous re pathogens and some carry venoms that don't have antivenin. Platypus and Slow Loris a good example.
      And a Western Hognose bite will cause oedema and that can cause compartment syndrome. You never ever want to go there.

    • @snakewithapen5489

      @Rosie Hawtrey I'm pretty sure only the most drunk or stupid person could get a hognose mistaken for a rattlesnake, from a distance where they're close enough to get bitten. Bullsnake, sure. But the only similarity hognoses have to rattlers at all is a vaguely similar pattern. Size, body shape, head shape, and most importantly the defense mechanism is all wrong

    Emily, Like most rear-fanged snakes, the venom of the Malagasy giant hognose snake is not fatal to humans, though it can cause local pain or swelling for several hours. I just looked it up on Google.

I've bought my first ball python and saw a long tail boa and held one and she was the most calm and puppy dog tame. The video doesn't do any justice to the color of the baby and adults.
