Tedeschi Trucks Band: Tiny Desk Concert

When singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi sings and plays, you can hear the sound move from the Mississippi Delta up to Chicago. As this video shows, she can dispense uptempo dance grooves and coax her voice around the anguished lyric of the blues.
At the same time, guitarist Derek Trucks seems to summon forth the entirety of contemporary music when he slides his bottle neck up and down the fretboard. As you'll see, The Tedeschi Trucks Band functions in the service of a collective vision that celebrates the blues, jazz and so much more.

Derek is so good that most people comment about him instead of Susan. She’s SO good. They are all so good but singing is so hard and Susan always kills it. Pitch perfect in a really hard way
True story.
They are no thing less than great!
Please give the Tiny Desk sound engineer a Nobel Prize!
Can you tell me why? Just curious to know.
@@mortrock Is that what I said? Or is it what you think? Why is there always that one person who needs to bring negativity into everything they get their hands on?
@@steffiduarte8347 Because he manages to bring out every little nuance, every little sound. It's hard to do that, especially with a full band playing in such a small room. Susan and Derek give me goosebumps as it is, but with this quality of sound it's just a different story
@@Kengouruhey thanks for replying! My bro is a sound engineer hence I asked :) I’ve shared this with him to see what he thinks too! You don’t see a lot of people appreciating the people that can’t be seen doing the work too !
The sound on these concerts is better than Live Production for these bands.
Susan and Derek are my absolute favorites and are helping me cope with my wife's Alzheimer's. Their music takes me away and gives me a break from reality. Thank you guys, Love you!!
i just went thru dementia with my step father, and then also lost my dad to covid. i definatley found some peace with music, and im glad you have too, good luck to you brother, and stay strong, god bless!

But believe in the name that has power, Jesus, and seek his presence through the Holy Scriptures and prayer, and he can heal. Just believe.
I'm from Europe, I love you guys for this unique tone of music, thank you so much.
Transition into “Anyhow” with Derek’s guitar, Susan looking over and then her emotional vocal layering in… makes a grown man wanna cry. Bless this light in our world today
You are most correct, and I agree.
I’ve cried every time I hear that track. Stunningly moving.

It's what I loooooove sooooo much about music, it isnt just the music or the style... its the emotion, the happiness & the joy it brings, nothing really brings ppl together on this planet quite like music
Never have I seen someone hit a solo that hard while maintaining the facial expression of reading the morning paper LOL. This band is ridiculously talented.
How tha hell did they fit two drummers in that little room. By tha way tha band kicks ass.

CORRECT !
This is the best TDC I've ever seen. If they had been around in the 70's they'd been as big as the Stones and Zep. Her voice is unreal.
She's channeling some power. Her voice is ridiculously awesome.
Bonnie Raitt II
Absolutely fabulous
The songs are different but the magic of this band is… he’ll just listen to it. Watch them. This is magic.
If by unreal you mean overbearing af, then yes … unreal.
@@tdb517: So you’re saying Jagger’s voice is great and the musicians are too?
The transition to “Anyhow” is so captivating.
After that Sax solo, the slow strumming of Derek's open tuning guitar gave me goosebumps cause I recognized what song was coming next
As incredible a guitarist Derek Trucks is, I think I love most that he always has his eyes shut. The man seems to just LOVE the music, even after all these years.
Do you play any instruments?? Because that feeling is incredible lol! I hope you can experience it one day also!
Dereks true skill lies in his humility and restraint. That being said i could listen to him shred for hours. A true guitar hero.
Jam Xandre I totally agree and always noticed that when I see them live.
If you practice long enough, anyone can play fast and shred. But being a great guitarist requires patience. It's not about playing a lot of notes; it's about playing the right notes. And then tearing the friggin roof off.
@@tristandeppe5215 Agreed my friend! It's all about the soul.
Greatest guitar player on the planet for exactly that reason!!
But every once in a while he lets loose and.....man!!!

Are they a soul band....Yes
Are they a blues band..Yes
Are they a funk band....Yes

Wow.... You must be a genius :)
Very good comment!
But Zydeco ?!?
Zydeco is Funk+Blues I guess... :-)
There's a bit of country in there too.
I can't believe I've gone so long without discovering Tedeschi Trucks. Such beautiful, soulful songs. Susan's voice is so resonant and powerful. I could listen to her sing all day.
See derek trucks do Layla at 13
Derek and Susan have been playing together for a long.... long time and you can tell
My husband and I became aware of Derek's talent through some televised Allman Bros concerts and we were hooked. Started looking for him here and come to find he is partnered with this musical Unicorn and the tightest most joyful band I've come across in decades. What a find, what a treasure. UA-cam has enriched my musical landscape beyond measure.
They formed in 2010 and I am just finding out about them today, shame on me.
Welcome to the fold. Another great band today is Blackberry Smoke. Give them a listen. No horn section, but a VERY good live band.
The patience that allowed Derek Trucks to become such a penultimate guitarist also serves him well to be a Jacksonville Jaguars fan
Awesome comment. Did you see the jags soundly thrashed the Titans this past Sunday?? Things are coming together, finally.
Love Tedeshi-Trucks band & the Jags.
@@lesliebrown6428 yes. Loved it. But don't get me started...😆

You may want to look up the definition of “penultimate”.
Susan's voice stands alone on it's own without any "special effects"....just AMAZING !
Couldn't agree more. I've listened to this dozens of time and i still get chills in my spine when she sings. This is so amazing
First of all, the Tiny Desk Concert sound engineers must be amazing. Eleven people up there and it is all crystal clear and you can hear everyone.
Second, I love Susan's smiles when Derek is soloing.
Pat Balint Yeah they ought to get together or something...
@@zac3392 They've been married since 2001
@@mrs2807 *Sigh... Nobody gets my jokes...
The magic of hyper cardioid microphones and maybe some over dubbing! They are also amazing musicians who are holding back on their power. The fact that the vocals came out this well is in part due to the engineers. The mix is very good in a less than ideal room.
@@zac3392 I do! Didn't fly over this one! Lol
Scrolled through the comments. And no comment about the crazy sax solo at 8:30. He just shots of and take the whole gig to another genre. A complete different place. And it’s tasteful and fits right in. Genius. I love it.
a true Jazz man solo..
Absolutely!!❤
Seriously!! He went deeeeep
It's not soul, it's squirellin'. That's jazz and jazz is for tossers.
he's got the holy ghost in him
Still the greatest thing on The Internet.
Anyhow (track #3) is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen....a perfect song and perfect performance. And for a band that consistently knocks it out of the park, you can even see it on their faces. This is a special performance.
What can I say? This band probably really represents what American music is really about - combining blues, jazz, rock 'n' roll, with all kinds of music instruments in such a cohesive way! Wow!!!
Mickey Chiu True,true
All kinds of races too.
Mickey Chiu well put!
And gender too..
So much quality, feel, techniqe on show. Susan is a soul bomb and Derek is the coolest of all the guitar greats..............that finger style man! The rest of the band are sooo good.
Susan's voice is aligned with her breathing it is so natural. The inflection of her voice aligns with the music PERFECTLY.
They are a COMPLETE spiritual experience. The nuances are incredible. Their sound harkens back to those from generations past, and transcends music into an entirely new realm.
most talent i've ever seen out of someone wearing a jaguars logo!
+Michael Bowe LOL Got that right , but I still like the QB, got to some protection, and some receivers, but this band has a lot of talent!!!

Like how Susan forgets the words on "Any How" looks at Derrick, he smiles ever so slightly. She finishes the rest and giggles lol! Everyone messes up. It's how you recover that matters. Most people probably didn't even catch it.
Second song - when the horns come in, it must have blown that tiny room away! Everybody smiles when it happens! Great energy - always brightens my day to hear these people play.
I think they laugh cause the horns were not supposed to play in that section 😂

Susan isn’t too shabby on guitar either. She can sure play
She plays damn good...
@@samviscomi14 She can play for sure ... but when Jonathan plays it just sounds like it's otherworldly. Like his soul is plugged into the spirit of the music.
furieuxx who is Jonathan?
There's a layer in this performance where some of the musicians acknowledge that it's a weird place to play a show, the sound isn't anything like they're used to and there's glances and nods among them to that end. The funny thing is even though that's going on they still turn in an absolute diamond set that's still picking up serious views even in 2021. Incredible scenes.
Such joy, just brings tears to my eyes listening to people who love the music, play from the heart and the hip, Susan is the biz, brings back the feelings of 60s gigs, (yes, longlived geiser) They are all wonderful, love to hear them live every week . . . .

My bandmates and I just saw them live at Peach Fest and were blown away, so much soul in these artists and so much soul shared out into the world. Highly enjoyed every aspect of it, I may have cried during a sax solo XD
For me, even all these years later, the way Susan looks at Derek when he's shredding still brings a small tear to my eye :')
The Tiny Desk format reveals the humanity of the artist better than any other I can think of. We don't just hear a great set, we see the human behind the music. For instance, Susan's joy in her husband , the connection, Derek's focus and zen-master calm. We end up knowing far more about the human behind the sound than we deserve.
There are no words to express how much I love this band and appreciate the music they are making. I wish my father was still around. He would have loved this.

I like these "Tiny" shows, the sound is usually better than in big spaces!
Infinitely better, ask any monk, acoustics are everything
I saw Derek for the first time in Fort Myers Fl. in a little club. I think he was 14 years old.
I was blown away. Since then I've been a huge fan. In my humble opinion, Tedeschi Trucks band is currently the best band in the land. Susan's vocals are so soulful and everyone in the band is so humble. All of them are world class musicians. There is definitely a sharing of something deeper than just chords, notes, melodies and harmonies that transpires when you see these guys. So thank you for all of the incredible music. And I hope you guys keep doing it for many years to come.
I have always preferred bands with 3-5 members. Tedeschi Trucks proves to be special because they exhibit a tightness with almost a dozen people that one rarely sees in a smaller group. From the horn section to the rhythm section (featuring 2 drummers) to the backup singers to the amazing talents of Derek and Susan, everyone adds an element that makes such beautiful noise. I could listen all day to this blues symphony.
