I watched the first episode when it premiered, then waited until last weekend to binge the rest of it. I started watching it for the second time today. Sofia is my favorite character. I hate what was done to her. It's such a fantastic, well told show 🐧
What happened to Vic was very shocking and unexpected, as Oz knew that he couldn't be trusted anymore and even said that "Family can give you strength, but it can be your own weakness. I can't let that happen again, kid, not ever again. It's too much. You have a big heart, Vic."
Throughout the show, I questioned whether Oz would kill Vic or let him live, including in the finale. I think his fate makes sense -- it is The Penguin, after all.
26:00 I read that scene a little bit differently. For me it seemed the change came over Oz as Vic got really personal with him, and it seemed that Oz felt really connected with him, perhaps even recognized that he cared for Vic, and that recognition of how close they'd become was the thing that motivated him to kill him, because he knew how close he'd just come to loosing everything because of the one relationship he had (a relationship built on selfish attention-seeking and his need for validation more than genuine love) and knew he couldn't afford to let anyone else get that close. It's not that he didn't recognize Victor's love for him, I think he did and that's the reason he did it, cause he couldn't allow himself to care.

This was probably my favorite series of 2024 and very well done! I will state that having grown up reading both Marvel and DC comics in the 80s and 90s, Marvel's heroes and villains have traditionally fallen in shades of grey in that the heroes are often flawed and the villains often sympathetic - which has translated well imo in the MCU. DC on the other hand has traditionally presented their heroes and villains in a more black and white context and I was pleasantly surprised to see how well that worked with The Penguin - he's a complex character, but not deserving of sympathy. Btw, I don't think either Marvel or DC is better and I have honestly appreciated the differences between the two styles - and there are always exceptions to these rules like Marvel's Red Skull being devoid of any sympathy at any point in his character's development.
I’m finishing up the finale now but I gotta say, I was hooked from episode one. I kind of like that Matt Reeves will let the Batman movies be a thing, but then the world of Gotham can extend in shows like this. This show may be favorite of the year.
I was hooked from the beginning tbh, but i know for some people HBO shows take a few episodes to get you hooked. It seems like people are saying the same for Dune prophecy. Personally im really excited for it but i know itll take time for such a complex story to take shape. Another HBO show called industry, its about the 2008 stock market crash and how a group of people use it to climb on top, but basically the first 2 seasons are like a solid 7.5/10 and then the recent season season 3, was like a 10/10, but u really feel like ur time invested has been payed off. That's what i love about HBO, People complained about season 2 of HOTD, and tbf it was slow, but i garentee season 3 will be back with a bang
I have to say that I loved how Oz had these dark expressions that hinted at his true nature throughout the series, Spoilers: The look on his face when after killing Alberto, after killing Maroni's family, and right before he turns the tables on Sofia. After watching the video posted above, I think Oz probably has a form of delusion where he does not believe that he killed his own brothers - I think he believes his own lie because he doesn't want to own up to it with his mother.
This show is fantastic, one of my favorite moments with Sofia is when she yes, she murders her whole family just because her father is an asshole that threw her in jail for absolutely no reason and doesn’t even consider that Oz framed her and when she murders her whole family that was the one scene that in a messed up way, I was rooting for her to do it because, I thought to myself “Gotham will be better off without them.” sort of an idea but even then, she protects her niece or whoever it was in relation to her in the greenhouse so she didn’t have to see her murder the entire family and really, that was awesome because, it shows that “little piece of humanity” that pulls her back in that instance according to Sean.
I enjoyed most of it… spoilers: I would have preferred it if Batman did showed up, specially after the big explosion! Didn’t enjoyed some plot convinces like how easy it was for Sal Maroni to escape from prison…
I wished you had mentioned that letter she gets from Selina Kyke her half-sister. Casuals along with my girlfriend asking who's Selina Kyle lol 🤦 would be interesting where they go with that. 🐈
2:50 The Batman laid the groundwork for everything to go down in the show, but crap didn't really start to hit the fan until Oz killed Alberto, which was the first scene of the movie. That was the real inciting incident, and it was a shocking one at that. I found that whole scene to be a flawless hook for the show, as it gave us everything we need to know about the character in 5-10 minutes. It shows he's willing to risk his neck and get his hands dirty, then he gets caught and we see his smoothtalking skills at work as he worms his way out of the situation, then we get an insight into his motivations as he monologues to Alberto, then we see how insecure, psychopathic and impulsive he is when he murders him for insulting him, and finally we get his signature comedic relief as he realizes what a mess he's in. I was so in from then on.
How Oz lied and manipulated all the characters in the show into believing maybe he was something other than a villain, is exactly what his character was doing to all of us as an audience. We knew he was a bad guy but we thought we were seeing even someone like him could still have a piece of humanity within but the bastard got us too
This is one of my favorite shows ever. I just want to say Oz is definitely one of the greatest villains ever and his mom deserves to be a vegetable for giving birth to this devil and she knew what Oz did to her other sons
Ya i absolutely loved this show and for me it was the best show of the year no doubt. I loved everything it did and how it took inspiration from The Sopranos and Breaking Bad I order to create a great character piece on a dark character and reveal just how terrible he is and set him up for future Batman movies
*The* *Penguin* I finally caught up and finished the series last night. I was going to make a comment for Ep. 6 about 2 weeks ago but just didn’t find the time. Then when Ep. 7 rolled around, I didn’t see it until the other night. I was so invested on our 2024 Election, I decided to put off watching The Penguin until only 2 days ago. I personally thought Ep. 6 was a little weak. Felt it was a rethread. I don’t hate it or think it’s awful. Just wasn’t one of the stronger episodes. But Ep. 7 and 8 were very strong. Ep. 7 gave us a very informative background on Oz’s younger life and how needy he’s always been. The scene that broke most viewers’ hearts: Oz chokes Victor to death. Damn. Damn. Damn. I had a feeling this would happen. Shows the black heart that Oz always had. He can care but he can never care enough as his mom told him. I did feel the last 2 episodes, Oz and Sofia were wearing plot armor as if the writers didn’t want to kill either one which makes sense. They’re too good to kill off this soon. But when Sofia got Oz’s mom to confess that she always knew Oz let his brothers drown, that was some gripping drama to watch. Then the betrayal of Link towards Zhao was one of those twists I did not see coming as I thought Victor was going to rat on Oz. I was relieved that Sofia wasn’t killed and only went back to Arkham where she would receive a letter from her half-sis, Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman). This can set up so many intriguing possibilities in the two sequels for The Batman. Bruce has got a lot on his plate if he has to deal with Oz and Sofia still alive out there. Oz truly is a wicked, wicked man who should get no sympathy from the viewers. Sofia is the better human being in the story. The ending was also quite beautiful. I hope this show wins Emmys for Colin and Cristin. It was the best performances of their careers. The most brilliant DC series I’ve ever seen with no bad episodes. It stayed consistent and it made sense. I’ll give it a 8.5/10 overall. Best series I’ve seen since Andor S1. RIP Victor ^ That scene is as heartbreaking as when Fredo Corleone was killed by Al Neri ordered by Michael in The Godfather Part II. Victor gave up everything for Oz and saved his life multiple times in the series only to get betrayed at the end. Can’t wait for The Batman II.
If you listen to the companion podcast the show runner said that he's definitely dead and she named him Victor knowing there are batman villains by that name and realizing fans would theorize about it. The actor himself also knew he was going to die when he first got the role.
Sony is to the Spiderman universe as the Oswald is to Gotham. They could have the money, fame, popularity they want, and think they follow the right steps to get it (vague villain movies, botched team ups / illusions of power, backstabbing goons, etc) but it's relatively fake/lackluster. They have real quality (Spiderman / loyalty like Vic's) right under their nose and instead choose to silence it.
I didn't find The Penguin to be unlikable or irredeemable. He has goals and a purpose. He's doing what's best for himself. He takes care of his Mother. He didn't harm children or do anything weird. He's just a gangster taking care of business.
Taking care of his mother by killing her children's and make her ill even when she ask him to let her die if she get a the vegetable state he make her like a prisoner watching the view she regret asking that psychorat for and having fantasys about her and killing the only one who was loyal to him wow
I obviously find oz as despicable as everyone else by the end of the show, but I honestly think him ratting Sofia out was nowhere near all of the other stufff, and at that point I was still somewhat rooting for him. They showed Sofia discrediting and shaming oz a few times and he even said something like “oh you shouldn’t be talking to this reporter” and she just put him down and ignored his opinion so I don’t think him ratting her out was completely unwarranted. Obviously Sofia isn’t the bad guy either in that situation but it’s t feel like cold calculated rat Oz at that point.
The fact she didnt kill vic or his mom shows she was not evil he killed them making him a Devil..... you can say she isnt dead but is she Really living?

Another HBO show called industry, its about the 2008 stock market crash and how a group of people use it to climb on top, but basically the first 2 seasons are like a solid 7.5/10 and then the recent season season 3, was like a 10/10, but u really feel like ur time invested has been payed off. That's what i love about HBO, People complained about season 2 of HOTD, and tbf it was slow, but i garentee season 3 will be back with a bang
Season 2: penguin vs two face and trying to make connections with court of owls while sofia and catwoman or possible vic return attack him
I have to say that I loved how Oz had these dark expressions that hinted at his true nature throughout the series, Spoilers:
The look on his face when after killing Alberto, after killing Maroni's family, and right before he turns the tables on Sofia. After watching the video posted above, I think Oz probably has a form of delusion where he does not believe that he killed his own brothers - I think he believes his own lie because he doesn't want to own up to it with his mother.
They should put Colin Pharrel's Penguin in Mortal Kombat
The show was very good I'd give it a 8.5/10
This show is fantastic, one of my favorite moments with Sofia is when she yes, she murders her whole family just because her father is an asshole that threw her in jail for absolutely no reason and doesn’t even consider that Oz framed her and when she murders her whole family that was the one scene that in a messed up way, I was rooting for her to do it because, I thought to myself “Gotham will be better off without them.” sort of an idea but even then, she protects her niece or whoever it was in relation to her in the greenhouse so she didn’t have to see her murder the entire family and really, that was awesome because, it shows that “little piece of humanity” that pulls her back in that instance according to Sean.
I personally felt that this show was good from the pilot. I didn't feel like it only picked up from episode 4
It’s alright that you missed it. This is a great show
I enjoyed most of it… spoilers:
I would have preferred it if Batman did showed up, specially after the big explosion!
We knew he was a bad guy but we thought we were seeing even someone like him could still have a piece of humanity within but the bastard got us too
Greatest cb show of all time
Sean can you review superman and lois season 4
I'm watching it and it's really good
Are you more excited for andor season 2 or daredevil born again next year?
This is one of my favorite shows ever. I just want to say Oz is definitely one of the greatest villains ever and his mom deserves to be a vegetable for giving birth to this devil and she knew what Oz did to her other sons
Ya i absolutely loved this show and for me it was the best show of the year no doubt. I loved everything it did and how it took inspiration from The Sopranos and Breaking Bad I order to create a great character piece on a dark character and reveal just how terrible he is and set him up for future Batman movies
Should be nominated for best awards at the golden globes 2025 i saw the first episode today incredible series this is dc comics in his peak 😀 😍 😊
9/10 show
This show was amazing
*The* *Penguin*
I finally caught up and finished the series last night.
RIP Victor
^ That scene is as heartbreaking as when Fredo Corleone was killed by Al Neri ordered by Michael in The Godfather Part II. Victor gave up everything for Oz and saved his life multiple times in the series only to get betrayed at the end. Can’t wait for The Batman II.
can't wait till Batman makes oz fly
Sean my theory is that Vic isn’t dead. And he turns into mr freeze. Cuz in the comics mr freezes name is Victor. Thoughts?
If you listen to the companion podcast the show runner said that he's definitely dead and she named him Victor knowing there are batman villains by that name and realizing fans would theorize about it. The actor himself also knew he was going to die when he first got the role.
@ wow. Thanks for the comment. That’s so sad for victor man
Sony is to the Spiderman universe as the Oswald is to Gotham. They could have the money, fame, popularity they want, and think they follow the right steps to get it (vague villain movies, botched team ups / illusions of power, backstabbing goons, etc) but it's relatively fake/lackluster. They have real quality (Spiderman / loyalty like Vic's) right under their nose and instead choose to silence it.
absolute *penguinism*
Sounds like you need a vacation Sean
I didn't find The Penguin to be unlikable or irredeemable. He has goals and a purpose. He's doing what's best for himself. He takes care of his Mother. He didn't harm children or do anything weird. He's just a gangster taking care of business.
Taking care of his mother by killing her children's and make her ill even when she ask him to let her die if she get a the vegetable state he make her like a prisoner watching the view she regret asking that psychorat for and having fantasys about her and killing the only one who was loyal to him wow
i was rooting for oz the whole time ngl
The makers really made this show with one purpose: "You will be satisfied when Batman beats the fuck out of Penguin"
I think his mother is just a tool for him to justify whatever he do and he knows that...there is no love now but still he wants her to be alive.
I wish more female characters were compelling like Sophia on those comic book movies/shows
Please review FROM! It's an amazing show
I obviously find oz as despicable as everyone else by the end of the show, but I honestly think him ratting Sofia out was nowhere near all of the other stufff, and at that point I was still somewhat rooting for him.
Penguin or The Batman?
The fact she didnt kill vic or his mom shows she was not evil he killed them making him a Devil..... you can say she isnt dead but is she Really living?
No notes
I bet Victor REALLY regretted staying with him
