What was Madonna's last great era?

- We all know there is no such thing as a bad Madonna album but the Queen of Pop’s output since Hard Candy, and continuing right through the 2010s, is generally not considered to be Madge at the peak of her powers.
So in this video I will analyse which of the diva’s post 2008 albums & eras were her best. Yes MDNA and Madame X were received favourably but the general consensus is that Hard Candy and Rebel Heart were the better albums. This mini-documentary explores which was the best album and era.
P.S - I would like to stress that this video is not a takedown of Madge. IMHO Madonna is still the Queen of pop & her achievements over the last four decades are nothing short of astonishing - so just to be clear!!

Answer is Confessions on a Dance Floor released in 2005. It’s been downhill for her since that album. But Confessions is a masterpiece of pop music and one of her best albums of her career.
Agreed 💯... I use to be a fan of hers but she's just crazy now days plus in Auckland when I seen her Rebel Heart tour she was 2hours late on stage, horrible live voice and she hardly danced and when she tired it was pretty lack laster and the stage was pretty small for that tour compered to other stage shows in past.... Not had a good album since 2005 so I'm pretty done with ever spending any my $ on her and would never pay to see her live ever again! 👌💯
@@shaunhoward6838 As if you were a real fan to begin with lmao anytime I hear an alleged Madonna “fan” say she’s crazy now I know the person was never a fan. You’re a casual. How she acts now is how she acted in the beginning of her career. And anyone that’s known her is familiar with how she is today. You Johnny come lately fans of hers in the early 2000s that bought into her playing the lady of the manor just shy of a decade really bought it. Go listen to Katy Perry
Confessions was a benchmark by which excellence is judged
A lot of people are saying that
I disagree. I don't like Confessions on a Dance Floor, because it is too atmospheric, too ambient , very boring sound and album. My favorite Madonna album, out of her entire discography, is Hard Candy, because it is her most dance electronic album, and her most catchy album. It is created for dance radio hits , and for the dancefloor. It's house music. Hard Candy all the way.!❤
To me her last great era was Hard Candy, not particularly because of the album, but because of the gigantic Sticky & Sweet Tour.
It was a pretty good show
AGREED
I still listen to Hard Candy. It is a great album. My Favorite tracks: Miles Away, She's Not Me, Incredible, Heartbeat
What about spanish lesson? It's my favourite
Incredible and Spanish Lessons are pure trash!
@@brettwebb7252 I like it, I just don't love it.
Miles Away and Heartbeat are criminally underrated 💯

Many people say that starting with Hard Candy Madonna stopped being cutting edge and a trendsetter, and instead became more of a follower. But in my opinion Rebel Heart did do exactly what made her so cutting edge before; she was very good at finding upcoming musical trends and capitalizing on them and bringing them to the mainstream before anyone else. And with Rebel Heart, she sensed the impending rise of the sound we now call hyperpop, particularly with the production styles of Sophie. And she brought Sophie’s production into the album and several songs on the album have productions that feel like a precursor to the genre. But I feel that those sounds were drowned out by other sounds also found on the album, while the bad publicity surrounding her at the time drowned out the entire album as a whole. It was almost as if she may have lost confidence in her ear for upcoming trends at the time and wasn’t willing to, or maybe wasn’t allowed to, fully commit the full album to it as she had with the various trends she used in earlier albums. While Lady Gaga’s ARTPOP was years too early for listeners to be ready to embrace those sounds, it wasn’t until other artists like Charli XCX and various kpop groups fully embraced the sound in the months and years after Rebel Heart was released that the genre really exploded. On a side note, me personally I love Madame X; it is so clearly meant to be an artistic statement instead of anything remotely commercial and to me that is something so refreshing. Popular music in recent years has started feeling so cookie cutter and manufactured that it was getting boring, and I’d love to see more artists willing and able to take major artistic risks to help reset the musical landscape
I think that RH has some really great tracks on it. It just suffers from too many musical styles because of too many producers. If she had cut half or three quarters it would have been brilliant. It's just to big and hefty an album to get your head around.
I also really like most of MX, my only problem with it is the far too overused damm auto tune. I mean it's on every damm track. It ruins the flow, especially the songs that are very confessional, because her voice is distorted and that takes away from the authenticity that the lyrics created.
I still think that she is an extremely talented songwriter and producer. She is a genius but needs to work with a great producer. She seems to be in the studio with Stuart Price I assume working on versions on material for the Celebration Tour. I would love to see her make new music with him. They have a short hand with him in the studio and they understand each other. Also, he did doesn't stand on air and graces with her. He talks to her very directly and for that reason they produce work and great work together quickly! ❤️❤️
Love your assesment. Rebel Heart as an intended double album can be done & could’ve been a much bigger success (see The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness). A lot of the leak version of the songs sounds contemporary & accessible. Those kanye west re-dos were so jarring (gag!) in contrast to Madonna’s glove fitting sounds.
Who is Sophie?

@@GreetingsFromBlackwoodFarm thanks what song did she write on RH i can’t find her in any of the credits
Madame X, easily her biggest artistic statement since Confessions
It was definitely a statement
Madame X is not really great. The only standout song there is Future.
Nope!
@@eduardochavacano No man I disagree for me the whole madame x album is truly artistic and interesting except "I rise"
EASILY
I think rebel heart is better than hard candy
Way better
Yes yes yes I loved rebel heart
Wasn't a fan of hard candy
You must be joking.🤔
100x better
Not for me. Rebel Heart unfortunately contains re-do mess & fillers. If she just stand up for herself & go ahead for double album & maintain the leak version with minor polishing, it would have been a mammoth masterpiece!!
Madame X was her last great album/era. The release itself was artistic, inspired, genre-spanning, and one of the most experimental records of her career. No pop artist in their SIXTIES is coming up with forward-thinking material like this. The era also gave us six stunning music videos and a concert tour that was pure performance art. Madonna in top form! Can't wait to see what she comes up with for her Celebration Tour.
agreed, 100%
Madame X does seem to have a lot of fans.
Experimental is great, but not when the melodies are basic, auto tune is used, and the ideas are half baked. I will be gay if THE GAY are... Madonna is most music ally celrbrnated for the melodies and lyrics of her entire career. Mirwais served her well with Music and American Life, but he did not serve her well here.
lol
Madame X was a great album and a worthy comeback after the messes that were MDNA and Rebel Heart. Unfortunately Medellin was not a strong lead single. The album was more geared to her fans than the general listening public.
No artist can compete with her legacy… love it or hate it. Period.
Truth must be told.
Totally. Others can claim their faves is all that… but none of them have the bulk of a timeline that is worthy for a non-stop action movie. Even her name commands her true Majesty. Madonna needs no fake stage name like some other pop divas!
Michael Jackson.
Love your videos, especially your Madonna coverage.
Keep up the great work!
thank you😃🙏
Hard Candy was my Madonna entry point and my favorite album from her. I've since gotten into Ray of Light, Bedtime stories and American Life.
You have to listen to Like a Prayer also. I envy you -discovering all Madonna's work for the first time.
@@jonnyharveyoooh ok I’ll give that a listen next! Yeah it’s a lot of fun listening to it all with no context and then realizing how much she influenced trends and sonic shifts over the years.
Hard candy is very much a throw back to the R&B/disco sound of her debut....its better than confessions imo...its upfront, cohesive and such a solid album.
Agree 100%
Candy Shop is straight up cringe. Hung Up is too iconic to defeat.
True. Most of her fans forgot that she’s just having FUN playing with her ROOTS in hard candy.
Too reliant on JT and Timba who were over-exposed and she was late to the party working with them. Other than than solid album.
oh
She’s had bops on all her albums, but COADF was her last album that made a cultural impact.
I’m gonna give Hard Candy another chance, after watching this video tho.
😀
I would say it ended with confessions tbh
Hard candy in my opinion was her last best effort.
Side note. I just wish she would preserve her legacy in a much better way. I hate that her legacy is being watered down by her antics.
yes some fans do say that. Maybe one day people will re-appraise it differently and see it more positively.
For me it will always be Ray of Light. I feel separate songs were good. But more importantly the album as a whole together was based in emotions. Majority of the time albums are released to make money and to release singles
Yes ROL felt like more of an artistic expression.
Most will say ‘Confessions’ was her last great album, but I think Rebel Heart was quite strong. It just wasn’t conventional nor trendy. Madonna is an outsider at heart, and she’s sat amongst some of the greatest artistic minds of the century ( a few have even been inside her). I think it’s a wonder she’s been able to translate these artsy bohemian leanings into pop culture and her every effort is admirable. I think what shafts her are the “fans” that don’t get what she’s about. She’s had albums that are so commercially successful she wrangles in people that think she shares the same seat with a Celine Dion or other pop tart, and she’s legitimately an alternative pop artist. That’s why we get these chintzy pop diva fans who are constantly mystified by her Manson level antics when she literally wrote the book. Once you understand what kind of person she is, and what kind of life she’s lead, her body of work makes sense. The level of genius she exercises cannot be overstated. She is our Andy Warhol.
Yes she has the heart & soul of a true artist.
😂😂😂
Her last great album is confessions on a dance floor
It's too bad that the label didn't issue "The Devil Wouldn't Recognize You" as the 2nd single from Hard Candy - it could have been a bit hit. And "Across The Sky" (another duet with Justin Timberlake) should have been kept on the album. Re: "Rebel Heart" - it has some brilliant songs ("Ghosttown," "Joan of Arc," "Rebel Heart (the original demo version), and "Devil Pray") but it also has some clunkers that should have been cut. And unfortunately, she and the label didn't learn the streaming game which dominates the charts now (a sad reality).
I've never heard Across the Sky. I will have to google it.

Excellent analysis as always Jonny! Agree pretty much completely with everything you said regarding Hard Candy being her last consistently good and “Madonna-sounding” album. (I’m in the minority on this but my favorite song from HC is Dance 2Night.) MDNA had its moments but overall was too angry (apparently at Guy Ritchie), Rebel Heart was all over the place and yes, much too long. Cheers!
Thank 😀🙏
I feel like people base the quality of her records on how they sell at this point and it's ridiculous. Rebel Heart and Madame X were not massive hits, but they are still excellent albums. It's almost impossible for a woman on her 50s or 60s to still be dominating the charts. The fact that a song like Ghosttown which is one of Madonnas best singles in recent memory bombed tells you all you need to know. It's sad that society and the industry is so ageist. That being said Madonna will always be one of the biggest icons the world has ever seen. She has probably had the most consistently successful career out of anyone else in music scoring hit after hit after hit for 30 damn years. No matter what she will always be a giant in the industry and I think it's safe to say her Celebration Tour is going to be massive.
Well said 👍
JB 1982 thank you! You said it better than I could
Her Concerts continue to sell out in minutes
Agree with this
As always.. amazing video and analysis ❤
Thank you 😀😀😀🙏🙏🙏
Confessions…. I think after the Live Nation deal, she really made albums as a reason to tour and wasn’t as invested in them…. I think we’re due a ROL style comeback tho….
Wouldn't that be incredible?
MDNA was made while she was busy working on her movie W.E. (Masterpiece was written for it) and her Super Bowl halftime show
Hard Candy was and is fantastic. MDNA definitely has its charms too.
I like Hard Candy. Never got into MDNA though - except Falling Free, one of my favourite Madonna songs ever.
I think when it comes to Madonna because unlike a lot of artist from her generation, before and even after she’s been able to make current music without it sounding like she’s trying to hard, you can tell when she makes her tracks she understands it might not be a hit with her fanbase but she genuinely loves new sounds and new music through time, she’s able to create music that sticks with whatever generation and era it comes out in, however with that said it’s harder for older generations to understand and like her music because not only sonically but it’s not relatable anymore because while everyone grew up she stayed the same mentally, her music is still young, wild and fun like it always has been that tells stories she’s still going through that most have out grown by this time of her original fanbase, she’s been able to have hits on the dance charts continuously, multiple generations of fans that have givin her hits and songs that defined their youth like Holiday, Get into the groove, Papa don’t preach, Like a prayer, Erotica, Take a bow, Nothing really matters, Music, 4 minutes, American Life, Hung up, Gimmie All your luvin, Bitch I’m madonna, and Crave
Confessions. Self-evident. Eras include concerts, and the ideas, her voice, and her dancing hit a peak with confessions.
It was an incredible era!
Hard Candy fan here 🤚🏻
Same 😀
Even the Japanese seems to love/respect Madame X by first pressing the album in SHM-CD format. No other artist got this treatment for their new albums. Usually, SHM-CD is only reserved for reissues/classic albums.
I didn't know that. Thanks for sharing.
i'm just so exited for her upcoming tour
I’m so jealous - I wish I was going.
IMO Madame X is a stellar album and a real return to form. I don't think it gets the shine it deserves, and her promo around that time was NOT good. I'm always just excited to see what she does next 👑
Madame X has some very passionate fans😃
Madame X is truly an awful record, BIG 👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Too much vocorder on MX ! It ruined the album.
A Throw Away album...period.
Yeah, with Hard Candy Madonna definitely started following the trend instead of setting it. If you think about it from that perspective, the sound of Madame X was very original but it's my least favorite album. Regarding the kiss with Drake, I think it was just hurting because she was wearing grills at the time. Another nice video Jonny :)
Totally agree with your take on Hard Candy, that's when she started using mainstream producers a lot more as well.
I noticed that a lot of folks agreed. I loved Madem x. It’ll be interesting to see what she does next!
At least the tour was good
Pls note that’s also says a lot for Bedtime Stories: using trendy producers at the time (Dallas Austin & Babyface). So there’s nothing wrong with following trends, imof.
@@jacksonatic I love her versatile her music is!
YESSSSS justice for Incredible!! I really don't know why it is so underrated, call it guilty pleasure but I really like it

I love it too! It puts me in such a good mood ❤
I love that song!
I like both albums and have given both a good play over the years. I too am really excited to see her in London.
This review seems fair and even handed as always giving honest insights into the highs and lows of the queen of pop! Only was the MDNA tour not the second highest grossing tour by a female artist only behind Madonna's Sticky and sweet tour?
I think you're right - MDNA tour did really well in terms of revenue. I read very mixed reviews of it in the British and Irish media at the time. And I wasn't too sure about it myself.
Can you please do an analysis of Madonna's film career? She wanted to be a movie legend but it never worked out (despite some highs). Your Madonna videos are the best!!!!
I would really like to actually. That's a good idea. I read some really interesting stuff about Who's that Girl recently. An analysis of Madonna's movie career could be a very, very long video though. The Madonna videos are the hardest to do because Madge had done so much and covers so much ground. But I will do it at some point 😃
Again, excellent video!!!
Thank you
I'm a big Madonna fan but I find myself only listening to and buying albums/singles up to Hard Candy. I'll still support her by consuming later music (and especially Finally Enough Love!), but I guess a combination of not really enjoying music from 2010 onwards and therefore the style Madge is making music in kind of means you won't hear much of MDNA, Rebel Heart or Madame X through my speakers.
I think you should try Rebel Heart though - there is some classic Madonna balladry on there
@@jonnyharvey I'll definitely make sure to listen through the full album!
In my Opinion Rebel Heart is her best Album
there are some great songs on it
With a little editing, perhaps
I am waiting for Madonna's return album, like Cher's Believe in 1998.
I strongly believe, that dance music is the key!
Oh god - Believe was like a miracle. It’s such a different world & industry now
Perhaps, but not standard-issue dance like "Believe" was
I agree Jonny, Hard Candy was an amazing album that in my opinion, still kept madonna as a trend setter rather than a follower. Although she did hop on the timbaland and timberlake band wagon, that dose not mean she was not thinking for herself. Madonna has always taken up and coming trends and made them her own since day 1, that’s how she managed so stay around for so long. I think madonna started loosing her own style a little bit during MDNA although I am a huge fan of the album, and from there it was down hill. Thanks for the great Madonna videos as always! ❤ Sending love from Canada ❤️
I love hard candy she hooked up with Timberland, Justin Timberlake and Neptunes. I like the R&B sound. I love the songs incredible, 4 minutes, heartbeat, give it 2 me.
I love those songs too.
Ray of Light was really the pinnacle...the critics finally have to embrace Madonna. Her multiple Grammy awards for ROL cemented for the rest of the world what her fans already knew. After that it was really downhill.
Ray of Light was her peak but Confessions was her last hoorah. Hard Candy was basically just closure to me. Her going back to her original sound.
As a madonna fan I must say I enjoy your research and how you tell a story.. very entertaining ❤❤
thank you 😃🙏
Basically Hard Candy was her last successful international album. It peaked at No.1 in numerous countries. After that era, no other Madonna album had that major hit around the world. She actually reached her peak where you can no longer go further especially for her age in pop culture. She was then classed as too old in the public’s eye.
Yes ageism had a lot to do with it. A 25 year reign is still pretty incredible though
@@jonnyharvey Oh yeah most definitely. I’ve always loved her and what she stood for. I applaud her for keep making music. But to me if you don’t have or not known for strong vocals when you get older. You have to face the fact that you’re going to disappoint fans when on tour or wherever perform live. Need to retire gracefully and let us reminisce back on the greatness. 🤭
please do a video on her MUSIC project… it was a FANTASTIC era and AM STILL PISSED we didn’t get Impressive Instant as a single
I will get to it at some point. I have some info on it.
Love her or hate her - no one can take away her achievements. But the last (nearly 20 years!) have not been on the same level as her first 20 years - it kind of feels like Confessions was “going out on a high” - Confessions really was (and is) an absolute genius piece of work - total 100% pop and dance masterwork. Hard Candy is enjoyable, but just soulless. MDNA is think is maybe slightly underrated - I often wonder if it will have an Erotica moment when retrospectively we’ll look back and appreciate it more. The problem with Rebel heart and Madame X is they’re so damn long…. Kind of bored of why albums need to be 15+ tracks in length. Inevitably there will be filler - and going back to confessions, those 12 tracks were all deserving of a place on that album - it was just the perfect length. But she’s done soooooo much and had her finger on the pulse way more than almost any other artist - but you can’t keep that way. I’m kinda glad she’s starting to look back - and maybe with a bit of retrospect, she’ll rediscover nuggets in the sand that prove her genius once more!
so true - her achievements are unparalleled. She created the blueprint for modern female popstars in the first place.
MadamX is highly underrated
I'm really surprised by how may fans love it - I never got into it.
@@jonnyharvey I'm the next fan of Madame X - this is her best record since American Life with unconventional, uncommercial sound is everything what I admire. The rest of albums are only entertainment, American Life and Madame X is also about society, politics, in my opinion it's something with deeper meaning.
it's interesting how different she comes across on 'hard candy'. i listened to 'music' the other day, and she seems so ENLIGHTENED, in a way, so HONEST, WISE, even. even on uptempo songs like 'runaway lover', she really has something to convey. this is also the case on 'confessions...', i think. but then - 'give it to me'? 'candy shop'? it's very sassy and commercial sounding.
Yeah, it feels like she went back to an 80s mentality and simplicity. There's much more of a sense of maturity on the first three I listened to in full; Ray of Light, Music & American Life.
@@gnu_andrew yeah, that trilogy, probably saved her career.
I think she was editing the documentary about Malawi at the same time as making HC so she just wanted to keep the album light
IMO her last truly great album/era was Confessions.
Confessions was her last great album which was both commercially successful and high quality content.
Hard Cardy and MDNA were good pop albums which followed the trends rather than creating trends as she used to do. They have good tracks but they also included forgettable songs.
Rebel Heart was a big step up. Quality content, an interesting concept about her rebel and romatic sides. There are a few fillers but overall it was great. Her classic melodic vocals came back in tracks like Devil Pray, Ghosttown, Joan Of Arc.
Madame X is an experimental album. It was great to me. It was ironically, what you would expect madonna to do, not doing what you expect her to do. It might not be the chart topper everyone would expect but the quality is there. Unpopular opinion, God Control is one of her best works ever. Im sure, maybe in 5 or 10 years, everyone will brag about how good it was and how underrated it was at its time.
yes maybe you're right. Perhaps I need to give Madame X a few years to appreciate it. I love the visuals, and the idea behind the album and the risks she took - I just couldn't get into the songwriting .
I tend to agree with you. There's definitely a sense of a return to more interesting songs with greater lyrical depth on the last two albums. The big problem with them is there's just too much of them. If Rebel Heart & Madame X had been cut down to about a dozen songs, they'd be much stronger albums. As they are, I haven't listened to them in full since they were released and just tend to cherry pick odd tracks, especially with Madame X. She's meant to be creating an album, not just releasing everything she wrote in the last couple of years. It should be more than the sum of its parts.
I really liked REBEL HEART it did feel like a return to shape for M. But yes there´s no doubt HARD CANDY was her last great era. She dominated the charts, culture and she had the most succesful solo tour for a female artist.
Yeah it was a very different world back then
@@jonnyharvey she is still according to the Guinness Book of World Records the best selling female artist of all time. She’s also getting ready to hit the road with an 80 date tour without Oceana, Asia, and South American dates not even being announced yet. I agree with you that hard candy was her last cohesive album before MDNA and Rebel Heart. But Madame X was very cohesive again, a real concept experimental album with which Madonna surprised her fans again.
For me, I enjoyed the fact that Hard Candy was Madonna beating all of her contemporaries with a non stop string of hits and positive news. Music wise for me- I thought hard candy was one of her weakest. Rebel Heart for me was an interesting split for me. I thought B Im Madonna and Living for Lovd were off the chain! I wasn’t a fan of ghost town. The album had an odd mixture of genres. Surprisingly, Madam X made me become a huge mega fan of hers. I think it’s her best since the 90s but it does remind me of Janet and the buzz around her feedback video. This was good!

Hard (candy) agree. None of the albums post-Warner felt like albums. MDNA and Rebel Heart especially sound like single playlists, which was probably the point but my least favourite approach to a body of work. Madame X felt like a step in the right direction, but I'm still holding out for another bolt of lightning.

Unpopular opinion here: Bedtime Stories. It's not really an era, and it's more like clustered together with Something to Remember and Evita, but it's the last of her albums that I still listen to from start to finish without skipping any song.
Madame X is her second best album ever. Luv to Madonna .💋💋💋💋❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Personally for me American life is her last good album. I love how personal it is, lyrically one of her strongest albums.
American Life does have some very loyal fans 😀
To me it was 'Confessions..." A real sensation.
One of her best
I agree. Hard Candy. Everything was timbaland crazy then and it made sense for the massive Madonna to jump on board with what was current even if it was the tail end. The two main singles were solid, Justin was popular and the 4 minutes title was edgy and a good video. I just felt anything after this, ageism took hold and like you say they don't want her. Gimme all your Lovin should've really been number 1 especially with the features. GGW made no impression really and everything after come to nothing. Living for love and ghost town were masterpieces and still nothing. It's all agesim.
Maybe unpopular opinion but Rebel Heart is My favourite Album of all time
While it's not mine, I understand why you feel that way. It does have some great songs that could have been huge hits had radio cared.
Rebel Heart and Madame X were superb albums that no other artist could have released and a return to form after Hard Candy and MDNA.
I do think Rebel Heart was a huge step up after MDNA
Rebel Heart was an enjoyable album but I couldn't get into Madame X. But I will say it's better than MDNA.
Hard candy deep in my heart
for me Rebel Heart is one of her best albums, i really enjoy the variety of sounds and omg demos like queen, revolution or never let you go were missed in the final cut
I never heard those demos- I really want to listen to them now
How about the original Heartbreak City demo? Was amazing, wish she didn't change it.
I only liked MDNA of those three albums, I couldn’t even bare to continue listening to Rebel heart! I know MDNA sounds very commercial, but for me, it feels like a much superior version of America life! However, after listening to your video, I will give Rebel heart another chance and try to listen to it
Thanks for sharing - yes that’s cool. Everyone hears music differently. Rebel Heart has some great quality songwriting 😀
@@jonnyharvey but of course, I read about that online, but then, as you know, it is melody and the beat that attracts first before lyrics. However, as I said, just because I love you I’m going to listen to the album again, by the way, do you remember your video about Christina Aguilera bionic, I loved certain songs in the album but not all of it, but after your video, I went and I listen to it, and you were absolutely right, it was ahead of its time

@@PungiFungi I personally never heard the leaked demo versions. But as I said, I will give it a try to listen to it again.
Madonna’s last great album was Confessions On a Dance Floor in my opinion. I agree there’s no such thing as a bad Madonna album and all four post Confessions albums have some great tracks, but equally they’ve all felt a bit directionless with some very poor filler tracks (I’m looking at you Spanish Lessons and S.E.X.). They’ve also felt lacking in cohesiveness as you pointed out. Plus, Madge darling, it’s definitely time to ditch the autotune and singing with grills. That said, I still worship at the Church of Madonna.
Does she really sing in the studio with 'grills' in?
@@jonnyharvey I’m not sure Jonny but some of her vocals on MX certainly sound like it.
ray of light
4 minutes is a banger!!
I really like it - a lot of fans don’t
I agree with RossBaby91. Although I think Erotica is the best of her albums, I listen to Confessions the most. It was the last time she was relevant. This isn't her fault. It's standard for pop acts to reach their relevant peak at 47 years of age. For example, Mick Jagger was for the most part 47 during the Steel Wheel era and Jay-Z was 47 during the 4:44 era.
Yes it’s an ageist & sexist society
Confessions on the Dance Floor, it is simply perfect, Hard Candy is nice but the Tour Álbum sounds better than the disc tracks so...
I don't think I've ever properly listened to the Sticky and Sweet tour album - I do have it somewhere.
Agreed 100% with everything you've said.
Oh thanks 😀 I was mentally preparing myself for some annoyed Madonna fans 😱
“Hard Candy” was decent; however, it was the beginning of the end for Madonna’s trailblazing artistry. She became a follower of the latest trend in music.
I suppose nobody can reign forever ☹️
I will add my comment because I deserve it being an original Madonna fan I think her first two albums are my number one's because she took all my money happiness and memories of a life time
Madame X is the answer amazing album, visuals, tour
I did like the visuals and the videos.
You really said it best. Coming out with hard candy with its production being a bit dated, considering the fact that Gwen and Nelly been dominating in the early 2000’s with this style of music almost but not really shot herself in the foot for what she is know for being the queen of reinvention
I suppose you can’t win them all. She did lead the way for 25 years so……..
Who thinks Madonna can get her act together and produce something great again??
IMHO she has nothing left to prove
@@jonnyharvey I think that's fair if she doesn't release another album.
However, if she does release another one if great quality and good visuals it could be wonderful
Judging by her envious vault of demos, alternate versions, b-sides & outtakes, a BIG YES!!!
Madonna has been producing great music. MX is stellar.
@@jonnyharvey It's not about proving anything, but releasing great music; although I would disagree with the original comment, in that she has released great music. Madonna has NOTHING to prove with regard to trying to remain on top with sales. Since she is still a viable artist, she needs to keep releasing great original music. I'm positive she would NEVER want to fade into that older type of artist who releases albums of standards. Oh God forbid. LOL
Confessions was her last best album. Period.
I like Madame X better than hard candy or any other albums since confessions. I wish you spent more time on it.
Yes I'm surprised by how many fans have said that in the comments. I never got into Madame X at all. The only song I like is 'Crave'
Will you be doing an episode just about the album erotica?
yes I will definitely do it at some point
@@jonnyharvey And when you do, remember to search UA-cam for EROTICA DEMOS، So that you can see how the final result changed from the demos
Yes! "Incredible" is a good song! #justice4incredible
“just one of those things, when everything goes incredible” 😀
For me Rebel Heart is so much better than Hard Candy.
Hard Candy feels like she was trying too hard, it feels almost fake. Also the production is very lacking, it sounds incomplete, more like a demo rather than a finished product. And her voice doesn't match the genre at all. She doesn't sound like her voice belongs with that style of music.
Rebel Heart on the other doesn't sound as forced as Hard Candy. It sounds a lot more natural, more honest and real. The music too sounds much better produced, more polished. And finally her vocal performance in Rebel Heart is one of her greatest, ever. She sounds incredible. And lyrically is so much more interesting too.
I really enjoyed Madame X. It's my favorite Madonna album along with Ray of Light.
Madame X does seem to have a very loyal following.
Madame X is her best record to date ... Excellent album!
A lot of fans do seem to like it
Madame X was an objectively great album, ask any actual music critic or open minded person
I’d consider myself pretty open minded - I loved pretty much all her records, except MDNA & Madame X
This is an overall a great video.❤
Thank you 😀
COADF was indeed the last great album of her's. Things went down when she decided to follow the trends. This resulted in "Hard Candy", essentially a Timbaland's album with Madonna on vocals, and I agree with you on the following albums, they just didn't appeal to the fanbase, and were largely ignored by those whose attention she wanted to attract. Madame X was a good album, largely thanks to Mirwais Ahmadzai and the Portuguese and Spanish motives, but it was too late, and the disastrous tour didn't help either, but it was more Madonna album than all post-COADF albums combined.
Rebel heart is my favorite álbum all time
there are some great songs on there.
I'd argue Rebel Heart could've been a hugely successful album and era if not for the way MDNA "ruined" her image to the masses. It's such an amazing album and could've been as big as Confessions imo.
Yes this is a good point - there was a lot of bad PR around the time of MDNA
I had no problem with Hard Candy, MDNA, Rebel Heart, or Madame X - They all are different, as I expect Madonna to be. However, I did feel that Hard Candy can have easily came out in 1997 - when Timbaland and Timberlake were so new and fresh. I'm not saying it's much of a "dated" sounding album, but it felt like she rode the wave 11 years later, when she will have been more pioneering. That's as far as sound, but I did enjoy the album, as I played it every day for a few years. As far as the image....I feel like the tour look with the bangs needed to be the main look to be seen more of a reinvention, so to speak. The Hard Candy album cover - her hair is still having the feathered look, as Confessions had on top, just sloppier, and the outfit was okay, but I feel the Sticky And Sweet Tourbook and the last part of the tour image with the bangs captured what will have made the Hard Candy image feel more fresh and new. Only having two videos, I felt hurt a lot, too. In fact, the lack of videos in an ever so growing platform of youtube NEEDED more videos and video presence. The Give It 2 Me video was disappointing to me, because it felt sloppy and her image looked too much like she did in 2000 when she was promoting The next Best Thing. Songs that deserved videos were The Beat Goes On, Candy Shop, Heartbeat, and I don;t think the Miles Away was a good showcase of her tour for a "live" video. As for Rebel Heart, I feel the same thing was happening with the sounds and images. The sounds, while i enjoyed the album, and again, played it for years, I felt like they reminded me of her past albums, which is perfectly okay. I heard Rebel Heart was supposed to be two albums, Rebel, and Heart, which I think was the better idea. I don;t know how she was saying the record company didn;t want her doing that, when she is what I think is supposed to be powerful, she will have done it anyway, and when I did have the songs, I actually made my own "rebel" album, and "heart" album, and I made it make sense to me. Her image - again, her tour image was a lot stronger than her album image. Her album image was too 1991/1992/1994 to me. She is supposed to have a brand new image, I know she was paying homage to a Monroe photoshoot, but maybe if she did it exaclty - like having her hair all be to the side like Monroe did, it will have at least looked somewhat different from what we have seen before. Her tour look in the second and third section felt like the look that needed to dominate the Rebel Heart image - the bouffant victory roll from the second section with the houndstooth clothes felt very fresh. The third section with the side braid and the gypsy outfit was VERY becoming and memorable, too. Again, three videos from an album of so many songs was not enough. That album can easily have spawned 8 or 9 videos. Fortunately, she performed a lot of the songs on tour, but I feel like the lack of videos from Hard Candy (2), MDNA (3), Rebel Heart (3) - hurt her, as she is the video queen, and when she does make an effort, she makes incredible videos.
Definitely confession and a dance floor imo.
A lot of the comments are saying that
Having written and making as many videos as she had . And having her creativities impacted the music world in such phenomenon, I think it’ll be fine if she doesn’t have another hit songs . And I don’t think she cares what people think
Madame X is one of her all time best. MDNA was the low point. Hard Candy wasnt inspired by any sense, but actually stands the test of time.
I didn't realise how many people love Madame X
