Some people are telling you wrong things about the meaning of Sawstika. Pls don’t believe the information you get without researching about it. Swastika isn’t a symbol for “peace” anywhere, let alone India or China (its birthplace). The symbol has 2 forms: right hand form (clockwise) 卐 and left hand form 卍. The right hand form 卐 is a symbol for good fortune & prosperity, sometimes well being in Hinduism, because it represents the Sun. The left hand 卍 form on the other hand represent the moon in India & Kali worshippers use that symbol as something like “power”. However, in China & Japan (Manji) - the left hand form 卍 of swastika is just a symbol of Buddihm. For Hitler & Nazi Germany, the right hand form 卐 (45 ° angle) was used to symbolize the true Aryan race or Germans & the “power of the pure (blue) blood”. So, “peace” has nothing to do with it; either its “prosperity” or its “power”.
Thank you for appreciating our cinema, many Americans just outright refuse to watch Bollywood films because of the cultural differences, not wanting to read the subtitles or superiority complex. Swastika is not a Nazi symbol and no matter how it is twisted by the western world it would never be a Nazi symbol. If you ever get a chance to visit India, you would see Swastika painted at the entrance of many homes and temples. We don’t want our symbol to be associated with the genocide of the Jews. India has never persecuted Jews in fact we have protected them. It’s scary that western media creates false narrative about Indian culture and Hindu religion. Polygamy isn’t allowed in Hindus as well, only Muslims practice polygamy.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout No problem, there are two Swastikas drawn on both sides of the front door of my house and we aren't Nazi supporter or endorse antisemitism. We are just following our culture. I hope more Americans educate themselves about the real meaning of Swastika. Perhaps the Jews in India know more about Swastika than the western world. India has very good relations with Israel. And they have never misinterpreted our holy symbol which was stolen and appropriated by the Nazis.
It is well known that India has always supported Jews those who don't know this are not qualified to talk about international affairs or anything related to this.
The swastica debacle really isn’t an issue but I guess it just wouldn’t make any sense to a non-Indian. Imagine a terrorist organisation were to just adopt the Cross, Christians wouldn’t just abandon the Cross because of something completely out of their control right. That’s how i’d explain it best
I certainly didn’t mean to any way suggest you should abandon it. Reading the comments it’s really illuminated to Me how horrifying it is the symbol has been completed tarnished to the west by the nazis appropriation of it
@SeanChandlerTalksAbout Swastik is a popular hindu symbol from ages before Nazis which translates to well being, it's almost on the same level of sacredness to OM. Unfortunately, Hitler used it to gain popularity, rotating it
@@SeanChandlerTalksAboutNazi symbol is not Swastika but Hooked Cross, the Evangelical Christian’s Cross. The hooked cross is on Christians graves in Europe. The Allied forces sold it of as Sawastika because it looks similar. Swastika has 16 arms and 4 dots with each one having a meaning. Unfortunately Christian west will not correct it even in the age of information because that they are afraid it will bring a bad name to Christianity.
Swastika is an Indian symbol.. while Nazi's symbol is called hakenkreuz (Hooked-cross).. but later the Cristian world though it would tarnish thier image and started spreading the symbol's name as swastika.. The Hooked Cross symbols are carved on many church walls and even available till date.. even on Pope's church..
I wrote almost same comment without seeing yours """Hitler used crooked cross (literal translation of hakenkreuz). But Christian English translator translated that word as Swastika (definitely with malice)."""
Hooked-cross....😂.... Hitler admired aryan culture and religion (hinduism)... He believed aryans are the best in humans, so he sent some of his scientists to tibet and northern india for trace aryan race.
5:11 Meeleee combat scene is very culturally rooted. The song is "Arjan Vailly", traditionally a Punjabi folk song (ofc with bass and modern production bells and whistles) which was sung by Sikhi Panth of Sanatan Dharm warriors for encouragement when they fought in war. The Axe fighting is also not your Native American axe fighting but actually Gatak, a Punjabi martial arts. Even Abrar's character is rooted - the song in his entry in his wedding is a Persian song playwd at weddings, his coat and necklace have turkish motifs (these two cultures are the biggest influence on islamic colonizers of Bharat). Even the fight song at the end, the style of music is mourning song sin Punjabi funerals. Even Punjabi muslims have retained this mourning tradition (hence you find extra lines in the movie missing from the album version, where he says "Abba" (muslim word for father) instead of "Papa" (anglo word that most indians use in post-colonial bharat)) The one Brother who stayed back in Punjab - tradition in Punjab is such that the oldest son of a Hindu family was dedicated to fighting the Mughal colonizers - hence they took the path of the student (ie Sikhi Panth). Thats why the brother stayed back - to fight and protect his family. Theres a lot of subtle pan-Bharatian references like this in the movie that gave it a very rooted identity. Most people got pissed that it "demonizes" one community or another - but it doesn't. It just shows them all as they are. No hate and no love. Just honest depiction of all cultures, and the larger than life individuals that inhabit those cultures. Its all really cool! This is finally truly "indic" cinema. British nay have left us movie halls to make movies according to their tastes and not ours. But now, we finally have movies for OUR tastes first and foremost. This is the self respect of a rising Bharat! (Cultural relevance of the movie explained ig). EDIT: Swastika is a VERY sacred symbol. Not just for Hindus but also for Japanese, Mongols (Shinto, Tengri) etc many people globally. To associate it with only Nazis is to strip people of their identity. It's like if we associate a cross with the Weeknd alone and nothing else. Its just funny to us. The movie portrays Swastika as a symbol of "purity" in this case. Also, Muslims do polygamy. Thats accurate but Muslims got pissed for the movie being "brutally honest" about it. Same woth the portrayal of the Nikkah Halala in the credit scene. I think the Muslim side of the family will be the protagonist next time around. So its not against Muslims. It's just honest about them. Thats why we didnt see them much in this part of the movie.
Interesting. Thanks so much for the clarification and context. It's very helpful. Read many of the comments here has given me a lot of perspective on the swastika.
Movie is awesome, I watched it last night and i woke up early morning now to watch 7am show again..and yeah Swastika has nothing to do with Hitler's sign ..this is slightly a different symbol if u observe closely..it is used since ancient Indian cultures to represent well being and blessings, we draw it whenever we wish for goodluck when we begin something like construction, writing exams, wishing someone goodluck etc
Lots of scenes r copied from The legend of Maula Jatt. Zee TV bought its Indian rights and then got it banned so Pakistan can't release it on OTT until it get released in India. Such cunning people.
Hitler didn't use swastika Hitler sign was hekencruise, which is a Christian sign little similar to swastika. Please Google for info and never refer hitlar symbol as swastika.

the controversy regarding this film was that the director, sandeep reddy vanga who even in his last films has been constantly accused of glorifying abuse and misogyny and this took it to a very different level so yeah not everyone’s movie out here in india
And who decides he glorifies. He literally shows him as a self destructive person who pisses his pants is this is the glorification. Where is misogyny in the movie. He may be toxic not misogynist.
@@Ihateanimalloverstheyareshit Just because he pissed his pants after doing drugs does not mean his character was not glorified. The main problem with the film was that his character did not go through any development and he was still the same asshole towards the end, yet he got the girl because Preeti is the dumbest character ever written. Bohot movies me aise characters dikhaye hai but Kabir ka koi development nahi hota hai aur ladki leke nikal jata hai.
Bohut movies me aisa hota hai but kabir Singh me aisa nahi hai matlab apko sari movies ek jesi chahiye? Not every person in real life necessarily goes through transformation. So why not enjoy the movies as mode of entertainment and stop judging everything.

From what I think the director intentionally named the company Swastik Steel to make clarity in the difference between the Hindu Swastik and what nazis uses and also to make a statement because sometimes some media portals wrongly accuse Hindus as nazis followers as we worship Swastik and that works because even you got confused with that reference
The nazi symbol is called HAKENKREUZ meaning 'hooked cross of Jesus christ', a 100% pure Christian symbol. Calling HAKENKREUZ as Swastika is a genocidal blood libel against Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs of Bharat/India.
Sean some points for providing cultural context : 1.) Swastika as shown in the movie is considered as the most auspicious symbol of Indic religions, the symbol is painted for every religious ceremony, almost no religious ceremony is considered complete w/o the symbol , it represents prosperity ,peace and cycle of life. Nazi appropriation of the symbol have not had any effect on its usage in India, due to multiple reasons. 2.) Regarding polygamy, In India and in most Islamic nations, polygamy for those practising Islam is legal and common practice, the restriction of such practices have been a big contention among Indian society but this have come into great resistance from Islamic spiritual and political leaders and tribal population in India, where it is seen as an infringement of their cultural practices. 3.) While I agree that the later half of the movie is too long, one has to understand the movie is meant to be viewed with an interval so as to not exhaust audience because of its runtime, Why they don't allow intermission in foreign countries is beyond my understanding as an interval is good for both the audience and cinema halls. Some Indian movie recommendations: Andhadhun (Black comedy, Thriller), Sardar Uddham (historical, drama), Barfi! (romcom, drama). P.S. Some of the great Indian movies didn't get wide foreign release because big action movies are considered good crossover movies (like Marvels) , I hope you can catch these movies like 12th fail, whenever they get released on OTT in your country.
Very bad recommendation. Andhadhund is heavily inspired while Barfi is scene to scene copied from various movies. Sardar Uddham though is an excellent recommendation. Also, even with the intermission the movie is just too long
The controversy is basically regarding the director. His last film got trashed by critics as misogynistic, hypermasculine and too violent. Later the director in an interview said I will show you what is real violence and what is real disturbing. Animal is kind of a response by the director towards his critics. Even animal will have debates around misogyny and portrayal of toxic relationships on screen
@@divineflu34567 I had issues with the screenplay specially the second half. Even the antagonist wasn't properly fleshed out or the familial link to balbir's father. Bobby deol just pops out of nowhere. Between father-son and revenge drama the whole thing becomes quite a mess. But I did enjoy the first half of the movie specially the fight sequence towards the intermission

Hey Sean, long time subscriber and I was the one that tweeted about this movie and brought it up onto your radar. Thanks for this review! I want to address the different topics you've mentioned in your review. Swastika: Swastika was used in Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, for thousands of years. And we(Indians, people from South Asia) still use it to this day in rituals and ceremonies. There have been countless of tweets from ignorant people from the “west” that go trending every couple of months demeaning the use of the symbol and the way they are shocked that people can use that symbol today. There have been attacks on local temples in America numerous times, vandalizing property spray painting the words“Get Out” - alongside a symbol that was almost familiar to the temple’s patrons: a swastika. People don't realize that from Stone Age drawings in 10,000 B.C. to carvings in the ancient Greek city of Troy, swastikas were used on virtually every continent as a symbol of good fortune. In Hinduism, there’s an association with the sun. ‘Swastik’ in Sanskrit means lucky or auspicious. I personally in middle school and high school in California had to explain the difference between the Nazi Swastika and the one that's the symbol for so much more good for so much more time in Human History. Controversy surrounding the Director and movie: Sandeep Reddy Vanga (The director) is known to really push the envelope of what the “template/formula” in Indian cinema. He is Telugu so he made His first movie ‘Arjun Reddy’ in Tollywood was made for 500K of his own money and it made over 8 million at the box office. Then he remade his own movie in Bollywood as ‘Kabir Singh' and that was the highest grossing movies for that actor's career in Bollywood, so that drew in a lot more eyeballs in criticism. Sandeep Reddy Vanga mentioned in an interview that "in Love it's ok to slap each other". That stirred the pot for a lot of people, and to be frank, sexism and misogyny is still prevalent some parts of the India, and some sections of the audience felt that Kabir Singh only added fuel to the fire and did nothing to explore anything new about that relationship. The way people treat movies and actors in India is very different to America and "the west". People refer to them as stars, or heroes and villains. People can't distinguish the difference between Hero and Protagonist. Ofcourse we can't place the blame of societies fault on a freaking movie of all things. I have a lot more to say, but for this comment I think it's enough for now lol. Also, I'm not trying to offend you Sean, I've seen your videos for years. I just thought you would talk in depth of the specific aspects of the film or have a spoiler section. Because while you did address your experience, personally I wanted more discussions about the technical aspects of the movie, the performances, the cinematography, or the way this movie is SO different from the other Indian movies you've seen this year.
Thanks for the context and clarification I don’t think Im normally known for my analysis of cinematography or performances. I don’t think those are particularly my strengths and it’s particularly difficult to do when I’m new to something. It’s very difficult to go in-depth because my experience is limited.
10:00 If you visit India during Diwali or any major festival, you will see little girls drawing Swastika Rangoli outside their homes, while many homes and shops display the Swastika symbol at their entrance. Hindus take pride in this symbol, featuring it everywhere they go, including in the US. There is no reason to take offense since the Swastika is a symbol of peace and prosperity. The Nazi symbol is the Nazi Hakenkreuz, and it has nothing to do with the Swastika. Unfortunately, many people are victims of propaganda against the Swastika, confusing it with the tilted symbol (Hakenkreuz). The movie rightly emphasizes this difference, highlighting that the Swastika is not related to the Nazi symbol.
It obviously used to be with Hindu kings having many wives and with multiple references in the sacred texts like Mahabharata, Ramayana but not anymore however polygamy is still widely practised in Islam to this day.
Indian film has a lot going on in December. The two main movies both on December 22 (our own Barbenheimer), Dunki and Salaar (the trailer for which just dropped, I hope you watch it or at least react to it), are the ones I think you would really enjoy. Salaar the trash has no stand against a masterpieces like dunky when the director who gave 3idiots and PK and SRK is in play. Forget barbiehemer. Openheimer and Barbie were both wonderful flims on their own genre and both already had a brand value of Nolan's flim and Barbie is itself a brand. But incase of dunky & Salaar, Salaar has literally no stand as it's completely out of a brand value. Mark my words salaar will fail

I mean this movie potreys toxic masculinities as flaw(like arjun reddy and kabir singh) and result of truama from childhood abuse...this should be more in line with feminists belief right ? American psycho was the same thing even in the novel adaptation...
amazing review! i think the best thing about this movie is the relationship between the father and the son and how it’s a whole character study of the main character. I also thought that the underdevelopment of the villains were weird and like i was thinking who’s the main villain, but there isn’t really a TRUE villain. because we realize that it’s a tragic story about one character and his dad, and how the real villain metamorphically is himself in a way.

By the way sandeep the director did something so wild and opposite of regular bollywood in this film so yes it is same for us as well I perticularly did not find it that violent but what we saw here was never seen before and it is a benchmark in indian cinema... This is the director's third movie where second movie was first movie's remake and last movie he was struggling for edits in Bollywood but because of that movie's succes he was able to make it least edited and he is unapologetic about everything from, themes, ideologies dialogues and we can see that but its just his courage to go against everything that Bollywood wants and make people do is appreciated
Swastika has nothing to do with Nazi. Nazi symbol is called Hakencruz, a Chistian symbol. Calling it swastika the biggest nazi cover up in the history.
Honest review, nice job...also about swastika, in Indian culture its a symbol of divine holiness and purity, you can t compare a 5000 year old culture to a 75 year old European phase that started and lasted like 5 years
Swastika is atleast 5000 years old symbol. It's a Sanskrit name which means "well being" Hindus, Jains and Buddhists in India draw Swastika symbol on the doors of Homes and religious places to bring good luck. It's one of the most sacred synbols used in India. Nazis used "Haken cruz" which was a hooked cross and anticlockwise.
In Hinduism, the right-facing symbol (clockwise) (卐) is called swastika, symbolizing surya ('sun'), prosperity and good luck, while the left-facing symbol (counter-clockwise) (卍) is called sauvastika, symbolising night or tantric aspects of goddess Kali.
The best way to explain the difference between A Swastika and a Tilted one is to refence the Christian cross being upside down as simple as that, it completely changes the meaning it stands for so hopefully this will help bridge the gap in understanding the use of different symbols and their meaning. Also great review Thanks for checking out this movie from our country.
Many ancient artifacts and stones found in excavation throughout the European continent had Swastika symbol on them indicating that it was well known in Europe as well. I read somewhere that Swastika was also used in a US military regiment's uniform (not sure which one) in pre world war era! Meanwhile Hitler and Nazis never used the word "Swastika" for their symbol but rather they used "Hakencruetz" (meaning Hooked Cross) but for some unknown reasons Nazi symbol is still referred as a "Swastika"!
It was a self indulgent movie for Sandeep Vanga mostly. He made half the movie with storyline in mind and other half to portray his version of alpha male and how it is defined. I mean throughout movie we were trying to solve father son relationship and what alpha male is. Unfortunately, Indian audience loves and even whistles to such pandering so Sandeep Vanga journey continues.
Context with regards to controversy; bollywood is not used to a protagonist with so much grey shades in his character. They're used to quintessential good guy, the HERO of the movie who's super romantic dotted on by elders and youngers. Someone to look up to. But this was bollywood's take on a grey character with quentin tarantino storytelling; non-linear and kill bill type of action. A song or 2 thrown in cos that's what the Indian audience appreciate. Bollywood is finding hard to digest that such a character can be portrayed by the main lead.

11:10 The swastika is actually a holy symbol in Hindu religion. You will see it in lot of Indian houses or people making it during religious festivals. It has nothing to do with hitler or Germany. The film is clearly marketed as a man-child's killing spree for his father. So anyone who went to the theatres expecting him to be a saint and pure of heart should get their head checked. Don't expect all the heroes to be morally sound
The movie is an answer to the woke critics & pseudo-feminists & to those action filmmaker who have a lot of western influence in an order to pander to their audience. Vanga made it more of a action movie that's suited & rooted in Indian sensibilities. Also, i think the runtime should've been a 10-20 mins shorter but, I dont have any complaints with its current runtime since it had so many things going on. Regarding the screen-time of villian i think it was really very effective & SRV presents a masterclass of how to make a villian menacing even without a lot of screentime or voice. We don't need His entire backstory or detailed exposition but, jus hints & references of His brutality r enough to show the gravity of His nature. I wanted to explain abt the Swastika & its importance to Us, Hindus but i guess many of those in the comment section have done a much better job. I'm happy that finally a non - Indian reviewer is having his perspective on it & i hope more of them can have their take on it. That'll generate fresh perspectives for it. I think that Animal might be the movie of 2023 even with Dunki '& Salaar on their way.
also the swastika is also a very pious symbol of hinduism, so they probably meant it in that way but na i hear you the movie reeks of extremely edgy and shady moments meant to make us believe it was an innocent coincidence
Film like this can't be made by Hollywood these days or there will be much outrage by some of the over-woke mob communities like what happened in 2019 during the releasing days of Joker and The Irrishman. Edit: Also do watch Sandeep Reddy Vanga's first film, Kabir Singh which was also very controversial but a very good film in terms of technicalities.
What a ridiculous comparison. Joke made a billion dollars. There's a huge difference between a movie like a Joker showing how a troubled character gets formed, and a movie like this which just romantisizes toxic masculinity
@@tswfootball Most of the Critics also said that Joker and Irishman is the embodiment of White Male Rage and the toxic masculinity, i still remember that cringey ass SNL skit criticizing these 2 films while making fun of these 2 masterpieces. Bro doesn't understand the difference bw what's supposed to be a redemption arc and a functional love story. Kabir is a walking talking red flag who needed to 'work' on his anger issues and 'earn' his redemption but instead his dadi dies and he ends up getting the girl?! @@smita568 Kabir Singh literally lost his job, becomes homeless, he also gets humiliated as his license was cancelled plus that actress' PR also thrashes his life. Still you say he didn't lost anything to earn that redemption. And at the climax of the film he also said Sorry to Preeti also take the slaps from her as a revenge, said sorry to his and her parents. Then become a happily married guy afterwards. At the end, Kabir totally earned that after what he lost including her grandmother too.
@@smita568that's the point bro, not every hero has the redemption arc, some people just keep getting worse that's what is shown in the movie, if the director wanted a redemption arc he would have developed it but he didn't and i don't think he didn't give him a redemption arc for no reason, so he made that on purpose to tell the story of a man who is beyond saving.
The 1st movie that was directed by this director was very controversial cuz of the way love is portrayed. The movie is called Kabir singh. I personally love that movie
i have seen many people saying Sandeep's first film is Kabir singh. No!! Its Arjun Reddy and Kabir singh is just a remake of it.Also Arjun Reddy >> kabir Singh when we compare the acting of lead role.
The movie itself is incoherent. In Arjun Reddy/Kabir Singh, all those 'offensive' scenes more or less contributed to the storyline or served a purpose. Here, Sandeep goes out of the way and the story to create these “shock value” scenes.

@SeanChandlerTalksAbout For the gore. Indian films are only recently showing more blood in films. A lot of it is because censors in India make it harder for directors to portray gore in its purest form. Now, exposure to global cinema, streaming (where censors have no control in India), more lobbying power is making films with more blood possible here.
Polygamy is still practised in Islam. Characters who were engaged in polygamy in the film such as the main antagonist were Muslim (who had converted to Islam - mentioned in the film).
I agree that the movie could have been cut way better.. it would have made a good 2h20 gangster revenge drama instead of the 3h26 min film we got that gets lost into so many subplots that are not that interesting
Swastika is a Holy Sign in Hinduism and it symbolizes Peace and prosperity 🙏 Long before Nazis, this symbol has been a holy symbol for us, we draw this on our houses and shops for the hope of peace and prosperity almost thousands of years.❤
From a guy who has barely watched Bollywood movies since 2016 but a bunch load before, or astonishes me every time I get myself to indulge in one. Most blockbusters have similar reviews on the net. People talk about what an emotional rollercoaster it is or how thrilling or entertaining the action sequences are. The plot, I feel, is always so hollow. And the movies are dragged with info that's irrelevant or confusing. I'm just 27 to be saying this but I'd say Bollywood used to be much better when I was younger.
Nazis symbol is 'Hakenkreuz' wheras Indian symbol is called 'Swastika'. It is a sacred symbol in india associated with with prosperity and happiness. Probably a simple Google search could have told you that. But nevertheless there is a lesson in that also never allow hatred for something consume you so much that you have to close your mind to reality.
It's not Swastika in case of Nazis. It's called Hakenkreuz. Swastik is symbol of Indian subcontinent, generally used to denote God Ganesh and auspicious occasion.
Polygamy is not allowed in sanatan dharma religion ( hindu , sikh , Buddhist, jain ) but in india several other people of different faith leave , and india is a democratic country soo we can't decide the choice of others religion people particularly islam ,, police and judiciary can only interfare if the complaints file ,, bcs its democracy , but Hindus don't follow Polygamy its strictly banned and not acceptable in society
The word “swastika” has Sanskrit roots and means “the mark of well being.” It has been used in prayers of the Rig Veda, the oldest of Hindu scriptures. In Buddhism, the symbol is known as “manji” and signifies the Buddha's footsteps.
The reason for using the Swastika in the movie aligns with what you might be thinking at the moment. It is intended for a Western audience, particularly those who associate the swastika with the Nazis. Despite its thousands of years of history as a symbol of peace and prosperity, the impact of war and association with Hitler has unfortunately overshadowed its positive connotations. Still it means same for us like thousand years ago.
the best and the only way to tell if an Indian movie was good or bad is by asking yourself after watching it "was I entertained?" - if yes, nice, if no, next one.
It's a Swastika, not the Hitler's Hakenkreuz/hooked cross. Hitler never called his symbol Swastika. He called it Hakenkreuz in his biography mine kamf. The symbol like Swastika has been part of almost all the major civilization and culture. It was even used by the one of the Native American tribe, until the US government forced them to abandon it. A word Swastika has been derived from the Sanskrit word ( Su + Asti ) Su means good and Asti means happens. Its literal meaning is something which good happens. This term Swastika is only used in the context of Hindu, Jain and Buddhist religion
Sean, I have been watching your videos from the very beginning. I know very much about you and love you. There is no cultural difference in the movie. If you think the male dominance and the cruelty was the difference then I want to clarify we here very much respect the women. It was just the particular mindset of that director. We are humans and very much alike. I am like you, Sean. Please watch Indian movies just like another movie. Btw watch Vikram one more time because it is best Lokesh movie and you ranked it third 😅. Love your work, Sean. You are the best.
What Hitler/Nazis used is "hecken cross". Not necessarily Swastika. Swastika is a symbol of peace, embraced by Dharmic religion (Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism etc). The reason why you don't know that is because the west doesn't care about anything that is peaceful (Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism) its obsessed with violence and Europe. Most people in south and southeast asia knows about Swastika. But western media doesn't show anything about Asia and asian culture much.
You missed the fact that the "Villain" is not the real villain, this movie was to prepare you for the real thing which is going to be second part where Ranbir would play both villain and hero...

The main controversy regarding this movie is that it’s promoting toxic masculinity and misbehavior with females. Bad language and kill and all that.. As India is a country that has a lot of people that get influenced by movies a lot.. specially in a country like India, where they have had great cases and violent cases, such as the New Delhi ones people feel that this movie was kind of promoting that kind of behavior for men..
If I am not wrong, Swastika essentially is a resemblance of health and success, it's supposed to be pious in Indian culture. However, the context with which it plays out in the film and the deliberate justification given in the film actually makes it more synonymous to the negativity that the symbol often represents.
One perceptive guy explained the movie for Westerners im this way: Animal is the Indian version of Joker, difference being: indian one is motivated by filial piety instead of loneliness. 1. swastika is an extraordinarily common symbol in India, many many religious hindu ceremonies actually need that as a ritual requirment Its also painted on doors, indoor walls as it represents auspiciousness. Common indians hence, naturally dont share the dread associated with it as westerners do 2. Polygamy is only practiced by Muslims, indian law allows them to do so. No other religious grp in india does that or even allowed by law
What you call swastika was not even called swastika by nazis it was called Hakenkreuz which means hooked cross. It is entirely different from swastika which is derived from sanskrit , where su means good and asti means health or being.
Polygamy is not common in India. Polygamy is permissible for muslims which is shown wirh a fictional character. Polygamy also not that common amongst muslims in India
Swastika is hindu symbol actually which we made to our door on some festivals to welcome goddess of wealth and fortune laxmi. We didn't know about Nazi's culture but its very holy symbol for us.
Hitler used crooked cross (literal translation of hakenkreuz). But Christian English translator translated that word as Swastika (definitely with malice).
Watched only 40min up till now. The film hit hard, even in the first 5-6min, given I'm a father of a very young child. Up till now, haven't witnessed any misogyny and what not the comments and reviews have been talking about. Just seems like a story which makes you feel sad why ppl didn't make different choices at the time
Swasthika indicates prosperity and is part of every celebration in Hindu culture, such as weddings, newborn naming ceremony, house warming, etc.. every Indian (Hindus) has a form of swasthika in their home, in their place of worship. As an example, If someone buys a brand new car, they hand draw a swasthika with turmeric on the car for good luck. As such swasthika has a significance for every new beginning.
"The word swastika comes from the Sanskrit svastika, which means “good fortune” or “well-being." The motif (a hooked cross) appears to have first been used in Eurasia, as early as 7000 years ago, perhaps representing the movement of the sun through the sky. To this day, it is a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Odinism. It is a common sight on temples or houses in India or Indonesia. Swastikas also have an ancient history in Europe, appearing on artifacts from pre-Christian European cultures" - We need to understand the originations of the Swastika and perversions /appropriations of this in other cultures do not make it a symbol that belongs to the US or Germany or overrides its significance to Indians. We need to move away from our narrow perspectives of one country = world view.

Ok
Some people are telling you wrong things about the meaning of Sawstika. Pls don’t believe the information you get without researching about it.
Swastika isn’t a symbol for “peace” anywhere, let alone India or China (its birthplace).
The symbol has 2 forms: right hand form (clockwise) 卐 and
left hand form 卍.
Absent Fathers are a recipe of Physiological Ill Children.
Swastika is symbol of peace nd prosperity for hindus, buddhists, jains, sikhs. Hekenkruz mean hooked cross is the real word which was used by nazis

Thanks for clarifying

Even Punjabi muslims have retained this mourning tradition (hence you find extra lines in the movie missing from the album version, where he says "Abba" (muslim word for father) instead of "Papa" (anglo word that most indians use in post-colonial bharat))
The one Brother who stayed back in Punjab - tradition in Punjab is such that the oldest son of a Hindu family was dedicated to fighting the Mughal colonizers - hence they took the path of the student (ie Sikhi Panth).

Sean some points for providing cultural context :
1.) Swastika as shown in the movie is considered as the most auspicious symbol of Indic religions, the symbol is painted for every religious ceremony, almost no religious ceremony is considered complete w/o the symbol , it represents prosperity ,peace and cycle of life.
Also, even with the intermission the movie is just too long
Andhadhun was good but not barfi.. I couldn't watch it for more than 20 mins.. much better to recommend movies like vadh that are actually good..
@Replies section: OP has given great recommendations.
They have intermission for this with Australian cinemas thankfully
Also in the film itself there is a joke about the nazi symbol looking like a swastika

Hey Sean, long time subscriber and I was the one that tweeted about this movie and brought it up onto your radar. Thanks for this review!
I want to address the different topics you've mentioned in your review.
Swastika:
Swastika was used in Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, for thousands of years.
Controversy surrounding the Director and movie:
Sandeep Reddy Vanga (The director) is known to really push the envelope of what the “template/formula” in Indian cinema.

The movie rightly emphasizes this difference, highlighting that the Swastika is not related to the Nazi symbol.
polygamy is acceptable in Islam, not in Hinduism.
It obviously used to be with Hindu kings having many wives and with multiple references in the sacred texts like Mahabharata, Ramayana but not anymore however polygamy is still widely practised in Islam to this day.

It's a Sanskrit name which means "well being"
Hindus, Jains and Buddhists in India draw Swastika symbol on the doors of Homes and religious places to bring good luck.
Christian started calling it as swastika because they want to show that any religion using this symbol is bad

@@FaisalAnsari-pk9by lot of debate around the uniform civil code. I guess if that becomes a law then it will be applicable for all religions across the country
Swastika & Hakenkcreuz aren't the same thing.
Hi Sean. In terms of Indian movies coming out this month, I would recommend you must see Dunki (SRK & Rajkumar Hirani) & Salaar (But make sure you see KGF: Chapters 1 & 2 first)
Btw salaar is not related to kgf btw
@@AKking27we don’t know that yet, hopefully it’s in the same universe
@@Kannadiga229it is confirmed by director few days ago that salaar is not connected to kgf at all
@@Hmmm783 he also said no kgf 3 during kgf 2 promotions but in the movie post credits scene said we are gonna get kgf 3 one day.
I think he is just hiding because he wants to surprise the audience.
So after watching all these movies this year and listening to your reviews I feel like Leo was your favourite from India for 2023.
Think of an animal(lead) with its animalistic tendencies and instincts protecting its territory (dad) is how you can interpret the movie and character hence named ANIMAL
12:35 sister wives are a thing in the US among Christian cult. Polygamy is there among mozlums all over the world. Even in the US, many in that community have one legal wife and rest are blessed by mosque. Just as the christain cults do in utah or arizona.
Sister wives are a small minority within a small minority and complete condemned by the rest of society. It’s a joke thing that people laugh at.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout oh! Thank you. Didnt know that it's a small community. . But among migrants from particular community polygamy is there even in the west and Europe. It's sad but true.
@@SeanChandlerTalksAbout in Muslims too its a small minority and are condemned by society.
The film is clearly marketed as a man-child's killing spree for his father. So anyone who went to the theatres expecting him to be a saint and pure of heart should get their head checked. Don't expect all the heroes to be morally sound
if boy cries, he is man child, if he does not cry its patriarchy.
Swastika is a Sanskrit symbol for continuing creation. It's of Indian origin, the Nazi's took it from ancient Indian history. 😊
It was a clear parallel being drawn between the character of Ranvijay and F@scism.
also the swastika is also a very pious symbol of hinduism, so they probably meant it in that way but na i hear you the movie reeks of extremely edgy and shady moments meant to make us believe it was an innocent coincidence
Edit: this film doesn't romanticize toxic masculinity, it tells us a message about that working Dads or Parents should spent the quality time with their kids otherwise their children would become evil just like Ranvijay Singh Balbir (Animal) himself.
Bro doesn't understand the difference bw what's supposed to be a redemption arc and a functional love story. Kabir is a walking talking red flag who needed to 'work' on his anger issues and 'earn' his redemption but instead his dadi dies and he ends up getting the girl?! Shahid's conviction as an actor sold the climax but that written material barely makes sense to me. It really was hard to sit through.
*ARJUN REDDY
I loved Kabir Singh too
Animal is so underwhelming in comparison to Kabir Singh. Some scenes from Kabir Singh still make me emotional to date
i have seen many people saying Sandeep's first film is Kabir singh.
OOO brother swasthika is totally different from Nazi symbol, it is older than ur civilization, it is oommm (most satisfying chant in this world for me)
It's not Om, it's the symbol of peace.
@@ravitejaknts there are multiple meanings like well being , religious faith etc but what it meant for us individually that's important, but comparison with Nazi symbol hurts
In Hinduism, the swastika is a sacred symbol for good fortune and a yearning for blessings from the Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth. 🕉️
@Sean. Swatik is an Indian symbol first before Nazis used it. Doesn't matter what America thinks.
Keep reviewing Indian films Sean!! I'm loving your reviews ❤️ 13:22
Swastika is most used hindu symbol. If you know Rangoli. My mom make swastika daily in rangoli outside home and in front of small god temple in home too.
Its far more common than what you think.
Thank You 🙏🏻
To keep things in perspective , this movie is firstvof its kind for Indian cinema.
Interesting. In which regards?
@SeanChandlerTalksAbout For the gore. Indian films are only recently showing more blood in films. A lot of it is because censors in India make it harder for directors to portray gore in its purest form.
Now, exposure to global cinema, streaming (where censors have no control in India), more lobbying power is making films with more blood possible here.
Polygamy is still practised in Islam. Characters who were engaged in polygamy in the film such as the main antagonist were Muslim (who had converted to Islam - mentioned in the film).
Thanks for clarifying.
I agree that the movie could have been cut way better.. it would have made a good 2h20 gangster revenge drama instead of the 3h26 min film we got that gets lost into so many subplots that are not that interesting
Where r u from ?
It's not a gangster movie. U have to understand that it's a drama movie that has action in it.
I recommend you watch Barfi, you'd love it, its the same actor in a totally different role, you'd love the charlie chaplin antics.
Swastika is a Holy Sign in Hinduism and it symbolizes Peace and prosperity 🙏
Long before Nazis, this symbol has been a holy symbol for us, we draw this on our houses and shops for the hope of peace and prosperity almost thousands of years.❤
From a guy who has barely watched Bollywood movies since 2016 but a bunch load before, or astonishes me every time I get myself to indulge in one.
I've tried give them a chance but it's not for me.
You need to watch MY NAME IS KHAN. It is amazing!
12:26 Multiple wives part is explained when the grandfather mentions his brother separated and changed religion to islm to have multiple wives.
The word “swastika” has Sanskrit roots and means “the mark of well being.” It has been used in prayers of the Rig Veda, the oldest of Hindu scriptures. In Buddhism, the symbol is known as “manji” and signifies the Buddha's footsteps.
Swastik is Hindu godly symbol so pure symbol of good luck
The reason for using the Swastika in the movie aligns with what you might be thinking at the moment. It is intended for a Western audience, particularly those who associate the swastika with the Nazis. Despite its thousands of years of history as a symbol of peace and prosperity, the impact of war and association with Hitler has unfortunately overshadowed its positive connotations. Still it means same for us like thousand years ago.
the best and the only way to tell if an Indian movie was good or bad is by asking yourself after watching it "was I entertained?" - if yes, nice, if no, next one.
Swastika is a sacred Hindu symbol ,its origin come from sacred symbol of ancient Aryan race , a race which Hitler too believed just like us in India
U should watch salaar next. Its also a big anticipated indian action film
I will say this, this movie has been the best bollywood movie ive ever seen in my life and ranvir kapoor is my all time fav actor now
What Hitler/Nazis used is "hecken cross".
Americans are ignorant about Swastika. It is thousands of year old. It is as old as Indian civilization and stands for well being.
Unfortunately this is very true.
I watched this movie and I’m 13 lmao managed to sneak in.but I can tell you shit was firee🎉🎉
Hi, watched one of your videos for the first time. Really enjoyed it man. Keep it up brotha!
You missed the fact that the "Villain" is not the real villain, this movie was to prepare you for the real thing which is going to be second part where Ranbir would play both villain and hero...
They were Jaat from Punjab!!! Jaat have this thing that they seek revenge from generation after generation. Father tells son who to kill and it just goes on and on till the other side perish!!. By the way, Blood trials are real thing!!!
Ya absolutely spot on , Director should have add more depth to the Villain , they probably had more scenes but cut them out for more Ranbir scenes
Yeah there will be an extended on ott . Even if you google you can see there's a child actor who played Bobby Deol's character . So there were childhood scenes recorded as back story
Polygamy is a Islamic thing as the converted character himself, Abrar
What an in depth review 🙌, Subscribed
Ever heard of Google? Google Swastika and its significance in hindu culture.
Nazi symbol is not Swastika, it is HAKKENKREUZ. Americans were ignorant/did it intentionally calling it Swastika in their Hollywood movies.
Amezing movie...not for kids and girls..😂😂
If I am not wrong, Swastika essentially is a resemblance of health and success, it's supposed to be pious in Indian culture. However, the context with which it plays out in the film and the deliberate justification given in the film actually makes it more synonymous to the negativity that the symbol often represents.
They explained this in this movie
The nazi symbol is called HAKENKREUZ meaning 'hooked cross of Jesus christ', a 100% pure Christian symbol. Calling HAKENKREUZ as Swastika is a genocidal blood libel against Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs of Bharat/India.
One perceptive guy explained the movie for Westerners im this way:
Animal is the Indian version of Joker, difference being: indian one is motivated by filial piety instead of loneliness.
1. swastika is an extraordinarily common symbol in India, many many religious hindu ceremonies actually need that as a ritual requirment
Its also painted on doors, indoor walls as it represents auspiciousness.
Common indians hence, naturally dont share the dread associated with it as westerners do
Same here in Nepal.

Hitler used crooked cross (literal translation of hakenkreuz).
But Christian English translator translated that word as Swastika (definitely with malice).

Very solid review Sean! Much love from Texas!
Texas! I'm in Texas!
Swastik is Older than anything you see. Its symbol of prosperity and harmony
Swastikas also have an ancient history in Europe, appearing on artifacts from pre-Christian European cultures" -
We need to understand the originations of the Swastika and perversions /appropriations of this in other cultures do not make it a symbol that belongs to the US or Germany or overrides its significance to Indians. We need to move away from our narrow perspectives of one country = world view.
