  • When I interviewed Sandeep following the release of Kabir Singh, our conversation concluded with him stating that "if people thought this was a violent film, he would show them what a violent film actually is." Sandeep has indeed kept his promise. Animal showcases various forms of violence, including emotional, psychological, sexual, and physical. The film features Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna, and Anil Kapoor.

I have a problem with lies regarding Ranjeet Nalwa Shalwa and halwa. Sikhs were colonized by the British for over 150 years, but Afghans defeated British. Sikhs have been always state beneficiaries of the British and has serviced them throughout. Sikhs are the reason behind British colonization of South Asia. They took help ( soldiers, guns, bombs, telescopes, Maps ) from British to invade Hazara and uzbik ( singers and dancers) region of Afghanistan. Within 7 years Pashtuns/Pathans got together and kicked injured ranjett back to lahore . Nalwa was beheaded in jamord by Dost Mohammad. Afghan history and museums tell a different story but since they were never colonized by the British and never had British given cinemas, printing press, historians, railways, English schools, trained army, ports, parliament , radio etc, their version of history is not known.

The very thought that the main lead should have a squeaky clean "hero" image is old school. Nowhere in the movie is it showing that the man is perfect. The character is just a human with grey shades who is so obsessed with his dad that he would go any extent to protect him. Now about the misogyny and violence mentioned. I am sure the very same critics who look upto movies like The Godfather, Scarface, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction and the like for their art (which by the way, has elements of misogyny/violence) look down on movies like Animal. Stating that the character played by Bobby Deol rapes and abuses women is as good as saying, "Oh my God! The character portraying Joker has massacred people! How dare he!" Another one of these double standards was seen when people say the main lead disrespects a woman by pulling the bra strap and asking another to lick his shoe. It's as silly as me saying, "Oh my! I am so offended when Rashmika wished her father-in-law didn't survive the gun shot. I am so aggrieved that Tripti was double crossing Ranveer!" Like any movie, these are plots and characters. A movie, unlike a speech, need not deliver a universal message. That's why movies have ratings, which is still new in Indian cinema. Nobody talks about the great aspects of the movie like; how well the characters executed their roles, the intelligent use of music especially during the hotel showdown scene, the dark humour, the brilliant subtle potrayal of Vijay and Abrar similarities when it came to their mission and valour (they're equals), and above all, there wasn't a single minute of boredom in this 201 minute movie. Now that's a great feat!

The movie is about a problematic man. Throughout the movie all the characters in the movie acknowledge and point out that Ranbir’s character has problems. His issues with anger, misogyny etc. are constantly pointed out to him throughout the movie. It is also shown that he had developed these issues due to experiences in his life.
I am not sure then why “critics” have to only point towards the problematic character of Ranbir.
There are numerous real-life incidents where women have committed crimes towards other men. If SRV (or Zoya Akhtar) made movie about or inspired by such incidents, would it be necessary and/or alright just to focus on the misandry part of the movie?
May be next time SRV should make a movie about a 40-something illiterate gangster who somehow manages to get himself in to the top most medical institute (because the principal of the institute didn’t want his daughter to marry the gangster because he was lying about his profession), disrupts everyone’s life around him, gets his way using threats, violence & lies and in the end almost manages to become a medical doctor.

Animal 's teaser and trailer clearly shows that its a violent adult film, and why did FC expect to see something else in the the movie,? The film did serve what was promised in the trailer but FC just saw misogyny and missed everything else ? Agreed there is misogyny in the movie but every character in the movie is opposed to Ranbir's character behaviour...its not glorified..no one in his family loves or appreciates him for his actions in the movie. All the powerful gangster/violent movies in the world are at some level misogynistic about how they treat women, but none have been panned like Animal, that should say something about what kind of opinion do these criticizers have about Sandeep when reviewing Animal....personal or professional?

After watching the movie, With all due respect, I can say that the director needs help.....So much of the movie is disturbing and its even more disturbing to see people clapping for misogynistic scenes...The problem is not showing them in movies ! it's being celebrated! The sad part is that people, including women don't find anything wrong in 'toxic' relationship. The attitude has to change for both men and women. Though I do not support any part of the movie and truly did not enjoy , I have to admit that no other actor other than Ranbir Kapoor could have pulled this off. I don't understand why it seems that it is incumbent upon Indian cinema to preach. The last time I checked, cinema, regardless of its ethnicity, is meant to entertain and for its art to be appreciated. And Animal does just that. It's true that if you're expecting a run-of-the-mill Bollywood movie where the "hero" is larger than life, and the "heroine" must sound and look like a "Bollywood heroine", and the "villains" are born villain, then yea, this movie is not for you. This movie is rather about an ordinary man with an extraordinary grade of affection and adoration towards his father. And just like any of us, he's got some issues too. It's a pure family-vendetta action drama. As a filmmaker, is it so blasphemous to be inclusive and narrate a story with characters portraying actual human shades? For all that talk of misogyny and feminism, did we fail to notice how realistically and maturely Rasmika's and Ranbir's relationship has been portrayed? Can't we appreciate the fact that the movie has used music to bring out the art and fervour of not just emotional scenes but also the action scenes? How refreshing of an idea is that! And finally, Bobby Deol. I never knew the guy had so much talent in him. He doesn't have a word of dialogue in the movie, and yet, he hits the ball out of the park with his angelic-demon expressions. Kudos, to Sandeep Reddy Vanga for having the bold chutzpah to choose to make a movie that speaks the truth that all humans do have grey shades, rather than play safe and rake in the moolah.

If he didn't ever meet Zoya, he wouldn't have a heart and would die in the first half only. The story would've ended right there and then. The exploration in the 2nd half was quite interesting when Bobby appeared, but had less screen time. If they could've focused just about more of his character, then the audience would've been engaged even more.

These critics won't have any problem with glorification of cheating by women in Bollywood movies like lipstick under my burkha(concealing of identity and cheating a man by rathna pathak and movie shows her as victim instead of the man ,web series like 4 more shots where feminism and boldness is all about cheating and having sex with random people on road and playing victim card for their own mistakes ,these people doesn't find any problem in those potrayals ,when a movie with literal name of animal potrays the flawed character they will lecture about misogyny and talk about women character being limited to sex and food providers , is this a film or a web series to show every character and their background

I think people are not getting the theme of the movie, in this movie i did not see ranbir as a HERO and more of a villain and ranbir and vanga have nailed it. It is a movie where it shows that what obsession can do to a person. They are not glorifying violence/abuse or influencing other to do, since its a A-Rated film adults should be able to distinguish between reel life and real life

Nailed it??? It was a cringefest of a movie for most of the part. Vanga was trying too hard to make edgy film but ended up writing a film equivalent to a 15 years old pouring out his adolescent frustrations.

    • @scenic_lover

A movie can be made about any theme, with any amount of violence, absurdity and disgust as long as it has a strong plot, nuances and consistent underlying themes all of which seem to be lacking in Animal. It's a shallow depiction of a psychopath, fabricated without diving deep into his mind, thoughts or worldview. It hides all its weaknesses under the guise of being edgy violent, anti woke, mysogynistic and alpha masculine.

Anupama’s review content for Animal film has made me realize how bias so called film critics are towards the film makers and care less about the quality of film making or the actual film and effort made by the whole team including actors, technicians, etc. Her direct aim at film director is distasteful and the success of this film is an amazing insult to her biased opinion. Yet another so called film critic Anupama is crossed off our list to depend for honest reviews. Public are the true critics and this movie rocks and will reach the status of absolute legendary for many years to come!

As for people like Anupama Chopra, I do not know whether she watches cinema for the sake of hype culture or whether she genuinely enjoys analyzing films and is able to provide a good criticism of them.
The entire animal film is a character development story. The first part depicts a guy who protects her sister and needs validation from his father, while the second part depicts him as a true monster or as a hypocrite if you wish.
The introduction of Zoya is very significant in that it brought out his true colors of "Alphaness" as he attempted to influence his wife about how animals and tribal groups select a mate.
In the course of the story, he becomes less likely to be liked as the plot progresses, starting with him protecting his sister to cheating on his wife.
Thats the beauty of story telling by Sandeep
Furthermore, Ranbir does not have anything to lose in the next chapter, since he has lost his father through cancer as well as lost his wife. Thus, he will become more violet.
PS - few things i hate about movie are over using of words like alphas and introduction of song where ranbirs cousins holding guns singing the main title song

Watched the movie yesterday. Such a disingenuous review & misses so much context - sad to say that Anupama has lost all her credibility in my eyes because of this deliberate attempt to tarnish the filmmaker and the story. Keeping the audience engrossed for 3+ hours, what a feat. Nowhere did I feel that the main character was being portrayed as someone to emulate. Loved the movie - do watch it.

If it was intended to be a film about a misogynistic, unhinged and a violent character, I think the filmmaker wins. If it was intended to shock the audience with how a story can proceed in unexpected ways, the filmmaker wins. If it was to show how a toxic father-son love can become so central for the making of such a character, the filmmaker wins. If it was, let us assume, to piss-off critics who look at every film from the limits of their personal moral lens, the filmmaker wins! And of course, if it was just to titillate the audience and force them into the theatres for box-office alone, the filmmaker clearly wins!
