Trey Anastasio is no stranger to the Tiny Desk, having performed a solo set in 2015. Bassist Mike Gordon and drummer Jon Fishman also performed for our Tiny Desk (home) concert series in 2020 with guitarist Leo Kottke. And now, finally, we get a full Phish Tiny Desk concert.
The set began with “Sigma Oasis,” which included a little musical reference to the All Things Considered theme song. The band continued with “Evolve,” a track from its 16th studio album released last week. Before the band’s final song, Anastasio and Gordon warmed up their fingers on tiny trampolines, which likely had the uninitiated scratching their heads. But for fans of this band, it was a clear signal of what was coming next: “You Enjoy Myself,” a song that dates back to the band’s beginnings and can safely be called a Phish classic. In live performances, the jam segment features choreographed bouncing, and the band brought that spectacle right into our office.
After, the band ended its set and swerved out slowly through the crowd, singing while giving out high fives. But the audience's applause didn’t stop, so Phish came back out and played two bonus tracks: “Sample in a Jar” and “Chalk Dust Torture.” “When we started the band, we used to practice in a room exactly this size… it was probably smaller,” Anastasio shared. What a gift to get to watch Phish perform in a similarly sized room 41 years later.

Phish is the only band that would play two sets at a tiny desk concert
nah it was just a "Tiny" encore ;)
Or one long tweezer reprise
They’re the only band who would attempt to do the entire Beatles White album uninterrupted live on stage!
2 tiny sets
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard would do a week long residency and release four new albums during that time.
Sigma Oasis 0:00
Evolve 5:24
You Enjoy Myself 12:12
Sample in a Jar 24:18
Chalkdust Torture 28:52
Just love that they broke out the tramps and even delivered a vocal jam! Lol, staying true to themselves after all these years. Nothing but love for the Phish from Vermont. 😉
Tiny Desk, Tiny Set
'All Things Considered' tease at 4:13 and then a bunch more after the end of the tune.
so much for surprises!

The amount of people who's first time hearing Phish is this and are loving it is incredibly heart-warming and vindicating 😂
❤❤
Ill say it i'm in my twenties and never got into Phish this was an amazing performance probably one of the best i've seen on NPR.
I had the exact same thought in the early nineties when all the little tour heads migrated over after Jerry died....Except I felt bad that none of them knew the fire of Phish in their prime.
These dudes just radiate joy and share it freely with others. Truly a gift.
they radiate "old"
Love and Light'd haha
Radiate Awesomeness!!
Is it legal to have that many funky talented uncles in a confined space like that?
Phish Fans are the worst people on the planet. Jam Band? More like take your parents after 25 years and jam it in. It's beyond Dave Mathews Cult obnoxious. I will stand on this. Phish Fan are Horrible people.
No children here were good

They squeezed all of Chuck Brown's band in there, so they are def under the legal limit here.

fishman has to be the most slept on drummer of all time. listening to him play on this stripped down kit is something else. MVP
he's the most talented member of the band - hence the band is named after him

This kit sounds terrible to me. Great playing but the kit sounds flat. He's a great player though- love his album with Jamie Masefields Jazz Mandolin Project for an example of him on a small kit.
I think he gets his roses personally.
Must be a different engineer! Usually his drums sound very small
Life has been challenging lately and this is the lift I needed. No other band can plaster a permasmile on my face the way these four do. I’m grateful for their presence in my life over the last 26 years. Joy. Just pure joy.

Cheers to you dude

Had an English teacher in HS 10 years ago who loved to talk about Phish concerts and always found an excuse to show us a live performance here and there on UA-cam. He always tried to make one of the NYE concerts @ MSG.
Hope you enjoy this one Mr. O’Brien!
That was my senior year English teacher in high school to a tee, very cool guy and not just for his love of Phish.
O'Brien comment if you see this, epic call-out @johnnnlee !!
Jumping in to say my HS chemistry teacher was also big phan and would talk about the Phish from Vermont with us when music came up in class. It took me like 10 more years before I read the book but shout to Mr. Cushing a real 1.0 og! Everyone should read icculus!
🎉wow, sample in a jar is such a fuid song. I've always said this song is on my top ten list. I love Hoist.
Me too!! It was my prob and stats teacher, we almost went to Bonnaroo together. Thanks, Mr. Weber!
Sample In A Jar was the first song I ever heard from Phish. It was 30 years ago and heard them on a public radio station. After the song they gave away two tickets for Phish at Red Rocks and I called and won. I took my girlfriend and instantly had a new favorite band. Meant to be.
It's nice to see an up and coming band at the tiny desk. Whatever they or we do. Take care of your shoes!

Probably the most creative music ever played at a Tiny Desk concert.
YOU ENJOY MYSELF. HAD NO BUSINESS BEING THIS GOOD. Stripped down phish, you discover just how tight and groovy they are.
It is truly unimaginable. The best of all time.
I was really wondering how they were going to segue into the vocal end. Very nice groove that they came up with.

My brother was a huge Deadhead and 15 years older so he had travelled with them but wasn’t into Phish but I met a wook (he literally became a wook for like a decade but was mostly normal at Uni) and he told me if I like The Dead I would love Phish and he played YEM and Divided Sky and I was hooked, good times

Best live band ever and the relationship with the fans is unlike any other in music.
I am overcome with emotion. Today, I had to tell a young man, only 45, that he had lung cancer that has spread throughout his body. To be overwhelmed with that grief today was difficult. This has brought me the peace I needed and by the time Sample played I was back in my 20s dancing to the music and filled by the joy that music gives us all. I am so thankful for this respite.
Thank you for everything you do and are. Bless you❤
I second that. Thank you and all medical professionals. I doubt it can be said enough. Im still around because of help I needed years ago.
Thank you Dr for all you do. I can only imagine the grief that you deal with on a daily basis. Bless you and all our medical people. You are all amazing!

If you notice there is always somebody using lines like this to elicit likes. Oh poor you running to a UA-cam video for sick selfish narcissistic reasons. A real doctor in that situation would never do what you did

@@PSM_Art With Phish!? Looking for the exit sign! 😄
Phish is the perfect example of the late 80s and early 90s arts school kids that still keep the energy going. They're like a living, breathing, Berkeley Brethead painting.
Omg, what a great band!! Never heard of you guys before over here in europe…
They are The Phish From Vermont. Very good band
Kind of on the downlow, these guys have been the biggest band in the US since Jerry Garcia died in 95. They don't get airplay or sell albums the way other bands did, but they toured constantly and have been selling out stadiums since like 97. It's not shocking you haven't heard of them over there though.
1st time hearing Phish. Great sound.
Welcome, Phan!😊
Now see them live. You won’t regret it. Might even make a new friend or two.

Never in my life did I think I'd get to see Phish jumping on trampolines while playing Tiny Desk!!! This is absolutely incredible! How can you not love these guys!!!
Most having fun band I’ve ever witnessed, just so goofy and awesome
Phish has brought me tremendous amounts of joy in my 33years on this Earth. I first saw them in 2009, as a senior in HS. To date I've seen them over 120x and cannot wait until the next show I attend!
BETHEL WOOOOODS
I was late to the party. 2009 was my first year, too! Festival 8. I heard of the band, but never listened to their stuff. Just showed up, and it changed my life!
2009 also first show at alpine valley. What an amazing journey it's been seeing these guys for the last 15 years. Also agree that their music has brought me so much joy.
Dude! Me too!! Bonnaroo was my first show and I had just graduated high school. I’ve only been to 47 shows though. Can’t wait to get back out there, Phish gives me so much joy!!! ✌🏻

They sound just as tight at this tiny desk concert as they do at any arena or amphitheater, it's a real testament to their ability as musicians.
Do you have music that as soon as you hear the first note your worries leave your shoulders, your smile returns, and the day just seems a little brighter? For me it’s Phish.
20 years ago I was 18 and saw my first show at Great Woods, on Friday my almost four year old son will see his first show at the same venue by my side. Grateful Mom is an understatement. This band has made me a happier person, a wilder dancer and a better listener. Love you Phish, love you Pham.

How fitting that this is the longest tiny desk set (ever??) with a double-encore to boot!

@@bamafencer12 The Tiny Desk sound crew is amazing so I expected nothing less. Phish and their crew is a well-oiled machine at the top of their game right now. I saw them a couple nights last summer in an ampitheater and the sound was perfect, the light show was perfect, and the band started and finished on time to the minute without the encores feeling rushed. I saw Widespread at the same venue a few weeks later and it was a total letdown in comparison with the sound overdriven and muddy.
This one and Mac Miller are the best for sure

Of course Phish would manage to play two sets and an encore at their Tiny Desk Concert!
Set 1:
Sigma Oasis 0:00
Evolve 05:28
Set 2:
You Enjoy Myself 12:15
Encore:
Sample in a Jar 24:20
Chalk Dust Torture 28:52
Love all these guys so much but Trey is such a ray of sunshine.
Trey of Sunshine
Audio team at Tiny Desk Concerts is so good; this sounds great!
Phish is representative of good in the world. I'm so glad I got to see them 7 or 8 times when I was young. Can I live while I'm 49? ... YES
I feel like the lyrics to YEM will eventually defeat the AI overlords
That's because Phish traveled back in time to tell us how to avert the apocalypse.
They have read the book.. 📖 have you? ⭕️
Unless our future digital despots speak Italian. ☹️😩
Snares off! Tre jumping off the mini trampoline and hitting the first note of his solo and landing on the 1 all at the same time during You Enjoy Myself was awesome!
Simply one of the greatest bands ever!! So happy this popped up on my radar today. Thank you a million times Trey, Paige, Mike, and Jon ❤
Trey still has a legendary guitar tone that always warms my soul. 😊
