I love this song so much! FTPOF was the first album they released since I've started listening to them and it was so special to hear this album and this song for the first time after going through all their catalogue. The bridge and the drums kicking in are classic The National moments.

Saw them tonight in Mansfield, MA. They were amazing. It was my 11th concert. This was my first time seeing Alien live. It was the best song in the entire set. The National is better live than their recorded music. I love their albums, but when I hear a new one, I can tell which song will be the one I love live, where Matt gets emotional, and it gets a big ending from the band. I knew Eucalyptus would be good live. Honestly, Alien came out of left field...or down from the clouds. I had to come home and find a live version. So here we are.
I see someone had a completely different interpretation and I guess that’s how it is with lyrics. Personally, in the context of helping someone heal from a breakdown (especially preceded by the lines about being their nurse or something) I thought he was talking about making sure the other person didn’t metaphorically drift away and drown in their suffering. I don’t know if i care if I’m wrong cause I get so much comfort from that line. 😊
@micheller. So this is it. His gal is unstable and he is trying to calm her down and chill her out. That line means that he can take care of her and keep her in close so she does not stray too far. He has that skill he thinks.
The National is in my top 5 bands❤. But i gotta be honest. These last albums are shit. They are doing the same song Over and Over. They need to change. I believed now its a pivotal moment for the band, Either they become a mediocre band if they keep doing the same song eternally in every new álbum. Or they chop and change and evolve in new ways musically, to establish the greatness that we all think the band is. The coin is in the air bois.
Bear in mind that this material started coming at a time when it was unclear if Matt was going to be able to climb back on the horse -of life, not just the band. It’s a pretty vivid snapshot that unfortunately a lot of us could relate to, and a pretty singular moment in time. That happens at times with musicians. I really don’t have a sense of where they go from here, and they quite possibly don’t either. But I’m grateful that they are still doing this, and I think I like these albums a wee bit more than some fans do. I’m not alone in that either.
The National is going FANtastic on this tour. The fan response is spectacular. If you don't enjoy this or what they choose to play and do, then you need another favorite band to squash.

The genesis of their music in the Studio in the practice room. When they are alone. Making new music. Im not squashing nothing. Just saying facts. Im not a passive cheerleader that celebrate anything. That they do. Try to find an opinion more with ur brain than ur Heart.

I didn't like I Am Easy To Find much, but First Two Pages of Frankenstein has some gems, it's really good
