Back in the 70's my brother-in-law had a really hot 70 340 Duster that took out many big block cars. Seen it myself. Never underestimate a 340 Duster.....
I'm the owner of the Duster. This race was not actually a shootout but a bye run for both cars. The organizers had recorded the chevelle's best qualifying time incorrectly on Friday at a 13.62 I believe which was way faster than the car had ever been according to the owner. I had qualified at 13.64@100 and the car ran in that range all day Friday. Saturday pairings came out and the chevelle owner instantly discovered the mistake but it was too late to be changed at that point. Another interesting fact is the runs in the video are backward as I ran the 13.80 in the first round. The slower runs were 2nd and 3rd round. We did determine however that my secondaries were not opening on runs 2 and 3 which is why you see the big performance fluctuation. I actually ran a 13.59 on Saturday morning.
Duster does it again, this time with a 360. I've commented before that the 340 predecessor routinely seems to outrun even much larger, higher-rated engines. The plain-jane Duster reminds me of my old Ford Fairmont with a 302, which my Grandfather found and bought for me well-used in the mid-80's. I was hugely disappointed at first sight, but with bucket seats, a floor shifter, and enough power to leave tracks, the car quickly grew on me. I wished the previous owners had kept the oil changed. I give thanks for the much needed laughs. You made a lot of brave admissions here, and I salute your courage.
I’m a Chevy guy but I am also cheap, I gotta be honest if I were living in the Mid 70’s looking for a factory hot rod, I think the Duster would be my huckleberry! Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
I have a friend who had a 70 SS LS-6 Chevelle and I beat him in 1983 with my 427 66 Chevelle so he sold his SS so he could build something faster which he never did. Now he says he should have kept it because it would be worth a lot. I still have my 66. I’ve had it 43 years now.
That reaction time on the last race had me thinking he had another red light. That 360 surprised me as well, especially the last run. Great video! I like the shorts, but I love these long videos that give out the stats the best 👌
I 1980 I owned a 74 340 6 pack , 4 speed, After I was done building, I was pushing 569hp, 490 ft, I beat more big block than you can shake a stick at, A officer friend clocked me on rt15 Merrit parkway in Conn at 164mph, , He could not believe I was crazy enough to go that fast, On the raceway Lebanon Valley, 10.04 135 mph. Sad part I had to sell to divorce my first wife.
I grew up around Dodge boys, and they were hard core. With the money they had. But the 396 Chevelle was just a stud car!! I was lucky enough to get to run in a 1969 rambler SC and I had to laugh when my uncle who was a Dodge mechanic for twenty five years got beat in his 440 auto challenger. I loved both cars, it really bummed my uncle to get beat by the rambler SC that my brother owned. My uncle who always called me kid, had to wake me up,( working on the family farm) and let me know that my brother won in the scrambler. Just fun good ol'times JJ
Had a 70 Duster with a 360 transplant. Open differential but with low 6 cylinder gears; it would make tons of tire smoke. Also 73 Duster 340, and even stock, it was fast. That was with an auto and 3.23 gears. The Chevelle's weight is what hurt it the most.
Those dusters were always sneaky fast you would line up next to one by half track your looking at its tail lights. But I'm a chevy guy love a 70 chevelle ss big block 4 speed and the green and white racing stripes factory wheels awesome. Another great video thank you CZ.
Thanks for the great video, like a blast from the past. That Duster started so slow I was thinking that it was stock compression ratio but they both unleashed their full potential on the last run. That little dragon slayer 360 must have gotten the compression bump after all.
Had a 73 Duster with a 340 in high school. Added a Holley intake and four barrel carburetor along with a set of Blackjack headers and a shift kit for the automatic transmission. Added a quicksilver shifter also. What a fast little car it was. It would out run cars with much larger engines.
I agree with everything you said. I remember a 71 Duster 340 in high school. He would beat big blocks in GTOs , Chevelles and a 383 Superbee. The Duster was just a great combination of light weight and that 340!
Nice race and the way it would had been back in the day.....as far as stock runners as i remember......Chevs and Mopar always make a good race and that Mopar seems like a good virgin ride by the looks underhood.....I had better luck racing 383,s in my chevelle in a Roadrunner compared to a 340/360 duster running a 396 /4-speed back in the day till i went to jail for a week and lost my license 3 times.....Love your videos and the extra on the side man!!!!!
Dusters always rule, learned to drive on a 70 owned a 74 I miss it dearly never got tired of looking at the dash, while driving them thousands of miles they were quick too
Great video. Like the humor. Both great cars. Like all the makes including AMC. Duster was great. Wish I had one like that. In the front it reminds me of the 74 Plymouth scamp my parents used to have. Would have been the same platform as duster. Great race 👍
Has anyone ever heard of a 1970 Chevelle SS 350? I went with my brother when I was 14 to tow home a '70 Chevelle SS 350 that was blown. He had a '66 Chevelle SS 396 with a transplanted '70 or '71 LS 5 or else LS6 he put into the '70 but left the SS 350 badging on it. What a fast one that was! I never see '70 SS 350's but recall reading about their existence in One of the car mags from the'80s I was always buying. I think they where 300hp screamers. Forerunner of the LT1 370hp 350s
As any car guy knows it's what you're set up is. I have a 74 Grand Torino that'll smoke both of those cars with very little effort. I love these videos. I love seeing the old school muscle cars. Had a 74 Cuda replace the original 360 with a 78 police interceptor 360. Had way more power. Beat many cars on the steet. Fkn brother in law rolled it. 😢
Just wish you would post more, I love your channel. That Duster really improved so did the Chevelle in that last race, amazing cars both of them. did it get cooler later or something.
I think the Duster held back a wee bit until the last past. I could be wrong, could be nerves and he just got the hang of it. Anyway, good race, thanks for the vid!
Sorry I’m late to the party. Great video as always, fast cars and funny commentary - great mixture. Great racing by these two! Thank you as always ~ Chuck

I agree. When I was in automotive tech in the early '80s a good friend of mine in my class had a Dodge Demon which is similar to the duster. His older brother had a duster with 411 gears and a 340. Awesome. I've had several 360s which were totally stock. They would walk 350 chevys and the 400 chevys were and even match.
Thermoquad? 😊
I purchased a 75 Duster 360 brand new. It surprised a lot of cars at the stoplight drags.

Fn a right brutha
In some places, the duster ain't cheap, costing 10K for average condition with V8.
That reaction time on the last race had me thinking he had another red light. That 360 surprised me as well, especially the last run. Great video! I like the shorts, but I love these long videos that give out the stats the best 👌
Chuck Gross, 2nd run, the Chevelle had a red light and still lost that race. Duster won 2 out of 3.
I'm actually impressed that the 2 ton Chevelle ran as fast as it did with the base 402.
I have a 74 Duster with a 543. I love Dusters.

Wow! Didn't think the Duster could take him.
Power to weight ratio, my guy. Fat but sexy can't beat the lightweight nerd that's a black belt.

The weight difference alone is worth a solid half of a second! If I was to build a fast street car I would pick either the Duster or a Maverick.

My jaw hit the floor on that last run! 14.70, 14.60, 13.80
Yeahhh, I think he had an egg on the gas pedal the first two runs.

Absolutely

With the Mopar 360 and the Pontiac SD 455, the official ending of the Muscle Car era was 1974.
