- Our Blue & Gold Macaw, Cheyenne, has been a feather-plucker since before we adopted her. We've tried EVERYTHING to get her to stop, but nothing has worked... until now! Well, sort of. At least we can distract her from her feathers a bit ;) Our fan Sabine hand-crocheted some beautiful sweaters for Cheyenne!

As a crochetor , I can say our stuff can get warm. So in the summer be careful to make sure she doesn’t get too hot.
could probably use a light cotton yarn for the summer

I think Cheyenne getting the sweater for the first time is like a human who’s been barefoot their entire life trying on socks. It was weird at first, so they take off the socks. When forced to wear socks again, they see how soft and warm the socks are, albeit different and strange. Hopefully Cheyenne can keep those sweaters on!

@@davidsantiagotate7380 That's what happens when you put socks on a baby human for the first time. They'll keep taking them off until they get used to it
I hated sweaters and even starched shirts when I was a kid. Still don't wear them. A bird's non-feathered skin must be at least as sensitive. She may get used to it, as did Rhea the Naked Birdie, but I'd try a smoother kind of cloth and see how that works.
I've found that with birds persistence with respect is the key.

Some are, but a lot are not. It’s common for a community to gain a reputation through hate-popularity, and people just talk about how bad the few rotten eggs are, and not look deeper into the community as a whole. The Snake Discovery community is one of the most nice and kindest (online) communities that I know, and I hope more people will actually look at the entire community instead of focusing on the few bad ones.

Emily and Ed being wonderful doesn't mean Pettube isn't still problematic. While you have people as awful as Brian Barcyk, Taylor Nicole Dean, and AfroHerpKeeper, but you also have people as awesome as Snake Discovery, Clint's Reptiles, and GoHerping.

My sister has a rescue parrot...I laughed so hard when I saw Emily flip Cheyenne over and she stayed like that because my sister's bird would flip tf out if someone did that LMAO
I’ve had birbs and they are stupid and adorable and I love them. Mine loved being held like an ice cream cone and loved laying on their backs and getting belly rubs and scratches. They did weird things and were adorable all the while. Birbs are strange and adorable. I like them.

I love when Emily tries the second one on her and sits with her on the couch frustrated and then finally just runs up the stairs like “I’m not doing this anymore, she’s going to bed.” It was such a mother-daughter reaction lol.
I believe I did almost the exact same thing with my kiddo today.
I do this with my toddlers all the time. It’s very much a mom move. I felt that moment so deep.

The fact that Cheyenne pinned as soon as she saw Emily was adorable. I love these videos with Cheyenne, she truly is Emily and Ed’s child. The amount of love they show her is just like a parent to a human child.

If you look in future videos, Cheyenne is wearing sweaters! It seems like she really fell in love with them.
Yeah and in the video of Cheyenne goes to the vet recently she got embarrassed when her naked belly was shown.
Well at the end of the day being covered definetly feels closer to being feathered than the fresh breeze of naked skin.
I love how they just start going like: we could do a 4th of July one, a st. Patrick one, ugly Christmas sweater, snake discovery one!
I wonder why there hasn't been a vest that has fake feathers implanted in the vest. That way the bird would think she's preening but still keep her skin safer and not exposed
She might swallow the fake ones if it’s plastic but if not then yea I agree
ideally they want to stop the habit altogether, so maybe giving her more feathers to preen is not the best solution, but if push comes to shove and such a vest is feasible, if the feathers are safe and poses no risk of overheating, then sure
Yeah i was trying to figure out the logistics of this but the issue would likely come from attaching the feathers to the fabric. They break very easily and sewing needles usually cause them to split. Glue would be stiff and uncomfortable and you would also need to use the right kind of feather because wing feathers on her belly wouldn’t work. I did think about lots of loops of yarn though. Especially if they were woven in to be pulled in an out intentionally
I feel like instead of practical feathers, there could be feather shapes made of natural/organic cloth or material.
@@adriannepowell4036 I think something like that would work better, feathers don't really do well in this bc as people mentioned they tend to degrade pretty fast and there's no good way to attach them but little strips of cloth would be perfect for them to fidget with
Cheyenne totally needs a sweater that looks as close as possible to the facility staff outfit (if there is one). After all, she works there too!

i wonder if the pattern could be modified to use something like a bobble stitch or a loop stitch to give her something on the sweater to pick at so she doesn't pick it apart as fast? maybe using a lighter wool so it wouldn't end up too bulky with the added texture :0

I also make these with a lining to make the sweater tougher a bit warmer and for birds that self inflict wounds
it is not suggested to use any natural yarns due to problems with possible crop impaction. acrylic is very difficult for the birds to pick apart.

As someone with Trichotillomania, I look to Cheyanne to know that I can still be pretty even if I pull. I understand how hard it is to stop, but I am slowly recovering and doing a lot better, I hope Cheyanne also stops plucking.

Same! Trichotillomania, and dermatillomania. Hats help for me, but luckily, it isn't as bad as it was back in grade school. (I looked like I had a patchy, balding mullet from how much I pulled. Make's me a lot less worried about trying new hairstyles now when I'm better about not pulling)
Same, my beard is so patchy because of this. It's at its worst when reading, as my hands tend to be fairly idle, but as long as I have both hands occupied it doesn't happen as much.

I wonder if the reason she picked the first one off so quick but left the second is because the first matched her actual feather colors? So she thought she suddenly sprouted a bunch of feathers? I'm not sure how good macaw's vision is, but its a theory!!
Macaws can actually see the same colors we can with some additional violet colors in the mix apparently. I thought the exact same thing - that the blue & gold colors might be triggering her preening habit whereas the orange wasn't because it's a different color

Immediately assumed hers was noticeably warmer, and saw the good of sweater 😊 unicorns the best one, other than that one, I love the ones that match her colors !
It made my day to see a formerly abused/neglected/unhappy parrot in an appropriate home where her new parents cherish her. Yet another theory: Cheyenne understands English perfectly, and she loves to be told how pretty she looks in her sweaters, added to the fact that they afford her extra attention from her parents in general.
Joann needs to use this as an advertisement for an etsy shop. Great job Sabina!

a dumb thought i had as a kid was that birds where half plant as their feathers looked like leaves and that they where "real life pokemon"
so 6 year old me would say "why does bird not have leaves? you know you have to water it and put it in sun right?"

I’d be happy to make anything you like for Cheyenne. I notice the orange one has some mods from the original - I think the ribbed collar might make a difference. Also, I wonder if she might prefer a particular fiber over another.

Yes, I think the collar made a big difference! It does look different from the pattern linked in the description.
My theory is that the collar either acts like a thunder-shirt for dogs (the compression calms her down) or restricts her head movement just enough to make plucking more uncomfortable that just leaving it.
With a black sweater with your logo Cheyenne can wear a snake discovery uniform and work with you at the facility once it opens xD

I feel so fortunate to have avoided plucking with my parrotlet, she lost her mate and we were concerned it was illness so we transitioned her to being a pet bird and she took it with grace, nice to see Cheyenne thriving tho!

Macaws are amazing creatures and it's so heartbreaking that anyone would treat Cheyenne poorly. But, she looks _adorable_ in her little sweaters! And it's really good that they work!
I had a dog who came to us a little older (4 months) and he used to pull all of the hair off of his butt. The vets could never figure out why he did it. We had to keep doggie pajamas on him that covered all four legs. He looked absolutely _ridiculous_ when we took him on walks, but it worked.
The amount of love that you guys have for Cheyenne is so heartwarming.
I think the thicker neck was the key, sorta like a weighted blanket for people with anxiety! I hope they continue to work!

I'm a newer subscriber so I saw the video of y'all taking Cheyenne to the vet and her putting her sweater back where it should be first; it made this video all the sweeter, knowing she now really loves her sweaters.

Such a pretty nicely mannered girl.. there’s no way I could get even a harness on to my grey.. just glad he dosent really pluck.. he does barber the odd tail feather if I go out all day once in a blue moon but luckily for both he and I I don’t do that very often..
I am glad you have a rescue and that you are open about her plucking.. too many people take on a parrot without fully understanding how much attention they need .. hopefully it will put off people who don’t have the time and encourage people who can commit to getting a rescue.. much love me and Georgie boy xxx

I'm so happy you guys found something that seems to work! I hope to hear an update in a month or so about how it's going. Maybe she'll actually grow a few feathers back lol. But even if she doesn't, she's a beautiful girl.
thank you for linking the crochet pattern in the description I may end up making some to send to you and/or donate to local bird rescues/rehabs because I know feather plucking is a fairly common issue for neglected birds

I can relate to this bird, I have tricotillomaina. It warms my heart to see that somebody is going through the same thing. Even tho the bird is half bald she is still beautiful. Hope this helped anyone
My dad used to breed all kinds of birds. He found that sodium deficiency was a common cause of plucking feathers. His solution was to put some salt in the bottom of their cage. If they need the salt, they'll eat it to feel better, and if they dont need the salt the birds will ignore it. I hope this helps in some way.
most bird owners avoid salt like the plague. most birds: love me some salty junk food!
I really love Cheyenne and identify with her because I've had a really bad anxiety disorder and PTSD for years because my parents didn't know how to not punish mental illness and I ended up being placed practically in solitary confinement for a while. I started up a bad skin picking habit that persisted years after I finally moved out and I'm still dealing with it now, though I've been working really hard on replacing it with other habits and releases like a skincare regimen, fidget gadgets, and gardening when I feel my anxiety spiking, but it's a hard habit to break. I really feel for Cheyenne because she doesn't really have the understanding and tools to handle it like we do, so I'm super glad that she likes the sweaters now. I hope that she continues to love them and that she is able to move on from the obsession in some way to find some kind of healing.
