How Madonna became the biggest pop star on the planet

- In 1986 Madonna released her classic third album True Blue, which would go on to sell 25 million copies internationally making it the biggest of her career (just behind her first greatest hits, the Immaculate Collection) and positioning her among the ranks of superstars such as Prince and Michael Jackson. It broke all kinds of records around the world, became the biggest selling album of 1986 in the UK and is widely considered by many fans to be her greatest era.
So just how did Madonna make such a success of True Blue? How did she meet Patrick Leonard and start working with him? Why were Warner execs so anxious about releasing Live to Tell? Who originally wrote ‘Papa don’t Preach’ and 'Open your Heart' and how did those songs find their way to Madonna? Which major singer said no to 'La Isla Bonita?' Why did one of her managers stop working with her around this time? So many questions, let’s find out.

True blue album was the first album by an American artist ever to debut at #1 in the UK and True blue sold over 10M copies in Europe . It spent 34 weeks at #1 on the European album sales chart , no artist has beat this
thanks for this. Amazing stats
Her best work along with Ray of light
Whilst the album isn’t my favourite, the album cover is simply iconic.
Damn right - I would need to do a separate video on the album visuals
@@jonnyharvey you really should, to this day I'm still obsessed with the blue, silver hues used for this album concept. The photo-shoot was clearly a throwback to Marilyn Monroe iconic photo shoot. Also the 50s look with songs like White Heat with James Cagney and True Blue with the 50's song style. It's clearly a 50's homage album, which I love.
The extra bass she put on her records gave her a leg up. A lot of 80s pop lacks bass - records couldn’t handle much bass, it would shake the needle off the record. But Madonna’s records boom with bass - especially papa don’t preach and open your heart. The audience must’ve been blown away by the sonic landscape of those songs.
I’m a pretty big fan of her bedtime story work onward, very ahead of her time with sounds and meanings. I’m 25 and people just don’t get it
@@CraigsListM4M they will get it eventually.
Yeah, today a lot of 80s pop sounds echoey and empty to me. I totally LOVED it at the time, though, haha!
Thanks for this. One of the reasons why so much of her music has stood the test of time.
True Blue is the blueprint pop albums like the fame, teenage dream, 1989 etc
True Blue is my all time favorite Madonna album, I've listened to it thousands of times by now. It truly was the album where she the most optimistic as you said and felt like it the era where she truly was elevated above the rest and was solidified as a true icon ❤
🤔
The optimism might be because she was in love. She was dating and/or married to Sean Penn during the True Blue era. As the video states. She’s said Sean was the love of her life.
I'm lucky enough to say I was alive and remember every madonna album come out. This was epic!!
😀
@Here's Jonny the scandal!! Teen pregnancy sent the world off its face when papa don't preach came out
You live to tell😊
@@sashabertold3731 touche babe! TOTALLY! So proud to Live to Tell how this all went down. Controversy from the syart

Not keen on her new stuff at all, she needs to just enjoy her millions she earned it...
@@danzel8604 She still puts out great content if you're open minded enough to appreciate it. I personally love that she's still making music and still really enjoy her output.
@@Nabhan82 good for you & believe me my mind is fully open.....to good music that I appreciate..
Thank you so much for your Madonna content. I’m fairly new to her but I understand the impact she has had in music and pop culture. I love her and she has moved to the top of my pyramid of pop queens.
Never too late to become a Madonna fan ;)
I’ve been a fan since 2006 in high school and there’s STILL so much I’ve yet to discover. She’s my favorite artist of all time. My life inspiration. Enjoy the ride!
She should be at the top of everyones pyramid, she’s literally one of the best pop artists alive. It’s criminal how underrated she is, and I’m not being facetious. When she passes her accolades will be thru the roof. Her ideas, her collabs, her ability to catch early trends, her artistic integrity and fearlessness, the beguiling power to capture the publics attention at every step of her career be it artistically or individually. There hasn’t been a pop girlie yet that can come close to the work she’s created, they’d be too scared lol
@elm1230 Not really. Everybody has different music tastes. And the fact that Madonna is more of an entertainer than a singer makes a valid reason for many to not have her as their top fav artist.
@@ankitapandey3703 I would say she’s an artist first and foremost who happens to sing and entertain 💯
I remember when Papa Don't Preach came out and radio DJ's would often start their show with it, or play it straight after news bulletins as those strings provide an arresting opener that would catch the ear. Very different to anything else that was on the radio time at the time.
Madonna and her producers skill is to make simple pop songs sound unusual and interesting. On paper, Live to Tell is quite straightforward but they manage to build it into something that ends up being beautifully majestic and powerful.
thanks for this - really interesting insight 😀I love the opening strings to Papa Don't Preach. Yes Steven Bray, Patrick Leonard and Madonna are all such talented producers.
Yes! That opening to PDP is absolute brilliance. So beautifully done, then the driving beats of the song follow right after. It really deserved to be critically recognized so much more than it was.
Best Madonna content ever. And your voice really is captivating to hear lol
Thank you 😀🙏 I’m always in such a rush to get it done, I thought it sounds can shouty at times 😂
Madonna’s musical journey throughout the decades has been one that changes from album to album, and song to song. I’ve always loved her references in both her music and fashion/style.
True Blue deserve more praise than it gets. Almost like a thriller or bad album, just because she is a woman, it gets less attention.
I heard the song 'Spotlight' was supposed to be on this album too but Madonna found it too similar to 'Holiday'. Sad because I adore Spotlight too
Yes me too - love Spotlight ❤️
You did it again Jonny. Just awesome...!
Thank you God for allow me to live in the 80's. I was a little kid at that time and everybody was obsessed with Madonna. No internet, no streaming, only pure hard work and talent. She is a genious...!
Greetings from Buenos Aires...!
Thank you for your comments 😀🙏 You couldn’t stream or download a single, you had to go a record store & actually pay money to get. IMHO it was a different kind of success
The album that changed my life
Last week I watched her live for the very first time. The crowd went wild when "La Isla Bonita" came out. I wasn't alive when "True Blue" was released but I'm old enough to remember watching videos from this era on VH1.
I'm so jealous - I would've loved to have seen the Celebration tour (it didn't come to Ireland). Looking forward to seeing the official edited version.
I love White Heat! It should have been released as a single!
I do too - I don’t get people being so negative about it. I think it’s a great pop song.
Where's The Party is one of my faves from True Blue that should've gotten a single treatment.
@@Gobble_de_Goop Yes. That 1 also. Even Causing a Commotion was released as a single!
Another fantastic video. You are my favourite UA-camr. I find your work fascinating. I would love to see you interviewing artists one day, I think you would be very good at that because you do such a great job of researching and understanding the craft of songwriting and all the behind the scenes work that goes into making an album. Love your work!
Thank you so much 😀🙏
I would love to interview artists about their songwriting & creative process. That would be so cool.
@@jonnyharvey I hope this happens! You’d do such a great job. In the meantime, keep up the amazing work with these clips, they are fantastic!!!
A lot of the younger crowd today truly don't appreciate that most of their favorite artists are walking the road that Madonna paved.
She was the blueprint for the modern female pop star
The best selling international album here in Brazil! ❤️
Brazilians have great taste 😀
I absolutely love your channel! Thank you for always posting videos about Queen Madonna! ❤️👑
Thank you 😀🙏
I'm watching this video again a year after I first watched it. I can't say this enough. Madonna was "robbed" of so much critical recognition in the early part of her career. Papa Don't Preach, Live to Tell, and Like A Prayer should have been up for every critical award for Song and Record of the Year and the albums should have nominated for Album of the Year. But, back then, everyone but the buying public shied away from the controversies. It wasn't until Ray of LIght and Music did she get this critical recognition. While, yes, Madonna conquered the world with her songs, albums, and tours, I can only hope that one day, her complete body of work will get the appreciation that she deserves as a songwriter and producer. She truly has some of the most iconic and legendary pop songs that forever live in so many people's minds.
I agree. Completely ridiculous Like A Prayer didn’t get at least one Grammy - for Song of the Year anyway. Live to Tell should also have been recognised for its quality songwriting. But the Grammys was (and still is) dominated by white straight blokes and they prefer rock, acoustic, folk. And Madonna wasn’t taken seriously for years.
Madonna will forever be my fantasy!! Her face is perfect and she is utterly spellbinding. Have had the pleasure of being front row of some of her best performances and there's no other like her. True Blue id brilliant and I love driving on the coast with the top down & full blast. The greatest artist of many generations.
Madonna was just everywhere. I learned English because of her.
Oh that's nice to hear. Entertaining, inspiring AND educational 😂
When the video for Papa Don't Preach dropped on MTV it was an instant classic. I think it was that point where we all knew she was serious, and would be around for a while.
Yep when she was able to follow up LAV you knew she meant business
Thank you again for another amazing Madonna video. As a fan of Madonna I always look forward to you your research and insight. This is going to be a long post from me. I still have the original vinyl of True Blue and the original 12" picture disc of True Blue single.
Live Aid: Love Makes the World Go Round and Where's the Party - red hair, beginning to change her look, original unreleased songs in front of the biggest audience ever, while others were doing their current hits or greatest hits? WOW.
Live to Tell: say what? A ballad showcasing Madonna's lower register as the *lead* single? Yes, she made it work (and she kept her clothes very much on in the video).
Papa Don't Preach - a classical string intro? Confusing on pop radio. Madonna (unmarried in the song) singing "I'm gonna keep my baby" - confusing the Catholic Church and Christian right no end - and a woman called Madonna who is a Catholic singing about having a baby out of wedlock...perfect pop tune, genius marketing and the iconic "Italians Do it Better" T-shirt.
The absolute obsession with Madonna's physique, from soft/curvy to taught and muscled.
True Blue - innocence and love - in retrospect - despite all the rumours of Sean Penn being abusive at the time, he still seems to be the love of her life, even more than Guy Ritchie.
Open Your Heart video yet again, controversy - the prototype for the conical bra/corset - the tassels on the outfit, not just set at a peep show, not just with homoerotic imagery but with a young underage boy in the video watching her- she nearly didn't get away with that but for the end when she ruffles his hair. I am sure Felix's part would not be in that video if it was made today.
La Isla Bonita - gorgeous track - she plays two types of Spanish girl - every Spanish stereotype in the video - but it works.
Jimmy Jimmy and White Heat - fantastic album tracks
A perfect pop album - each track a gem.... not a concept album - and ironically, given how commercially successful the album was it seems to be overlooked by many, including Madonna fans. As said, by others the Grammys were ignoring her in favour of Cyndi Lauper (who I also love), Madonna was just "too much" for them.
PS - Ain't No Big Deal - the B side to Papa Don't Preach and Each Time You Break My Heart - the song she wrote/gave to Nick Kamen (RIP) amazing songs from this era too
thank you 😀🙏
Loved this. Do one on the videos for this album!
Thank you😀🙏
The best selling female musical recording artist in history (still) 🙌
Wow! I can´t thank you enough for this video. The True Blue-Madonna is my personal ULTIMATE Madonna. I became fan of hers in Summer of 1986. I was a tiny 11 year old boy then and I fell in love with this 28-year-old pop-lady when I saw "Papa don`t preach" musicvideo. What a Blast! I remember hanging Madonna posters on my walls and started collecting clippings and merchandise stuff. Now, 48 years old I have to say, that I still love listening to True Blue. It´s still a great poprecord. And the picture of the cover ist the best photo ever taken by her. Herb Ritts did an awesome job with that cover.
Thank you 😀🙏
This video is really good! Over the years, True Blue has become my favorite Madonna. Over the years, it's message video and lyrics have aged quite well. It's also tightly rapped like Janet's control. Both ladies earlier work seemed a lot different.
thank you 😀
Thank you for another great video, it had a lot of info that I didn’t now.
La Isla Bonita is my earliest memory of madonna when I was a kid, and it was the first Madonna song that I loved, it made me love Madonna that time.

From hit to hit in that era . True Blue is legend album . White Heat is neglected as a single.

Legendary album and era....Live to tell is so amazing, however I find some of the album alittle middle of the road and safe. Imo she has made so many more creative and innovative albums. Still it's very important to her growth
No it’s not her most musically adventurous album but the songs are really solid on it.

This is amazing. Can you please do "Like a Prayer" next? Keep up the fantastic work.
Thank you 😀Yes I’ve got ideas and research collected for ‘like a prayer’. But Madonna videos take me a really long time to do. It’s so hard to do her ‘eras’ justice in a ten minute video. She’s done so much work so there’s always a lot of information to work through.

Great album. My favorite after The Immaculate Collection
So it’s your favourite Madonna studio album then 😀
And don't forget, True Blue was #1, in the European charts for 30+ weeks!!
good point - thanks for adding that.
@@jonnyharvey I think it made history in all charts worldwide
Well, another pressure Madge had on her shoulder was to push Cyndi out of the way. Before True Blue both Madonna and Cyndi were the top female solo artist. With She's So Unusual, Cyndi had already toured (successfully) the entire world, placed 5 songs into the top 40 and competed in major Grammy categories. But Cyndi's label and management took too long between Unusual and True Colors ... perfect opportunity for Madonna to enjoy the success of Like a Virgin and have the label market her everywhere and churn out True Blue soon afterwards. Cyndi's True Colors could have been managed better and could have stayed the course alongside True Blue. It shouldn't be a shock that Madonna knew how to use T&A to her advantage and sell it as an empowering tool and add that she was controversial. Cyndi was neither ... and that doesn't sell as well in the video era. Cyndi still broke barriers and raised the bar just as heavy as Madonna did; Madonna just sold it better.
What’s T&A? Yes Madonna & Cyndi are quite different really. Cyndi didn’t want to be immortal.
@@jonnyharvey I know it's crude, but T&A = tits and ass.
@@jonnyharvey literally “t!ts and ass” but the expression means marketing using sex
Reality is Cindy didn't evolve and True Colors is less quality than she so unusual. when will the tired Lauper fans stop crying over a could've that NEVER COULD. Madonna kept evolving while Lauper kept giving less and less quality. END OF STORY
This is still my favourite album from her - perfect ❤ it’s because of this album ( my brother gave it to me on cassette) and it began my decades long love affair with her ❤
It's a really solid record 😀
True Blue and Like A Prayer should be considered THE most iconic 1-2 punch in pop music. But LAP was so underrated, it was a crime. True Blue is definitely one of the greatest and significant pop albums by any artist, much less female pop artists.
two classic albums
Man what I would’ve given to live during Madonna’s peak.
Too bad I was born in the 90s 😩
i get it! i was there. it was good times!
Madonna completely changed pop
Music. Before her, women were always considered lesser stars and couldn’t keep up with men in either sales or tours. After her there are now countless females who are equal billing or more to men. And both male and female stars copy her template of reinvention and showmanship.
that was great
😀
All of her albums are unique!!! She is the only one big super star
she is a bonafide legend.
She got where she is because she's so clever. There are better singers and musicians but she is so damn clever. You see it more in her tours than her albums, no one puts on a show even close to Madonna and she's always miles ahead. No wonder Celebration tour has sold so well, Madonna dominates with her wit and intelligence.
So true - Madonna outsmarted everyone

I love the 80s and 90s Madonna, but Madonna didn’t have to experience with the Racism that other black artists had to deal with from MTV in the early 80s. MTV was a major endorsement of Madonna and her music back in the day when they really weren’t promoting black music on an all rock station. Nevertheless, Madonna’s catalog is really sick: Crazy for you, Borderline, Angel, La Isla Bonita, Cherish, Like a Virgin, Causing a Commotion, Holiday, Get into the groove, Lucky Star are just a few of my favorites from her.
That’s true - that’s a good point. She had other challenges though - being a woman in such male dominated industry was tough
yet Madonna unlike Michael or Janet or Whiney addressed racism, teenage pregnancy, religion, female empowerment. if your fave black artist didn't step her pvssy up has nothing to do with RACE. FOH

Oh good - as long as people detect the sarcasm. Phew!
According to Danny Aiello the video for Papa Don't Preach is a piece of crap?? Hardly, it's a true classic; the song and filmed scenes go together perfectly and Madonna is very believable as a young girl who accidentally gets pregnant. Aiello himself plays his role as her dad really well, it's all so authentic. And I love the outdoor scenes, shot in New Jersey I think. One of my (many) absolute favorite videos by Madonna since I first saw it in 1986!
Oh I think he was wrong on that one - it’s a classic
I was literally about half-way through the video until I realized "Madge' wasn't another person but a nickname for Madonna. You gotta let the young ones know that at the beginning of the video 😂

In the 80s and 90s, Madonna had the best collaborators like Patrick Leonard, Stephen Bray, Jellybean, Shep Pettibone, William Orbit, Babyface, Dallas Austin, Nelle Hooper. With such team she could go no wrong. Plus she was hard working and interested in making great concept albums. Ever since 2010's, she had mediocre collaborators, and been making records like "business as usual". Madame X was her last concept album, but it failed to recapture the magic of her best. Some great moments among general dullness. She can't even pronounce words with her grillz on. She kind of lost it.
She has nothing left to prove - she's a trailblazer. She was at the top of her game for 25 years - nothing is forever.
that lucky star truly got the spotlight

Great stuff. However Michael Jackson was far from a 'small time' singer in the 80s though as he had already released Off the Wall at that time and had the success of The Jackson 5 and The Jacksons behind him.

@@jimmyblanco7525 how do you mean? I love Janet
Oldonna only competition was Janet
correct me if i’m wrong but this woman was around her peak during michael jackson’s career so how could she be the biggest when he’s around
well True Blue was released in 1986 and MJ was relatively quiet that year until 1987 when he released bad. So Madonna kinda was the biggest popstar for a short while. It's not meant to be taken all that seriously - its just a title for a video.
Can you make ray of light/erotica album ..please 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Hello - I did one on Ray of light ua-cam.com/video/sJvxiND3WB0/v-deo.html
I remember Ron Weisner. It seems he doesn't like a woman who asserts herself like how men do. Madonna knew what she wanted and she wasn't taking no for an answer. She has seen what women are relegated to and she would not have it. Which is why Freddie was perfect for her. It seems like Ron was threatened by a woman who stands up on her own. The artists he managed seemed more demanding and had more dirty baggage than Madonna and he was ok with that. It's more of his misogynistic take, honestly.
Madonna was never bigger than Michael Jackson in the 80s or early 90s. By the time she surpassed him - I'd say Ray of Light era - he already had a 30 year career....
Well Michael didn’t have an album out in 86 so you could say Madonna was bigger for a short while. Overall Michael was bigger though
@@jonnyharvey Good point.

Pls make video on Mariah's "Music box" Mariah was biggest in that
Oh that’s a good idea
YAWN
To call her the biggest pop star on the planet is a stretch, though. Numbers don’t lie, and that implies that she outsold all her peers (which is FAR from the truth) she wasn’t the biggest seller at any point in her career. Female, yes, but not overall.
well in 1986 she pretty much was. She had a bigger cultural impact than any other popstar at the time. Michael Jackson's 'Bad' didn't come out till the following year. Can you give me an example of who was bigger, to support your point?
Whitney's debut and True Blue sold about the same worldwide in the end. Is that who you were thinking of?
@@jonnyharvey So you’re saying fame stops the years an artist doesn’t release anything, and is only there when they do? To measure her fame more accurately you can still use the albums that previously came out. Say Purple Rain and Thriller came out a few years prior, yet those albums sold more than True Blue; the fame they attained from those albums didn’t magically disappear in 86. Especially given that Bad (87) also sold way more. Not releasing anything that specific year doesn’t mean they still weren’t the biggest thing, especially MJ. Though, yes, even Whitney was neck on neck. So the statement just isn’t that accurate
@@elnorey my thumbnail isn't meant to be taken that seriously. And obviously my claim is based on the time period the album was released 1986-87 or so. I'm not saying she was the biggest popstar for the whole of the 80s (but she was one of them)
@@elnorey by 1986 Madonna was the biggest star in the planet period, she surpassed Jacko to the point he approached her for a duet in hopes of getting some clout by 1991. and no amount of tears will change that NEXT
2nd biggest. She wasn't bigger than Michael nor was Prince. But Madonna was my fav but she wasn't as big as Michael
Well Michael didn’t have an album out in 86, the year of True Blue so technically you could say Madonna was the biggest popstar for a short while.
by 1989 Madonna surpassed Michael , MTV chose her as Artist of the decade . and Michael had to approach her to do a collab. GET IT RIGHT NEXT TIME
