Britney’s greatest work?

- In 2007, despite a series challenges in her personal life, Britney Spears released her fifth studio album, Blackout - a record that would go on to become the most critically acclaimed of her long and storied career & one of the most influential of the 21st century.
So just how did Britney pull it off? Why was Nate ‘Danja’ Hills chosen as a producer on the album? How did they decide which tracks to work on and which to abandon? Why did the record end up sounding so adventurous and experimental? Who thought of the iconic opening line ‘It’s Britney bitch?’ What iconic 2007 pop song was written for Blackout but Britney’s team passed on it? What happened with the ‘Gimme More’ video? And is it true that Britney’s ex JT and Timbaland nearly ended up on the album? This mini-documentary explores all these questions and more.

Britney's Blackout album is outstanding. Such an amazing cohesive vibe with totally compelling music.
agreed
I'm a huge Britney fan and I wss obsessed with Blackout. It's a shame Britney was going through such a torrid time in her personal life. I'd love to see Britney come back
yes what Britney has gone through in her life is awful. Poor woman😥
"Blackout" is one of my all time favourite albums, I looove it. I thought she would never make another epick album like "In the zone" and than "Blackout" just blew my mind.
Yep really solid songs underpinning an experimental and adventurous soundscape - quality 😃
Without a doubt her most credible album still sounds fantastic today Britney's masterpiece 👍🏻🎵⭐
yes it still stands today 😃
@@jonnyharvey When the fans had to do the album title poll, idk why Dignity was offered as Hilary Duff had released her album Dignity a whole 5 or 6 months prior to Blackout.
Is that some shade to Ms Duff or something because if so, I'm not going to be happy
@@ryanappleton3653 on my part? No - I know next to nothing about Hilary Duff.
I miss explicitly minor key pop music both of this variety and in the vein of late 90's/early 2000's Max Martin-esque V chord heavy music. Both trends were completely unafraid of using 2, b6, and (natural) 7 in the melody. Look at Nu-Di-Ty by Kylie. The "Just let it slip inside" descends stepwise from 5 down to natural 7, then "One button at a time" does the stepwise descent to 1, but jumps back up to 5 and moves up to b6 before jumping to 4. That's every harmonic minor note. You don't see stuff like that in pop music anymore. Minor key music in mainstream pop music has sadly almost exclusively turned into pentatonic melodies, with very non-direcitonal harmony, and VERY little use of the V chord. It makes me so sad.
wow - you really know your music. A lot of technical knowledge there - very impressive.
I love how Kylie Minogues 2007 X come back album from cancer and this Britney Spears album where the two pop albums that helped bring EDM back to four front world wide 💯 then Lady Gaga took it from there in 2008, then EDM ruled through 2010s.... Such a good era for music, the 2000s in general....
💯👌🎤
yep it was a brilliant few years for pop music - exciting times 😃
I was living in London when that was released, everybody was surprised how come she released an album and when did she have the time to do so especially with all the drama of shaving her head, the custody of the children, the divorce, problems with her father, et cetera, this album is a great album
I was living in London at the time aswell and I remember being really surprised the reviews were so great 😃
She recorded a majority of it during her second pregnancy, and the rest is producers’ magic.
@@jonnyharvey no way, I know we are talking. Why do our worlds apart hehe keep up the good work
Nearly every contemporary music critic has hailed Blackout as *THE POP BIBLE* for it's futuristic and experimental sound of techno, avant disco, urban and EDM.
The best thing about the album is its cohesion, production by Bloodshy & Avant and Danja and Britney's vocals.
Plus all of the collaborators and songwriters (Danja, Keri Hilson, Jim Beanz, Sean Garrett, Pharrell, T Pain) have spoken of Spears' in high regard with her professionalism and polite attitude, even in the midst of her personal woes.
Yea everyone of them spoke so highly about her & how easy she was to work with 😀
Blackout is my all time favorite pop album!!
It's a classic!
Thank you for your channel, your videos are very relevant! For me, her best album without a doubt, may be the most "sincere", the only one for which she is credited Executive producer. I think this record influenced the hyperpop movement a lot.
😀😀
I remember when this album came out, I was 16 and absolutely everyone at school would love "piece of me" and "gimme more"
ah memories 😃
You going into "screensaver mode" at the end of the bloopers made my day. (I do it often!)
I must do it a lot, cause people mention it to me all the time. I space out very easily.
@@jonnyharvey All the best people do!
Blackout has such an unique sonority... When you hear it, It isn't just pop, R&b or hip Hop, It is neither the music that was playing at the time, but this unbelievable savage exploding beat. It is a classic to be listed on the greatest albuns of all the time, hands down.
Yessss! Been waiting for a blackout video from you. ❤
hope it delivered 😀
Yesssss! Thank you for this Jonny 😍😍😍 .
😀🙏
Best video ❤❤❤❤❤
thank you ♥
I was waiting for this Jonny! You are sucha legend! ♥
Thanks - hope you liked it 😀
Thank your for this video. This is exactly what I was looking for 🙏🏻
😀🙏
I loved Piece of Me and Radar! I listen to the dance remixes every time I go to the gym! Such brilliant songs!
The pop bible!!
Great vid x
thanks 😃
Great job as always! 😊
thank you😃
love all your videos 💞
thank you 😀
It’s funny how people back then shaded Britney at the time but the new generation especially gen Z loves her and her songs from her Blackout and Circus era.
Blackout is excellent (seconded by In The Zone quite closely)
it's the pop bible!
LEGENDARY POP ICON
PRINCESS OF POP
😀
that last quote by her is so fire!!!!!! i love it
Yeah Britney understood the magic of the album 😀
Blackout = pop bible.
You sir, MORE BLOOPERS ❤️😍
Yeah the blooper are.....entertaining 😂
My favorite Britney album!😊
Love this album ❤🎉
😀
Very good. It would be interesting to know why certain songs never made it to the album, like Let Go and Baby Boy, these unreleased material were written by her and very personal (regarding her divorce), wonder if it was her call not to make the album too personal.
That would be interesting. I never came across that information
@@jonnyharvey yeah, the songs are available here in UA-cam. They're some of my favorite from her, lyrics and vocal wise
I mean Britney’s right she didn’t need Timba or Justin she’s so iconic for not letting the two men who perpetuated an image of her as a cheater on her magnum opus
I like Blackout, but In the zone remains my absolute favorite.
Oh that’s interesting - there are definitely solid songs on ‘In the Zone’ 😀
Could you please do a video of the unreleased tracts from blackout.. you can find them everywhere esp here on YT.. Again thanks for the great content!😁
thank you. Yes I will definitely look into. I'm not sure if I will do another Britney video anytime soon TBH - my two Britney videos haven't done well thus far.
I remember thinking the album art was bad and the music sounded half-finished kind of? Like all over the place. But in retrospect, love going back to it
Yeah I really didn’t like the artwork or the photoshoot at the time. I’m not too bothered about them now
I thought the album was a masterpiece on first listen and was surprised by the amount of mixed reviews. Superficially, I just wished she had gotten a higher quality black wig for the cover and corresponding photo shoot. The cheap wig, the troubled Gimme More video and the rough VMA performance drew too much attention away from how truly great the album was!
yes there was a lot of negative PR around the album at the time, which was a shame.
The Bible of Pop 👏
😀
No doubt about it, Blackout is Britney's Thriller/Rumours/Nevermind/Abbey Road
Its Britney's classic
do u have a video on original doll?
No I chose not to include it or I’d never get the video finished. Apologies
@@jonnyharvey wait what do u mean? i didnt ask if it was mentioned in this video, i asked if you have one on it lol.
@@ihavecrabs56 no there isn't a separate video on it.
WHERE ARE THE GAGA VIDEOS
I really want to do one - I have 2/3 solid ideas. Gaga covers so much ground so they will takes ages. But I love Gaga. I will try to do one by the end of the summer
Was surprised you didn’t mention that Lady Gaga actually wrote a couple of songs for the album, most notable Quicksand which has her backing vocals on.
Was it for that album? Didn't Quicksand end up on Circus? Do you have a link for that information?
@@jonnyharvey oops my bad! Yes it was for Circus, she wrote Telephone and Quicksand for Britney, in 2008 before The Fame was released. I remember reading an interview with Gaga about writing for Britney whilst Circus was being done. Would love to see you do these type one of these for the Circus album and some of Gaga’s albums 😊
@@rjlennon8240 oh it's fine, don't worry. Yes I have to do Gaga soon. My Britney videos haven't done that well thus far, so we'll see.
So she just goes there to choose songs … how creative she is
Well leading a music project, deciding what sounds to pursue, choosing songs & collaborators & bringing it altogether at the end is a talent I would argue.
@@jonnyharvey what I like about you is that you answer your followers! Great job!
@@mohamedanisferchichi2071 well I feel I should - when people take the time and energy to comment. It's the least I can do.
They didn't want umbrella cuz of Britney hit that car with an umbrella
maybe
Pop bible!
