Holy Jesus talk about a 6ft 2 mountain of a man crying like a bitch in the cinema when I seen this and every time after. It’s a brother thing if you don’t have one you won’t get it
This makes me think of my Dad. I lost him when I was 5. My parents split up and he walked away. My mum moved away and I never saw him again. We moved to England and he was in Canada. So far away but our hearts remained close. He was my hero and my first love. He passed in 2005. This song makes me cry thinking of him.
This song touches me on such a deep level that it actually reopens some old wounds. She and I loved hard, but we fought intensely. I wish it worked. I still miss her every single day. I love this song, especially this performance, but it's so poignant that it's a little painful to listen to.
I lost my dad in 2014 and this song defines exactly the way I feel. He never sad I love you but I'm sure he loved me with all his heart. My dad was a very important piece of me... something left me when he passed away and this songs explains exactly how I feel. Thank you for this song
This damn song. It captures one of the most heart-wrenching moments in a human's life. The loss of someone so dear and it can apply to many scenarios. This is that feeling, this song is that feeling, the one no one ever wants to feel because the pain is so excruciating.
I had just moved to Europe when I discovered this song (band) glued in cd form to the front of an UnCut magazine. It absolutely crushed me then as I had painfully ended a long relationship before moving to Europe, but the genius simplicity and haunting beauty of the song burned into my soul. Those first few months in Europe were dark. Now, nearly 20 years later, I find myself back in my home country after painfully ending a long relationship in Europe. I heard 'About Today' last night (in a movie soundtrack) for the first time in many years but all those long-lost feels came flooding back in. Us humans seem to be addicted to the tragedy of the human condition. There is beauty in paradox. God, I still miss those times/people.
Yeah id lump on my throat and teared up watching this in the cinema.. and I had a date and I didn't want her to see me cry... Couldn't even talk walking out of the cinema.. warrior.. some flick 👍👌
Mário Giordano. Maybe he was stuck in a bad place in life. Sometimes all you need is that little push in the right direction. Maybe this song was just that!
Such an amazing movie - Warrior - this song made the ending scene even more emotional. I find it hard to even listen to this song now without getting emotional and bawling my eyes out!
Jesus christ im already in tears because this song for me is about my brother leavin the family home and leavin me, and the bond we had as youngsters was gone the minute he left, leavin me alone and empty til this day, its only when i hear this song it reminds of that emptiness and brings back that memory of abandoment. But your story, my god its even more sentimental
I could relate but in a different scenario I am the one that left my family bc of my brother ( who is older btw) did something that betrayed my trust and family didn’t do anything about it. But I miss them so much , especially the memories I made with my brother when we were young , and hearing this song makes me think about them. I love them but I don’t know how to say it without breaking down. But how can I when he hasn’t even reached out at all and it’s been over 2 years. I hate them but there is still love of course bc it’s family. Since then I’ve grown so distant. I cry thinking about them. Only person I am close to is my sister who moved away before me.
The most powerful beautiful song, discovering there is nothing can be said or done to save a relationship the love and mutual respect is there, but it’s run it’s cycle and sometime you just have to go against all emotions and accept it’s over and there is no way to save what has died. It is so beautiful yet so sad. We all been there at some point or will get there at some point.
What an amazing moment the very gently loving soft rain accompanied with this song is almost supernatural energy. Complete Bliss. Real heart felt emotions. As a man I tear up Hearing this song.
I lost my father today. I hated him for not being able to show me he loved me. I wanted to make him love me. Even as an adult, i would bring him his super pretzels because maybe it would stir a fond memory he may of had where he watched tour of duty with his only son and let him stay up too late on fridays. I knew he loved me, in his own way, but i wanted affirmation. I wanted the feeling of throwing down my army ants in excitement and running in the grass to my daddy as he closed the grey ford taurus door and grab his suit jacket from the passenger seat and id jump into him and his enourmous outstretched hands and leap onto his shoes with all the little holes in them and feel the weight of the world that a ten year old has to bear be lifted. This song is for people who dont know how to say I love you to the people they want love from the most. My kind of people. I love you dad. I hope that was enough.
teefly6 I was in your shoes 2 years ago. We were not that close when I was growing up because he was always busy working but there was a quiet bond that became stronger in the last few years of his life. I still miss him a lot and I although I'm not religious, I take comfort in that fact that if he were still around (somewhere, looking down) he would be proud of his only son. That scene with Tommy and his dad in the hotel room really resonated with me because without words, there's still so much we can say to each other. Thank you for sharing your memory and I hope you keep doing good!
Waited 5 years to see them live, thought I'd never see them live but I got tickets on my birthday, super excited. So I'm watching The National live and Matt walked in the middle of the crowd and passed me and we shook hands, was the best gig I've ever ever been too! YOU ROCK
Mi vergogno a dirlo, ma ho scoperto questa sensazionale band, da qualche settimana, che suono, che ritmo, che profondità, che voce, che musica. Livello altissimo...
Watched Warrior again 5 years ago to get up for my first ever fight....worked well but ended up tearing up at the end. This song just fits that movie and that specific scene so amazingly. Movie and song brilliant in their own right but together....another level.
This beautiful, amazing song has so much truth in it. I love the strong, serious, determined, hope-filled ending of this performance. The biggest truth for me after 34 years of marriage is the only way two human beings can love each other forever is in Christ! And forever love is glorious.
This song reminds me of my father. I listened to this song on repeat after his cancer diagnosis, it sums up our relationship over the years, not really close as a father and son but close in ways but we couldn't communicate it through a relationship. While he was dieing thus songs sums up the moments I lost to ask him '' about today'' RIP dad. Amazing song, I love the national
This is the greatest song in the world. I shall put this in a frame and hang it on my bedroom wall. I will cherish this and give it all the praise and honor and glory forever and ever.
+Jeremy Fultineer Drums at 5:28 made it sound like something out of Kings of Leon... Well, to say nothing of how 0:33 totally changed the tone of what the song was trying to convey, for me. Sounded more like something you play over a scene of people leaving on a bus waving happily at friends and family...I dunno. :-/
I've heard This song over a hundred times and it still brings a tear to my eye nearly every time I listen to it, Such a powerful song! Thank you for creating such beautiful music and sharing it with the world!
Everyone who hears this and cries in side your heart lost someone dear as I see in all these comments. Even it’s for approval or respect and love for or from your loved one on your mind with this song. I lost my dad in 2012 and my brother 2016. This song breaks me down always and remembering the times the love from and with my dad and brother. I love you Michael I love you Dad…. I love you! It’s ok …. I’ll see you soon again my family. To everyone here…. Much love much memories. Thanks … Eddie
Today you were far away and I didn't ask you why What could I say I was far away You just walked away and I just watched you What could I say How close am I to losing you Tonight you just close your eyes and I just watch you slip away How close am I to losing you Hey, are you awake Yeah I'm right here Well can I ask you about today How close am I to losing you How close am I to losing
One of the best tracks from one of the greatest bands that the "rock and roll years" have produces. Seeing them live on August 27 in Manchester supported by Dry cleaning
My brother Dolph sent this link to me and said this reminded him of me. What a compliment! I am so glad to have found this because of him. The melody and horn are just so etherial! Thanks Dolph, Love Annie
This song means so much to me. I don't know if the original artists will read this, but.,........ if they do.. I thank you with all my heart ....... This song touches my family and heart like you never believe.
ironic that one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in years is about break-ups - one of life's toughest times. The National are so underrated, to evoke bitter, sweet & all the emotions in between within 8 minutes is simply majestic
been 5 years we separated. I am out of the country. I see cats roaming around here out of my window and found this song in my playlist. I am not sure if I miss old times, but...
I miss her ............ never realized that I was in love with her in those 10 months and now it's been 11 years when I saw her the last time. it was her wedding which I attended after the friendship of 10 months. Now I am sitting in a library listening to this song thousands of miles away from the country where we met and she is probably in another country in the east or may be she died, not sure if she is alive and this uncertainty makes things worst. There is this strange restless emptiness in me even after having two kids and its never gonna go away, my only hope is death............ yes, indeed I miss her a lot.
Just enjoy one of most influential songs i ever heard. Going through a divorce this hits home more than any song Ive heard. It will bring you back and help you move on
If your a regular music fan, the list is nearly infinite. So many genres to discover, deep cuts from Artists you never knew existed. Let me suggest you make contact with friends who enjoy music and you trade tunes btw each other or in a group...Not every recommendation will be a hit, but every now and then, a gem is discovered and it makes it to your Playlists
I remember this was the last song they played before arcade fire played their show and I’d gotten to the concert late because I didn’t know who the national was, and holy shit this was the first song I’d ever heard them do and I was so mesmerized by the song. I’ve been an avid fan ever since and still wish I’d skipped Taco Bell and saw the nationals full set.

Your dad loved both of you very much
It's 3yrs ... and since this is exactly how i feel .... Love u dad

It’s 2am and I can’t get enough of this band. Absolutely brilliant
Warrior brought me to this. And this brought me to the national, they brought me to life......
Wonderfully worried
This damn song. It captures one of the most heart-wrenching moments in a human's life. The loss of someone so dear and it can apply to many scenarios. This is that feeling, this song is that feeling, the one no one ever wants to feel because the pain is so excruciating.

Why it saved your life?
Mário Giordano. Maybe he was stuck in a bad place in life. Sometimes all you need is that little push in the right direction. Maybe this song was just that!
@DTB88 but maybe he didnt. dont instantly doubt people.
Such an amazing movie - Warrior - this song made the ending scene even more emotional. I find it hard to even listen to this song now without getting emotional and bawling my eyes out!

Heartbreakingly beautiful in the rain ...

One of National's best live extended performance. Love their attitude.

Majestic haunting heart breaking.. gets me every time.

Great live performance of this gem.
I revisit this performance several times a year.
all the things in life money cant buy
Today you were far away
and I didn't ask you why
What could I say
I was far away
You just walked away
and I just watched you
What could I say
How close am I to losing you
Tonight you just close your eyes
and I just watch you
slip away
How close am I to losing you
Hey, are you awake
Yeah I'm right here
Well can I ask you about today
How close am I to losing you
How close am I to losing
Such few words for a song, but they said so much.
Pretty cool of Eddie Vedder to hop on violin.
rt on , wish eddie have of sang too
For real? Eddie on violin
Looks more like Thom Yorke to me
Eric Clapton, Thom Yorke and Eddie Vedder rolled into one.
It’s actually bob Costa’s fraternal twin. And that isn’t Matt Ber It’s an Aaron eckhart celebrity look alike doing a Matt beringer gig
One of the best tracks from one of the greatest bands that the "rock and roll years" have produces.

My favourite song of theirs.

How cool from the drummer playing his nice rithm even after everyone else left.
