What people don't understand is that being a strong man means to have great control over your emotions. Real alpha uses aggression wisely and with mind. Nothing is alpha about a man who is always frustrated or has daddy issues in 30s.

It actually showed how shitty he became after he gave his life’s control to his already broken mind. He was already a little disturbed, then gets brain damage also his attitude is destroyed as he has to rely on meds and his wife for little things so he wants to unnecessarily dominate his wife to satisfy his ego, and cheated on his wife like a mindless animal does. In return he looses his father, wife and kinds + possibly his sisters. The 2nd half just shows his character deteriorating as a human

When Kabir Singh released, I watched the film and was completely upset how the film portrayed the character of Preeti and Kabir's attitude towards her. At the same time my 7 years younger brother watched and became fan of the movie. He was in college then. And after watching the film I noticed a subtle change in his behaviour like aggression, loudness, short temper.. I was worried very much that time, if he would wrongly influenced by that movie and started demeaning women.. but by God's grace he becomes normal after few months.

This is the problem that no one seems to get. Everyone's like people should not get influenced by movies, it's just a story and the characters should not be idolised and what not, but truth is people do get heavily influenced by films like these, especially in Indian societies where crimes against women are so high..!
When Kabir Singh released I was also a teenager, I hadn't watched the movie, but I could see my male friends, who had watched it, were clearly influenced by it. ,

My problem with Ranbir’s character was that he lacked basic common sense and sophistication despite his family’s valiant efforts to give him good education. He keeps screaming in the house, he cannot make sound decisions, he doesn’t plan strategies well, he is extremely violent, gets in the field himself and is extremely stubborn. The entire movie he keeps crying about his father not loving him back but the point is that ‘he doesn’t listen to a single thing his father tells him, literally not even a single thing’. The whole movie he only thinks from his knees instead of his brain. In hindi, he is ‘ch****a’.

    1- glorification of toxic masculinity
    2- unnecessary bloodshed

4- normalising psychopathic behaviour and showcasing them as a heart touching revenge saga is not ok!!
5- normalising murdering people and getting away with it just by using ur family’s connection!
6- having an affair an portraying that its a very basic thing
7- polygamy, and some religious aspects leading to it! I dont want to start a communal riot here, so wont go deeper into it

I personally felt, it did promote the typical masculinity culture where women are looked down as 'no power to woman'. I felt it was just a perception towards the trauma and emptiness males go through. That is a good point for us men to be called out for. However there are certain points which do show toxic masculinity. But as a moviemaker, Vanga must not be having any intention to convey these bad messages. It is totally upon us if we glorify the subject or not. Like in a point of time I was also triggered and wanted to comeback as the personality like that toxic, but no that shouldn't happen, no.

Disgusting movie. Nobody says misogynistic men don't exist. But this writer-director so obviously hates women that he humiliates them at every turn. Worse he makes illogical scenes just for shock value throughout the movie. For example the psychologist, questioning right in front of everybody with the very first question being sexual. You don't need a college degree to know that does not happen in realize. Also the action scenes were stupidly executed. The director has used the Godfather theme and lifted from old Hollywood psychosocial thrillers like 91/2 Weeks, U Turn, etc.

Mel was supposed to have a cameo in Hangover franchise but the cast refused to act with him yet they acted with Tyson (who himself has had a controversial past) which goes on to show how problematic Gibson is. Everyone knows about Tarantion's foot fetish and how sleazy he can be with his female actors. The others, I haven't seen so can't comment on them. But Vanga definitely has some issues. he got so affected by the justified criticism of his previous movie that he is acting like a manchild or an edgy teenager that oh, you criticised this...now criticise this even worse product

    2. The bra strap scene was not necessary and disturbing for me.
    3. When he got angry and said that he would kill her if she cheated on him, I think in that scene if he had stayed quiet and embarrassed and only grabbed her neck when she said that about his father then it would have been a little bit justified from Ranvijay's pov who worships his father.
    4. And the scene about the pad changing 4 times a month, it should have been there but written a little differently so we could understand his issues after being ill.

Your comparison to Speak No Evil was spot on, that movie lingered in my mind for days. As far as people being upset about him cheating on his wife… he’s an anti hero which means we find him compelling even if he’s a terrible person. As in this case, he’s a murderous psychopath with extreme daddy issues so him cheating on his wife is the least of his problem. That’s like hating Walter White for lying to his family.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. However, it doesn't mean I love and admire Ranbir Kapoor's character. The film depicted him without glorification. His morals and actions faced continuous scrutiny from his wife and father, with even a church father labeling him as a demon. The character was portrayed as a man dealing with inner demons, described by his wife as a maniac battling demons in his mind. His father labeled him a criminal, sending him to a boarding school. The film explored the consequences of his actions without romanticizing them. It delved into the transformation of a man into an animal, symbolizing a lack of moral conscience, attributed to his toxic relationship with his father. This dark, brutal, and gory narrative stands out in the Indian film industry, and I hope more directors in India explore such styles and genres.

I went to watch this movie with high hopes because it's a Sandeep Reddy Vanga's film. I went with an open mind expecting a lot of bloodshed and emotions from this movie as the trailer suggests. Here are some of the problematic issues which made me disturbed.
    1. First half of the movie was fairly good and interesting to watch. And what ever he was doing made sense.
    2. Before the interval the hero just calls this guy and tells I'll kill you and your family. It's unnecessary for hero to go behind villians family although he didn't. But still saying that is not a Sigma male trait.
    3. Second half hero's slowly going mad. Bra scene was absolutely unnecessary. It made me irritated and uncomfortable.
    4. Heroine talks to her parents and tried to defend hero saying how much he took care of her during her pregnancy but still hero tries to hurt her Asking what the conversation was.
    5. Hero cheats on his wife and justifies saying it was all to save my dad. But in reality he very well knew he was attracted to her.
    6. Hickey color car. What the absolute f"k was that for. Why should she show her hickeys to those random guys for color identification. Would any sensible partner do it with his girl??? Now such shits will be idiolosed and may end up turning as trending reels in insta.
    7. "Lick my shoe". Literally??? This is how she's treated for telling him the truth and confessing her feelings inspite of knowing that he used her to get the truth out.
    8. Shamelessly telling that he'll kill heroine if she tries to have an affair. Doesn't wanna leave her when. She atleast asks for a divorce.
    9. Smoking shamelessly knowing that such things will remove his name from heart donor list. Now that's that's the attitude when u know your dad is a fking millionaire and no body can screw u.
    10. I wish he smoked and died and that heart goes to some person who genuinely wants to live healthy and do something with his life rather than killing 100's and 100's of people
    11. "Pad statement". Absolutely unnecessary. She was doing her best to protect his health and take care of him but this ungrateful asshole makes the pain of an entire women community as a joke. I literally wanna slap him at that moment.
    12. The scene where he fights with Bobby in the end. Why???? Could have taken a gun and shot. Why is it only u should fight???? Why are others standing and singing songs when u fight???? Why is this god level supremacy attitude in u??? Why can't you allow your brothers to help u??? It's like he killed 100's of people, cheated his wife, ready to kill himself or his brother(villian). It's like burning entire forest down just to save a single tree. It's like more damage done than protection.
    13. I agree that he did all that for his father. But there's a difference between protecting your father and burning the entire town just to save him.
    14. At a point I just wished hero to die. Because i couldn't sympathize or idiolose hero's characteristics anymore. In the end before he goes to talk to his dad, heroine tries to talk to him. But he completely ignored her. It's like just your father matters for u. Your mother, wife, children who are alive and suffering because of your actions those things doesn't matter at all to u.
    15. Last scene he tries to show his father how toxic the father was. True his father was way strict and so it had a trauma on him from childhood. Then shut the FK up and go to America and live your happy life. Y do u wanna be here and worsen things for everyone
    16. Heroine leaves him. Her brother comes to pick her up. This hero dude is just sitting. Without even trying to stop once. This is his love. He only reacts when his son comes n hugs. So basically u don't give a shit about your wife anymore. Then u could have given her divorce long back. Toxic asshole
Some hypocrite Teenage boys seeing this movie and telling it's just a movie and normalising it are the same people who got offended for Barbie movie and called out saying it's pseudo faminisim. If that was problematic then this is super problematic.
I don't have a problem with this movie or hero's character. I have a problem with hero calling himself a "Sigma male" and doing all this shit. He's insulting the respect that word has.

I agree with most of the points which u said like the first half shows a masculine man and the second half is where toxicity kicks in and the problem is I don't trust people here to understand the difference and just think it to the natural evolution of masculinity. Another thing is as much as we think movies don't influence people and they don't influence in many parts like killing and all but one part of life which movies have influenced and clearly so is love life as the guys stalking the girl rather than approaching and the suicide threats and all are done because in movies it shows that they work so I think this blurs the line of the films influence or non influence.

Thank you for your nuanced review on this film.
What concerns me is that in India. where Cinema affects real life as well (whether we like to believe or nor), glorification and celebrations of films like KGF, Pushpa etc is increasing day by day.
When I see young men (or even middle-age men) cheering on scenes where Ranbir brings a gun to his sister's college, or when he insults Rashmika for her periods..... those bits disturb me.
The silver lining is that our country there are reviewers like you who are here to guide men in the right direction and call out these films for their problematic scenes (while still appreciating the good parts).
Overall, I liked the film more than I liked KGF, Pushpa etc. A part of me loved the film for Ranbir's performance, great and cinematography an engaging screenplay. BUT the film did have some problematic scenes, and I am not blind to overlook those things.
Still, as a girl, I somehow did not get triggered as much I expected myself to be probably because I was prepared and I knew what I was getting into. I have watched a lot of Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarrantino now, so I feel I have become quite desensitized to this kind of cinema now.

I absolutely agree with the masculinity part however one needs to understand few things-
    1. Cheating- Cheating on your partner is a terrible act be it in Four More Shots or Animal. Having said that, a vast majority will not go and watch Four More Shots Please (considering the target audience which is mostly urban english-speaking upper middle class individuals) however a vast majority of people will watch films like Animal and Kabir Singh especially in tier-3 and 4 towns. In a country like India where there is a high celebrity worship and cinema going culture, such people will think it is normal to cheat on your spouse. Already young teenagers are getting influenced by films and are stalking, slashing their wrist in front of a girl, sending constant creepy DMs, eve teasing and worst- r*ping and throwing acid on young girls when rejected. There was a popular incident in Australia where *A 32-year-old Indian man in Australia, accused of stalking two women, had escaped conviction after a court considered that he had been wrongly influenced by Bollywood movies.* What does it say about India's image world wide? Where to draw the line with such films?
    2. Glorification of violence and gangsters- People will give examples of Gangs of Wasseypur, Mirzapur, Sacred Games- here is the catch, the following films and shows showcase the futility of violence rather than glorifying it and making the protagonists look like heroes. Even in films like Godfather trilogy- the protagonist has a sad ending towards the third part (wife leaves him, daughter dies and he dying a sad death). As a gangster film lover I am saying this.
    3. Masculinity and reducing female characters to nearly voiceless beings- Hollywood has gore- YES but the women are not voiceless beings who can be easily used, replaced and trampled upon in those films. Even women are cunning, flawed, powerful and have a say in many of those films, they are equally flawed humans. In Vanga's films women are mostly voiceless. That's the problem, in Gangs of Wasseypur- Nagma and Mohsina had a say, in Sacred Games- Subhadra, Jojo, Jamila, Kusum, Kaanta were not voiceless, in Mirzapur- Sweety Gupta was not giving in to the advances of Munna Bhaiya, Madhuri Yadav, Beena Tripathi and Golu Gupta were powerful and were equal stakeholders in season 2. Tabu's character on Maqbool was not a flowerpot. The film was giving the vibes of 90's Bollywood films where the Hero takes revenge of his sister's r*pe and the sister was mostly sidelined. Coming to the topic of masculinity, as you said, there is a clear difference between being a protector and protecting your loved ones and being outright cruel and treating women like property. Being a protector does not give you the excuse of being cruel to your wife. Food for thought- if we are ready to call out toxic masculinity in Salman, Tiger, Varun and Kartik's films then we should also discuss Animal's problematic content and whether it was necessary or not

I agree with most of the points you have mentioned but honestly i don’t find them very bothersome because I hate to extrapolate or take moral lessons from movies. The society in general is becoming a bit too critical and harsh to movies whereas we are quite forgiving to books and their layered protagonists/characters - but for movies we all sit down with a moral compass. Interestingly, this movie reminded me of Edgar Allan Poe’s dark stories and his crazy characters that reach alienation, terror, and madness and finally getting consumed with insanity that there is no point of return. The only thing I did not like in the movie is the climax … it was quite weak… it was not well defined. It could have been more powerful and emotional. (Compare this to Qala’s ending where you are shattered!). Moreover, I think Anil Kapoor couldn’t pull it off and is the reason why it felt unsatisfactory. Apart from this the movie is a triumph!

Firstly, we all need to stop idolizing our main actors as heroes. Secondly, we all have to start watching movies purely as a product of someone’s imagination. And that is what I am not happy when movie critics start criticizing particular scenes from the movie and dissecting them.. they are not ours to comment. You can comment on a movie’s editing, on the movie being extremely long, incoherency as the scenes were too jumpy, not a great climax… things like this, but when you start taking small snippets from a movie and start blowing them out of proporstion, this is where things go wrong. The protagonist is shown as an “animal”, and that is THE point! The entire second half was completely dedicated to showing him that he has completely lost it, like who walks nude in the open, so why are we trying to find logic and manners is his deeds! That is why I referenced to Edgar Allan Poe… all his protagonists are very very much like how Ranbir is shown in the movie .. but do we ever say that Edgar Allan Poe’s books are a very bad influence and should be banned.. as his characters insane streaks will damage the society! No.. we don’t .. and that is how people should perceive movies. All this criticism that the nation is giving literally curse words to even people who have liked the movie shows how polarized we have become … directors who dare to think elsewise will stop making such movies.. and guess what .. we will only have the regular run-of-the-mill kind of movies. No wonder people are running more towards Hollywood… as they dare to attempt such variety.. for example Leonardo’s character in Killers of the Flower Moon… man he was soooooo evil in the movie that he was poisoning his own wife and was responsible in killing her entire family .. should everyone get influenced with him? Because he is Leo? you can’t censor people’s imagination.. the movie got an R rating. And the choice is always in your hand to not watch it.

There's a saying in Robert McKee's Story, the protagonist doesn't have to be likable but he/she should share a bond with the audience, so we feel empathetic, and this character was not empathetic at all! And a guy who is ready to change his hairstyle as per his father, how come he crosses him on so many levels.

When he talks to his wife about her period needlessly and the dialogue is so tone deaf that's the issue! Violent and raw films are welcome ! Showing obsession is fine ! Y go international! Even in local gangster films like vastav ,nayagan where all shown raw for that time period but nowhere did mani ratnam or Mahesh manjrekar justify their protagonist! Here vanga does ! I think people are not noticing one fact with Ranbir's character is that.. in the beginning only when ranbir talked about alpha male community and how they used to perform shows how he thinks of himself just like a Alpha ... Strong and conqueror that's why he is protective towards his family as he feels it's his sole responsibility and he can't think of his wife with another man and he himself goes out and just to achieve his aim he is cheating on his wife which he thinks is part of his duty

Bro i agree with you man! I had the same opinion about the plot about developing the 2nd half for the 2nd film and no other reviewer mentioned it! I believe there has been a deep connection between ranbir and rashmika's character in the movie! The director tried to potray a twisted love between them. I think you misunderstood the fact that ranbir did not threaten rashmika but the guy she sleeps with , I see that its a bit toxic but the scene potrays that the director has been consistent with the protagonist's character development . I think this movie is pretty good if we consider it as a movie with closed walls . This potrays the type of insanity one can go to for family . I liked the director's vision about how he wanted to show the love for the ranbir's family. I think the background score and the editing style fits the director's vision. One should see this movie as an emotional drama with a twisted love

To everyone calling that ranvijay can be a bad influence on others... For your information, it is a character played in a cinema... Cinema is a form of art, and art can have any type form... And nowhere in the film it was seen to justify his character, he was toxic, he was violent, he was obsessed with his love for his father... It is upto us how we see the film and the character... To anyone saying that kids will get influenced, first of all it is adult certified for a reason... And if you are an adult, see this film and get influenced, then it was never about the movie or the character, it's you that is the problem, if you are an adult and get influenced by this, then these traits were already in you and you just needed an confirmation or trigger to act in that way... I've seen the movie, I enjoyed it as a movie, as a form of art... But neither was I influenced by it nor would I ask anyone to be like the characters... As simple as that

I partially agree with you on the toxic masculinity thing. You have been barking pseudo feminism but you don't understand that even with intentions good violence isn't the answer to all problems. Ranvijay's concern regarding his family and sister is correct but as a younger brother he wasn't even listening to his sister POV. That's not how you act in real life. In impulse and be violent. But the film glorified that perspective. So the next time someone bullies my sister if I do the did that Ranvijay did I will be jailed. Who will protect my family then? Violence ain't always the answer. I also didn't like how more than half of your video was about calling out"pseudo feminists" that they are wrong instead of making the video about how harmful the film Animal is. You reviewed Four More Shots which was a horrible and actual pseudo feminist show but has some nice aspects as one of the characters stood against sexism at her workplace but you hardly mentioned those points, focusing on the greater part which is it being a horrible pseudo feminist show and rightly so, then why the biased review towards Animal?

It doesn't justify ANYTHING from Ranvijay's character and all of his negative actions have some ramifications or consequences. Geetanjali's brilliant monologue calling him out for his toxic behaviours and her slapping Ranvijay multiple times made it absolutely perfect and showed that the script is not glorifying any of his actions.

    • @niveditasah8348

No no no that's the thing he didn't face any consequences or whatsoever for his actions... He goes ahead to murder hundreds of people and in the end the only lesson he gets is that his wife leaves him because he cheated. It just shows that if you have money you can do anything and you are the "alpha" male
and the role of women in this movie is limited to being just a prop that does not have any opinion and are merely puppets(except for the part where rashmika gave her monologue).

4:45 "yas girl, go queen" karne wale nhi aayegein. What shantanu just said here is definitely a part of toxic masculinity. Men are expected to be the providers and protectors to the extent that any man who doesn't fall in the mold is automatically considered effeminate by guys like shantanu. You can read that with the way self proclaimed "alpha males" talk about "simps" and "soy boys" i.e. the men they assume are like doormats just because they're kinder to women and see them as equals. This is the part of patriarchy where patriarchy starts harming men.
Men who don't fit the mold feel emasculated and weak. Men who do fit the mold abuse their rights and make rules for other people. Anyone who looks at shantanu would know he doesn't fit the "alpha male" mold himself. He's average to short in height, looks more like hero's comic relief side kick than the hero himself and his "job" is talking into the camera lens about movies. All of this goes against what a traditionally masculine man is supposed to look like and do.
Let's analyse the premise of men's protector behavior not being toxic in any instance.
    1. Who are these men protecting the family and the women from? Other men.
It's chiefly men who have created this dichotomy of good men vs bad men. They scare the women of their community or tribe or religion into thinking that the men of the other community/tribe/religion are out to get them but the good men are going to protect them. But they ask for something in return. The women need to surrender their privileges and freedom to them so they can be protected. They have to cover their bodies, cover their heads, not talk to other men, they have to be the good men's bang maids and serve them.
And what happens if the bad men get to these women, the good men decide to take revenge because the bad men have touched their property (i.e. their women). And how do they take this revenge? By assaulting women of the other community to send a message to the bad men. But they did it out of revenge, they aren't bad themselves. It's the bad men who are bad and the good men who are good. 😂
    2. Any man no matter how he outwardly looks and talks can protect his family if he wants to. Let's look at the character of Suri from rab ne bana di jodi. By no definition of the "alpha male" is he anything but a simp and beta. Yet every one knows he'll protect and love his wife way more than a man likd kabir singh can.
    3. The whole concept of men being the sole protectors has become outdated in today's world where we have law enforcement to fight crime. We don't need a brother like mithun to fight our gRapist or a husband like kabir singh to beat up any one who applied color to our face on holi.

    • @sampadization
      @sampadization 11 місяців тому +2

I don't think the protector male character thing is glorified in the movie..
It actually shows how just wrong this mindset is.. in the movie itself.. How obsession with this protector mindset can make you a monster, killer, and abuser...
And all these type of characters we do see in our lives.. Many men who'd abuse like this if they get power..
He's a mass murderer, ofc he lacks morals and has no justification to any of his actions..

I guess you need a mental asylum, since when did protecting your mother or sister or wife become "treating them as object" are you on some kind of weed??? And if this is so then why all the feminists keep crying about "our country cannot protect women , we are unsafe" what protection you're asking for then????
Coming to Kabir singh didi Kaun si movie dekh li, usne clearly college k ladke se pucha and the guy said vo ladke Kabir k enemy the aur forcefully chest or Butts p color lagaya aur vo ro rahi thi movie dekhi h thik se??? How easily you said "he hit those guys because they applied color on preeti"😂😂😂 so tell me if someone does such shit with you what do you expect ??? Are you going to normalise it ??? By asking your bf or brother to leave the guy and not hit him and same thing goes in this movie his sister was teased nobody came in her support so what do you expect a teen to do (apart from that he did everything wrong and murder cannot be glorified in the name of protecting)
IF YOUR GUY PROTECTS YOU THEN HE IS TOXIC , HE TREAT YOU LIKE HIS PROPERTY , IF HE DONT THEN HE IS COWARD HE IS NOT A REAL MAN......WHAT THE HELL DO YOU PEOPLE ACTUALLY WANT
And one last question, if you're going out with your mom and during an argument on road someone grabs your mother's hair and nobody comes in your support not even police , what you'll do ??? Won't you hit her (that person attacking your mom) wouldn't that be aggression???, there are time and situation which compel us to bring our worst because all the doors are closed so it's not totally the person at fault , stop raising fingure at everything a man does
