As it has been often said about Jimmy Carter: A good man, but a bad President. He tried but the country needed a different kind of person in the late 70s-early 80s to deal with the kind of problems people were facing. There is a reason Reagan beat him in landslide in 1980 in the worst defeat of an incumbent President since FDR beat Hoover. I think if Carter had been in elected in 1992, when the country was in a more stable position, he probably would have done better.
@@RobertaPowell-kt5zu Yes, he definitely had to contend with many issues as President. He just didn't do enough to alleviate the problems or at least give the impression that he was going to alleviate them. In 1980, Carter carried only 6 states in the electoral college and got just 41% of the popular vote. Those are horrendous numbers for an incumbent President. You can't explain Reagan's overwhelming victory in 1980 if the public thought Carter did a good, or even decent, job as President.

In 1980, Carter carried only 6 states in the electoral college and got just 41% of the popular vote. Those are horrendous numbers for an incumbent President. You can't explain Reagan's overwhelming victory in 1980 if the public thought Carter did a good, or even decent, job as President.
I hadn’t seen this interview before and was blown away by how gently funny President Carter was here, with several great under-the-radar comments. Fantastic interview! R.I.P. Jimmy Carter
5:17 "I wondered about that."
Charming. Like his wit and sense of humour. A man of compassion & integrity. RIP.
This was charming. Such a great sense of humor.
This good man, was my President in my 20’s, and is still an inspiration to me today. I always thought he had a sense of humor, along with his great faith, commitment and passion. David Letterman let the former president be himself, bringing laughter for us to enjoy.
He is an absolute delight.
It’s nice to take a trip in the waaay back machine and see Jimmy and Dave have some fun. Thanks for having this in the ol’ archive. We will miss you President Carter 😊
Carter was a great man. Greetings and condolences from Australia 🇦🇺 😢
What a marvelous example of what human beings should attain to be. Thank you President Carter... I'm happy you are with your beloved again.
He had a great sense of humor. What a blessing this man was to the world
A sad day indeed. Jimmy Carter had his challenges as president, but he is far and away the most successful ex-president we will ever see. Thank you, Mr. President, for being a true gentleman, humanitarian, and inspiration.
I still remember my senior year in high school, cutting class along with about a dozen others, so we could all go to a nearby friend's house to watch the Carter inauguration. I vividly recall Jimmy and Roselynn walking up the avenue, waving to the crowds. The only time I ever cut class, and it was worth it to see history unfold. We may never again see such integrity in the future.
Maybe that's why Jimmy felt it was time to let go.💔
Want to hear a story that's not funny? Jimmy Carter letting hundreds of thousands of mentally insane criminals from Cuba and they bought in cocaine that caused a drug War and millions of overdoses. That's not very funny is it?
Do you recall interest rates at 18% and the long lines at the gas pumps. Jimmy suggested you lower the heat and put on a sweater
@@stevep927 It was the same all over the world. Not just in the US. But you guys were so insular.
@ Like covid but you guys only blamed Trump.......remember ?
@@stevep927 Only because of pathetic lack of management of it ie the pandemic.
President Carter's wit is the canonical definition of "never let them see you coming". Cloaked behind that humility and southern charm is a razor ready to be unleashed when summoned.
What a shining light - RIP! Well-prepared for this interview, he was always well-prepared and ready to do whatever he could to make the world a better place. Thank you, President Carter!!
I love his sense of humor. His demeanor helped him live this long.
Greatest ex president we ever had, what a remarkable human being! RIP Jimmy!
A genuinely good human.
A man of great integrity and compassion for his fellow humans. 😢
The Best President in my life time. Love to your Family!
What a clip.
What a legacy.
Rest in peace.
Great interview! Jimmy Carter had a terrific sense of humor!
The subtle Leno jab to poke fun at Dave was hilarious! (to those old enough to remember the late night talk show wars)
Rest in peace, Mr. President.
Jimmy: I thought I would just put them at ease with a joke.
Dave: Good idea! I try that here occasionally.
Jimmy: I wondered about that!
That response genuinely hit Dave hard. He had been outgunned.
I think the “Carson and Leno” line was set up by the writers backstage. I think the line “I was wondering about that” was ad lib by Carter.
What a good and decent man.
Good night Jimmy.
Thank You For Your Service....🇺🇸
He may not have been the best president, but he’s probably the kindest American to ever have entered the world stage
Best president in my life time by a mile. A true Man of God in all that he did.
I'd say. By leaps and bounds! A wonderful statesman and a true humanitarian.
@@ICU2HIyou have got to be kidding, he created the rustbelt 900,000 jobs lost and 8% inflation, gas crisis plus 2 years of Iranian hostage crisis, if he was your best I hate to see your worst.
He did nothing of the sort. You are a Trumper and a Traitor!

I remember a time in this country where people discussed topics in this fashion. “Put Down Humor “ was frowned upon. A true definition of class, and when I grow up I want to be just like him. R.I.P. Mr. President….

Better plant some peanuts
God Bless this man!
Excellent guest...what a humble yet funny man. Thanks Dave.
I'm finding about celebrity deaths from these clips more than I do from news sources. Rest in Peace President Carter. You were a far better president than people give you credit for. I wish politicians today took the unpopular but necessary steps to fight inflation the way Jimmy Carter did.
@@PhilMoskowitz well Mr Biden got it down to 2+%, but it seems your media didn’t want you to know about it.
He set an excellent example. ❤
Lovely interview. Thanks for uploading and thanks to President Carter
I love that Paul and the band played "Georgia on My Mind" instead of "All Hail the Chief." He deserved the latter because he was POTUS but the former really fit him. Classy touch Paul!
President Jimmy Carter contributed more to the world and the human race, post presidency, far more than any other ex-President. A man of humanity, integrity and funny as hell. Rest In Peace and thank you for your service
My aunt worked with President Carter since the beginning of Habitat for Humanity. Please consider donating or volunteering to a wonderful organization. RIP, Sir.
Sweet sweet man with a lovely sense of humor...
Very humble, compassionate and sincere and respectful.
And hilarious! 😂❤
This is the first time I've ever seen President Carter's sense of humor on full display. Love the subtly. Might not have been the best president, but certainly our most morally upright president
Hands down, the best president of my lifetime. A true American. RIP Jimmy. ❤❤❤
I saw this uploaded and knew there was a reason, RIP to a good man.
R.I.P President Carter, Thank you for your service 🌹🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜🥜😊
Like when he deregulated oil prices and screwed over the poor & working class who were dependent on oil? Or when he gave away the Panama Canal? Or when he failed to rescue US hostages in Iraq? No, Sir. No, Thank You for your service. His post-presidency resume is much better. But the peanut farmer petered out pretty quickly as the POTUS.
I just heard the heartbreaking news of President Jimmy Carter. He was Such a Good & Giving Man, half of the whole. May he & Rosalyn RIP in Heaven together forever. ☀️
"I meet a lot of famous DiMaggio, Carson, Leno and so forth...". And it just got better and better. Good bye and thankyou for your humanity, Mr. President.
so refreshing . A kind compassionate person.

They didn't even invite him when they hung his portrait!! SMH...people think this division and pettiness is new.
@@MTMountainMan5411 I read that he requested that they not have a ceremony.
Couldn't help it. I shed a Liberal tear yesterday. Just a good man. He led by example.
What a fine gentleman of integrity, principles honor and humor. Sorely missing American politics today.
Rest in Peace, President Carter, you embodied humanity at it's finest!
JC ended the insanity in Vietnam. Pardoned my dad and 320,000 others that chose Canada over Vietnam, and he stood up to Israel to his dying breath. The ONLY president of my lifetime (1959-2025) that is deserving of respect.
Now that makes him a real patriot. He pardoned deserters

A month or two before this interview, the Carters were in Winnipeg for a Habitat build. My parents were volunteers, my mom on the food services team. She claims to have witnessed the Carters sampling genuine Manitoba perogies for the first time.

Honest, genuine, high integrity, kind, principled, and a humanitarian with a sense of humor to boot. In short, 100% the opposite in every regard of what's about to take over leading the country and the free world.
