  • The Yamaha R-N800A Network Receiver is the middle sibling of three new streaming amps released late last year by Yamaha. It features 100W x 2 at 8 ohms, and has enough inputs to satisfy anyone with multiple components. As a network streaming receiver, the mobile app is just as important as the specs. This is something Yamaha played very close attention to, and it shows. Thanks for watchin!

I got one and it sounds awesome. I have not used the YPO yet. I have been just adjusting via my ears. I will give it a try soon. I have it powering a SVS PB1000 and the new SVS Evolution bookshelfs. MAN THEY SOUND AWESOME

Great in depth analysis of the amp. About to snatch one up and very curious to see if I’ll like the results from YPAO.

Just bought this amp in silver today, I also got some bowers and Wilkins 606s3 with the stands. I love the convenience of streaming music and this will take over from my Naim muso which is amazing but I missed having true stereo.

Thanks, this was a good review. I have the N-800A in a small room with tower speakers and the room correction is an absolute must have. Not many stereo amps have room correction, but if you put speakers in a less than optimal room (which is probably most people) it really is beneficial and improves the speakers.. I really could not use an amp without it, even though the room is sound treated. I also like how easy and fast YPAO is to use. Music cast is also great, much better than Denon's app or Bluesound app (which I both have in another room)

I just ordered mine waiting for it to come. Glad to hear you like the amp. I connecting bookshelfs and a SVS sub. Is there any way to adjust the crossover for the sub on the amp? Any way any response would be great.

Nice review. Interesting to hear about how great the app is since I don't use it much. (Though I learned some helpful things in this video, so that might change.)
I've been very happy with my R-N800A. Unlike most professional reviewers and dedicated audiophiles, my very listening area is very compromised, and rhe YPAO is very helpful.

I think once you make some tweaks to it, it's much better. The default setting wasn't for me, that's all. Enabling the special EQ feature in the app to enhance bass + treble at low volumes is a great touch.

@GadgetryTech do you need to use the app for this or can it also be done on the amp itself? Just curious if this amp is app dependent.

I have ax592 from the 90's. The power amp looks very similar. It even has the foam strips on the heat sinks. Probably because they could ring without the strips.

Perhaps a bit unusual question: Would it be possible to connect Mojo 2 to this device and bypass its internal DAC but still keep the amp power? I just need more power and streamer for my Kef R3 meta speakers but want to keep Mojo 2 DAC in the loop.

I own this amplifier. Great machine, but I hate operating the tuner. The display is so small and shows only one thing at the same time. Too bad. It's hard to see/know whether you're using analogue, DAB or NET radio stations.

I'm torn between this model and the R-N1000A. Right now, the R-N800A is on sale for $899 and the R-N1000A is on sale for $1,499. I don't really want/need HDMI so it really boils down to the claim that the more expensive unit has "better/audio grade" components vs. the lower priced one. How much difference does that make???? Does it sound any different? At this point, I'm willing to go with the R-N800A and add an external amp in the future which would likely make this a non-issue. Thoughts? Thanks for the great video!!!!

It’s a very good receiver but you need a pre out amp added to this and there is no tape loop for a high end Tascam cassette deck which I wanted to add to this. Yamaha should’ve included that given the price point. They don’t typically. I use an Emotiva basX a7 and switched to a crown for now. Nice review thank you

    • @Audiorevue

What are you talking about, this is basically a integrated amp although you could also call it a receiver or a streaming amplifier, the names are endless.
Yes it doesn't have a tape loop but I don't understand what you mean by it needs a pre-out amp, that doesn't make any sense.
This machine has everything you need in the unit ready to go, you just need to hook up speakers. It does have a pre-out which enables you to hook it up to an external power amp if you ever found you needed more power or what have you.

  • @robertstellato460
    @robertstellato460 7 днів тому

I’m just saying it needs an amp that’s all I’m saying I have an amp hooked up to it, but it won’t be good just on its own. It’s just very clean crystal sound that’s it there’s no bass and I’m not the only person who has said it you need an amp hooked up to the preamp that’s what I’m talking about and that’s what everybody agrees with. Thank you and there should be a tape loop on it. They got lazy, everybody is using tape decks now the newest high-end task would be perfect for it, but Yamaha won’t do it. I’ve already talked to the text many time about this. I got this. Don’t worry about it.

If you can post a comment on youtube then I guess you can take a couple days to learn how to use this amp. But I guess that's only worth it if you're gonna make use of some of the streaming services like Spotify, Tidal, etc. If you're gonna stick to only your collection of CDs and vinyl then I guess 801 is a good choice as well.

    • @Audiorevue

I've heard the older ones, and I think the newer ones do have a different sound to them. It still has that classic Yamaha sound but to me The new ones sound a bit warmer.
I personally like that about it, power is about the same I suppose in terms of perception of power. The volume is now more of a digital volume in the sense that the power doesn't come on until 60 or 70% of the volume but it's just the way that it works, meaning there's nothing wrong with it.
Personally I like the newer one I think the build quality in my opinion is just a hair bit better than the old one, I always felt the older Network receivers they did were always a little chintzy feeling especially with like the knobs And switches, the newer ones just feel a bit more precise and tactile And premium.
In regards to the 800 versus the 1000 I would say that there isn't a huge difference between them not sound quality wise. I heard both in a store in Houston and I couldn't really hear much of a difference. I think it really comes down to like a build quality thing And features. The 1000 having a little bit better feel to everything versus the 800 and of course it has the HDMI as well.
I say save the $700 like I did and just buy the 800 you won't be disappointed

I have the R-N800A and CXA80 now , so I think I can answer your question. Before I decided to keep the much cheaper used CXA80, I had the CXA81 and tested both amps side by side, and they sounded pretty much identical. But strangely the CXA80 has tone control knobs which I need for my B&W speakers, I decided to keep the CXA80 instead. In short, both R-N800A and CXA80/81 are powerful amps, They can power my 4ohm Martin Logan towers(60XTI and Motion 40i) without any issues at all. You can't go wrong with either amp, but I prefer the Yamaha since it pushes out the bass from my speakers slightly more. The tone control does work on the CXA80, but the changes in sound is not as noticeable as the Yamaha. IN short, get whichever you pay less for. If you can find a CXA80 for around $500-600 like mine, I would skip the Yamaha all day especiailly if you are using the amp for bookshelf speakers. Hope that helps

I listened to both. The Yamaha is a little bit brighter and strict, more detailed sound. The Cambridge is kinda natural. I preferred the Yamaha amp and bought it. Also, it depends on the acoustic you have.
I always recommend listening by your ears and don't look at advice in internet
