Thanks !! Feel free to share ! I will probably start with mostly what I have, and see how close the package comes to the goals. But as always, changes are always made !!!
Wow ! Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I thought I was stretching it a bit at 13.99 with 2.94's and no headers and the 318 ! We'll know - - eventually ! LOL Thanks for watching!!
OK- 5.2 Magnum- There's 340 exhaust manifold$$. Then there are Jeep Magnum exhaust manifolds- driver's side dumps about where the stock 318 one does, but is over 2". Jeep Magnum passenger side may be too close to the firewall to work. I do early A-body cars so there may be fit differences. Unless you have a stash of the red 0.028 head gaskets you will need the thin composite ones. Your Machinist can redrill the Magnum heads to LA pattern for using a Performer intake manifold as it fits the RPM range your engine package may need. BHJ Products had some of the DIY Magnum to LA drillout fixtures last year. 80's non lockup 904 with stock wide ratio gearset- better acceleration with the 2.94 geared rear end, lower internal power loss, lighter than a 727. You can order the thin steels & friction disks and stack them to gain more clutch area in each drum if you wish. Any late 80's 318 Diplomat should have one. The lower factory gearset- 2.74/1.54/1:1 vs 2.45/1.45/1:1 pre-80's No floorpan mods required. Just some ideas- good luck!
I wished they still made the dual-plane M1 Magnum intake. Has a hot water passage under the plenum since there is no exhaust crossover. Cast-in passage from under the thermostat to where the normal crossover would be. The traditional thermostat bypass gooseneck is not used- plugged on intake. The water passes out of the manifold where the carb heat riser normally is. I ran a -6 hose from the heat riser area to the water pump thermostat bypass nipple. Drove the truck year-round as my daily, put 130K on on that engine. For my next truck engine I will use a Performer with welded aluminum bung fittings on the exhaust crossover and the exhaust passage welded shut on the ends. That way it can be plumbed like the MI I used to have since I drive in winter. For your Duster with a Performer I would not worry about heating the plenum with water.
Following. Sounds fun! I am on a similar mission with my Challenger. Comfort, drivability, and mileage. I'm going to cheat a little with a 518. But, I'm running a healthy 383. So I'm going to need O/D to achieve the goals.
You are Correct !!! We don't need another drag car/hot rod. We spend most of our time driving in the country side from small town to small town - it's the best way to get your favorite food !!!
Magnum 318 has 230hp 295 torque factory. 904 and 2.94's. Should be right there on the goals. Stock exhaust manifolds might foil the plans. Looking forward to the build!
Really!!! Cool!!! My first thought is to put the rear in first. Go from there. You have 3 motor to pick from. Start with what you have then go from there. Be cool if you had a Dino pick the motor from what you have or mix together on what you have. Cool idea to do. You want a good all around town and road car you can bring to the track. I am looking forward to this! 318 is a killer motor. I hate to tell you this but I had a 318 that got 20 to 24 mpg,in a duster, with highway gear, but it was stick . Had a .510 cam in it and I really wish I could find the card for it cause it ran good! Sorry I know it sounds like a story but I don’t think you will have a problem getting your goals. I do think you will have to get rid of the stock camshaft to get what you want.
Thanks for the input ! I've seen 318's get as much as 26 mpg in a Aspen with the OD transmission. But, it was in stock form and nowhere near a 13.99 car.
Yeah this is true. That’s why I think the camshaft is going to be key in this hole thing. You know about heads and intake mopar has and you have worked on them. So I think you already have a camshaft setup in mind already. You know the TQ output of the camshaft which will be key in this thing. That’s why you are looking at the mag motor. I still think you should try with the motor that’s in it and then go from there. I know it cost money but to put it on a Dino give us a side by side info on the setups of each motor. I also know that would be crazy to do this cause of cost time and so on but is also the way to shut up the so called armchair pros up. I know that’s not your goal but I see some of these guys that just really piss me off (sorry) and fact are Proof. I also know that each motor is not the same. But all of what I have to say does not matter you have a cool goal to go for and I don’t think you will have to work to hard to get it. I still think it will be a fun project to watch from my armchair!!! LOL!!! Good luck and thank you for your time.
@@richardmoerke9329 I think the 13.99 will be the big challenge because of the other goals that have been set and the fact that it won't be an exotic build with turbo or overdrive.
I think headers are a must, I got 22 mpg in my old 1988 fifth ave 318 2 barrel with headers, I hope someday I can get one of those fancy 5 speed manual swaps and see how good it will be, I love my torque flights but they leave me wanting higher gears.
73+ A-body 7.25/8.25 rear is = to 1968-72 8.75 width. I hate the track width soo bad, I install 1.5" spacer adapters on the Rear till I upgrade the differential.
btw, my duster topped out at around 75mph wth those 3.73 gears on 265/50-14 tires and would bind the shift rods everytime i wasn't paying attention... but it made me feel like homer simpson listening to steve miller in his 70 roadrunner every time i drove it, probably gave me 20 mpg cruising at around 50mph... anything faster would feel like triple digits with that setup
I agree. I’ve done the same thing. Sold it and miss it. Driving 69 Charger now, 3:54s 5 speed for cruisin, only trouble is the monster532. Oh well I guess I’ll build another one.😂😂
I know that you can make 20 MPG with a 2.94 gear and a 318. It would be fantastic is you could also run a 13,99 or better. This is what I would like to do with our 72 Plymouth Scamp. We will all be waiting for the journey. It will be fun.
I assume its a V-8. Probably a small block. My friends 73' 318 duster runs low 13's in the 1/4 mile with a 391 rear. But otherwise it's all stock and original. I'd be surprised if that 74' cant run a 14 second 1/4 mile already. and l seriously doubt you'll ever see 20 miles to a gal with that motor. Not even with fuel injection. But l also think you're very smart. I hope you prove me wrong. Keep us posted, and good luck.
Though not impossible, the mpg and e.t. requirements will be pretty difficult. I never see or hear of anyone using the 999 (?) transmission with the lower ratio 1st and 2nd gear. Seem to me that the lower ratios would help in both e.t. and mpg. At first I thought the magnum motor would be the best choice, but im not sure. Yes you want higher compression and a roller for this goal. Are the valve sizes and heads too free flowing to reach the 20 mpg goal?
Good point on the 999. You are also correct that this won't be easy. Magnum heads have a narrow intake port which makes velocity. Thanks for watching !!
The cam isn't the weak point, it's that the smog engines are choked. Intake and exhaust is 90% of the power problem. The B-body rear is required to take the slant-6 grandma look out of it.
Checking off ALL the things on your list will sure be a challenge. Is a 904 better/preferred over 727? I can do 20 mpg hwy in my RC 318 2bbl 727, but fast is not an option.
Why would you want a wider rear end? Just add wider wheels to even the width of the front wheels. Or maybe move the springs inboard, add a narrower rear end, put some wide wheels with less backspace and have that pro stock look. The wide rear body of the Duster makes it look awesome.
Current rear end is the factory 7.25. Time for something beefier. I don't think I'll need to relocate the springs or mini tub. B-body rear end and a wider tire should fill it out and look nice. Actually, it will have the same stance as my '76 Duster, which has a B-body rear end. Thanks for watching !!
I like this Challenge! Sounds like some great goals that wont break the bank. I agree, I think the Magnum 318 is the way to go. Do you know if Magnum exhaust manifolds will fit in a A-Body? I believe they flow better than stock A-Body exhaust manifolds and they would still fall into the rules of your challenge.
Thank You! Yes, the magnum manifolds do outflow what I have and they will fit.... but .... The head pipes, and weight, and tight fitment I'm not sure I'll go that route, at least to start.
Now I'm a big A/C fan when it's hot and humid.... But I like my classics open and bare under the hood !!!. Maybe.... maybe sometime I'll put an A/C in one of them.... LOL.. Thanks for watching !!!
I believe a Thermoquad is going to be your best choice for induction it has the best of both worlds low end torque and milage and more than enough total air flow for your needs. Careful attention to the exhaust system is also going be paramount to your goals along with careful cam selection but the real key here to meeting the goals you've set is static compression ratio you'll need 9.3 to 1 or a little more to make the kind of torque it needs to achieve your goals. If you can achieve a tight quench area number without breaking your budget will pay you dividends in the end. The tight clearance (say .040 or slightly less) will help reduce the chance of detonation because it reintroduces the fuel mixture back into the combustion chamber increasing flame propagation and efficient combustion. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this project of yours performs and I really hope you're completely successful! Best of luck young man
I would say you are close. I have a 69 skylark with 2.93s ?. Motor is a 350 and has mild cam and headers with turbo 350 trans. It gets 16,17 miles to the gallon. Don't know about the 1/4 mile times, never did it w/this one.
Hey mate luv the channel, I’m new to hot rodding. I just got my 360 La freshly built. It has j heads, 30 bore, new pistons, stock crank, 214/224 @ 50 cam, 112 LSA, air gap manifold, 600 quickfuel vac sec carburettor. I’m dying to put it in the car. How do you think this engine will perform and sound? Thanks mate 🇦🇺
@@frigglebiscuit7484 cheers mate, the lift on the cam card says. Valve lift INT/EXH 0.444/0.465 Camshaft lift is INT/EXH 0.295/0.310. How does this sound? From what I’ve researched my cam is pretty small lol.
I like this build! Great idea! I want to do the same as you with my 318 challenger. The only difference is I might put headers on. Good goal to try and reach.
Not knowing what rear it's got, I would just put different rims to fit wider tires. Engine wise the magnum is better for everything. To me it doesnt matter the race times as long as it runs good on the street/highway. Redo all the interior and slosh that por-15 on all the pans and inner wheel houses.
The 318 2brl in my ‘68 Satellite got close to 20mpg with an open 2.94. And cruised all day long. So I did the right thing and put in a 3.73 suregrip, bought a ‘68 440, but decided to build a 451 Stroker….wait what were you doing???😅 Just kidding, you made a great point and I love this plan. Do you already have a 65-67 8 3/4 Housing? I have one and have an open 2.94. I’m in Mn.
Ha ! I do have a housing, though it's not the cleanest one around I think it's useable. I have a good 2.94 open that I was running in the '76 Duster for a short spell. BTW, I love '68 satellites. One of my favorites for sure !!!!
You named the very thing I hated about my Duster. I LOVE your plan for your Duster. Uncle Tony's Garage did something like that for a early 70's Dart Swinger. Fun videos and I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. When I tell people I like my 2 barrel 318 in my '68 Fury VIP just the way it is because I can do the relaxed cruising at 70 and get 18 mpg. Not all cars have to be hot rods. Hot rods are fun, but it's nice to have a solid cruiser.
I agree with you, spot on !!! Yes, UTG did do a daily, but he used a 360 and I think by his Gtech he ran 15.2's with it. I have to demand much more from my 318. Thanks for watching !
It's totally doable, You have the larger exhaust manifolds pre-magnum. You going to need a spread board but you already knew that. Tune to spread bore for 14 to 15 to 1 on the primaries 13 on the secondaries. I only see one drawback and it's a big one. You need a zero deck to do this and more shallow of a top ring on your piston. And then there's your exhaust manifolds. Just my 2¢ and two cents ain't worth much these days
I have two 1974 Plymouth Dusters one out of 318 the other had a 318 and then I had a 71 duster with a 340 four-barrel high rise intake manifold dual exhaust I ran the balls off of them cars Days Inn best cars I ever owned
My 65 dart had 2.92 gears 904 automatic and a 225 slant6 with one barrel carb. the only thing I modified was upgrading to a walker exhaust flang with a bigger port and a high flow single exhaust pipe . I used a Mr. gasket 10" chrome air filter with an K & N E-1100 filter and I also gasket matched the ports on the head, intake and exhaust manifold and close as possible factory size tires for my 14" rims . I was getting close to 25 on the highway/ innerstate = 65 /70 MPH . I also installed an RCI 16 GAL fuel cell in the trunk. O f course it might have had a little to do with gas prices at that time ? I also made sure the tires where aired up properly and the points set and timing as well . you should be able to pull off those number give or take . Will be interesting to see what your duster does 😎👍🏁
This is going to be a interesting build! I had a 66 B-Body 8.75 in a 68 barracuda and I didn't like it much, I had to run wheels with a 4 inch back space but the Duster is a little wider in the quarters. If it were me I'd fill up that extra space with wide rims and tires! But I see your point, a B-Body rear end will be much cheaper and you can still use original ralley wheels! I will be glued to this build, going to be fun! Thanks for sharing!
Sure appreciate you watching !!! I thought of just rims, but the 7.25 probably needs to be upgraded ! I agree, this should be fun !! Thanks again, friend !
Also to add to my first comment, I have a 70 Duster with a built 360 (stock Mag short block), 904 with 2600-stall converter and a B-body 8 3/4" with 2.94 gears. It is very nice to drive on the freeway and gets around 18 mpg cruising at 80 mph; could probably do better if I drove slower lol
Win lose or draw I'm super interested in what happens with this. I have a 67 Barracuda 318 with an open 2.94 and a 904 I'm working on. I have another 77 318 with a burnt valve that I'm contemplating doing a budget build on and sticking in it for the time being until I can finish all the other stuff the car needs. I excited to see your results as this is my first mopar and there is a learning curve and your videos are super helpful. I'm evernite on FABO.
Great goals, I think it's very doable. Putting a low gear set in that 904 would be a huge help along with a converter that stalls around 2500 RPM. And I definitely vote for the 5.2 Magnum I think that's the best starting point for the reasons you mentioned in the video. Mild regrind roller cam might be a good idea and try to find some Magnum exhaust manifolds for it.
I like your plans I have a lowered 73 d100 with a slant that I just put 2.94's in after driving it for awhile I think I'm going to swap to 2.76's. I know alot of people who have built cars that just sit in storage because they are to miserable to drive! Also go with the magnum!
Your not gonna get 13.9 dude give up on that U want comfort you best settle for 14s maybe 15 with that gear ratio 🤣sounds like a good build I notice the rear end aswell nothing wrong with a 318 personally I'd go a standard 440 with a 6pack carb set up with a auto box and I'd go bit higher with the rear gear ratio I like cruzn aswell if U really want to gas mileage U gonna need injection bro but you got a V8 U shouldn't be thinking gas mileage if U want a comfy car that gets good mileage maybe a Prius is more your style 🤣I just think it's kinda stupid to hope for a high 13 from a 318 with that gear ratio and on top of that you want good gas mileage first thing on your list should be a new paint job it really bugs me when anyone with a V8 classic old school ride starts bitchn bout gas mileage 🤣and it's America gas is kinda cheap if U take to mind the price other western country's pay in Australia it's like 2dollars a litre and you won't see V8 owners bitchn bout mileage to drive a V8 means blocking out mileage 🤣dam I love dusters and yeh a 318 is underated bore it out put in some good pistons a big cam a big Holley carb and it's as good or even better then larger small blocks I think U gonna need to add abit of extra power if U want 13.9 just abit and go injection
hi nice color on the car the seats you can do yourself if someone elsedoes them for you it will cost maybe $3500.00 .there is vid that a guy did himself.
First I’d like to say .. you sound much better in your voice N it looks an sounds like your strength has improved .. I hope your wife an daughter an family are improving like that too … an then this video is a great challenge an im excited to watch this project one together an I’m betting an routing that you will meet your goals or pretty darn close to it .. I think it be a great cruising set up !! I’m looking forward to what’s coming !! 👍👍
Thank you so much!! Yes, we do feel better and getting stronger by the day. This project will be interesting, and in my opinion, getting the 13.99 will be the tough part.
i think you can get damn close or hit it. Timing and vacuum advance with a proper sized carb "not too large" really woke my W100 up. im shocked how shitty it ran at first. when i knew almost nothing about mopars or tuning.
What drew me to your channel was wanting to see 318s be stretched to their full potential. I grew up in a mopar household where if it wasn't 440 or hemi, it wasn't worth having and 318s were talked down upon. I mean, it's a cool idea and all, but it's not what I really came for. Most channels that mess with mopar small block stuff only seem to mess with 340s, 360s, or 408s. Of course, I don't mean any offense, it's your car, and you should do as you please with it. Just sharing my .02¢
Thanks for watching ! 318's can be stroked, or be built to handle boost/supercharger, or even a nice shot of NOS. In todays world of aftermarket heads, and cams that can make power to 8500 rpm's, even in "318" form with no power adders, these engines with gearing and the RIGHT converter can be made into real screamers !!! But the money to build, and the money for the safety equipment to make passes at the track, just make it a waste for me as we drive our cars, many times through several states. Anyone that thinks small cube motors can't make big power are stuck in 1978 and don't go to the track. 2021 is a whole new ball game!
@@318willrun Well, I ran into your channel a few months ago, and I'm pretty sure I've watched nearly every video you've posted on squeezing out power from 318s, and it's been enjoyable. I'm building a first generation dakota single cab short bed that has a 318 (LA) swapped into it, and I've been taking notes as I've been watching the videos. I've been torn on the idea of yanking the 318, and swapping to a 360 (LA or magnum) but the prices of them are just through the roof around here it seems. So the 318 content has been nice to watch and get ideas on how to make my 318 scream if all else fails.
@@ecrwarren I had an early 318 magnum 4x4 dakota. I tried several different mufflers on that single exaust pipe, the best was none. then one day I ordered aftermarket shorty headers and put them on and was even better, even the mileage went up to around 18 mpg, that was good back then. that was a fast little truck, then the family grew..
@@rogerdodger6888 currently, mine has an LA 318, offenhauser 4 barrel intake, 600 cfm edelbrock, shorty headers and an msd box. I'm planning on eventually magnum swapping it, but I might throw a cam into the 318 first.
My 86 5th Ave gets about 23mpg. Driving mostly highway with small amounts of in town driving. Everything is stock except the lean burn removed. Also took the original y pipe off. To get rid of the mini cats. Egr blocked off. Using original intake. I have a Carter bbd on it now. But I've also used a Holley 2280. Both do about the same. I don't mind using 2 barrels carbs for daily drivers. I have a Newport with a 400 2 barrel. And it's actually got decent power. Hate that it's near impossible to tune the bbd and Holley 2280. The Holley 2280 uses a smaller size of main jet than any other carb. And no one has them any more. And the bbd, no one really has metering rods... I just found out about this Holley 4412. It's a small 2 barrel that is used for racing. And uses all the available Holley parts. I'm curious about trying one. I wish there was more aftermarket support for people who want to stick with a 2 barrel but want a little better performance. I'm sure you will not even have a 2 barrel cross your mind. But just was thinking how I'd like to see how those Holley 4412 work.
I'm just tickled to see you folks on the other side of that evil kung flu. Everything else is gravy from there - and I'll be watching as always. - Ed on the Ridge
Yup, It’s yours. Cut it up, Build it Your way. and don’t let anyone say you did it wrong. It’s yours. Make it what you want it. They told the waterboy - “You Can Do It!”
We love your videos, really looking to get your camshaft recommendation for our budget build. What is the best way to get in contact with you? Thank you.
I used to own a 73' Duster with a V-8. I purchased from my boss when I worked at a Burger King. He put a nice set of rubber on it on chrome American Racing Rims. I wish I kept that car. I sold it for cheap cause I was going into military service.
Very fun. My 69 cuda was that but I don’t think you can get-to a high 13 just because your 60 foot time won’t let you. But you seem to get these things right so it will be a fun adventure. Good luck I wish I could be around to get in your way lol
I always noticed that back when those cars were plentiful on the roads! I figure the car is asking for some mag wheels and larger tires on the rear! Did the Aspen/Volares use that same axle housing, or do their quarter panels not stick out as far? Who is the one misguided fool who thumbs-downed this video??!! Glad you're not averse to an aftermarket intake manifold. I put a Performer RPM on the stock single exhaust 289/302 in my 1968 Cougar, in place of the factory intake from an '85 Mustang 5.0, and it was a nice gain. Guy at the speed shop tried to sell me the Performer, but I insisted on the RPM. I'd love to see how the two Edelbrocks measured up against each other. I always kind of wondered if they were the same, other than the EGR passages on the Performer...
I had a 5.0 Mustang that was pretty close to your goals. 22 mpg 14.30s, cruised freeway easily at 70 mph everyday. I had couple small advantages like EFI and overdrive, but I think you can totally do it.
My 76 dart sport will be undergoing some changes. Had it 30 years ago, and recovered it about 3 years ago. Poor old car is rough. Never did like the roller skate stance.
I had a 74 Gold Duster B5 blue with white stripes and vinyl half-roof just like your's. I LOVED THAT CAR. Bought it new in November of 73 and still hate that I traded it in a few years later. I'd LOVE to find one today.
Years ago, I put a rear from an '85 Cougar in my '83 Mustang just to go from 3.08 to 3.73 gears....more out of budget necessity at the time. It allows room to put wider tires in also.....if you can afford that. Everything with a car hobby costs time and $$$. If your day job is 65 hours a week in 5 days like mine, you lose interest pretty quickly in scouring junkyards. I still have the Mustang. The only reason is, the engine was from my deceased bro's '83 Mercury Capri RS. I rebuilt the engine on a pauper's budget at the time (1995)...dropped it in a $500 Mustang body, and proceeded to do much of nothing with it.....still sitting here....lol. I like watching these channels that do the things I don't have time for. Maybe that's why I don't have time? LOL
Cool story! Glad you still have the 'stang! I'm still working 50+ hrs a week ! Also, duties in our church. So yes, I'm busy, but I just pick at it all as time permits. Thanks for watching !
Haha- I guessed EXACTLY what you were gonna say that you hated about Duster/Dart Sports. Actually, the front to rear track width difference was only on the disc brake equipped cars but then again who wants drum brakes aside from U.T.. I actually considered the narrow rear track as a blessing to put offset wheels & wide tires on my Dusters even though my brother and I both put B-body 8-3/4 rears in our cars. I used 4.56 gears w/727 and my brother used 3.55 gears and low 1st gear 904. We weren't real concerned with fuel mileage back then. Good luck. I like watching you.
Thank You ! Yes, deep dish rims in the back can fill the back wheel wells out nice !! In my case, I think it's time to rid the car of the 7.25 rear end !
Last comment i promise! Before i went with the 8.8 diff modification i considered using stock width as it's only like 2.5-3" wider, but saw others on the internet with that swap and dif not like the súper wide track look... the nail onnthe coffin was a 70 duster i Saw at a car show locally with a B body rear diff and late 90s Mustang Bullitt Style wheels and absolutely looked ghastly Even though the tires were probably around 8" wide all around... I think you're right on the money with the mods, but You should probably use the rear end You have even if it's a 8.25" or shorten an abundant 8.8 Explorer diff, only needing one extra short side axle on the drivers side and shorten the tube as needed... I think You can easily find one with 3.08 gears ir Even swap 2.76s out of a crown Vic... Discs ir drums, your call... I had drums on mine to use 14" mags
It's cool, keep the comments coming! Many have gone with the 8.8 with great success! It's a strong rear end as well! I just don't think the 7.25 will keep up with continue pounding, although it's done well. I like the 8.75 because of the simplicity of choosing gears. I mean, a fella could pull the 2.94's and throw in 4.30's in a hour just for a night at the drag strip. Not that I would, but i could.
i swapped a narrowed 8.8 explorer rear to replace the grenaded dana 30 on my mex spec 76 duster wich was actually 1/4" narrower than stock and slapped a set of 10" slotted mags and it looked fantastic... oh i also replaced that ugly rear bumper with a 71 unit... it absloutely changed the look and vibe on my slant six, three on the tree with a loud sound system as my "tweaker look" duster to offset my clean 72 charger... consider just swapping over to widened rallyes or something like that.. keep up the good work! btw i was running a 3.73 trac lok to help withthe smokey burnouts on that stock 225
Glad you brought up the bumper ! Our '74 is unique in the fact that the front bumper is mounted like a '73 (No shock absorbers). But the rear is the impact bumper, and that's how it came from the factory ! I agree, I don't like the impact bumpers on how they stick out ! Thanks for watching !
This is almost exactly what I wish to do with my 75 Scamp aside from the Magnum engine. I am not sure if a Bbody rear will fit my car due to the different quarters. Thinking Abody 8 1/4 with 2.94 gears and try to offset the rear track with aftermarket Magnum wheels. We'll see.
You can do this without spending much money. I have an ex-higway patrol Aspen with a 360 Lean Burn. I get 17+ MPG city and it's definitely great city or freeway but it's a mid 15 second car. It wouldn't take much to get better drag times, but I don't really place a priority on that. Your goals are very reasonable. I am surprised something so old can get 17 city with only 3 gears and zero technology other than the Lean Burn. A lot of SUV's with 6 or more gears and injection can barely pull 15 MPG city with all of the latest technology, so why the huge car payments?
Neat! Neat! Neat! I love the goals of your plan and the conservative rules. I don’t have any advice really, but I do have questions… I don’t remember, but is there already a low gear 904 in it now? If not, is that part of your plan? I guess the Magnum is the best choice because of it’s cylinder heads, so would you use a Speedmaster intake with it’s dual bolt pattern? IIRC you already have 360 exhaust manifolds on the car now, are the Magnum manifolds possibly ‘better’? Is your 13.99 goal with drag radials or regular street tires? Really looking forward to this next phase of the Duster!
Great stuff !! The tranny does not have the low gear set, but it's a possibility. Speedmaster intake could be the intake we start with, however, I may want to go with a LA intake - and maybe a TQ/cast intake! Magnum manifolds do flow a little better, but they are somewhat of a pain and the head pipes. Hopefully just street tires. Should be fun !!! Thanks for watching !!
I just found your channel…awesome! I recently picked up a 73 Swinger with 20k 318 crate motor w/904, the goals for your Duster mimic mine for the most part. Looking for a nice everyday cruiser.
Never really cared for the Duster. I am more a straight line boxy cars ie. 68,69,70 RoadRunner, Dart and Dart swingers. Duster and every mopar 71 and later had too many curves and bows, but that’s just me.
'68-70 B-bodies are my favorite. My wallet disagrees. I like all, some I like more. Personally, a Duster looks best on a drag way, even more than a '68 GTX which I like a lot more than a Duster on the street. Thanks for watching!
Glad to see you are feeling better, I’m putting a A500 overdrive transmission in my Dart behind the 318 so I can maybe run the power tour next year. This will get the gear ratio down for the cruise. I’m also getting to a 9.25 rear end , borrowing in with 8.75 ends and 30 splines
True story… When I was 11, my dad bought a ‘73 Duster brand new, and when my mom was driving it and he was following behind her in our other car, he said something must be wrong with it because the rear tire doesn’t line up with the front. My older brother looked at it and said “no dad, nothing wrong, that’s just how they are.” lol
That's a awesome goal just do it I want to see this progress awesome video keep on making awesome videos I love all your videos very on POINT videos brother ALOHA my friend
Thanks for the thoughts! I think it's time to rid the car of the 7.25 rear axle. The A-body 8.75's are so expensive. The B-body rear will widen it out some. Haven't settled on a carb for sure yet.
love it . I have loads of ideas .
Thanks !! Feel free to share ! I will probably start with mostly what I have, and see how close the package comes to the goals. But as always, changes are always made !!!
I’m guessing a 13.40! You always surprise me with those magnums. Good luck and look forward to the build!
Wow ! Thanks for the vote of confidence, but I thought I was stretching it a bit at 13.99 with 2.94's and no headers and the 318 ! We'll know - - eventually ! LOL Thanks for watching!!
This is the kind of builds I love to watch. Looking forward to see it progress
Thanks, should be fun !!
Very realistic goal. My 73 duster I ran 3.23s in the 8 3/4 and a 4 speed with a mild 318 and got 20 mpg and ran a 14.2 in the quarter. Mopower to ya!
Nice !
OK-
5.2 Magnum- There's 340 exhaust manifold$$.
The lower factory gearset- 2.74/1.54/1:1 vs 2.45/1.45/1:1 pre-80's
No floorpan mods required.
Just some ideas- good luck!
I wish you lived across the street from me. You'd need a watchdog to keep me from bothering you.
Great points !!! I've already been thinking of drilling the heads to accept the LA intakes. Thanks for chiming in !!!!
@@dantupper1784 I agree, the M1 dual plane for the magnum was a sweet intake
that would be nice to see bro, am waiting for the video
We'll give updates over the winter ! thanks for watching !
That blue interior is so nice and different (70's.)
It is ! thanks for watching!
Following. Sounds fun! I am on a similar mission with my Challenger. Comfort, drivability, and mileage. I'm going to cheat a little with a 518. But, I'm running a healthy 383. So I'm going to need O/D to achieve the goals.
Thanks! Sounds like you have a fun project as well!
Badass, you outta do a pov video of you cruising around in that car. That is a nice 74 and it sounds great 👍
Well if it isn't none other than our Princess Valiant !!! Thanks for watching !!!!!
I agree throwing money at a car is easy mode....asking what you have just asked of yours is fun and interesting and not easy. Gonna be cool to watch!
Should get close anyways. Thanks for watching !
Really!!!
You are right, headers would offer more mpg plus performance. We'll see if we can do it without them. Thanks for watching !
👍 Sounds like you enjoyed it, and that's really the purpose !
I like it !!
Thank You !
I agree. I’ve done the same thing. Sold it and miss it. Driving 69 Charger now, 3:54s 5 speed for cruisin, only trouble is the monster532. Oh well I guess I’ll build another one.😂😂
'69 Charger 👍
I know that you can make 20 MPG with a 2.94 gear and a 318. It would be fantastic is you could also run a 13,99 or better. This is what I would like to do with our 72 Plymouth Scamp. We will all be waiting for the journey. It will be fun.
Thank you ! Yes, 13.99 will be a tough get for the build, but we are going to try. Should be fun !!!
👍💪
I need to run my 70 Swinger to see how it performs. I get 19 with my 318-2 barrel, 3.23 gear and 255-60 15's. A Magnum would be a good bet.
Hey TMM ! I agree, you need to run it !!!! Thanks for watching !
It was a factory slant 6 car, now has a 318. It is the low dollar 318 project, has summit cam, home ported heads, and ran high 14's.
5 speed manual....done 👍
I won't argue that ! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching !!
freeer flowing valves and heads means better mpg.
The cam isn't the weak point, it's that the smog engines are choked. Intake and exhaust is 90% of the power problem. The B-body rear is required to take the slant-6 grandma look out of it.
Slant six grandma look.... LOL !!!! Exactly what the car came with, the /6 !!
Checking off ALL the things on your list will sure be a challenge. Is a 904 better/preferred over 727? I can do 20 mpg hwy in my RC 318 2bbl 727, but fast is not an option.
It will be a challenge ! 904's are lighter in weight and lighter in rotating assembly than a 727. Thanks for watching !
Thank You! Yes, the magnum manifolds do outflow what I have and they will fit.... but .... The head pipes, and weight, and tight fitment I'm not sure I'll go that route, at least to start.
drivers side dont fit sadly.
Add A/C for max comfort. 13.99 with AC on and 13.39 with AC off. Or not lol.
Best of luck young man
Thanks for watching ! The TQ is on my mind for sure.... My experience with them has been tremendous performance and excellent fuel mileage !!!
I would say you are close. I have a 69 skylark with 2.93s ?. Motor is a 350 and has mild cam and headers with turbo 350 trans. It gets 16,17 miles to the gallon. Don't know about the 1/4 mile times, never did it w/this one.
Sounds like you have a nice ride ! Thanks for watching !
Should be a quick, stout, runner !! Thanks for watching !
whats your lift? not hard to make 400hp with a decent built 360.
@@frigglebiscuit7484 cheers mate, the lift on the cam card says. Valve lift INT/EXH 0.444/0.465
Camshaft lift is INT/EXH 0.295/0.310.
How does this sound? From what I’ve researched my cam is pretty small lol.
I like this build! Great idea! I want to do the same as you with my 318 challenger. The only difference is I might put headers on. Good goal to try and reach.
Thanks! Headers will help for sure if you go with them !!!!
I like the plans. look forward to seeing it come together.
Thanks, should be fun !
Not knowing what rear it's got, I would just put different rims to fit wider tires. Engine wise the magnum is better for everything. To me it doesnt matter the race times as long as it runs good on the street/highway. Redo all the interior and slosh that por-15 on all the pans and inner wheel houses.
Thanks for watching! It's a 7.25 in it now, and I believe 2.76 gears. Yes, we plan on por-15 on the floors before new carpet !
@@318willrun yup put the 8.75
The 318 2brl in my ‘68 Satellite got close to 20mpg with an open 2.94.
It is a waste to change out the rear axle. Just get wide tires and different offset. That fixes the issues.
I wanted a little more strength back there, plus a much easier way to swap gears! Thanks!
Thanks for the input!
Sounds like a good plan!
We think so too ! Thanks for watching !
I have two 1974 Plymouth Dusters one out of 318 the other had a 318 and then I had a 71 duster with a 340 four-barrel high rise intake manifold dual exhaust I ran the balls off of them cars Days Inn best cars I ever owned
They are fun for sure
Really like what you are doing here.
Appreciate it !!!
I’m just the opposite. I love it because it can hold a wide wheel and tire combination.
I think we are the same.... I love it because it can hold a wide wheel and tire too !!!! And that's what we gave it !!
My 65 dart had 2.92 gears 904 automatic and a 225 slant6 with one barrel carb. the only thing I modified was upgrading to a walker exhaust flang with a bigger port and a high flow single exhaust pipe . I used a Mr. gasket 10" chrome air filter with an
K & N E-1100 filter and I also gasket matched the ports on the head, intake and exhaust manifold and close as possible factory size tires for my 14" rims . Will be interesting to see what your duster does 😎👍🏁
Good stuff !! Should be fun to see where we end up !!
That's awesome !!!
Glad you are here !! Sounds like you have a fun project !! This should be a fun journey ! Thanks for watching !
Great points !!! Thank you !
I like your plans I have a lowered 73 d100 with a slant that I just put 2.94's in after driving it for awhile I think I'm going to swap to 2.76's. I know alot of people who have built cars that just sit in storage because they are to miserable to drive! Also go with the magnum!
I agree ! Steep gears and high stalls keep the cars in the garage ! Thanks for watching !
A wide rear end, and more enjoyable to look at.
No truer words were spoken 👍👍😂
i do remember guys runnin 50 series on the rear and air shocks. looked like shortened rear end.
I had n-50 14s back in the day, with ET slots and air shocks. That was the look back then
UTG Sent me here to show some love brothermann
Welcome !
So the 318 content has been nice to watch and get ideas on how to make my 318 scream if all else fails.
same. 318s are cooool. when i bought my 93 ram and saw how the 5.2 magnum ran, i was hooked.
Great video, Intellitronix makes a direct fit LED gauge cluster for this vehicle
Turbo. Or school bus blower
Turbo would make it very easy - except my goal wouldn't be 13.99 for performance. It would be a smidge quicker... LOL Thanks for watching !
The factory 2 bbls make excellent drivers, and they can offer plenty of low end snap!
I'm just tickled to see you folks on the other side of that evil kung flu.
Everything else is gravy from there - and I'll be watching as always.
- Ed on the Ridge
We appreciate it, feeling stronger every day !!! Thanks for watching !

We love your videos, really looking to get your camshaft recommendation for our budget build. What is the best way to get in contact with you? Thank you.
Thanks, you can email me at 318willrun@gmail.com or just post a question on a video. I work a lot so be somewhat patient
I used to own a 73' Duster with a V-8. I purchased from my boss when I worked at a Burger King. He put a nice set of rubber on it on chrome American Racing Rims. I wish I kept that car. I sold it for cheap cause I was going into military service.
Thanks for watching!
This guy is an uber nerd.
Put a low gear set in the 904 from a&a transmission.
or just use a 999
A low gear set would help for sure !!
Good challenge.
Build a fun a practical car.
I like it.
Thank you 🤗
My mother had the same car in an "interesting" shade of green. She really enjoyed it.
Nice !! Thanks for watching!
Very fun. My 69 cuda was that but I don’t think you can get-to a high 13 just because your 60 foot time won’t let you. But you seem to get these things right so it will be a fun adventure. Good luck I wish I could be around to get in your way lol
You are correct, the toughest part will be getting the 13.99. We may not get it. Thanks for watching !!!
999 first gear will fix that 60 foot.
I believe it can be done.
We're hoping ! Thanks for watching !
It needs a HEMI ! 🤭
My duster has 323 gears and a 5 speed= ultimate cruisin
I agree !!!

Yah, my Dakota is 3.23 and 5 speed. 70-75 cruise is real nice and sometimes, on level road, with just a little tailwind, hits 20 mpg.
Getter done
Getter done
I love the thought of this! It's similar to what I'm doing with my Duster. Though I have a 4.10 gear and an A-500 transmission!
OD and 4.10's is a good way to go !!! Thanks for watching !
Go for it! I'll clone mine after it.
Thanks!
I had a 5.0 Mustang that was pretty close to your goals.
22 mpg 14.30s, cruised freeway easily at 70 mph everyday.
I had couple small advantages like EFI and overdrive, but I think you can totally do it.
Nice ! Thanks for watching!
Good video brotha!
Thanks!
I'd love to see you and ""gas taps"" mr Jones race
Mr. Jones has a power adder - Turbo !!! I'd be in a world of trouble ! Shoot, I'd race him anyways !!! I bet I'd at least come in 2nd place !
@@318willrun build another drag truck with a power adder
My 76 dart sport will be undergoing some changes. Had it 30 years ago, and recovered it about 3 years ago.
Poor old car is rough. Never did like the roller skate stance.
Sounds like a cool project ! Thanks for watching !
I had a 74 Gold Duster B5 blue with white stripes and vinyl half-roof just like your's. I LOVED THAT CAR. Bought it new in November of 73 and still hate that I traded it in a few years later. I'd LOVE to find one today.
Very Cool !
Zero deck stock dished piston magnum 5.2 Port the cylinder heads with velocity in mind. LIGHTEN EVERYTHING you can on the car.
Good stuff !!! Thanks for watching !
We'll see.
Sounds like a fun project !! Thanks for watching !
A lot of SUV's with 6 or more gears and injection can barely pull 15 MPG city with all of the latest technology, so why the huge car payments?
ex-highway patrol Aspen with a 360 ! I love it ! thanks for watching
Neat! Neat! Neat! I love the goals of your plan and the conservative rules. I don’t have any advice really, but I do have questions…
I don’t remember, but is there already a low gear 904 in it now?
WELCOME !!! Sounds like you have a nice car ! Thanks for watching !
A500 is a great choice !!! Thanks for watching !
Your Dad was right.... there was something "wrong". They should have never left the factory like this !!!! Ha !!!
I would change the rear gear to a 356 and a 2,300 stall and a gear vendors overdrive bet that makes a huge difference
Gear vendor OD would make it much easier, unfortunately we aren't going to spend the Ca$h for that feature. Thanks for watching !
That's a awesome goal just do it I want to see this progress awesome video keep on making awesome videos I love all your videos very on POINT videos brother ALOHA my friend
Thanks so much!!
Time to remove some excess weight, leave the axle and sort out the back spacing of the wheels, twenty mpg holley 600cfm vacuum secondary I reckon.
Thanks for the thoughts! I think it's time to rid the car of the 7.25 rear axle. The A-body 8.75's are so expensive. The B-body rear will widen it out some. Haven't settled on a carb for sure yet.
I like what you are doing, I’m going a little different, building a 9.25 rear end with 8.75 axle end.
Thanks ! Good luck with your build !!
Looking forward to this build. Good luck and keep the videos coming.
Appreciate it !!!
Hey wouldn’t wider rear rims take up the slack? Great car and channel my friend
Yes, rims could fix the width issue. However, the 7.25 rear end should be replaced by something more stout. Thanks for watching !
