I was in the audience that afternoon and while I knew who Phish was, I didn't know their music. It was electrifying. This was a rare Friday taping (most weeks Letterman taped both Thursday's and Friday's shows on Thursday afternoon) so the concert was indeed that night -- about two hours after the taping was done. As soon as I left the theater, I looked for a cab, but was so excited, I ended up walking the 20 blocks down to Madison Square Garden.😂I found a ticket from a scalper who charged $40 (about $20 over cost), but needless to say, it was worth it. That was my first show, Dec. 30, 1994. And nearly 30 years later, Phish is still playing concerts -- and I'm still going to them.🤗🤩🤗🤩🤗
As a kid growing up in Vermont in the 80s, we used to go see Phish when they were still playing gymnasiums and people's back yards. Loved it when they exploded in the 90s. I still try and see them once a year or so. Good times!
I lived in Burlington in 1987 and saw them a bunch at Nectars and jammed acoustics with them at an after party once. Still not keen on their lyrics, but great band!
Watched this live with some friends. It was so cool to see them get some recognition on national TV. Then we headed in to Boston to next night to see the infamous hot dog NYE show at the old Boston Garden. Great memories.
This in fact was a pivotal day in the history of phish. First network tv exposure and first sold out show at MSG. Consequently I had 3rd page side rage side at that show. Truly life changing experience. Love phish
@@elguapo6750 I saw them in '89 at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY while in college. Great show but I haven't seen them since. Just kinda left it at that. Much respect for the band!

There's a British talk show where Nirvana played "Territorial Pissings," after the announcer claimed they were going to play one of their hits. I've got to find a clip with that.
i wouldnt consider it "trolling". chalkdust was on picture of nectar which came out a couple years prior. and it was a live favourite. dave didnt say this is one from the new album...... all he said was , they have a new album out now, hoist.
Thank you so much for posting this! Phish always had some of their best TV appearances on Letterman, and you could always tell Dave loved having them on. It would be incredible if you could eventually post their other appearances: 7/13/1995 (Julius) 3/5/1997 (Character Zero) 10/27/1998 (Birds of a Feather) 5/16/2000 (Heavy Things) 12/19/2002 (All of These Dreams) 6/21/2004 (Scents and Subtle Sounds + the rest of their unaired show on the Marquee outside)
When this aired I waited and then shouted with exuberance “see how they get to the peak of a jam in such short time!” Their mastery was noted then and still is. Best damn band out there.
Saw PHISH a bunch during this time period, always on point and nailing each song they played. Trey, Mike, Page and John, the Boys From UVM, from Burlington to the World. Thanks for posting, VERY HIGH QUALITY!!!
So great ! I love the cue that Page gives Paul here to get the organ walk up on the chorus. Paul nails all the organ parts. Also this video claimed it was a 4:20 video when I saw it in my feed.
I’m not a jaded vet. I love all eras of Phish but for my money 1994-1995 Phish takes the cake. Also, it’s not every day we get an HD video of Phish from this time period (or ever) and I don’t take it for granted!
I taught junior and senior high kids in mostly public schools over 37 years and yes, chalk dust torture is real ! I would always look forward to the summertime to go on Phish tour with some of my own children. Now that I’m retired, every day is a like summer vacation. One fish 🐠 Two fish 🐟 🐡 Old fish New Phish 🎉

Letterman was always the coolest. Best bands, best guests, they all loved andnwanted to please him. Late Night TV was different before him. Its funny to see Paul jamming with them

Phish is the kind of band that needs to sell out Madison square garden to get on network tv. It’s a major accomplishment beats all odds

I replayed this hundreds of times on my VHS recording. Artists always seemed to sound better on Letterman than anywhere else.
That room just sounds so good.
I just watched them on Conan and it was junk junk

Shortest Chalkdust ever but still brilliant
Sometimes the short versions make more of a statement than the 20 minute versions
They were such a force back then. Phish from 1993-99 you could put up against any band. Still enjoying seeing them today too. Always a good time!
They were a force back in 89 to be honest.
Still can.
