Incidentally, the two genres blend together very well.

actually punk sounds very much like metal should be redefined as a type of metal in my opinion anyway as for the difference between metal and rock well rock is played slower and lighter also is more simple and metal is also heavier

Another thing is that both of them have specific guitar sound. One metal band made cover of a punk hit, and in their interpretation it sounded metal, although melody was the same.

cosmic338 Punk has solos, about the exact same as metal, this guys using chords as the only tell for what punk "supposedly" sounds like. Truths is the're metal songs that only use chords like his punk example. The only real differences in punk and metal are song structures, band attitudes and Lyric styles.

It's not "lazy" it is just more straightforward and raw. It is the essence of the genre.
I don't know if you've ever been to any punk or even hardcore punk show, but they are often intense as fuck with the musicians going nuts. You rarely find this level of intensity in most metal songs. Metal is more about composition and musicianship.

Metal and punk both can have a mainstream sound, and punk rock has an enormous amount of diversity just like metal. And neither genre wins; it depends on the skill of the musician. The elements of any one genre of music can't limit the skill or creative genius of a musician who utilizes it.
***** Well, take doom, which requires more artistic sense than it does skill in terms of shredding, and compare it to D-beat, which requires less artistic sense, but more skill in terms of drumming. Of course D-beat was invented by metal artists, but still.

Except the whole point of a band t shirt is to express your love for that particular band and so other fans of the band can spot those people in a crowd. That point is completely nullified by people who wear the shirt to look cool therefore destroying the entire fucking point of a band shirt.
C Tambling Yeah it's pretty awkward when you try to start a conversation by talking about the band on their shirt (Misfits, Metallica, Nirvana, Ramones are some common ones), and it turns out they haven't even listened to them once. I don't know, I would never be comfortable wearing a bands merch if I didn't know them.

I think I can see the difference. Metal is more harsh and raw sounding while Punk has a classic rock feel to it. Metal sounds like more effort is given into the chords and the picking while Punk just sounds laid back. Punk sounds like something someone would listen to just to have fun and not give a shit while Metal sounds more like something someone would listen to to be impressed and just be in awe of the skill. I call it a draw, they both sound like something awesome to rock out to. Also something I noticed is that Punk is more consistent with the beat. Metal has frequently more chaotic beat than Punk. The Punk beat sounds more frantic but still maintains its constancy with the beat. Great track, really blends the two styles real nice.
Metal can be played with one instrument (the electric guitar). For punk to sound like punk you NEED a singer, drummer, bass player, and guitar player. You can't have punk without all 4 ingredients. I agree with everything you said btw.

blancarenfro64 Thanks for the backup, when I said that metal only needed a guitar I said that because this video is representing both genres with nothing but an electric guitar, so it is unfair considering that metal can be well represented with just that instrument. Punk is nothing special when you just show them the guitar bits. Rock on man, Metal and Punk are the two best genres/sub genres of rock, they certainly shouldn't be compared in a way like this video did though.
GarrysDude I like your thinking man. I for one love music. I have been playing ukulele (search Jake Shimabukuro) since fourth grade and I'm a high school sophomore now (I'm 15, deal with it). I've been wanting to learn some licks on the guitar but I don't have a guitar to practice on. I've started saving up for a Fender Eric Johnson Strat, and amp, pedal, and some headphones. I really want to learn some solos. Rock on too, spread the love.

I don't really thing there should be a "punk vs metal". A lot of punk inspired more of the extreme version of metal. Of course, when I say "punk" I am referring to 80s hardcore punk bands, such as Dead Kennedys, RKL, Agression, Bad Brains, and other iconic hardcore punk bands of that era.

Metal wins by far. The riffs are way harder to play, the solos are so much better and faster, it has way more diversity than punk and overall is just better sounding
